The lauded nationallytouring tribute to theeternal “Fab Four” –Rain: A Tribute ToThe Beatles – returnsto the area for twoheadlining shows onFebruary 21 at 2 and8 pm at The NYCBTheatre At Westbury.Tickets are on salenow; log on to ticketmaster.com orthetheatreatwest-bury.com for information. To orderby phone, call ChargeBy Phone at (800) 745-3000.

It's not often thata sincere tribute to alegendary bandbecomes a nationallytouring sensation inits own right, butthat's exactly what has occurred with thisunique presentation. Rain: A Tribute To TheBeatles is a live multi-media spectacular thattakes fans on a musical journey through thelife and times of the world’s most celebratedband. Going further than before, the new edition of Rain adds more hits from the vastanthology of Beatles classics, including “I WantTo Hold Your Hand,” “Hard Day’s Night,”“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “LetIt Be,” “Come Together,” and “Hey Jude,” toname but a few.

This concert event takes fans back in timewith the legendary foursome delivering a note-for-note theatrical event that many of its fansclaim is the next best thing to The Beatles. Ifthe name of this show sounds familiar, itshould – the original production of Rain ran onBroadway for 300 shows (and eight previewperformances) at The Brooks Atkinson Theatrein New York City; the original stint lasted fromOctober 2010 to July 2011. Here's another interesting tidbit about Rain: This show actually pre-dates Beatlemania, another showthat ran on Broadway, by several years.

Mark Lewis, who served as afounding memberand keyboarist ofthis tribute act, aswell as manaager –looked back withpride on the tour'sofficial website.

“I’m proud to saythat I was therewhen America tunedinto 'The Ed SullivanShow' and saw TheBeatles presented toa nation for the firsttime,” recalledLewis. “I rememberwhat it was like totake the plastic wrapoff of a Meet TheBeatles LP, and beintroduced to all ofthese classic songsfor the first time. I

remember looking forward to each new Beatlessong, not knowing that these songs wouldevolve into universally accepted classic con-temporary music that would last for severalgenerations, if not eternity ... Our goal hasalways been to present this music in a liveenvironment to audiences throughout theworld, and most importantly, to maintain theintegrity of The Beatles, and their music. Afterall, it is their music. We are just a few very fortunate guys that get to perform this musicnight after night. What’s better than that?”

The Boy Next DoorStarring Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Guzman, JohnCorbett, Kristen ChenowithDirected by Rob CohenUniversal

January has historically been the month when filmstudios dump less-than-desirable product into movietheaters. When you add a film to that mix starringJennifer Lopez, whose alleged talent has long escapedmany, into the equation, the results are almost guaranteed to be astonishingly awful. Yes – The BoyNext Door certainly doesn’t buck the odds.

Claire Peterson (Lopez) is a high school literatureteacher, but of course “J-Lo” is not going to let playingan educator stop her character from wearing the latestclothes, sport model-like hair and makeup, and live in aSouthern California mansion. All is not peaches andcream, however, as she is separated from her husband,Garrett (Corbett), an information technology executive. Claire caught Garrett cheating on her during a San Francisco business trip. Claire’s dorky teenage son,Kevin (Ian Porter) desperately needs a fatherly or bigbrotherly figure.

Right on cue in steps Noah Sandborn (Guzman), astrapping 20 year-old from San Bernardino who hasmoved next door to Claire so that he can take care of hisailing grand-uncle. Noah can quote ancient Greek literature, fix pesky garage doors, and take apart and put back together any car’s engine.

He asks Claire to come over and help him roast achicken on a rare, rainy Saturday night in SouthernCalifornia, and one thing leads to another, wink wink. The fact that Guzman, a former mixed martial arts star, looks like a combination of Channing Tatum, JasonPriestley, and James Franco makes this steamy scene with“J-Lo” credible, which is more than can be noted formost of this film. Like Lopez, Guzman gets to wear

preppy clothes for the entire film, which adds to hishunk factor. He looks like a Nautica or Polo RalphLauren model; in fairness, he does possess some actingability.

Of course, there are the expected regrets on Claire’spart the following morning. When she tries to break it toNoah gently that theirs was a wonderful one-night thingthat won’t ever be repeated, he turns into a raving, maniacal stalker who will do whatever is necessary to make sure that she never reconciles with her estrangedhusband who, is trying to patch things up; it will be over the ex-hubby’s dead body if they do.

