The wife and I are now 68 and are living on J310 a month, which includes $81 from a mutual fund withdraw- al plan. When I retired, at 65. I owned about 2,000 shares of that mutual fund. I was told that t in order to get the $81 check each month, some of my shares would have to be liquidated. 1 am getting worried, be- cause the number of shares is down" to 1,892 — worth $15,858. Would I be doing the right thing, if I sell all these shares now before the num- ber gets much lower? A. What in the world for? You seem to be worried for no good reason. Although you don't come right out and say so; you are evidently concerned that you might' outlive your invest- ment and that the checks would stop coming in. The way things are going you have mighty little to fret about. In three years only 108 of your shares have been "liquidated" another word for "redeem- ed" or "sold." Meanwhile, the share value of the mutual fund you named In your letter has 1 gone up. Even from the limited infor- mation you supply it is clear that the $15,858 present value of the 1,892 shares you now hold is . higher "than the value of 2,000 shares three, years ago. This is a good record, consider- ing the sharp drop in prices of stocks and mutual funds last year. In "a mutual fund withdrawal plan, the money for a monthly check comes first from = divi- dends paid on shares owned, then from any capital-gains dis- tributions made, then — if necessary from the automatic sale of some shares. It seems pretty clear that you are withdrawing at the an- nual rate of six percent. Since your mutual fund doesn't pay out six percent in dividends (none does) or even dividends plus capital gains, you have- to expect an almost steady liqui- dation of some shares. During 1966, when prices went down, the number of shares redeemed each month increased. Now that the market has re- covered a good part of last year's loss, fewer of your shares need to be redeemed to fill out the monthly checks. So, unless the value of that fund's shares goes into a deep dive and stays down, your risk is low. At 6 per cent you're with- drawing at' what is a sensible rate. Stretch out and enjoy your retirement. •Jfr # -?4> Q. I read a story to the ef- fect that brokerage commis- sion charges can be different on the price of the stock In- volved. I have the following commission schedule from a brokerage firm for round lots of stock. When the amount of money involved is under $100, the commission is as mutually agreed; from $100 to $399, it's 2 per cent plus $3;. $400 to $2,399, 1 per cent plus $7; $2,400 to $4,999, 0.5 per cent plus $19; $5,000 and above, 0.1 per cent plus $39. Calculating with this-sched- ule, I would pay the same commission if I invest $10,000 in any stock, whether it is priced at $10 or $100 a share. Right? A.. Wrong. Along with many other people you overlook the fact that the commission sched- ule is based on the amount of VAITeam AtPhileoV Panel Forum A team of consultants from Value Analysis Inc.- of Sche- nectady recently attended a panel forum on value improve- ment programs presented by. money in each round lot. See, commissions are higher on lower-priced stocks.- Q. I am a newcomer to the market. Will- -you send me a . list of stocks now selling for less than $5 a share that; in your opinion, will become high-flyers and grow in value? A. No. You're new and have lots of things to learn. Number one _ should be to ignore tips about all stocks especially the low-priced items. I don't send out lists or individual re- commendations. If I could come up with a list such as you ask for, I'd give up abusing the typewriter and retire. * -x- -X- (Mr. Doyle will answer only representative letters of general interest in his column. Staub Named GE2-Phase Unit Manager

Fred \V. Staub. 9 \V1ll0w Lane, Scotia, has been appointed manager of.the two-phase processes program at the eneral Electric Research and Development Center. Dr. Paul H. Kydd, manager of .the center's chemical processes branch, has announced. ;

The aim of the two-phase processes program is to advance the understanding of two-phase heat transfer and fluid flow and to assist in the solution of current and future expected operating problems inthis arj?a. Two-phase phenomena taVe place in gas-liquid-solid trans port systems and include processes such as boiling, condensation, and sublimation.

Staub received his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. While attending RPI.he worked with General Electric under the RPI cooperative program with industry. He joined GE in 1953 and has specialized in^studies of .heat transfer and two-phase flow.

At the center Staub designed and constructed a two-phase heat transfer facility, a transpiration cooling facility, and a condensing heat transfer facility. During the latter half of 1966 he was assigned to . the heat transfer group "of the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) Laboratories at Grenoble, France, by the United States Atomic Energy Commission under the U.S.-Euratom joint research and development program.

Q. The wife and I are now 68 and are living on J310 a month, which includes $81 from a mutual fund withdrawal plan. When I retired, at 65. I owned about 2,000 shares of that mutual fund. I was told thatt in order to get the $81 check each month, some of my shares would have to be liquidated.

1 am getting worried, because the number of shares is down" to 1,892 — worth $15,858. Would I be doing the right thing, if I sell all these shares now — before the number gets much lower? A. What in the world for? You

seem to be worried for no good reason. Although you don't come right out and say so; you are evidently concerned that you might' outlive your investment and that the checks would stop coming in.

The way things are going you have mighty little to fret about. In three years only 108 of your shares have been "liquidated" — another word for "redeemed" or "sold." Meanwhile, the share value of the mutual fund you named In your letter has1

gone up. Even from the limited infor

mation you supply it is clear that the $15,858 present value of the 1,892 shares you now hold is . higher "than the value of 2,000 shares three, years ago. This is a good record, considering the sharp drop in prices of stocks and mutual funds last year.

In "a mutual fund withdrawal plan, the money for a monthly check comes first from = dividends paid on shares owned, then from any capital-gains distributions made, then — if necessary — from the automatic sale of some shares.

It seems pretty clear that you are withdrawing at the annual rate of six percent. Since your mutual fund doesn't pay out six percent in dividends (none does) or even dividends plus capital gains, you have- to expect an almost steady liquidation of some shares. During 1966, when prices went down, the number of shares redeemed each month increased.

Now that the market has recovered a good part of last year's loss, fewer of your shares need to be redeemed to fill out the monthly checks. So, unless the value of that fund's shares goes into a deep dive and stays down, your risk is low. At 6 per cent you're withdrawing at' what is a sensible rate. Stretch out and enjoy your retirement.

Q. I read a story to the effect that brokerage commission charges can be different on the price of the stock Involved.

Calculating with this-schedule, I would pay the same commission if I invest $10,000 in any stock, whether it is priced at $10 or $100 a share. Right?

A.. Wrong. Along with many other people you overlook the fact that the commission schedule is based on the amount of

high-flyers and grow in value? A. No. You're new and have

lots of things to learn. Number one _ should be to ignore tips about all stocks — especially the low-priced items. I don't send out lists or individual recommendations. If I could come up with a list such as you ask for, I'd give up abusing the typewriter and retire.

Golubs Attend Institute In Chicago

William Golub, president-of Central Markets Inc., and Bernard Golub, president of Golub Corp., were among participants at the recent meeting of Super Market Institute members in Chicago.

Pointed out at the meeting by Michael J. O'Connor, institute executive director, was that a mass of efficient, scientific tools" has' been created to make, meat service to the consumer a matter of precise selection, cutting, and pricing.

Under a new SMI meat system, a meat manager will now be able to precisely identify his raw material costs, costs of labor and other" factors so he can arrive at a pricing system based" on them.
