MODERN MARVELSMAKE FOR CELEBRATORY 1924 AUBURN CHRISTMAS

The Jazz Age was in full swing in Auburn,

with the heady days of 1924 promisingnothing but good times and the chance

to celebrate a joyous Christmas round the

    newfangled radio.

We can safely say that the window displays are

more striking in Auburn this year than they have ever

been before, the Journal states in an article Auburn

    Merchants Prepare for Christmas.

The displays point to pride in living in such and

up-to-the-minute community and pride that they can

play a part in its up-building by making such displays

    possible.

Readers were asked to Make this a radio Xmas

with a Gilllan Neutrodyne radio. The price: $216.85.Pages of copy were devoted to the new technological

marvel, with listings for programs and ads from sever-

al local sellers for a variety of radios.

The pre-Christmas celebrations in Auburn were

bolstered by the Grass Valley Miners Glee club at the

    Opera House.

Ebony and Crystal, a book of poems by Clark

Ashton Smith was available for the holiday season

at a reduced price of $1.50. Regarded highly for hispoetry, Smith would later gain fame as a pioneering

    fantasy writer.

The fourth annual Christmas dinner and dance of

the Drum Division of Pacic Gas and Electric was held

at Masonic Hall with a record attendance of about400 members that included families and all theyoungsters. A turkey dinner was served, followed by

    dancing.

Under the headline Auburn man jailed for carry-

ing booze, the Journal reported that a farmer was

arrested twice within 24 hours for carrying a quart of

jackass brandy, a violation of the Wright Act.

Auburns Smith Brothers cigar and magazine store

was ready with some surere recommendations for ajoyful Christmas: Give him a box of his favorite cigarsor cigarettes wrapped in attractive holiday packages.

Give her a year subscription to her favorite maga-

    zine.

Malcolms Pay and Tote Grocery in Auburn was sell-

ing bacon at 32 cents a pound and ham at 27 cents a

pound. The Sugar Plum in the Hink Block had Whit-

mans Chocolates, Glace Fruit and tree decorations

ready for pre-Christmas sales. Cohens was selling

sheep-lined coats for $13.85 and William G. LeeCo billing itself as Santa Claus headquarters was

advertising silk hose for as low as $1. Four-in-hand orsnappy bow ties were offered starting at 50 cents.

The Clampers were back in business in Auburn

after several decades absence. E. Clampus Vitus

Wood Dry Diggings chapter was installed by the

Auburns families were celebrating around the Christmastree in 1924 like this couple and young daughter. Thecouple writer F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Fitzgerald epitomized the Jazz Age. Courtesy Photo

grand captain of the state organization, with its rstgrand humbug identied as Earl Crabbe. Today, hes remembered as one of Placer Highs legendary

coaches and his name is on the gymnasium. In a

link to the past, the installation featured a Yuba City

member of the original Clampers organization, who

had reminiscences of the initiation of Lord SholtoDouglas , the actor. The Auburn-area chapter is now

    named for Douglas.

Placer County was covered in 1924 with orchards

between Roseville and Colfax, with fruit packing andshipping a huge part of the economy and employ-

ment base. The Journal reported that the major

shipping points in Newcastle, Auburn, Penryn andLoomis shipped out a combined total of 3,630 railcars of fruit. That was down from a record breaking

4,853 rail cars shipped out in 1923.

Auburns 1934 Christmas full of warmth, caring

    CHRISTMAS 1934

By Gus Thomson | Of the Auburn Journal

    DEPRESSION ERA

    D

espite the dark cloud of the Depression hanging over Placer

County, Auburn businesses reported enjoying their best Christ-

    mas business in four years.

More business was transacted in Auburn on Monday than in any

single day in the history of the city, the Journal reported. The

last day of Christmas buying proved a climax to a most successful year.

There was plenty to celebrate amid stretched economic times, with a height-

ened appreciation of simple things like a local birth.

Prominent Auburn businessman Fred Husse was presented with about the

nest gift on Christmas, the Journal trumpeted, When a son arrived in the

Husse household the day before Christmas.

Homespun shows of kindness were many. The American Legion Auburn unitauxiliary donated 100 jars of homemade jelly to the Auburn Red Cross chap-

ter, with the intent of distributing the jars to needy families with children.

