Reliable HardwareReliable and proven hardware is the cornerstone to our success.

The founders of GEO PSI have been manufacturing and

installing downhole instrumentation for more than 20 years. Our

downhole sensors, instrumentation cables, cable protectors,

and surface electronics are designed, manufactured, quality

controlled and tested to withstand the test of time in challenging

wellbore conditions including: deep horizontal completions,

offshore jack-up rigs, high temperature, and aggressive artificial

lift deployments. That is why our corporate trademark is

RELIABILITY – JOB 1™.

KnowledgeWe know what we are talking about. The entire senior

management group has field experience and technical expertise.

We understand completions and are capable of providing expert

advice on how to successfully deploy various types of downhole

Purchase Guide

DeliverabilityEveryone wants a supplier that they can

count on. Many companies focus on running

lean or just in time inventory systems which

may be practical for many manufactured

products. GEO PSI has taken a completely

opposite approach, by being heavily invested

in finished goods inventory and a scalable

manufacturing process. We know the oil

patch. Our customers need us to provide

equipment for opportunities with short

notice and they need a company that can

fulfill the requirements of large tenders. It’s

not unusual for us to have several hundred

downhole sensors, 200,000+ feet of

instrumentation cable, and more than 5,000

cable protectors in stock. In 2014, GEO PSI

has manufactured more than 1,300 downhole

sensors and 2.1 million feet of downhole

instrumentation cable.

Customer ServiceWe understand your needs! Our manufacturing facility is staffed 7 days a week. There is always

someone on call to provide support and help when you need it.

InnovationGEO PSI invests heavily into research and development. Our engineering team has

brought forward several ideas that have improved downhole instrumentation reliability

and functionality. Some of them include:

» Easy Connect™ Cablehead System. The cablehead is a mechanical component

that connects the downhole gauge to the instrumentation cable. It has long

been the weak point and commonly known as the leading cause of system

failures. The engineers at GEO PSI have developed a patent pending cablehead

that simplifies makeup in the field and greatly reduces system failures.

» 0.160” Instrumentation Cable. GEO PSI invented a stainless steel downhole assembly

instrumentation cable with a 0.160” diameter with a wall thickness greater than most

0.25” cables. The unique form is excellent for suspended application and permits

exiting the wellbore out of a casing wing valve, saving the customer both time and

money. In addition, when encapsulated with plastic bumper material, the 0.160”

offers superior crush resistance, compared to most formats of 0.25” cable.

» Artificial Lift Gauge Mounting System. Many downhole instrumentation companies

struggle to successfully instrument high horsepower ESP and PC Pump systems.

GEO PSI has developed a simple and cost effective gauge carrier that absorbs

the vibration and shock, reducing the chance of premature system failure. The

GEO PSI gauge carrier is a non-welded design, ensuring that there is no

electrolysis which may cause premature holes in the production tubing.

Bubble Tube Pressure Collection Theory

The primary advantages of bubble tube pressure collection systems are system reliability and cost-effectivenessThe concept is very simple. An automated system controls pressurized inert gas such as nitrogen or helium, which

is injected down a capillary tube into a pressure chamber or fluid into the wellbore causing a purge. An automated

solenoid valve is then closed. The reservoir pressure fights back, compressing the inert gas column in the capillary

tube. A high-end piezo-resistive transducer measures the compressed pressure at surface and the GEO PSI logger

makes an accurate downhole calculation of the reservoir pressure.

CHAMBER CONDITION PRIOR TO PURGE

GEO PSI actively installs bubble tube systems in the Canadian steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) environment

with a 100% success track record (as of July 2006).

AFTER THE GAS HAS EQUALIZED WITH THE BHP, GAS INJECTION IS STOPPED.

Bubble tube systems are very low maintenance. GEO

PSI engineers each solution so that the inert gas

supply only needs recharging every 1 to 3 months.

In some cases, supplied natural gas can be substituted

for nitrogen or helium.

Although bubble tube technology has been used for

BHP calculations for more than 75 years, its overall

reliability and cost-effectiveness has kept it relevant

to this day. Currently, bubble tube technology is

commonly deployed in SAGD, high-temperature

offshore fields in Southeast Asia, geo-thermal energy

completions, and enhanced oil recovery systems using

steam floods across the world.

The Future is Real Time™

GEOPSI.com

GEO PSI goes above and beyond the status

quo to engineer innovative products that deliver

reliabiabily and highly durable instumentation to

our customers. This is accomplished by placing

a considerable portion of our R&D budget and

engineering time towards high-temperature

downhold instrumentation solutions.

