Pearl Jam Madison Square Garden

New York CityIt’s the evolution – and it’s taken a tight grip on this veteran rock band fromSeattle. Sounding sterling while celebrating its 25th anniversary, the grizzledyet still youthful Pearl Jam took over New York City’s Madison SquareGarden for a pair of recent performances. The dome-shaped sports area wasalive and well within the first few songs of the first night; as the bandexplained with some concern and humor, they could feel the floors shakingon the stage early on. Eddie Vedder and crew gave the radio junkies in thestands their fill of hits: “Jeremy,” “Porch,” and “Alive” were jammed on androcked the house. Yet, Pearl Jam also performed some deep cuts and B-sides such as “All Or None,” “Footsteps,” and “Chloe Dancer,” and all werespot on. The second night may have offered fewer songs, but the surprisescertainly made up for it: Rick Nielsen and Tom Peterson of Cheap Trickjoined Pearl Jam for a fine cover of “Surrender.” “Better Man” brought thecrowd to its feet, and the band allowed the audience to sing the majority ofthe ballad. Even with all these high spots, “Driven To Tears,” was the highlightof the second show as Sting shared the mic with Vedder, both sounding agedbut fine, much like the bottles of wine Vedder reportedly brings to his con-certs. The two-night scorecard: 67 songs, four encores, and three specialguests.

Bush The Paramount • Huntington

As the British rockers began their sold-out show, lead singer Gavin Rosedalegave his audience a quick smirk before erupting on “Everything Zen.” Givingthe band its first commercial success as its debut single in 1995, the songstill holds up as if it was new. Note-bending wizard (and Long Island-raised

guitarist) Chris Traynorproved why he landedthe lead guitarist spot inthe rejuvenation ofBush some years back.Rosedale fed off theaudience during “TheChemicals Between Us”and “Swallowed,” raising his hands in theair and soaking it all in.Although the lengthy ofhis notes have short-ened, his energy levelhasn’t; he circled thefloor during “LittleThings,” sounding determined. During hisperformance of“Glycerine,” women ofall ages made their wayto the front of the general admission areaand screamed “We love

you, Gavin.” The classic“Comedown” ended the night on the same high-octane level as it began.

When was the last time youattended a concert in which youknew every song and spent about 90 percent of the performance on your feet dancingand grinning? Is such a thingeven possible in today’s day andage of disposable pop songs?

Legendary artists tour sporadical-ly, and that iconic group continuesto get smaller. Live music fansdeserve the opportunity to see anon-stop feel good show that isfun for multi-generations – andthey find this with CreedenceClearwater Revisited.

The backbone of the group isStu Cook and Doug “Cosmo”Clifford, who are the Rock andRoll Hall of Fame rhythm section(bass and drums respectively)from the legendary groupCreedence Clearwater Revival(CCR). Cook and Clifford startedthe Revisited project in 1995when a friend wanted to promotea few concerts. They didn’t realizeat the time what a gap their performances would fill in the livemusic circuit and that they wouldwind up playing close to 100shows a year in the UnitedStates, Canada and abroad.

“We never really had any intention of playing for the public,”said Cook. “We got talked into it, but didn’t know how it would go over ... In the beginningCosmo and I decided that if wecould find the musicians thatcould capture the sound andrecreate what the music wasabout, we’d do it.”

Every song performed is aCreedence classic, and the multi-generational family

friendly audiences are treatedto this night after night aroundthe country and now the world. The band’s appeal has spreadinternationally as they haveperformed for thousands offans in Australia, New Zealand,Argentina, Chile, Brazil,

Europe, and Asia. Since the group’s inception in

the mid-90s, the reaction toCreedence Clearwater Revisited’sconcerts has been remarkable, driven in part by a generation ofkids who, as Cosmo says,

“Weren’t even born when themusic came out.” Likewise, therelease of a double-live CD onUniversal’s Hip-O Records label, which features passionate, authoritative versions of 22 classic hits, was the result of public demand.

“It was generated by requests of the people who cameto the shows,” said Cook. “Over and over they would ask, ‘do you guys have a CD?’”Creedence Clearwater Revisited’s Recollection hasproven so popular that in 2008 itwas certified platinum by theRIAA.

The band’s 2014 lineupincludes lead guitarist Kurt Griffey, who has recorded andtoured with members of TheEagles, Foreigner, The MoodyBlues, Wings, Lynyrd Skynryd,Santana, and Journey; leadsinger and guitar player JohnTristao (who rose to prominenceas lead singer for the bandPeople when their hit “I Love You”bulleted into the Top 10); and versatile Steve Gunner, who plays keyboards, acoustic guitar, percussion, and harmonica.

