Appeal Week

March 5th - March 11th was Plunket Appeal Week 2012. It proved to be a very busy month for our committee as there was lots planned and with two newish babies and a wedding being organised things were pretty hectic. At a national level the Appeal is Plunket's main fundraiser for the year; although branches at community level continue to actively fundraise throughout the year. While our wonderful nurses are funded by the Ministry of Health, the many extra services such as playgroups and coffee groups that Plunket provides are funded by the committee. Committees are also responsible for premises used such as Plunket House on Pukuatua St and the clinic on Hapi St in Westbrook. This includes keeping the buildings safe and well maintained. Along with this committees provide help and support to paid staff. 2012 is the first time that our current committee has really been able to get stuck in for Appeal and we were really pleased with the results. Financially it was a great boost earning over $2,500, but it's always amazing to see how much support Plunket receives in the community. We received so much support from so many people during all of our Appeal activities that even though it can be pretty tiring, it is so rewarding to be a part of something that is so positive for so many New Zealand families. The culmination of our Appeal was the Family Picnic held at the lakefront on March 17th. This was a great day and a great way to finish the two weeks of events. It was fantastic to see so many families there taking advantage of the fine weather, information and having a great time with the old-school games. We hope that you enjoyed the day and hope to see you again next year! Thank you all for your support.

Bunnings Community Day

Bunnings hosted a community day in March. This was right in the middle of our Appeal work, so what a great opportunity to once again get out into the community, advertise our services and promote our family picnic.

March 8th saw members of our hardworking committee at the night market collecting for Plunket, promoting our services and Appeal activities.

Instant Finance Donation

Plunket Rotorua has received $1000 to go towards renovating Plunket House. Instant Finance took nominations from people in the community to award a non-profit organisation in the Bay of Plenty with its annual Community Spirit Award. The successful nominee was drawn out of a hat, with the $1000 cheque being presented at Rotorua Plunket House on Thursday afternoon. Rotorua Plunket committee president Emma Hardie said it was a real surprise. "It's awesome, it's nice to know that you are appreciated," she said. "Plunket is dependent on our volunteers and it is nice for them to be recognised." She said the money would go towards refurbishment of the Plunket House and would help in the bigger goal of the organisation. "Our goal is to ensure Plunket continues to provide the important extra services within the community, which are of benefit to young families." Plunket Rotorua took on 1200 new baby cases last year and was expecting to be just as supportive this year. Rotorua Instant Finance manager Nigel Maynard said they had been running the Community Spirit programme for about seven years. "We do give back to the community and this is a nice way of doing just that." He said the person who made the successful nomination had the opportunity to present the award, but a Rotorua woman declined, wishing to remain anonymous. Mr Maynard said the programme had awarded the $1000 prize to 12 initiatives across the country this year including sports clubs, the arts, church-led projects and charities.

@Heart Heart Stopper Challenge

@Heart, formerly Heart Children New Zealand, is the only organisation in New Zealand that provides lifelong support to those affected by a childhood heart condition. They are not affiliated with the Heart Foundation, and they are not funded by the government. They provide services that include information, training, family support, counseling and psychological support, specialised equipment and camps. They have branches all around New Zealand. The Rotorua @Heart covers the Whakatane, Opotiki and Tokoroa areas. Every week 12 babies are born in New Zealand with a congenital (present at birth) heart condition. This is the most common serious birth abnormality in New Zealand. Children can develop heart conditions through Rheumatic Fever, Cardiomyopathy or Kawasaki Disease. This is known as an acquired childhood heart condition. 450 children have open heart surgery each year. Annually 30-40 Heart children will sadly lose their battle. There is no prevention or cure for a congenital heart condition, which is why @Heart has @Heart kids, @Heart Teens and @Heart Adults. They are there for every step of the journey from the time of diagnosis. Each year as a fundraiser they hold their Annual Heart Stopper Challenge. This year it is on the 20 of May at 11.00am, held at the Aquatic Centre. The special guest is Frankie Stevens. To take the plunge all you need to do is get a team together of 4 to 6 people. Have a team name, and you can also come in costume. Take the plunge into icy cold water for 5 minutes and get people to sponsor you. There are shields and prizes to be won. The Inspiration is the 450 children that have the open heart surgery. During surgery a child’s chest cavity can be filled with an icy slush to slow down the heart rate and give the surgeon a longer operating time. All the money collected stays with the Rotorua branch to help local heart families. For more information on this event please contact: Debbie Scothern on 027 2088487, email at [email protected] or go to www.heartstopper.org.nz or www.heartnz.org.nz.

