Shildon’s Brian Richardson won the Leek show down at the Sportsfield at the weekend, showing 186 cubic inches. Bobby Appleby came in second showing 219, but was put back for poor quality. Tommy Gray was

third with 150. Brian Walton won the bulk of the stands, winning the long leek with 146, the long and stump carrots, cauli-flower, fresh pulled onions, flat bottomed onions, small decs and small cacti. Bob Vasey won the inter-

mediate leek with 100 cubic inches, while Dave Snowball won the celery, shallots, and the buttonhole carna-tions and Joe Peers won the buttonhole rose. Ian Kitching’s spray chry-santhemums and the vase of blooms were judged to be the best, while Bobby Appleby won the parsnips and Tim Burrell’s tray if 3 veg came in first.At the Three Tuns, Barry Woodward won the show with 234 cubic inches. Brian Richardson was second with 205 and Rance Richardson was third. Billy Drennan in fourth place won Best Leek in Show. Dave Snowball came out on top in the intermediate leek with 149 and the long leeks with 186. Dave also won the stump carrots, celery, shallots, potatoes, and but-tonhole carnation. Barry Woodward won the parsnips and dressed onion and Joss Aldworth won the long carrots. Gary Richardson’s beetroot and flat bottomed onions were judged the best, while Brian Richard-son cleaned up in the flower section winning the poms, the decs, cacti, and vase of blooms.

Shildon Alive volunteers have been delighted by the way in which Facebook users have joined in their ‘share and win’ competi-tion. With the ‘cast’ of Frozen, Batman, and Draculaura due in Shildon on Saturday 4th October, the volunteers decided to set up the com-petition to see one lucky child win a free ticket to the exciting event. With an opportunity to sing the songs, get dressed up and meet Olaf the snowman, interest in the

event is growing fast, with tickets being sold from the Shildon Alive! community hub in Church Street every day. There is still time to get your tickets either by going to the facebook page or calling into the hub, and the competition is rolling on until the 29th Septem-ber when the winner will be announced. Rock giants to play Civic Hall

Diamond Head at the Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth Park.

Rock giants Diamond Head are set to play in Shildon as part of a music festival at the Civic Hall.The event, entitled ‘Blitzallica’, is taking place on Saturday 25th October, between 4pm and midnight, in aid of the Great North Air Ambu-lance. The band are renowned

in the world of rock for having a major influ-ence over Metallica, who openly acknowledge them as an important early in-fluence and have covered Diamond Head songs such as “Sucking My Love”, “Am I Evil” and “The Prince”.Other acts performing on the day include London bikers’ favourites Dumpy’s

Rusty Nuts, all female band The Amourettes, local band The Side Project, pagan rockers Old Corpse Road and, reform-ing for a one off show, Holosade. Completing the bill is Randy Mandy’s Disco.Tickets are on sale now costing £20 and are avail-able from the Civic Hall.

Garden waste collections for 2015More than 190,000 house-holds are being invited to join the County Durham garden waste collection service next year.From spring 2015 there will be an annual fee of £20 for garden waste collections from the kerbside. It will also be offered to an ad-ditional 35,000 properties which are not covered by the current scheme.Letters are being sent out this month to all eligible households. By signing up, residents will receive 16 fortnightly garden waste collections between spring and autumn. Anyone opting to take up

a three year subscription will get a discounted rate of £50.Durham County Coun-cil’s Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, Cllr Brian Stephens said: “With gov-ernment spending cuts, the only way we can continue to provide this service is to charge a small annual fee.“From next year, resi-dents will need to choose whether or not to join the scheme and I’m pleased that the option is going to be available to more households.”Local authorities are not obliged to provide garden

waste collections. Out of those that do, some 35 per cent already charge separately for the service. The £20 annual fee is lower than the national average.Households are invited to subscribe by 1st February to ensure they receive all 16 collections next year. A Shildon AFC footballer has pleaded guilty at Peterlee Magistrates Court to driving whilst disquali-fied, perjury, having no insurance and taking a vehicle without the owner's consent.Daniel Moore was given a 4-month suspended prison sentence and disqualified from driving for 18 months.The 29 year-old, who has played football locally at Spennymoor Town FC, Celtic Nation FC and most

recently Shildon AFC, was caught speeding in Durham while already disqualified.He has never actually held a driving licence but has continued to drive despite this, failing to tell friends and colleagues, who were all unaware.The suspended prison sentence puts Moore, who currently lives in Hartle-pool, at risk of imprison-ment immediately should he be caught driving within the next 18 months.

