However, for Naomi Tom-linson, just returned from the Philippines, the UK weather is decidedly chilly.

Naomi, daughter of Revd. David, Vicar of Saint John’s, established and runs a charity in Payatas, the poorest part of Manila, and works with street children and working children.Living amongst those she works with, Naomi has set up a drop-in centre, cur-rently feeding and educat-ing over a hundred children each day. Many of the working children start work at 2am, working through until lunch time when they take a break, during which they are able to call in at the centre for a meal, get a nap, have a class, and then sleep before the next night begins. Alongside the centre the charity runs a street football programme with hundreds of children enjoying the game. Naomi is in the UK for six weeks and will be speaking at Saint John’s Church about her experiences on Monday 2nd September at 7:30pm. All are welcome.

Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon is reaching new audiences as part of a major History and Heritage campaign this month.The museum has been showcased alongside other heritage attractions in Durham as part of Visit County Durham’s national marketing campaign.Heritage is the second of three themes in an overall project funded by £450,000 from the Govern-ment’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF) administered by VisitEngland and with match funding to the tune of £210,000 provided by Durham tourism operators and local partners. Sarah Towers, Marketing Communications Officer at Locomotion said, “We are delighted to be part of this campaign – it is a great opportunity to promote the museum to the wider audience via a combina-tion of outdoor advertis-

ing, online advertising on high traffic websites along with working with national newspapers. “We hope that by working together, the partners can demonstrate to potential visitors there are many different opportunities for visitors to Durham.“The county has wonder-ful history and heritage attractions. “Durham has so much for visitors to enjoy from railway heritage, to Victo-rian character, castles and arts and architecture and we hope that many more people will be able to enjoy the fantastic range of experiences on offer”.The museum is currently receiving profiling on the campaign website www.thisisdurham.com/heritage which features information on all the key historic attractions from across the county.Locomotion is open daily and admission is free.

At around 5pm on Saturday 27th July, a teenage boy cycled to a shop on Auckland Terrace, Shildon, but on coming outside he discovered that his cycle, valued at £350, had been stolen. He went back inside the shop and told the shop-keepers, who called the police. At Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court, Liam Fowler and David Oakley pleaded

guilty to the offence.Fowler, aged 23, of Edward Street, Eldon Lane, also pleaded guilty to assault-ing a police officer who had gone to arrest him and pleaded guilty to assaulting the boy’s father, who had gone to retrieve the bike. Fowler has recently served a nine months prison sentence for affray and possession of an offensive weapon and had previously served twelve months for

robbery. Oakley, aged 20, of Stargate Close, Newton Aycliffe, is currently serving a twelve months supervision order for criminal damage and assaulting a police officer.Fowler will now return to the court at Peterlee on 5th September, whilst matters in the case against Oakley were stood down in order for the Probation Service to provide a pre-sentence report.

On 10th May police executed a search warrant at a property in Main Street, Shildon, and found a large quantity of cannabis, stored in bags in the kitchen cupboards.At Newton Aycliffe Mag-istrates’ Court, Gareth Graham Wakefield, aged 23, pleaded guilty to pos-session of the Class B drug and was sentenced to a twenty four month conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs and the Victim Support Sur-charge totalling £100.The court heard that the defendant suffered from learning difficulties and, to help with his independ-

ence, his mother and stepfather had assisted Wakefield and his partner in setting up their own home together. However, when another man came to lodge with them, problems arose and it was he to whom the larger amount of the cannabis belonged. In mitigation, Wakefield was said to have received “a huge wake up call” and had since stopped smoking cannabis and ceased his association with certain people. The defendant and his partner have now returned to live with their respec-tive parents.