The State Theatre was a magnet. More than 1,500 children of grammar school

age and younger took part in the Free Christmas Party at the Lincoln Way

venue, a popular tradition that would last for decades in Auburn.

For many of the children, it was their rst show of the year and upon arrival

at the theatre and as they left, many stopped to tell those at the door how

thankful they were, the Journal reported.

And there was more than a movie. The Auburn Grammar School glee club

    entertained with Christmas carols.

Max Strasbergs The Army Store at 812 Lincoln Way was open every evening

This photo from the 1930s shows a store display of toys that children ofthat time period would have been putting on their list for Santa to comedown the chimney with and adult collectors of a more modern vintagewould pay dearly for.

More work relief projects were approved just in time for Christmas, including

road reconstruction north of Auburn. Fifty people were expected to nd jobs.

School grounds improvement at Auburn High School, including building side-

walks and steps, were also approved. Eight people would nd work.

In Penryn, residents and people passing through enjoyed the illuminated

Christmas tree, which for the past few seasons was located between the Ma-

sonic Temple and Fruit House Row.

Placer High Schools Hillmen basketball team played a match two days before

Christmas against the Stanford freshman team that starred a player identied

only as Luissetti. He scored 15 points in front of the largest crowd of the sea -

son. The Hillmen lost 36 to 18 for their rst defeat since December 1933.

Luissetti was actually Hank Luisetti, developer of the one-handed running shot

in an era of two-handed set shooters. Luisetti would go on to become one of

the most dominant college players of all time, the rst to score 50 points in a

game and the second greatest player of the mid-20th century.

That boy Luisetti is the best forward the Hillmen have ever run up against,

the Journals Sport Dope columnist said.

EAT LIGHTER, SMARTER DURING THE HOLIDAYS

    Ashley Pechin

By Ashlie Pechin | For the Journal

For many people theholidays are lled withstress, crazy schedules

and an abundance of foodrather than love, kindnessand joyful spirit. This can

reak havoc on your healthand tness, not to mentionyour waistline. This is prob-ably why most New Yearsresolutions are somethingalong the lines of startdiet or start exercising. This year, instead of waitinguntil after the holidays totry out a healthy lifestyle,

hy not start before theholidays arrive? Not only

ill your body and mindbe able to deal with stress

better, but you will be ableto actually enjoy the holi-days and all they are about.Dont worry - it doesnthave to be extreme. Hereare some of my top tipsfor a healthy and happyholiday season:

Start an exercise routinenow. It doesnt have to be

anything too demandingor time consuming. Startwalking a few days a weekand build up from there asyou are able. The importantthing is to be consistentwith it. Schedule it into yourcalendar and use it as atime for you to have all toyourself.

Get plenty of sleep. Lackof sleep takes its toll on thebody. Not only can it putyou at risk for heart disease, high blood pressure anddiabetes, it can also causeweight gain. When youarent getting enoughsleep the hormones thatmake you feel hungry and

increase your cravings forhigh-fat and high-carbo-hydrate foods have a eldday.

Enjoy your favorite treats in moderation. Insteadof starving yourself all dayso you can feel less guiltyabout enjoying a large

holiday feast which cancause you to overeat later, eat small healthy mealsthroughout the day. Startwith a healthy breakfast likescrambled egg whites withyour favorite vegetables. Then pick a lean proteinand lower glycemic carbo-hydrate for a small lunch orsnack to keep your bloodsugar steady and help youfeel fuller longer. Some-thing like grilled chickenbreast with lentils or carrotsdipped in hummus.

Remember portioncontrol. When you sit downto your holiday feast, keepyour portions in mind. The

last thing you want to dois pile everything on yourplate and stuff yourself try-ing to eat it all. Take a littlebit of your favorites anddo your best to stick withone helping. If you are stillhungry, go for more veg-etables and lean protein. Also, using a smaller plate

is a great way to keep yourportions in line.

Go easy on the gravy andsauces. These are usuallyfull of added calories andsodium that we often dontthink twice about.