The Boy Next Door goes downhill rapidly, as novicescreenwriter Barbara Curry turns this movie into a poorversion of one of CBS’s many primetime procedurals. The audience at the screening I attendedstarted laughing as is they were watching one of the“Scary Movie” sequels, as Claire idiotically puts herself

into one risky situationafter another withoutusing a shred of common sense – such asbreaking into Noah’sbasement when he isn’thome to try to find thevideo he made of theirlovemaking session, orentering the home of afriend who is in dangereven though the electricity has beenturned off and it’s pitchblack outside. Add tothis nonsense the over-the-top burningfarmhouse finale, whichis straight from clichécinema 101.

Just about the onlytime when The Boy NextDoor provides any true

food for thought is a scene where Claire’s best friend,Vicki (the always welcome Chenoweth), sets up a doubledate for them. During the dinnertime conversation,Claire tells her date that she teaches “the classics,” andshe is upset with his reaction. “The classics are nice, butwe need to prepare students for the jobs in the workforce as well,” he replies. The scene abruptly ends with the filmmakers trying hard to make the guy look like a jerk, when in fact there is a lot of merit to his point. The reality is that expensive liberal arts colleges are under a lot of scrutiny exactly because there is a disconnect between what is taught and itsvalue in the economic marketplace.

In this new film’s defense, it can be argued that, likeShowgirls, Saturday matinees, or those cheesy Ed Wood movies, The Boy Next Door is so bad that it’s actually good.

MortdecaiStarring Johnny Depp, Gywenth Paltrow,Olivia Munn, Paul Bettany, Jeff Goldbum,Ewan McGregorDirected by Davidd KoeppLionsgate

It's been a comedy tradition for as long asmovies have been around: Take a bunch offunny people, put them in a wacky situation, and let them do what they do best. In thesetype of all-star ensemble comedies, there havebeen hits (It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World),middling successes (This Is The End, RatRace), and utter disasters (Clue, Murder ByDeath). The key, of course, is to cast reallyfunny performers in roles that bring out thewacky best in them.

Which brings us to the Pink Panther (orworse yet, Johnny English) wannabeMortdecai, which casts exceptionally talented, world class actors … who aren't particularlyfunny, not in the least. “But wasn't Johnny Deppfunny as Captain Jack Sparrow?” ask film fans.Yeah, sort of, but that was mainly because hewas given decent material to work with. Mortdecai (jeez, every time welook at the title, it looks misspelled) looks andfeels unfinished and rushed; it's as if theydecided to release this oddball film simplybecause they had to (and, apparently, that

might be the case; Lionsgate actually movedup the release of this movie a couple of weeks, reportedly to keep it away from competingwith the stronger slate of February filmdebuts). And, if anyone's counting, this marksonly one of several Depp misfires in recentyears; he's been unable to parlay his success as Sparrow into anything else worth seeing –

unless you count The Lone Ranger,Dark Shadows, and The Rum Diaryas modern cinematic classics.

To be fair, Mortdecai is actuallybetter than the movies listed above, since Depp is willing to try just about anything to get alaugh. However, it's pretty odd to see such a fine actor forced into tongue-wagging, eye-rollingland; here, it's as if his art dealer character is a mix of John Cleeseand “Curly” Joe DeRita as he runsamuck trying to recapture a stolenpainting. It's a handsome cast thatbacks him, to be sure, but when youthink of slapstick, witty jibes, andeven such things as precisely timedcomedic banter, the last people we'd think of would be GwyenthPaltrow, Ewen McGregor, and theincredibly miscast Olivia Munn, whose stunning beauty seems tohide the fact that she has the thespian chops of, well, a G4

video game show host. There are some nifty pratfalls, some

interesting attempts by the cast at accents, andsome really beautiful locations, but all in all, this plays like what it's destined to be in 18months: A Saturday afternoon filler feature onChannel 9 just before the college football gamecomes on.

Last month, the New York Jets introduced newgeneral manager Mike Maccagnan and new

head coach Todd Bowles. Maccagnan, who was incharge of college scouting for the Houston Texans, grew up in Hightstown, New Jersey, the mythical“halfway point” between New York andPhiladelphia; he has the voice of a mellifluous radio broadcaster. Bowles realizes that he has atough job ahead replacing the personable Rex Ryan, and seemed a bit stiff in the early Q&Aexchanges at the press conference, but loosened up considerably when he was asked about his personality. “I have so many sides to me that I amlike a male Sybil,” he said with a laugh that wentover well with the press.

Jets owner Woody Johnson said some interestingthings that were not picked up by the dailies orelectronic media, as he admitted that he knew thatthe 2014 Jets did not have a lot of talent, and that hemight not have fired GM John Idzik and Rex Ryan

had they been on the samepage, regardless of theteam’s record. The fact thatit was an open secret thatneither man was enthralledwith the other cost themboth their jobs.

