Howtotest watertemperature:Checkthewatertemperatureinsideyourdishwasherwithacandyor meatthermometer.Letthedishwasherrunthroughonefillandpumpoutcycle,thenletthedishwasherfillwithwaterthesecondtime.Whenyouhearthewaterstopfilling,unlatchthedoorandslowlyopenit.Measurethetemperatureofthewaterin thebottomofthetubthisway:

How tochooseand I!E3etheright d$?tergent.First, use only powderor liquiddetergentspecificallymade foruse in dishwashers.Other typeswill causecwersdsing.

Second, check the phosphatecontent.Phosphatehelpspreventhard-watermaterialsfromformingspotsor filmonyourdishes.Ifyourwaterishard(7grainsormore),yourdetergenthasto workharder.Detergentswitha higherphosphatelevelwillprobablyworkbetter.If thephosphatecontentislow(8.7%or less),you’llhavetouseextradetergentwithhardwater.

Yourwater department can tellyou how hard your water is. Socanyourcountyextensionagent.Or yourarea’swatersoftenercompany.Justcallandaskthemhowmany“grains”ofhardnessisinyourwater.

Howmuch detergentshould youuse? Thatdepends.Is yourwater“hard” or “soft”?Withhardwater,youneedextradetergentto getdishesclean.Withsoftwater,youneedlessdetergent.

Toomuchdetergentwithsoftwaternotonlywastesmoney,it canbeharmful.It cancausea permanentcloudinessofglassware,called“etching.“Anoutsidelayerofglassis etchedaway!Butwhytakeachancewhenit’seasyto findoutthe hardnessofyourwater.

Keep your detergent fresh anddry. Underthe sinkisn’ta goodplaceto storedetergent.Toomuchmoisture.Don’tputpowderdetergentintothedispenseruntilyou’rereadyto washdishes,either.(Itwon’tbe freshORdry.)

If your powder detergent gets oldor !kmq3y,throw it away.Itwon’twashwell.Olddetergentoftenwon’tdissolve,

If youuse a liquiddishwasherdetergent,theseprecautionsare notnecessarybecauseliquiddetergentsdon’t“lump” as theyageor-comein contactwith water.

How topreparethedishesforWashing.

If thisis yourfirstdishwasher,or ifyou’rereplacinga mucholdermodel,youmaywonderhowmuchpre-preparationyourdishesneed.Actuallyverylittle.Pre-rinsingofnormalfoodsoilsisnotnecessary.Withcommonsenseanda littlepracticeyou’llsoonknowwhatfoodsto remove.Herearesomeguidelines:

1. Scrapeoffbones,seeds,skins,toothpicksandotherhardsolids.Itis alsobesttoremovehardshelledvegetables,meattrimmings,leafyvegetablesandcrusts.Removeexcessivequantitiesofoilorgrease.

2. Removelargequantitiesofanyfood.Yourdishwasherhasa built-insoftfooddisposerthatpulverizessoftfoodbitsandflushesthemaway.It canhandlesmallamountsofsoftfoods,butlargeamountswillbedifficulttohandle.

Close the main cup.NOTE: Detergent cup may beopened manually with no harm.