Walking Festival

Early March brought us the annual 10-day Walking Festival. Hundreds of walkers from New Zealand and overseas were here to participate in Rotorua's Weekend of Walks - the main event of the annual 10-day Walking Festival. The event aims to encourage people to be active and promotes exercise by walking. Two groups of Plunket walkers walked through parts of the city or the Redwoods on March 8th and organiser Rebecca Ward, who led the city walkers, said her group used the opportunity to fundraise for Plunket. The group normally walk every Tuesday for 45 minutes. "It's a great way to meet other mums and get out of the house when you've got a little baby."

International Nurses Day and Mother’s Day

The weekend of the 12-13th of May sees us honour and recognise two very special groups of people, nurses and mothers. International nurses day is the 12th of May and Mother’s Day is the 13th of May. Rotorua Plunket will be at the Night Markets on the 10th selling “brownies in a jar” as a fundraiser, a fantastic gift for Mother’s day at only $6.50. These will be available from the 9th May, just pop into Plunket and ask for Louise between 9 and 3. There will also be a raffle available for a lovely pamper basket. $2 a ticket.

Meet the Nurses – Brydie Wharerau-Tukiwaho

What is your official title and how long have you been with Plunket? What did you do prior? I have three roles in Plunket, Plunket Kaiawhina; Carseats Co-ordinator (Child restraint technician) & finally PEPE Facilitator. Prior to working for Plunket I worked at Foodstuffs and before that for over twelve years I taught at primary schools around Rotorua. Which areas of Rotorua do you cover? All Do you have a clinic day? If so which day and where? No, not really, but I do ask clients to come in on my Carseat days (Mon/Wed/Fri) if it suits. What is the most rewarding thing for you about being a part of Plunket? Helping others, being that fence at the top & not the ambulance at the bottom. How many children of your own do you have? I have been blessed with four children, two girls & two boys. Our eldest has also given us three handsome little mokopuna. Are you from Rotorua originally? Born & bred in Rotorua. What do you do when you’re not working? My husband & I enjoy as much time as we can with our mokopuna & family. Weekends we are out & about watching or participating in sports or climbing, running, walking & riding on any of the beautiful attractions our city has to offer. Most importantly, on Sunday we attend Church, a great environment to bring up your children in. What is your favourite movie? I enjoy a good comedy. If you could give one piece of advice what would it be? I'd rather attempt to do something great for God & fail, than do nothing & succeed. Aim high not low. Move fast not slow.

Baby Factory

The next Baby Factory discount day is Saturday, May 12th. This is for Friends of Plunket members. You will be issued a coupon by Plunket that you must take with you to redeem the discount. If you would like a coupon call into Plunket house with your FOP card.

Asthma Rotorua

Asthma Rotorua is a community based organisation located in Community House on Haupapa Street (next to the library). They offer free services of asthma education in the general Rotorua area as well as Taupo and Turangi. You can self refer or be referred by your GP practice, hospital or even Plunket. You can sit down together and discuss anything to do with asthma to help you understand it more and get better asthma control. They are now offering a new programme called Baxter Bear, this is for newly diagnosed children 6 and under. Please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pediatrition to see if you meet requirements for Baxter Bear. In the week of 30 April to 6 May 2012 it is asthma awareness week. On Friday 6 May at City Focus between 10-11am there will be a children’s version of dance for asthma to fundraise to keep our services operating free for you. Feel free to go along and support this good cause. If you dance really well you could win a spot prize. From 11-1pm we will continue to do Dance for Asthma with spot prizes and have trained asthma nurses to answer any questions about asthma. Thank you to Korowai Aroha for organising this year’s exciting project!

Bunning’s Donation

Our treasurer, Katrina Wicks, received a $200 voucher from the Rotorua Bunning’s in April for Plunket Rotorua in recognition of the great service that Plunket provides to our children. Thank you very much Bunnings!