The conventional wisdomwas that the Jets were goingafter Doug Marrone, aBronx native and the formerhead coach of SyracuseUniversity, after he chose toopt out of his contract ashead coach of the BuffaloBills. Unfortunately forMarrone, the Bills hired Rex

Ryan to be their head coach, and there was no waythat Johnson wanted to risk embarrassment if thatcoaching “trade” did not work out in his favor.

From all accounts, Brooklyn Nets forward MirzaTeletovic is lucky to be alive. He told head coachLionel Hollins that he was having trouble runningup and down the court in a game against theClippers in Los Angeles. Hollins immediatelyremoved him from the game, and he was sent to anemergency room in a nearby hospital, where testresults found numerous blood clots in his lungs.Apparently, Teletovic had been experiencing respiratory issues for a few days, according toteammate Bojan Bogdanovic. The lesson here is thatif you feel any symptoms of anything unusual, don’t wait to seek medical attention. Even athletes, who train to be in top physical condition, are notexempt from unexpected maladies.

It had been a long time since a basketball game

energized Madison Square Garden the way that therecent sold-out Duke versus St. John’s game did.Although the Red Storm were the nominal home

team, it seemed as if there were a lot of Blue Devilsfans that were loudly anticipating head coach Mike“Coach K” Krzyzewski’s 1,000th win as a collegehead coach. In a back and forth affair, Duke pulledit out with a big late second half run, 77-68.

Top 15 Statements/Excuses That Should Be Banned:Now that we've reached the halfway point in the leaguebowling season, we hereby declare a moratorium on thefollowing phrases from the sport, or else we may pullour hair out by May:

“Hey, I bowled my average.” Throw him/her/it off theteam at the end of the season (or the first half, if you stillhave the option).

“(Insert bowling center name) doesn't oil the lanes right.”Hey, Jasper – you're such an expert, please show us howit's done. Then name the pattern. And tell us what kindof oil is used on bowling lanes. And while you're fixingthe problem by laying down the oil “right,” apply it witha toothbrush.

“I don't know what kind of oil they used tonight, but thelanes are different this week.” Must have been discardedfrom KFC, right?

“Yeah, but pro bowlers have it easy. Look at the souped-upballs the use.” Say what? The pro shop has those samerocks, and you can walk in and buy one, too.

“See the guy that bowled a 161 on the PBA on Sunday? Icould have done that.” No, 45-year-old gray-haired guywho is also an accountant, you couldn't.

“Get offa the lanes! Get offa the lanes!!!” Second-shiftleague bowlers, who then start bowling at a “too late”9:13 pm, only to leave at 12:17 am regardless of whenthey started.

“That's a 'weak' ball. I'd never throw a 'weak' ball.”Actually, the bowling ball industry is to blame for thisone – describing balls with lower hook ratings as“weak.” Of course, those type of cores and coverstocksare exactly what some bowlers need, but since they sellfor $150 instead of $220? Shh … oh, and while we're at it …

Pro shop operator: “That 'weak” ball won't hit as hard asthese over here.” The next time you hear that, ask to seethe credentials of that “pro.”

“It's $10 extra for a thumb slug.” Again, find another proshop.

“Never use a re-drilled ball.” Jeez, you're still there?“Our advanced ball cleaner contains special ingredients spe-

cially designed to remove belt marks, stains, and dirt.” Yep –sort of like the active ingredient in Windex, which is alsoused … in more than a few ball cleaners. And did youever notice many ball cleaners don't list any ingredients at all on the labels? We can only assume thecleaner contains magic!

“A bowler that good should really be in a men's scratchleague.” You're in the same league, Betty Lou – what'sthat say about you?

“He's a sandbagger.” We have no evidence that anyone, anywhere, has ever “sandbagged.”

“He's only that good because he practices all the time.”Well, duh!

“I can't make it to league this week; my (pet/spouse/boss)has an (ailment/birthday/bug up his or her butt).” Pleaserefer to the first quote.

Baseball lost a great ambassador in formerChicago Cubs great Ernie Banks, who died twoweeks ago at the age of 83. I never met Banks, but I did see him play. Mets fans will rememberthat he was part of the hated 1969 Cubs team managed by Leo Durocher that had little regard for the “Amazin’ Mets.” I remember NBC’s TonyKubek interviewing Ernie Banks in the stands atShea Stadium during the 1969 World Series as theMets were upsetting the heavily favored BaltimoreOrioles. Banks said that while he wished that hecould have been playing in that World Series, headmired what the Mets team had accomplished andwas rooting for them. That was a classy thing forhim to say.