Sip wisely. If you like toenjoy a festive adult bever-age try to stick with wine, light beer or champagne. Ifyou prefer hard alcohol likevodka, whiskey, rum, or gin, leave the mix-ins out. Thiswill save you unwanted cal-ories and excess sugar. Youcould also mix carbonatedwater with a splash of 100percent fruit juice to enjoy a

festive non-alcoholic drink. Be picky. If you dontabsolutely love cranberrysauce or your mother-in-laws cookies, you donthave to eat them justbecause they are sitting onthe table.

    Give your favorite dishes

a make-over. There arealways ways to make yourfavorite foods a little health-ier. Using less butter, creamand sugar is a great way tostart. Also, bringing yourown healthier side dish to aholiday gathering ensuresthat you know what youare eating rather than storebought goodies loadedwith unknown ingredients.

Keep the focus on whatthe holidays are reallyabout rather than just onthe food. Connect withfamily and friends you

havent seen for a while andenjoy their company.

My most important tip ofall is to cut yourself someslack. If you do happen toover-indulge a little or skipa scheduled workout it isnt

the end of the world. Thereis always another meal, an-other workout, and anotherday. Take a deep breathand enjoy this holidayseason!

    HEALTHY ROAST FOR THE HOLIDAYS?

WITH PORK, EASILYHEALTHY ROAST FOR THE HOLIDAYS?

BC-US--Food-Healthy-Pork Roast/608Eds: The Healthy Plate helps home cooks discover the healthier side of everyday ingredients. It runsevery week. With AP Photos.

    MELISSA DARABIANAssociated Press

Winter calls for savory roasts that ll our homes with lus-cious aromas that promise a comforting meal to bring thefamily together. The problem for the healthy eater is that

most roasts get their avor from silky (and so very saturat-ed) fat marbling. Yes, we can roast chickens and turkeys, but sometimes we crave thick slices of pork or beef.

I have a solution: the pork tenderloin (not to be confusedith a simple pork loin). As the name suggests, this is

one of the most tender cuts of pork, making it perfect forroasted slice-and-serve bliss.

The pork tenderloin is a small roast (about 1 to 2 poundsper roast), which also means it cooks quickly, adding to its

eekday convenience. As a bonus, the pork tenderloin isincredibly low in fat, making it comparable to a boneless, skinless chicken breast. A 4-ounce serving of pork ten-derloin offers up over 20 grams of protein and less than 3grams of fat! Thats the good news.

The bad news is that this lowered fat can make the ten-derloin extremely mild in avor (read as bland) and proneto overcooking (read as dry). But I have solutions for bothof these problems, and as long as you follow my two tipsyou will be on your way to mastering this healthy comfortmeal.

First, let the roast sit in a dry or wet rub in the refrigerator

for a day or two. Two days in a mustard and herb mixtureorks magic on the tenderloins avor! Try my 48-hour

mustard-marinated pork tenderloin roast as proof.Second, dont overcook the roast. Many of us grew upthinking pork should been cooked until the pink is gone.Nope!

Bring the pink back! A light shade of pink says that theroast is cooked, but still juicy. Aim for an internal tempera-ture of 150 F, then allow the roast to rest for 5 to 10 min -utes. The result will be a perfectly-cooked and avorfulroast worthy of company and a holiday meal.

Start to fnish: 35 minutes, plus marinating

    Servings: 6

    1/4 cup Dijon mustard

    2 teaspoons grated orange zest

    1 teaspoon sweet paprika

    1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme

In a small bowl, whisk together the mustard, orangezest, paprika, thyme, rosemary, cumin, olive oil, saltand pepper. Rub into the esh of both pork ten-derloins. Place the tenderloins in a large zip-close

    1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary

    1/4 teaspoon ground cumin

    1 tablespoon olive oil

    1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

    1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

2 pork tenderloin roasts (about 1 1/2 pounds each)

    MUSTARD-MARINATED PORK TENDERLOIN ROAST

MIX IT UP plastic bag, pressing to remove excess air beforeclosing. Refrigerate for 48 hours. When ready to cook, heat the oven to 400 F. Let thetenderloin rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, arrange the roasts on a rack set

HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING? Start with a box of crackers

BC-US--Food-Deadline-Holiday Appetizers/478Eds: Cooking on Deadline features fast, week-night-friendly meals that are big on avor, but noton labor. It runs every week. With AP

Thats the generic namefor Triscuits, those kind-of-

eirdly-woven-esque wheatcrackers that are delight-fully salty-crunchy-savory.This year, Ive decided they

are the perfect on-demandbase on which to build anynumber of crowd-pleasingholiday appetizers at thelast minute. Because noneof us has time for elaborateapps.