A distinct advantage that GEO PSI has over our

competition is that we manufacture our own

downhole instrumentation cable, commonly

referred to as tubular encapsualted cable

(TEC). TEC is the most common package for

downhole instrumentation and is manufactured

by a cold-formed tube mill.

The TEC manufacturing process begins with

a stainless steel strip, which is continuously

formed into a tube through a progressive

series of rollers. The thermocouple conductors

are injected into the tube. After welding, the

tube is further reduced until it reaches the

final diameter. Product quality is automatically

and manually monitored during the entire

manufacturing process.

Using Thermocouples for Downhole Temperature Measurement

The Future is Real Time™

GEOPSI.com

Breakthrough—Improved Reliability for Downhole ThermocouplesGEO PSI has developed an exclusive manufacturing

process that has greatly increased thermocouple

reliability for use in downhole SAGD applications. This

has been accomplished by strategically eliminating the

weak points of conventional thermocouple systems.

Thermocouples are extremely sensitive to corrosion, and

it’s extremely difficult to consistently make corrosion-

proof joints. Most downhole thermocouple systems rely

on silver brazing to attach thermocouples to a stainless

steel instrumentation line.

GEO PSI has invented a manufacturing process

that hermetically seals thermocouples inside the

instrumentation line, effectively protecting them from

oxidation and other forms of contamination.

Redundancy. GEO PSI installs a redundant

thermocouple at each measurement point. This

is beneficial for result verification. Alternatively,

thermocouple sensors can be spaced apart inside

the same cable for measuring temperature at different

well depths.

Pump-Down System Advantage. Because GEO PSI’s

thermocouples are not externally attached, there is no

change to the outside diameter of the instrumentation

cable. This is beneficial when deploying pump-down

bundles in coiled tubing deployments because more

measurement points can fit in smaller-diameter coiled

tubing strings.

Filler/Safe-Handling Section. Thermocouples are

typically installed in bundles or attached to strength

membrane for pump-down purposes. To avoid damage

from handling or banding, GEO PSI has developed a

1–2 m (4–6 ft) safe handling section at the end of our

instrumentation cable, greatly reducing wear and tear

while pulling instrumentation bundles through

coiled tubing.

Mineral Insulated Cable Assembly (MICA)-Free

Cables. While MICA insulation offers excellent

temperature ratings, it is susceptible to moisture

wicking and can be difficult to use in the field, especially

when creating reliable surface terminations. Excessive

humidity can lead to sensor failures, and MICA insulation

is difficult to strip and terminate. GEO PSI thermocouple

systems use a special form of perflouorokoxy (PFA) as

insulation, which has a safe operating temperature of

nearly 300°C/572°F. It’s extremely easy to work with in

the field. No soft leads are required at the termination,

making our solution more cost-effective and quicker

to deploy.

Improved Tensile Strength and Crush Resistance.

GEO PSI downhole thermocouples have an outside

diameter of 4 mm (0.160”) with a wall thickness of

0.762 mm (0.030”). Other downhole thermocouples

have an outside diameter of 3.175 mm (0.125”) with only

0.584 mm (0.023”) wall thickness. GEO PSI cables have

the advantage of greater tensile strength and

crush resistance.

Downhole Thermocouple Success 300°C/572°F

Splice-Free DesignGEO PSI thermocouple cables can be manufactured up to 5,000 m / 16,404 ft in length

PRODUCT SUMMARYType K thermocouple sensors provide the most robust and reliable solution for

temperature measurement in high-temperature reservoirs. Compared to fiber optic

solutions, thermocouples are more cost-effective—and they do not suffer the effect of

hydrogen darkening.

285°C (545°F) Type K Thermocouples

Using Thermocouples for Downhole Temperature MeasurementBREAKTHROUGH—IMPROVED RELIABILITY FOR DOWNHOLE THERMOCOUPLESGEO PSI takes pride in being a dynamic, innovative company. We

never accept the status quo. A considerable portion of our R&D budget

and engineering time is targeted towards developing innovative high-

temperature downhole instrumentation cable solutions.

We have developed an exclusive manufacturing process that has greatly

increased the reliability of thermocouples for use in downhole steam-

assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), enhanced oil recovery (EOR), geothermal,

and other high-temperature applications by eliminating many of the weak

points of conventional thermocouple systems.

