Global Warming:China and India
By: Aadil Khan, Adel Badran, Rafid Azad, Shafkat Haque Pd. 2
Current Global Warming Effect CHINA● Accounts for nearly
10% of Greenhouse Gases in the Atmosphere
● Currently the world's largest producer of GHG and world's largest CO2 emitter
● Produces more CO2 than many developed countries such as the U.S.
INDIA● Accounts for nearly
3% of Greenhouse Gases in the Atmosphere
● Currently the world's 5th largest producer of GHG.
● Agricultural sector produces high amounts of methane and manufacturing industry requires massive coal consumption.
Environmental ProblemsFloods in India reach levels where people cannot even live in their houses. This will affect the lives of many people and may leave thousands homeless.
Droughts in India destroy crops and ruin soil. These droughts will increase the price of grain and will affect many farmers and customers.
More Environmental Problems
Melting Glaciers in the Himalayas may deprive the use of the major rivers of China and India. These glaciers might be completely gone by 2035.
The Yangtze river depends on the Himalaya's glaciers. The river is starting to become smaller and will negatively impact the lives of 147 million people
Under the Kyoto Protocol...● China signed the Kyoto Protocol in 1998 and India has
ratified the Kyoto Protocol in 2002● Under the Kyoto Protocol China and India are listed as
developing nations so thy are not required to limit their GHG emissions
● Only developed nations have to reduce their GHG emissions by 5.2% from their 1990 levels but this restriction does not apply to developing countries as this will affect their economic and technological growth
Since the Kyoto Protocol
Developed World's Arguement
● China and India should be given the same restrictions as developed countries
● Needs China & India to cut down on coal consumption and look for alternative energy sources
● At the current rate of China and India's emissions it would prove to be more disastrous than beneficial
● To increase industrialization and economic growth, GHG emissions are needed
● Argues historically these developed nations has produced as much or more emissions per capita as China and India
● Leaders of China and India have publicly said they will not sacrifice economic growth for emission cuts
China and India's Arguement
China and India's Arguement
The Developed World's Arguement
Copenhagen Summit● Climate conference held
between developing countries and developed countries to cut down carbon emissions from their economies
● China and India has agreed to the proposed actions from the developed world
● China and India will start their decrease from their 2005 Carbon emission value, unlike 1990 for everyone else
● Not legally binding
JAPAN -25%
UNITED STATES
-17% from 2005 level-4% from 1990 level
RUSSIA -20% to -25%
EUROPEAN UNION
-20% to -30%
SOUTH AFRICA
-18%
CANADA +4%
CHINA -40% to -45% from 2005 level
INDIA -20% to -25% from 2005 level
Proposed Emission Cuts by 2020
What are the leaders doing?
● In 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao revealed China's first national economic plan for climate change in an attempt to decrease their GHG emissions by 20% by 2010.
● However leaders are sill building coal powered factories ● In 2008, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that
he wouldn't consider any restrictions on carbon emmisions.● Despite this, in 2009, Prime Minister Singh said that India
was doing enough to combat their climate issues, and he said that they need to walk an "environmentally friendly" road, with "environmentally friendly" technologies.
Our expectations of their actions
● It was expected that both countries will not cut their emissions because both countries believe it is unfair to have developing countries to not use as much energy as the West.
● Since the Copenhagen meeting, both China and India decided to cut their carbon emissions and report their global warming pollution emissions every 2 years.
● Yet, people still believe that China and India will not keep their word until the Unites States and other European countries also cut down their emissions.
What is expected to happen in China and India if nothing is changed?