Residents left bewildered after vandals cut down trees

Residents living on Hilsdon Drive were left baffled after discovering trees on their street had been sawn down for no apparent reason. The act of mindless van-dalism occurred between the evening of Saturday 6th September and the morning of Sunday 7th September, when three

trees just below the bus stop were chopped in half.The trees were around 20ft high and surrounded by a 6ft high wire cage, and it was above this cage that the trees were sawn.Two males in their early 20s were seen in the vicinity on Saturday evening at around 9.30pm.A local resident comment-

Theft of metal fire hydrant coversPolice are appealing for witnesses following a spate of thefts of small metal fire hydrant covers across Shildon. It is believed that these offences are being com-mitted during the hours of daylight and that those responsible are driving a small white van, similar to a Ford Transit Connect in size. On first appearance

those responsible may appear to be acting in an official capacity, as it is believed that they dress in boiler suits and act in a very overt manner. Anyone sighting persons appearing to remove these metal covers, no matter their appearance or the vehicle being used, are urged to contact the Police immediately.

Heritage Skills Trainee – Steve Hopper overhauling the beam engine on Monday 1st September .

A beam engine built to power 19th century driving machine tools has received its annual overhaul in prep-aration for the opening of Soho Engine Shed at Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, which will once again be open to the public from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th September, as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days project. The beam engine dates to around 1830 and is thought to have originally been used in Timothy Hack-worth’s Soho Works in Shildon. Although the true identity of its builder remains a mystery, it has been sug-

gested that Hackworth himself could have been responsible for its con-struction, but there is also speculation that it could have actually been built by Robert Stephenson and Co.The engine works with Fre-mantle motion similar to that of locomotive engines such as Puffing Billy and Locomotion. It is reported that later in its life the beam engine was used at Darlington Works. This week Heritage Skills Trainees under supervision of the Workshop Manager at Locomotion completed an overhaul of the beam engine to ensure that it was operational in advance of the Heritage Open Days.

Visitors will have the chance to see inside the Soho Engine Shed and take a closer look at the beam engine and other exhibits on display – which include the Shildon Works Bell (from 1858) and the Hack-worth Plug Wheel.A knowledgeable team of museum staff and volun-teers will be available to give an in-depth insight into the items on display and talk about Timothy Hackworth’s role in the de-velopment of the railways.For more information on the Heritage Open Days project, contact Locomo-tion on 01388 777999 or visit locomotion@nrm.org.uk.

Beam engine receives overhaul for Heritage Open Days

Middridge Parish Council are imploring drivers to reduce their speed after a collision just outside of the village.The incident occurred on Sunday 7th September when a car was waiting to turn right at the allotments and was hit from behind by a van which failed to stop in time.Both police and ambu-lance crews attended the scene, and the driver of the car was taken to Dar-lington Memorial Hospital where he was treated for shock and neck injuries. A spokesperson for Mid-dridge Parish Council commented, “We have continuously asked the County Council over many

years to have the speed limit reduced to 40mph on both sides of the village. These two sections of roads feature sharp bends and blind hills, whilst being heavily used by pedestrians and cyclists. Many people cycle to the allotment and we could have had a fatality if someone on a bicycle was waiting to turn right.“There is no road sign indi-cating that there is a right turn ahead into the allot-ments.“Speeding is the Mid-dridge Parish Council PACT priority and we feel this needs to be addressed both through the village and on the surrounding ap-proaches.”

Learning the art of pho-tography led to four pupils from Saint John’s (Aided) School seeing their work on display in Auckland Castle this week. The opportunity to learn was provided by the castle as part of their community programme and a profes-sional photographer was employed to lead the sessions. Jamie, Ellie, Arron and Katie discovered all sorts of techniques such as ‘fore-ground interest’ and the ‘rule of thirds’ with their best photographs being selected for display at the castle. The children met Jane Ruffer at a special recep-tion on Monday when they were applauded for their

work. Jane is the wife of Jonathan Ruffer, who has to date committed around £30 million to the Auckland Castle project. Revd David, speaking to the children at the reception commented, “The creativ-ity and imagination of our children is just brilliant. Shildon has hundreds of reasons to be proud of itself and every one of those reasons is a child growing up to aspire to share their gifts and believe in them-selves.” Head teacher Andrew Farnell summed up the event perfectly. “Tonight”, he said, “Is quite simply about some of our children who are proving every day that, given the opportunity, they can truly be amazing”.

Vandals have caused damage to the rear patio doors and windows of a house in Willow Walk, on Friday 5th September, by throwing bricks and large stones at the premises.

Reverend Tomlinson had the pleasure of baptising two little ones at St John’s Church on Sunday 7th Sep-tember.Eight-month-old Emily Rose May was first to the font, accompanied by her mother Sarah Bradley, a support worker, and her father Christopher Smith, a driver.The couple, who live on Thomas Street, chose ten Godparents for their little girl; Susan Burrows, James Burrows, Nicole Storey, Martin Raamsalu, Adam Bradley, Janey England, Iain Collingwood, Tracey Gwynnette, Kaitlyn Hope and Jack Burrows.They celebrated the occasion with a reception at the Railway Institute. Next up was Joseph Paul Cooper, who was a year old on 10th September. His parents Kaylee Wilson, a housewive, and Greg Cooper, an Electrician, live in The Oval in Shildon.The couple chose four God-parents for their son. They were Ben Cooper, Gemma Brown, Michael Gibson and Elizabeth Wilson.Family and friends gathered at Old Shildon Working-men’s Club to celebrate the occasion.