Even in a summer dominatedby Marvel this and DC that,we're giving this fantasy film abetter-than-decent chance ofhaving some legs. Based onthe mega-popular video gameseries, Warcraft's instantly recognizable characters andabove-average acting place thisfilm slightly above the usual thrown-togetherHollywood dross aimed at (choose your category) youth / slackers / nerds / your kidthat probably will never move out of the basement.

Those who attend this sort of adaptation

are usually in it for the action scenes, andWarcraft doesn't disappoint; director DuncanJones (in reality, David Bowie's son Zowie, whoalso was behind the lens for Source Code andMoon) is clearly a huge fan of video games; his

deft touch here brings the film the perfect noteof unbelievable eye-filling action mixed withfantasy whimsy.

Which isn't to say this a perfect night atwhat passes for “cinema” in this day and age.The fantasy world of Azeroth is the setting for aplot that's really just an excuse for all theCRASH! BOOM! POW!, and in many cases, some talented actors aren't given a whole lot todo other than brace for impact. However,Travis Fimmel, who portrays Durotan, an orcchieftain, manages to overcome the pounds ofcostuming he must wear to deliver a movingperformance as a father who is thrwarted in theinsane world he's forced to inhabit.

Warcraft, for the most part, works wellenough – even if you don't know a joystickfrom Joy Mangano.

Stuff Other Than Action At The 12-PlexNow You See Me 2 (Lionsgate): AnotherFour Horsemen adventure; the sequel is everybit as star-studded (Mark Ruffalo, JesseEisenberg,Woody Harrelson,Michael Caine,Daniel Radcliffe, Morgan Freeman) as theoriginal.Popstar: Never Stop, Never Stopping(Universal): As a film actor, Andy Samberg isthe new Will Forte, who was the new TimMeadows, who was the new Rob Schneider.

Executives from TV networks gathered inNew York three weeks ago to make presentations of their 2016-17 programs at theannual “upfronts.” While the emphasis was onprime-time offerings, sports were emphasized:

Fox, which finally bid farewell to “AmericanIdol,” made sure that everyone knew that theywould be the home ofSuper Bowl LI and the2016 World Series. InSeptember Fox willlaunch a new drama,“Pitch,” which imagineswhat it would be like ifMajor League Baseballhad a female pitcher. The show’s executivesare from Philadelphia,so it’s safe to say thatthe 2014 exploits of thethen 13-year-old Mo’neDavis in the LittleLeague World Serieswere an inspiration.MLB, which has a longpartnership with Fox,sees this show as agreat way of expandingits fan base; it's lettingthe show use SanDiego’s Petco Park and

team names and logos to give it a realistic feel.Former big leaguers Gregg Olson and RoyceClayton are serving as technical advisers.

ESPN touted that they offer more hours oflive programming than any other network, andthat attracts premium advertisers. “First Take”co-host Stephen A. Smith paid tribute to hisformer debating partner, Skip Bayless, rumored to be joining Fox Sports 1; Smith toldme after the presentation that he has four orfive replacements in mind for Bayless’ spot.ESPN always adds glitz by bringing in star

athletes to its upfront, suchas New York Mets pitcherNoah Syndergaard, whotook the stage of TheMinskoff Theater withSportsCenter host ScottVan Pelt. I askedSyndergaard if he wasaware of five-year-oldAshtin Gerberg ofWilmington, NorthCarolina who has becomea social media sensationwith his long blond hair,“Mini-Thor” nickname, and blazing fastball: “Ohyes. The kid has excellentmechanics,” a smilingSyndergaard said.

Turner Entertainmentis making a big bet onvideo game competitionbeing for them what the XGames were to ESPN a

generation ago; the network will present“Eleague” on Fridays, as gamers compete forbig money. ESPN also has e-sports shows inits hopper, but CEO John Skipper is not goingall-in the way that Turner counterpart DavidLevy is.

Square-jawed World WrestlingEntertainment hero John Cena has kept busyoutside of the ring the past few years with athriving acting career; he showed a surprisingflair for comedy in Amy Schumer's Trainwrecklast summer. Cena is the host of Fox’s“Survivor”-style reality series, “American Grit,”and he's going to host ESPN's “ESPYs” inJuly. Yet, WWE fans don’t have to worry aboutCena going away from pro wrestling the waythat both “Stone Cold” Steve Austin andDwayne “The Rock” Johnson have. “I alwayswant to be a part of the WWE,” said Cena atthe “upfront.” “It’s my primary affiliation.”

