Opening CeremonyThe 2014 Opening Ceremony will take place at 10.15am on Saturday 7thJune at Bracelet Bay car park. Everyone is welcome to join us from10.00am.

The festival will be opened by Andrew Price, presenter of ITV Wales’s“Coast and Country” series and operator of Gower based “Dryad BushcraftWales” - one of the UK’s leading Bushcraft and Survival schools(www.dryadbushcraft.co.uk).

10th Anniversary CelebrationsWe will be marking our 10th anniversary in style, with walks 36 and 37ending in a garden party featuring Derek Brockway, our Honorary Patron,on Saturday 14th June. We wish to thank Paul and Linda Griffiths forgenerously hosting our celebration in their restored garden “The Dingle”,Caswell. Linda is a professional garden designer and this will be a rareopportunity to admire her skills and learn about this garden’s history andrenovation.

Gower Landscape Partnership (GLP)The Festival is a signed up GLP partner, alongside seventeen otherorganisations that have come together in a collaborative agreement toprotect, conserve, manage, understand and inform on Gower’s specialqualities.

GLP is managing a number of significant initiatives designed to preserveand repair distinctive landscape and heritage features and to assist in theinterpretation and understanding of Gower.

GLP is funded for a four year period through the Heritage Lottery Fundunder its Landscape Partnership Programme, the Rural Development Planfor Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Government and theEuropean Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and other fundingpartners: Natural Resources Wales (NRW), the National Trust and the Cityand County of Swansea.

Gower AONB Partnership (AONB)The AONB is working to protect Gower for future generations and toenable everyone to appreciate the landscape, wildlife and culture ofGower. The AONB is co-ordinated by the City and County of Swansea, with financial support from NRW.

Countryside Connections (CC)CC is a project that connects people and communities to the countrysidethrough an interesting and varied programme of activities in rural wardsof Swansea. CC works in partnership with many organisations andindividuals to provide a wide range of conservation and rural heritagethemed opportunities for schools, community groups and visitors to thearea. Mumbles & Gower Tourist Information Centre (TIC)� The TIC and Gower Walking Festival are both part of the same

volunteer-led, not for profit organisation.

� Monies raised from Gower Walking Festival participants are used tosupport the TIC.

� The TIC’s enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful team provide awarm welcome and useful advice for Gower visitors, year-round.

� The TIC also offers a range of gifts, maps and guides which will helpyou make the most of your visit to Gower.

Walking on GowerWe believe that walking is the best way of exploring Gower. Although theFestival lasts just 16 days, all through the year many other organisationsoffer varied walks throughout the area. The City and County of SwanseaWalking Co-ordinator also supports and coordinates walking activities. Weare glad to be able to acknowledge their contribution. � All participants in the Gower Walking Festival do so at their own risk.

� Walk meeting points are indicated by the letter in the red circle alongsidethe walk title. The map on pages 56 and 57 shows these meeting points.Where meeting points may be difficult to locate, further information can befound on pages 58 and 59.

� Assistance dogs may accompany their owner on any land-based walkincluding walks that state no dogs.

� Please bring an emergency contact phone number and write it on the wristbracelet we will provide for you.

� Always wear suitable footwear and clothing and be prepared forunpredictable weather. An inadequately prepared person could affect thesafety and enjoyment of the whole group, so we reserve the right not totake a person who is not properly equipped.

� Some walks are suitable for dogs on short leads, but remember there areponies, sheep and cattle roaming on Gower.

� Distances of walks are approximate.

� Walks will start promptly, so please arrive at least 10 minutes before thestart time.

� Most walk leaders and backmarkers are volunteers.

� Bring along any medication you may need during the walk.

� It is always advisable to carry a drink and sun-protection. Some walkssuggest bringing a packed lunch. Bring snacks if you feel you may need them.

� Cars should be parked sensibly and locked, with no valuables on show.

� Walkers aged 16 or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

� All walks are circular unless stated.

� Check current timetables for bus information.

Walk Gradings & Symbols Easy: Mainly flat walking on paths with good surfaces. No steep hills or stiles.Few steps.

Some Exertion: Generally good surfaces with some inclines and/or steps andstiles.

Moderate: Varied landscapes, possibly with more challenging slopes. Stiles andsteps expected. Suitable for keen walkers who are reasonably active.

Strenuous: Challenging walk for fit and experienced walkers. Varied terrain, whichcould include steep gradients, stiles, steps and uneven surfaces.

7 June 2014 marks the 70th anniversary of the South Wales based US 2nd Infantry Division’slanding in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord. Many WW2 structures remain and this walkwill take you through a history of the site, now a Local Nature Reserve, from Napoleonic times tothe present day.

01 WALK TO CASWELL BY A PATH LESS TROD SAT 7 JUNE

This is a circular walk in the North Gower ward of Mawr. Initially climb to the lower slopes of PentwynMawr, via fields on the footpath from Cwmcerdinen. Swinging westwards behind the hillside chapelwe ascend Twyn Tyle, returning downhill past an environmental pond to our start point.