It works kind of like this.Line a baking sheet withfoil. Coat the foil withcooking spray. Cover the

tray with woven wheatcrackers. Top the crackers

ith delicious stuff. Bake at400 F for about 10 minutes.Serve. Done.

It really is that easy. Ivetopped the crackers withslices of cheddar and ananchovy. Ive topped them

with Parmesan and straw-berry jam. Ive topped themwith fresh goat cheese,a dried apricot and freshchives. Ive topped themwith slices of salami, sun-

dried tomato and man-chego cheese. Ive toppedthem with brie and g jamand a hunk of ham. You getthe idea.

The lesson is simply thatso long as you keep a boxor two of crackers on handduring the holidays, itseasy to scramble a platterof appetizers in minutes,

pretty much no matter whatelse you have on hand. Tohelp get you rolling, here isa simple recipe for my fa-vorite variant of this holidayentertaining appetizer. Butyou really should take it inany direction that inspiresyou.

    MIX IT UP!

Heat the oven to 400 F.Line a rimmed baking sheetwith foil.

Use a paring knife to cutopen the dates, remove

    TRISCUITS WITH

    DATES AND

    BACON

    Start to nish: 15 minutes

    Makes 16 appetizers16 dates, pitted

3 ounces manchegocheese, cut into wedges(each about the size ofhalf a date)

    16 Triscuit crackers

8 slices bacon, each cutin half crosswise

    Ground black pepper

the pit (if necessary), thenwedge a chunk of cheeseinto each. Set each date ona cracker, then wrap half aslice of bacon around theentire thing, overlapping

the ends of the baconon the underside of thecracker.

Arrange the assembledcrackers on the preparedbaking sheet. Sprinkle withpepper, then bake for 10to 15 minutes, or until thecheese is melted and thebacon is starting to crisp.Cool slightly before serving.

In my big Italian family, my Grandpa Duncan gotblessed with many daughters and granddaughters,

but no sons or grandsons. He has four daughters:My mother Heather, my Aunt Hilary, Aunt Erin andAunt Megan; and three granddaughters: my sisterDarian, my cousin Sequoia and me. He doesnt reallymind it at all actually. In fact, he kind of loves it, butstill, it would be nice to have at least one grandson.

On Christmas day of 2005, everything was theexact same, just like every year, and there were asmall amount of surprises. We always had a hamdinner, watch A Christmas Story and open up

presents while sipping on peppermint hot cocoa. After all of our typical festivities, Aunt Erin had anannouncement to make. We were intrigued becauseust last Christmas she had told us that she wasengaged to my hilarious Uncle Kevin. When shestood up, everyone gave her their full attention.

What I wanted to tell you all is that Kevin and

I are expecting a baby boy in ve months, Erinannounced.

Everybody screamed of happiness and Im prettysure I saw my very tough Grandpa shed a tear.Family after family member engulfed Uncle Kevinand Erin with big hugs and congratulations. Finally,a baby boy! A little cousin to play with and watchgrow over the years!

Itd be different though, since hell be the only boyfor about four entire years until Erin makes the sameannouncement on Christmas day of 2009. Nolan will

be a big brother to another baby boy! The patternhas been broken!

As of 2014, Nolan is now eight years old, and Carsonis four years old. My two little cousins are the bestChristmas presents that I have ever had.

Iremember the Christmas of 2013 with a clearrecollection. In retrospect, it was a cold Christmas,

below freezing. My horses would prance in thecollecting frost and my cats would experiment withits freezing touch. The mud in the pasture would befrozen into odd shapes overnight caused by horsesrunning for their feed the evening before. Even thetrees were crystallized in this cold weather. Despitethe chilliness, the breeze the night of 24th broughtthe anticipation of Christmas to my doorstep.

The lights on the Christmas tree were ablaze, andthe smell of hot chocolate wafted through the air.