Univision sports chairman Juan CarlosRodriguez is a passionate soccer fan, and it’sno shock that it’s the only sport on theSpanish-speaking network. Univision will beshowing the battle for Western Hemispheresoccer superiority in a couple of weeks withthe Copa America Centenario. Rodriguez didsurprise a lot of folks when he announced thatUnivision gets more viewers for the Mexicanpro soccer federation, Liga MX, than NBCSports does for The English Premier League.Rodriguez also announced that Univision willsponsor a Soccer World Series, a futbol version of the Little League World Series.

many smaller ones as they have had in thepast, probably as a way of containing costs. The end result was that there wasn’t enoughtime devoted to anything. Instead of promoting its upcoming Summer OlympicGames or introducing its newest sportscaster,Mike Tirico, the long NBC Sports moment wasa head-scratching video of NBC Sports head

Mark Lazarus and Arizona Cardinalswide receiver Larry Fitzgerald bakingcupcakes.

The 75th annual Peabody Awardsserved as the unofficial end of NewYork’s television week; Jon Stewartreceived a lifetime achievementaward. The comedian is a diehardMets fan; when I asked if he was worried about pitcher Matt Harvey,Stewart vertically shook his head inan elongated manner and said in aslow deep voice, “Oh yeah! Andmaybe we have to start worryingabout (Jacob) deGrom as well, sincehe gave up four runs in fiveinnings to the Brewerstoday.” When Stewart wastold that the Mets won thegame 5-4 on a walk-off single by David Wright, hemused: “You mean that hehit a ball out of the infield?”

Howie Rose will deviteall of his energy to callingNew York Mets games fromhere on out, as he has

relinquished his MSGNetwork play-by-play duties for NewYork Islanders games. Rose, 62,cited that he wanted to have moretime off during the off-season. Headmitted to me that calling hockeygames takes a toll on his voice, andhe did not want to risk damage to

his vocal chords. My guess is that Rose, wholives on the South Shore, did not enjoy shlepping to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, andthat had to be a factor as well in his decision.

The New York Knicks and Brooklyn Netsbreathed a sigh of relief after the NBA DraftLottery. Neither team has a first-round draftchoice because of bad trades. In 2013, theKnicks dealt their top 2016 choice to theToronto Raptors for the dreadful AndreaBargnani. That same year, the Nets sent their2014, 2016, and 2018 first-round picks to theBoston Celtics in an even worse deal for anaging triumvirate of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry.

This summer marks the 11th-yearanniversary of The Long IslandComedy Festival, the brainchild of comedy impresario and executive producer (as well as a hilarious standupin his own right) Paul Anthony; it's the

yearly comedy event that, in quite literalterms, has taken this region by storm; lastyear’s edition was the most successful yet.

"We'reexcited to bemarking 11years of bringing theannual sum-mer ComedyFestival toLong Island,”said Anthony.

“Long Islanders have really supported ourcomedy showcases over the past 10

summers, and we appreciate that tremendously … The 11-year mark isa testament to Long Islanders'love for live standup comedy performances. Long Island hashad a strong history of comic actscoming from this region, and we'reglad to be a part of the comedyscene here and to showcase somany comedians not only fromLong Island, but from the NewYork City comedy scene and fromaround the country and beyond.Over the course of the summertour, we will feature more than 50 comedians. That's a lot of laughs!Long Island audiences are really incredible."

According to Anthony, The Long IslandComedy Festival's mission is to promote theart of live standup comedy, with each performance featuring the best comic talentfrom Long Island, the New York City comedyscene, and around the world. In past summers, the Festival has presented come-dians from as far away as Australia, Ireland, and the UK.

Something new is also coming this season from Long Island Comdey: The

launch of the new “50+ Comedy Tour,” whichwill be a part of the Festival. This facet of thetour will featuring lineups of comedians whoall are over the age of 50; the first event willbe Friday, August 26 at Theatre Three in PortJefferson.

Take it from us: If you haven't heardof some of the comedians of the LICF,don't let that dissuade you; these regular shows feature both veteran andup-and-coming comedy stars, and theshows rank among the best entertainment values in Long Islandyear after year. And after having oursides split many times by the likes ofAnthony, Stevie GB, Robin Fox, BillMcCarty, and so many others, we'reconvinced that once you try one LICFcomedy show you'll become a regularall season long.

Now, on to themost important part, mirth mavens: Thisyear's Long IslandComedy Festival (moreshows will be added inthe coming weeks),complete with venuesand a roster of standupcomics (at press time, lineups subject to

Kai ElleLI’s ‘Dynamo’ Goes Global

Who: Singer, songwriter, and pianist Kai Elle – her fans rememberher as Long Island's Kyle Lardner, who several years back releasedthe well-receivedSail Among TheStars – hasreleased a new EP,Dynamo, nowavailable at iTunesand Amazon.Released concurrently withthe EP was a videofor the effort’s firstsingle,“St. Barths,”which now can beviewed at YouTubeand other onlinevideo streamingservices.

