David Power OMI – Rest in PeacE Anthony Kain

One of my professors when I studied in Washington DC in the 1970s died this last week. For half my life time he was a great source of wisdom and friendship for me. He wrote about his last illness and I’d like to share something of this with you. I’ll continue it when I next write for the bulletin.

On Being Laid Low - David Power, OMI

Since it is known by a number of people that I had surgery, and that I am now

receiving chemotherapy, I wanted to share some thoughts on living illness, even

what could turn out to be life-threatening. Others have suffered more and have

deeper insights into the spirituality of living an illness or of being old, but they

do not articulate it. If these pages say something, it may invite an online

response from others which gives more wisdom and would make our retirement

houses a more integral part of life.

Some lines from the poetry of Mary Oliver I found very comforting during

the days of surgery and its aftermath, when I had been warned that 10% of

patients do not survive the process and that the risk is higher for the elderly. In

one poem entitled “When Death Comes,” she writes:

When it is over, I don’t want to wonder/ if I have made of my life something

particular and real.

I don’t want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument./ I don’t

want to end up simply having visited this world.

In the poem “In Blackwater Woods”, we find the lines: To live in this world

you must be able/ to do three things:/to love what is mortal;/to hold it/ against

your bones knowing/ your own life depends on it;/ and, when the time comes to

let it go,/ to let go.

I would like personally to live longer, to love the earth and to find life with

fellow mortals, but if it is not to be, it is not to be.

At Providence Hospital I received caring and personal treatment from

doctors, nurses, aides, and cleaning staff and gained new insight into the

medical profession lived as a vocation to the care of others. When anointed by

the provincial with others present, I knew the meaning of celebrating the

sacrament of the sick with and in community. Before I went to the theatre,

though it was not possible to receive communion I was intensely aware of

Christ’s presence and of the gift of life we receive through him.

Please remember in your prayers ..

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A)-Rite of Acceptance

Within our parish, we have a young

woman, Winnie Nguyen, who has chosen

t o p r o g r e s s t o t h e

Catechumenate stage of the

parish R.C.I.A. process. The

Catechumenate is a period of

listening and reflecting on the

Word of God, and intensive learning about

our Catholic faith, its teachings and

doctrines. It is a time of formation and

openness to conversion of the

Catechumen’s life. At the 10.30am Mass

this weekend, there will be a Rite of

Acceptance when Winnie will be accepted

as a member of our parish community

whilst she completes her Catechumenate.

Winnie joins another Catechumen, Susan

Zhao in meeting weekly with the parish

R.C.I.A team in their process of

discernment of their perceived call to the

Catholic faith. This is a sacred time for

Winnie and Susan, as it is also for our

whole parish community because we are

called to support them on their journey,

especially in prayer. All of us are pilgrims

on our faith journey to God. Winnie and

Susan remind us of this in the most

profound and inspiring way. Let us keep

them in our prayers continually as they

journey to the sacraments of initiation,

baptism, confirmation and Holy

Communion later in the year.

Remember this…

If we pray, we will believe; If we believe, we will love; If we love, we will serve.

Sometimes, in Christian life, it is not