The Pioneering Care Part-nership (PCP) is looking for volunteers to help with a project aimed at improv-ing the health, wellbeing and quality of life for local people in Shildon and sur-rounding areas. The PCP Health Buddy Scheme is aimed at people living in or around Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Shildon, Spennymoor, Sedgefield and Ferryhill who may feel isolated, lonely or vulnerable, to regain their independence and confidence. As a Volunteer Befriender/Health Buddy you will develop a trusting rela-tionship with clients, help them with shopping or attending medical appoint-ments, encourage them to

engage with social activi-ties or groups and access services, or simply take the time to listen over a cup of tea. If you know your commu-nity, and are patient and reliable, then this could be an ideal opportunity for you.A full training and support package will be provided by PCP and volunteers can give a minimum of 2 hours a week.Grace is 34 and is currently volunteering as a Health Buddy for the scheme. Entrants are invited to submit a short story of no more than 3,000 words by the closing date of 31st August. The fee is just £2.50 for adults but is free for junior entries.The first prize in the compe-tition is £300, while the first

Leslie Marie Gibson, of Brougham Court, Peterlee, pleaded not guilty to stealing a quantity of jew-ellery when she appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court recently. It is alleged that, between September 2007 and July 2012, the 42 year-old stole goods in excess of £15,000 from Darren McCormick Jewellery Ltd., a distribu-tion company based in Redworth Road, Shildon.

William Edward Hopwood, of Burnie Gardens, Shildon, failed to appear before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

The magistrates agreed with the Crown Prosecu-tion Service that, due to the breach of trust and length of the alleged of-fending, the matter was not suitable for the Magis-trates’ Court and the case will go to the Crown Court, Durham, on 4th Septem-ber. The defence made no representations and the defendant was released on unconditional bail.

The 46 year-old faces charges that, on Saturday 3rd August, in Shildon, he used threatening words and behaviour and resisted a police officer in the ex-ecution of his duty.

In the early hours of Friday 16th August, Jack Gray of Fir Tree was stopped by police officers in Fir Tree after being found driving a Ford Ka without a licence.He was dealt with for several offences and the car was seized.Overnight on Wednesday 14th August a Vauxhall Vectra parked on Salisbury Terrace, Shildon had all four tyres punctured.

Shildon’s young athletes were showcasing their talents across the length and breadth of the UK last week. Liverpool was the venue for the Northern age group Championships and the athletes had to compete against not only their com-petitors but horrendous wet and blustery condi-tions. However, never to be deterred, Georgia Hirst took to the track and quali-fied for the final of the U17 women’s 300m, where against a national class field she finished in a cred-itable 6th place. U14 girl Jade Hepple made the long journey to Aberdeen for the Scottish National age group Cham-pionships and encountered similar weather conditions to Liverpool. Nevertheless, Jade gained valuable experience in her first competition of this magnitude and finished in a solid 5th place in the heats of the 100m, a feat she

On Sunday 25th August the annual fundraising cricket competition will be held at the Sportsfield (the BR). The event, again organ-ised by Michael Lumley, is in aid of the charity Pancreas North and is held in memory of his grand-mother Sheila. Four teams, each of which pays for the pleasure of playing, will be drawn into two semi-finals, the winners of which will play the final.

After a disappointing midweek defeat in the league against Crook Town, the Railwaymen were at Garforth Town, near Leeds on Saturday 17th August in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup and were comfort-able winners.With a strong wind behind them, Shildon took an early lead when keeper Dominic Smith’s poor clearance was pounced on by Ben Wood, who returned the ball inside his near post.

U11 girl Leah Ru-therford was in action at Whitley Bay in the Notan Quad kids event. She gave a very good all round per-formance recording a time of 11.5s for the 75m, 2m 14s for the 600m (pb), 3.59m in the long jump and 6.42m in the throws. In the final NEGP event at Monkton Stadium, senior man, Scott Michael contin-ued to progress by lowering his 400m pb and finishing 2nd in the 200m.

Team captains Michael, his father Dave and work partner Paul Harnett, of Middleton Road Garage, along with a team largely drawn from Elm Road WMC led by Michael Roberts, will battle it out for the trophy.There will be a raffle with all proceeds going to support this worthy cause. Entrance is free and the bar will be open. The first game commences at 10.30 am.

Castle Eden, at 50 without loss, looked set for a comfortable win but the weather intervened to save the home side, who were kept waiting until 6.35pm by the visiting captain, in vain hope of restarting the game. Saturday sees high-flying Burnmoor visit the Sportsfield in the first team’s clash and the match will be sponsored by County Councillor Henry Nicholson and his grandson Harry.Bank Holiday Monday sees the first team at Evenwood, both fixtures being revered for the second team.

Ben Wood fires home from 22 yards to give Shildon AFC the lead at Garforth Town in the FA Cup last Saturday. Shildon will face Penrith at Dean Street in the next round.