We lost a terrific sportswriter two weeks agoas former New York Daily News and Newark Star-Ledger NFL reporter (as well as longtimeRockville Centre resident) Paul Needell died atthe too-young age of 57. I met Paul in the early 1990s when I started covering the Jets’summer training camp at Hofstra University.Paul welcomed me and he never “big leagued”me the way that a number of insecure sportswriters from the daily papers did (and some still do) to writers from smaller outlets.

In a sports story that is every bit as weird as that of the New England Patriots deflatingfootballs, former New Jersey Devils ArenaEntertainment president Richard Krezwick is suing New Jersey Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello for $2.3 million for falsely accusing him of mismanaging the Prudential Center. Krezwick claims that when he and other executives received their pink slips,

Lamoriello took a seat in the lobby where theemployees elevator was and laughed at those who were carrying boxes of their possessions out of the arena. I met Krezwick when he was a speaker at a Sports Business Journal conference in 2012, and I have met Lamoriellomany times over the years. While I cannot obviously vouch for all of the merits of the lawsuit, my gut feeling is to believe Krezwick.

The annual New York Times Travel Show tookplace recently at The Javits Center in New YorkCity. Sports is finally getting its due as a driver oftourism, as Scranton, Pennsylvania promoted that

the Yankees top minor league team plays in its newballpark there, while The Lehigh Valley Convention& Visitors Bureau was promoting the just-openedPPL Arena, home to The Allentown Phantoms, theAmerican Hockey League affiliate of ThePhiladelphia Flyers. The St. Lucie County (Florida)Tourism Bureau reminded everyone who passed bythat it’s the spring training home of the New YorkMets. A surprise was that Westchester tourism officials did not promote the Knicks’ new NBADevelopmental League franchise in White Plains.Atlantic City officials are trying to lure a minorleague team to its underutilized Sandcastle Stadiumas a way of drawing tourists now that it’s apparentthat casino gambling can no longer be relied uponto enrich the resort town’s economy.

My sportswritingcolleague from TheBronx News, RichMancuso, who manyof you rememberfrom his earlySunday morningwrestling segment on WFAN with JodyMcDonald back inthe day, has a newshow on Internetradio. You can hearMancuso host “Bases Are Covered” oninthemixxradio.comTuesdays at 8 pm.Your phone calls will be welcomed.

He's been a songwriter, a sought-after side-man, and a superstar in his own right: The legendary Leon Russell makes an ultra-rarearea appearance when he headlines The SpaceAt Westbury on Thursday, February 18 at 8pm. Tickets are now on sale; log on to thespaceatwestbury.com for more information.

There's isn't a lot Russell has not done during his career, now into its seventh decade. The pianist from Tulsa, Oklahoma has beenperforming his gospel-infused southern boogiepiano rock, blues, and country music for as farback as any classic rock fan can remember. Forhis efforts, Russell was inducted into both TheRock and Roll Hall Of Fame and theSongwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011.

Recent times seem to have been as fruitfulfor Russell as his “heyday” was. UniversalMusic released Leon Russell’s latest CD, Life

Journey, on April 1 last year; the disc was pro-duced by another legend in Tommy LiPuma, and made a surprising assault on the Billboard200 – not bad for a musician who is now in his70s. Russell and Elton John toured together in2010 after release of their duet album, TheUnion. "If It Wasn’t For Bad" from the albumwas nominated for a Grammy Award for BestPop Collaboration with Vocals.

Of course, many fans know Russell from

his work with Joe Cocker, who died just a few weeksago. Russell led the famousCocker “Mad Dogs &Englishmen” tour, and laterperformed with GeorgeHarrison & Friends at TheConcert For Bangladesh, oneof the biggest events in thehistory of Madison SquareGarden. Russell has alsotoured with Delaney &Bonnie And Friends, EdgarWinter, The New GrassRevival, and Willie Nelson.

Still other music fansknow Russell for his originalsong compositions, whichhave been covered by toomany artists to list here. Twoof his most famous tunes: “ASong For You” (covered andreleased by more than 40artists, including Cocker, TheCarpenters, Ray Charles,Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson,Helen Reddy, WhitneyHouston, Elkie Brooks, Amy Winehouse, DonnyHathaway, and ChristinaAguilera); and “Delta Lady” (made famous during the Woodstock era by Cocker, and later recorded by a plethora ofartists running the gamut of pop music styles).