The EPcontains five tracksthat Ellie – who also is making a serious mark as a model and yogainstructor – have been working on for some time, including the titletrack, “St. Barths,” “The Queen,” “It Girl,” and “The Wedding Song(Heartbeat).” Elle has struck gold since heading to California; she'sreleased a single featuring British superstar Robbie Williams (“CarryOn”) and scored a scad of modeling assignments and publicappearances.

The Artist & Her Sound: It’s a total rebirth: Those who got to knowElle from the singer/songwriter-style strains of Sail Among The Starsare in for a bit of a shock. The devastatingly beautiful young singerhas become the ultimate anti-hippie, offering anthems of hedonism, the high life, and unabashed self-devotion. “St. Barth’s,”the first single, is not only can’t-shake-it catchy, but is also the firstsong we’ve heard that merges hip hop-style braggadocio (“My musicis off the charts,” she croons) with a blatant love of luxury (“We’regoing on yachts ... I’m livin’ it up/I ain’t goin’ back to the old days,” she

sings). Therest of thesongs depicta sort of I’m-becoming-one-of-the-beautiful-people hubristhat somemight consider egotistical, butin reality the

songs Ellie currently is composing seem to openly reflect the actual lifestyle she’sliving in California – or perhaps she’s satirizing what she’s seeing allaround her, pretty much what Katy Perry has done for the past fewyears, but there’s a difference: Elle has traded typical pop star mannerisms for something that’s actually artistic. She never oversings, instead favoring a muted, almost dream-like delivery. Indoing so, she’s become a daring artist not afraid to express her trueself, a vertitable Carly Simon for this new era of excess. – Bob Smith

From The“St. Barths”Video

Goodbye, Holly: I hopped ontoThe Long Island Railroad andheaded into Penn Station in midtown Manhattan, about anhour and then some from myhome in Suffolk County. I had tobe present for the homage to

Holly Woodlawn, one of the fantastic creatures that turned mylife around in the early 1970s. Onthe train ride into the city, I wasstill processing the information;my important years, my late teenyears, were the birth of glitter /glam years, and Holly was animportant part of that for me. LouReed and David Bowie werealready gone, and now Holly. I had not solong agohelped toget a videoof "Boys"ontoYouTube;Holly finallywas on a“record” ofsorts, alongsideher lifelongfriendJayneCounty, withGingerCoyote,CherryVanilla,ConstanceCooper, and an array of rock &rollers. Holly always wanted toleave behind a music memento ofher time on Earth, and here itwas.

Now I was walking into LaMama / The Ellen Stewart Theatreon East 4th Street downtown forthis gathering of the local tribe.Penny Arcade put this programtogether with Jeremiah Newton(who I met outside La Mama, andmanaged to provide a helpinghand to) and Steve Zehentner, and she did an outstanding job ofkeeping a lid on things and making sure that the trains ran ontime, so to speak. Once inside, Iran into NYC icons Michael Alagoand Tony Zanetta, and in themidst of our chat fest, I wasapproached by folks who knewme, even though we had never

met; once again, the wonders ofsocial media were revealed.

It dawned on me that in all mydecades of covering and partici-pating in the NYC rock/arts scenethat I had never set foot inside thehistoric landmark that is La Mama.

I heard numerous tales oftheater, and working withthe once-in-a-lifetime personality that is JohnVacarro from the lips of

Jayne County and Cherry Vanilla. Now, finally, I was present, in theroom before the doors opened, towitness the meticulous soundchecks, lighting and staging, anda production in its own right. Icould only imagine some of thegoings-on that took place in thisspace through the years, and weheard many hilarious and hair-raising accounts from the sur-

vivors whogot up tospeak andshare theirthoughtsand memories.

Heartfelttestimoni-als weredeliveredby MichaelMusto,EldaStilleto,JohnVacarro,Ruby LynnReyner,and Holly'sarchivistRobert

Coddington, to name just a few ofthe downtown “who's who” thatwere in attendance. Music performances by Chris Tannerand Lance Cruce as well as TheLavender Light Gospel Choir weremoving; interspersed were variousvideo collections, performances, and remembrances of Holly, which brought the gatheredcrowd to tears, laughter, andapplause, all the things that Hollylived for.

The entire event was streamedworldwide while it happened, andis now preserved for permanentviewing online for those who couldnot make it. I highly suggest thatyou make the time and take thetime to experience this event init's entirety; it was a night we'lllong remember.

Rest in peace, Holly Woodlawn.