My family and I were enjoying a Christmas tradition, watching Lord of the Rings, when my eyeswandered over to the glittering presents under thetree. Curiosity pricked at my conscious as I noticed avery large present. My attention was soon snappedback to the movie when I noticed my mother smilingsmugly at me. I smiled back and let my excitement

boil collectively in my stomach over the course ofthe night. Before I knew it, I was lying in bed wideawake. Soon sleep overpowered my anticipation, and I closed my eyes.

Dawn had passed when I started ripping openpresents. All the gifts were soon revealed when onlyone remained; the large one I was eyeing earlier. Itore it open carefully, and once open, I caught mybreath. A beautiful, camouaged Savage 22-caliberrie was lying on the oor in front of me.

The very next weekend, my father and I were

shooting steel with that tiny rie. Smiles were sharedand happiness ourished because of that gun. Notonly did the rie make me grin, but it taught me howto shoot accurately. So, in conclusion, the memory oflast years Christmas had to be my favorite.

    ~ Claire Ross

Icant pick out one specic favorite memory out ofall the magical Christmas experiences Ive had, so

I will tell you about a few of my favorite Christmastraditions.

At Christmas time I enjoy the little things, likewhen my mom and I make our favorite peppermintcookies together; or on Christmas Eve when eachmember of my family gets a new pair of pajamas towear that night and on Christmas Day.

Another one of my favorite traditions is taking awarm cup of hot cocoa and driving around our

neighborhood to enjoy all of the beautiful lights; ormaking a little box of goodies to send to a child thatmay not receive any gifts on Christmas morning.

On Christmas Eve, while everyone may be tuckedup in bed, my little brother and I will tip-toe out totake a peek at the presents under the tree. We will

SO MANY THINGS I LOVE ABOUT CHRISTMAS

    TO GRANDMOTHERS HOUSE WE WENT

squeal with delight when we notice that Santa hasvisited and eaten the cookies we set out for him. OnChristmas morning, while everyone is dying to opentheir gifts (dont get me wrong I am too), rst itsnice to enjoy breakfast with my family while watchinga Christmas lm.

Im sorry this wasnt just one amazing memory, butI thought it would be nice to share a few of myfavorite little Christmas traditions.

    for 13 Years!

Every year on Christmas Eve, all of my moms side ofthe family gathers at my grandmas house and weopen presents, have a big dinner and talk. That year

all of the girls came to help cook and bake with ourgrandma the day before. We made cookies, cakes, agingerbread house and a bunch of different sweets. We had so much fun laughing and baking and I

remember the house smelt so good afterwards. We then decorated the Christmas tree. We hadso much fun and its one of my favorite Christmasmemories!

    ~ Samantha Fagundes

y best Christmas memory was when I was

9 years old. This is my most memorableChristmas because I got my laptop this year. I hadbeen asking for a laptop for a couple years. I wasso excited when I realized what it was. I no sooneropened the box than I asked my dad to program it.For the rst two months after I got my laptop I wason it every day.

After this Christmas my family and I moved toWashington. After I packed up my laptop I kindof forgot about it. But overall this was my most

    memorable Christmas.~ Emily Osborne

My Favorite Christmas memory is when my momand I used to make sugar cookies and I would

go bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Bell ringingis when you go to supermarket centers and raisemoney for the homeless.

I remember how two days before we would bell-ringmy mom would be up late making the dough then

the next day all we would do is make cookies. Aftera long day of making cookies we would relax andthe next day we would go bell ringing.

In the morning we would make icing and collectall of the sprinkles we own. We meet our friends atthe Savemart Center, all of us wrapped with warmclothes and Santa hats, and we would start areshifts. With around an hour at each store each familyrotated through. I remember starting at SaveMartthen going to what is now McCaulous, and after we

all met at Round Table Pizza.

Once we were there, we started to frost cookies anddecorate them. It was always so much fun. One yearI remember how that day my brother and dad wentand got me a Webkinz - which I was obsessed withat the time that they gave to me for Christmas.Just hearing that they had got it for me that daymade it that much more special.

Bell ringing made me feel good, like I was giving

back for all that I have and would receive.~ Abi Jones