Shildonbury to become annual eventThe first Shildonbury Party in the Park took place on Sunday 24th August, with or-ganisers saying the event was a resounding success.Around 600 paying custom-ers attended the festival, along with a large number of children, with most at-tendees being residents of Shildon.At a recent meeting of Shildon Town Council it was stated, “There were no major

organisational problems on the day and only one com-plaint was received regarding noise disturbance and conse-quently all partners should be commended.“Feedback from attendees has been very positive and there certainly appeared to be a strong feelgood factor on the day with a number of requests for it to become an annual event.”Although promoters of the

event made a slight loss, they were keen to insist that this was usually the case at first-time events and that they hope to host the festival again next year. They also stated that they wish to establish it as a per-manent event on the festival calendar and that they have plans for the 2015 festival to be a larger scale affair, attracting around 1,500 people.

Last weekend saw the 34th Great North Run take place and, with it, many other athletic events on the quayside in NewcastleOn Saturday Cameron Boyek brought a Shildon vest to our TV screens as he lined up with a stellar cast of international athletes, such as Bernard Lagat and Asbel Kiprop, in the BUPA Great North Mile, in which he ran an impres-sive 4.06.38In the Junior Great North Run Ryan Watson blazed a trail in the 13-14 boys age group, finishing 31st in a time of 15.44 with his team mate Harrison Daglish fol-lowing him in 59th place in 17 minutes dead. In the 11-12 girls age category Chloe Fairclough topped off a brilliant season with a 9th place

finish in a time of 16.45. Also in the 11-12 age group Adam Hanby made his junior GNR debut in 77th place with a time of 17.57. In the 9-10 category Anna Airey came home in 268th with a time of 26.45.At Hackworth Park on Saturday Elizabeth Wood completed her 59th parkrun finishing in 5th place in 22.11, with Eddie Murphy in 6th place in 22.59.On Sunday, in the Great North Run itself, David Beadle led the first quartet of Shildon runners home with a time of 1.44.02. New member Gareth Preston was close behind in time of 1.46.32, followed by David Johnston in 1.48.14 and Andrew Griffiths in 1.52.32. After a brief lull the ladies

showed their colours as Nicola Dent crossed the line in 2.04.18 with Irene Ross next in 2.16.24. John Gray chalked up GNR number 34 having competed in every Great North Run since its incep-tion. Crossing the line in a time of 2.41 47 John is already aiming for run number 35.Sarah Tilley and Emma Flynn rounded off Shildon's posse of athletes with times of 2.46.43 and 2.50.11 respectively. Also on Sunday, club member Gareth Shaw swapped his running kit for some attire that was a little more formal as he married Hannah Gautrey.“Congratulations to you both from everyone at Shildon R&AC,” said a spokesperson.

RCC fundraiserSinger and songwriter Antonia Sidgwick, from Shetland, will be perform-ing at the Bay Horse pub in Middridge on behalf of

Shildon Railway Cricket Club.The event will take place on Friday 12th September, from 8pm.

Shildon AFC Under 14s are looking for new players.Children just starting Year 9 at school are eligible. “We are hoping for a suc-cessful season this year and welcome any budding footballers to come along,” said a spokesper-son.

The birds of Old Shildon Homing Society were released from Huntingdon at the weekend, 169 miles from home.In 1st and 4th place were the Gray Bros, while Smith

Alderson & Spark claimed the 2nd and 3rd spots and M/M Peacock & TJ Brown came in 5th and 6th. The winning bird arrived home in 3 hours and 49 minutes.

Shildon AFC left it lateShildon AFC got back to winning ways on Saturday 6th September at Dean Street, with a 2 – 1 win against Newcastle Benfield, with both goals being scored quite late in the game.After Shildon’s keeper tipped over a long range effort from Mark Convery, Shildon created several chances to open the score.Mark Hudson fired straight at the keeper then headed wide, before Chris Emms’ shot was tipped over.Just before the break Emms, Paul Connor and

Ben Wood all had shots one after another blocked by Benfield’s defenders.Half Time: Shildon AFC 0 Newcastle Benfield 0.Early in the second half Shildon had all the posses-sion, but against the run of play, Benfield took the lead on 65 minutes when Michael Riley broke away and found Paul Brayson, who shot low past Lewis Graham.Shildon had numerous corners and pressed hard for the equaliser, and on 83 minutes Paul Connor fired over the keeper but the

ball was headed off the line by Chris Carr. Two minutes later, with time running out, the Rail-waymen got their reward when Jamie Harwood fired through a crowd of players for 1 – 1. Shildon AFC are expecting a big crowd at Dean Street on Saturday 13th Septem-ber, when they entertain Whitby Town in the 1st Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup. Just 3 days later on Tuesday

16th September they travel to Ashington in a league game, followed by a big local derby on Saturday 20th September when the Railwaymen are away at West Auckland Town, also in the league.