Tubular encapsulated cable (TEC) is the preferred package for downhole

instrumentation, including thermocouples, and is manufactured by a cold-

forming tube mill.

The manufacturing process begins with stainless steel strip that is

continuously formed into a tube through a progressive series of rollers. The

thermocouple conductors are injected into the tube just before the tube is

welded together using tungsten inert gas welding. After the weld, the tube

is reduced again until it reaches the

final diameter.

Product quality is automatically

and manually monitored during the

entire manufacturing process. The

tube’s welded seam is monitored

by an eddy current tester, and the

diameter of the finished product is

measured and recorded by a 3D

profilometer. Every cable is

manually inspected before customer

shipment.

285°C (545°F) Type K Thermocouples

How Do We Make a Better Downhole Thermocouple Cable?Thermocouples are extremely sensitive to corrosion.

Most downhole thermocouple systems rely on silver

brazing to attach thermocouples to a stainless

steel instrumentation line. It’s extremely difficult to

consistently make corrosion-proof joints.

GEO PSI has invented a manufacturing process

at our tube mill manufacturing facility in Calgary,

Canada that results in the thermocouples being

hermetically sealed inside the instrumentation line,

which protects them from oxidation and other forms

of contamination.

Redundancy and Distributed Spacing. GEO PSI can

install a redundant thermocouple sensor at each

measurement point. This is beneficial for backup

purposes and result verification. Alternatively,

thermocouples can be spaced apart for distributed

temperature measurement.

Pump Down System Advantage. Because GEO PSI’s

thermocouples are not externally attached, there is no

change to the outside diameter of the instrumentation

cable. This is convenient when deploying pump down

bundles in coiled tubing deployments. We can fit more

measurement points in smaller-diameter, coiled

tubing strings.

Filler/Safe-Handling Section. Thermocouples are

typically installed in bundles or attached to strength

membrane for pump down purposes. To avoid damage

from handling or banding, GEO PSI has developed a

1- to 2-m or 4- to 6-ft safe handling section at the end of

our instrumentation cable, greatly reducing any wear or

tear while pulling instrumentation bundles through

coiled tubing.

MICA-Free Cables. While MICA insulation offers

excellent temperature ratings, it is susceptible to

moisture wicking and can be difficult to use in the field,

especially when creating reliable surface terminations.

Excess humidity can lead to sensor failures, and

MICA insulation is difficult to strip and terminate. In

addition, poor brazing technique on MICA cables cause

attenuation, resulting in early failures or inaccurate

temperature readings.

GEO PSI thermocouple systems use a special form of

perflouorokoxy (PFA) as insulation, which has a safe

operating temperature of nearly °C. It’s extremely easy

to work with in the field. No soft leads are required at the

termination, making our solution more cost-effective and

quicker to deploy.

Improved Tensile Strength and Crush Resistance. Our

thermocouple cable sheath is slightly larger than

3.175 mm (0.125”). Our 4.064 mm cable (0.160”) is

based on Slickline sizing, and our stainless steel wall

thickness is 0.762 mm (0.030”), compared to 0.584 mm

(0.023”). And, our tensile operating strength and crush

resistance is more than 50% better than 3.175 mm

(0.125”) downhole instrumentation lines.

Thermocouple measurement points can be redundant or spaced apart inside the same TEC.

Ideal Applications• SAGD

• EOR

• Geothermal

• Coiled tubing deployed instrumentation

BEWARE OF IMITATORSMany knock clamps are tack

welded, but GEO PSI’s clamps

are spot welded.

Difference Between Spot Welding and Tack Welding

• Tack welding is a preliminary process in any welding project and takes place before spot welding

• Tack welding ensures that parts to be welded finally through spot welding are held securely and properly aligned, spot welding finally joins the parts together.

GEO PSI cable protectors are of the highest quality

ENGINEERED WITH SAFETY IN MINDSafety should never be compromised when exiting

instrumentation cable from the wellbore, especially

in the presence of surface gas pressure. Only a

metal-to-metal sealing system can adequately isolate

stainless steel instrumentation cable from the outside

environment. Furthermore, a high-pressure glass

feed-through, secondary barrier, isolates any pressure

from travelling through the conductor in the event of a

downhole cable breach.

A preventive safety bleed-off is furnished for

authorized operators or technicians servicing the

wellhead.

Flexible Design The wellhead feed-through system is modular and can

be configured to exit through a wellhead NPT port,

casing vent, or designated flow line.

KEY COMPONENTS » Hermetically sealed glass feed-through system