Killed On The Basepaths: Withthe NFL's “Big Game” nowpart of sports history, here's anitem that should bring warmthto the heart of embattled NFLCommisioner Roger Goodell, but frowns to the faces of theowners of the New York Metsand Yankees, thanks to TheHarris Poll: Back in 1985, therewas only a one-point difference between the percentage of American adultswho followed at least onesport and considered pro football (24 percent) or baseball (23 percent) to betheir favorite. At present,"America's pastime" remains inthe past, as pro football ranks asAmerica's favorite sport – now bya 16-point margin over baseball.

Pro football is the top pickamong 32 percent of sports fans, while baseball only garners"favorite" status among half asmany Americans (16 percent). However, baseball enthusiasts canfeel good that their sport of choicehas managed a two percent pointincrease from last year's 14 percent, while football saw athree-point decrease from 2013's35 percent – meaning the gapbetween the two narrowed by fivepoints year-over-year. These aresome of the results of The Harris

Poll of 2,255 U.S. adults surveyedonline between December 10 and15, 2014.

As if only to reaffirm thesport's widespread appeal, men's college football comes in asAmerica's third favorite sport, with 10 percent of adults supporting its claim, though, like its professional counterpart, this sport has also seen a narrow decrease from last year's 11 percent. The next two top sports have maintainedtheir same fan percentages,

with auto racing at seven percent, and men's pro basketballpart of a three-way tie at six per-cent. Tied with basketball at sixpercent and up from only twopercent from last year, the most noteworthy increase across theboard, men's soccer has made thelist of America's top five favoritesports. The final member of thesix percent three-way-tie forAmerica's fifth favorite sport is icehockey, most beloved by one percent more of the population compared with last year (five percent).

Why do we watch? When TheHarris Poll asked Americans who enjoy watching sports what

it is they actuallyenjoy about the experience, thelargest percentage (63 percent) confirmed that theyenjoy watchingbecause of the skill involved. Trans Rocking: With the pop cultureuniverse seemingly laser-focused ontrans people these days – with muchof that attention aimed in theKardashians-crazed direction ofBruce Jenner – I am honored to serveas a conduit for long time fave andRhythm Tracking pal Jayne County toshare her thoughts on what may turnout to be the most talked-about transition in pop culture history. Ican't think of anyone better qualified,as Wayne became Jayne in the late70s before it was “fashionable,” andsuffered in various ways for being“man enough to be a woman.”

Here is Jayne County's open letter to Bruce Jenner:

Bruce:

I have been following the media's coverage of your choices and image inthe past few months with mixed reactions. I have the feeling that youmight be torn as to what is your nextmove, or if there even will be a nextmove. Regardless, you shouldremain true to your own feelings, to who you really are,and bravely make whatever sort ofstatement you choose to make, inaddition to the visual statements that are reaching thepublic eye on a regular basis, withsome media outlets dismissing it all as “publicity.”

I have been down this road inearlier, more unenlightened times. As Wayne County, performing on the 1970s NY/UKglam into punk scene, I performed in female garb, and mysignature song became "(Are You)Man Enough To Be A Woman." Ihad my detractors, in the daysbefore there were LGBT groups ororganizations, and when even gaymen frowned upon the shadow“trans” community; when I transitionedfrom Wayne to Jayne, the

formerly friendly music press sawme as a punching bag for theirtransphobic comments, or simplydecided to pretend that I didn'texist, attempting to negate mypunk rock legacy.

Times are different now, but inmany ways, not so different. I hopeyou find the strength to choose apath and share it in a public manner, for the trans community, but most importantly for yourself. You will find more support for yourdecision than you might imagine.– Jayne County

More On Marky: A true survivor of the 70s NYC rock scene,Marky Ramone, who I remember asMarc Bell, has a new autobiography,Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As ARamone, out now via Simon &Shuster. Marc first came to my attention in the early 70s when Ireceived a promo copy of Dust, athree piece heavy (very heavy) metalband for whom he drummed. Afterauditioning for The New York Dolls(they chose Jerry Nolan), Marcbecame the drummer for WayneCounty & The Backstreet Boys, andthen Richard Hell & The Voidoidsbefore taking the drum seat in TheRamones when original memberTommy Ramone stepped down. What a resume! What stories Marchas to tell! The entire year-by-yearhistory of the New York City rockscene (back when it mattered)unfolds before you in this book.Never mind the CBGB film – this isthe movie that has to be made. Rock& roll fans need to get their hands on this book.
