1. INTRODUCTION TO GHANA (VOICE OVER)

The Republic of Ghana, in West Africa, is bordered

by Cote dIvoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the

north, Togo to the east and the Gulf of Guinea to the

South.

Ghana has a population of about 24million people;

and is divided into ten (10) administrative regions:

Ghana is a middle income economy, well endowed

with natural resources. Exports include: Gold, Cocoa,Timber, Electricity, Diamond, Bauxite, Manganese and

Oil,

Legal system based on British common law,

customary (traditional) law and the 1992 constitution.

Ghanas political and economic stability, low crime

rate and wide use of English make the country an

attractive entry point to West Africa for foreigners.

Official language is English; however, mostGhanaians also speak at least one local language.

Ghana is home to over 100 different ethnic groups;

the most popular of which are Akan (49.3%), Ewe

(11.7%),Ga-Dangme (7.3%) and Guan (4%).

Religious divisions are Christian (68.8%), Muslim

(15.9%), Traditional African Religion (8.5%) and Other

(6.80%).

Ghanaian culture is a mixture of all its ethnic groups;

and this is most evident in Ghanaian cuisine, art and

clothing.

The celebration of festivals is an essential part of

Ghanaian culture; as well as rites of passage such aschild birth, puberty, marriage and death.

Textiles are very important in Ghanaian culture; and

the hand-woven Ashanti ceremonial cloth, Kente, is

probably the most famous of all Ghanaian cloths.

Football is the most popular sport. In the 2010 FIFA

World Cup the Ghana Black Stars became the third

African country to reach the quarter final stage of the

World Cup:

Ghana has produced a few quality boxers such asAzumah Nelson and Nana Yaw Konadu; both of them three

time world champions.

The music of Ghana is diverse. The most well known

music genres to have originated from Ghana are Afro-jazz (created by Kofi Ghanaba), Highlife and the new

genre of music created by the youth in the 1990s

known as Hiplife (a combination of highlife, dancehall

and hip pop).

Ghanaian dance is as diverse as its music; and each