Additional Walk Meeting Point Information: The letters on the preceding map indicate the general area of walks, not precise walkmeeting points. In several cases, one letter represents the general location of more thanone walk eg. Mumbles, where there are 3 different start points within the vicinity ofMumbles. The actual meeting point of each walk is described (with an Ordnance Surveygrid reference) in each walk description.

Below, we have provided more detailed descriptions of walk meeting points that may bedifficult to locate.

Meeting Point : Blackpill/ClyneWalk 53 Only part of the car park is free. The pub’s own parking must be paid for.Walk 67 Clyne Farm Centre is located by driving west on the B4436 Mayals Road to thetop of Clyne Gardens (0.5 mile). Turn first right into Westport Avenue then right into theClyne Farm Centre at their green sign. Go to the farm buildings.

Meeting Point : BishopstonWalk 18 From Swansea, turn left off B4436 into Bishopston Road. Continue to junctionwith Pyle Road. Meet near Post Office at Pyle Corner by Brandy Cove Road.

Meeting Point : PenmaenWalk 28 At Penmaen turn right in front of the church, go over the cattle grid to theNational Trust car park on right.Walks 43 and 46 Rose Cottage car park is on the left of the A4118 just after 30mph limitsigns through Penmaen. Additional parking is available on the other side of the road up thefirst side road. (SS 525 885)

Meeting Point : Pilton GreenWalk 49 Follow B4247 from Scurlage towards Rhossili. South Pilton Green Farm is 1.4miles from Scurlage on the left. Turn left at the National Trust Omega sign onto a farm trackthrough the farmyard to the car park.

Meeting Point : Pitton CrossWalks 24 and 69 Follow B4247 from Scurlage towards Rhossili. Pitton Cross Caravan Parkis 2 miles from Scurlage on the left.

Meeting Point : RhossiliAll Rhossili walks start from points near the main car park.

Meeting Point : Llanmadoc / Cwm Ivy Walks 04, 25, 44 and 47 Drive through Llanmadoc. Turn right before church towards CwmIvy car park (signposted Whiteford Beach car park). For Walk 4 exit the car park on foot.Turn right down the lane to Cwm Ivy Court farm. Go through the gate and walk 600m downa metalled road to the start of the pine woods. At the coastal footpath sign bear right (northeastwards) for approximately 400m. The bunk house is on the left.Walks 26 and 57 The Britannia Inn is in the centre of Llanmadoc.Walk 71 Drive through Llanmadoc towards Whiteford Bay Leisure Park. Turn right over acattle grid down a lane immediately before reaching the Leisure Park entrance.

Meeting Point : Tankeylake Moor Walk 21 On grass verges on Llanridian to Llangennith Road. Near Llangennith, 100 metresafter cattle grid and past the “Tankeylake Livery” sign.

Meeting Point : PentrechwythWalk 08 Take A4217 north from Swansea. Turn right at Pentrechwyth sign. The car park isjust off the main road.

Meeting Point : White Rock Walk 66 From Swansea go north on A4217. On the first roundabout turn first leftimmediately into a narrow road to the car park.

Meeting Point : Fendrod Lake Walk 51 Fendrod Lake is in the Enterprise Park. Parking is opposite Bassetts Honda onValley Way.

Meeting Point : Penllergaer Walk 42 The Penllergare Visitor Centre is located off the A48 heading east from M4Junction 47. Take the first right into the new Visitor Centre car park near the council offices.

Meeting Point : PontarddulaisWalks 55 and 64 Take A48 west to Pontarddulais to first lights.Walk 55 At lights turn left onto B4296 (Pentre Road). Take first right into Coed Bach Park,where car parking is available.Walk 64 At lights turn right into Allt-Iago Road. Take third right to Dantwyn Road, almostimmediately turn right into Upper Mill Road. Park near little river bridge.

Meeting Point : Lliw Reservoir Walks 15 and 40 From M4 Junction 46 head north on B4489 to Felindre. Follow CountryPark signs. At Felindre Village sign turn right into Heol Penfidy. Follow signs for Lower Lliwreservoirs and park by café.

Meeting Point : Cwmcerdinen / Garnswllt Walks 07 and 35 Take the B4489 north from M4 Junction 46 through Felindre (Heol GlynDyfal) towards Garnswllt.Walk 07 Drive 6 miles from the M4. Meet on the grass verge near Cwmcerdinen.Walk 35 Carry on north for a further 1.5 miles into Garnswllt village. The Garnswllt ActivityCentre is on the right in the former Primary School.

Meeting Point : Cwm Clydach Walk 27 From M4 Junction 45 head north on A4067 towards Pontardawe. At secondroundabout (1.5 miles) turn left (onto B4291) towards Clydach. At mini-roundabout byVale works take first left, then immediately right into Vardre Road (Signposted Craig CefnParc B4291). This leads to Lone Road and Craig Cefn Parc. Soon after passing the New Innpub turn right into the RSPB reserve parking area.
