Year 2 pupils from Chilton Primary School helped to brighten up their village
Mayor helps Chilton youngsters to plant spring bulbs
when they planted bulbs on land near their school on Wednesday 18th
October.This is the 7th year in a row pupils from the school have taken part in bulb planting, which looks set to be an annual tradition.Bulbs have already been planted in the main street and the surround-ing area by Scott Elwood of SE Landscapes, who was on-hand to share his expertise with the 6 and 7 year-olds.Mayor of Chilton, Tonya Duprey, also took part in the fun activity.The children enthusiasti-cally planted approxi-mately 4,000 daffodil and tulip bulbs.A spokesperson for Chilton Town Council said, “Hope-fully the children and resi-dents will enjoy the array of colour when the bulbs flower in the spring.“We would also like to thank the 45 Chilton Primary School children, Cllr Duprey, Scott from SE Landscapes and all those involved in the bulb planting.”

A ball in support of the charity appeal to bring new MRI scanners to Darlington Memorial and Bishop Auckland Hospitals is being held at Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield, on Friday 17th November.Tickets are £65 each and tables seat ten. The evening starts with a drinks reception at 7pm, followed by a four course meal and three comple-mentary bottles of wine per table. Field of Poppies in lights to mark PasschendaeleWest Cornforth & Ferryhill Battle of Passchendaele Remembrance Service will take place on Sunday 29th October from 7pm at Corn-forth Church Hall.Over eight months ago, the congregations of Holy Trinity, Cornforth and St Luke’s Ferryhill, came together with the wider community in the two villages, as well as people from across County Durham, to accomplish
something truly extraordi-nary; Field of Poppies.The installation is 8 metres high, 6 metres wide and covered in 19,240 hand-crafted poppies, each rep-resenting a life lost in the Great War.Field of Poppies is on display outside Cornforth Church Hall on Vicarage Road, West Cornforth, until 13th November. Now the community is coming together once again
to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele. On 29th October, for one night only, Field of Poppies will be floodlit and, in tribute, Piper Steve Wright will play and lead commu-nity singing as prayers for peace and thanksgiving are offered.“All are welcome to join us on this memorable occasion,” said a spokes-person.

A haul of dangerous fireworks seized by police.
Keeping safe for firework festivities
Residents and retailers in County Durham are being advised to stay safe in the run up to this year’s Bonfire Night festivities.Any premises storing explo-sives and fireworks must be either licenced by Durham County Council for year round sales or licensed for storage for sales over the restricted periods covering Bonfire Night, Christmas and New Year as well as Chinese New Year and Diwali festivals.Officers from the council’s trading standards team visit retailers in the run up to each firework period to ensure correct storage and CE (European Conformity) compliant products are on sale. Failure to store explosives and fireworks safely can put lives and property at risk, and can also affect the insurance for business premises.Joanne Waller, head of
environment, health and consumer protection said, “We want everyone to enjoy the firework period and act responsibly, both retailers and customers.“Retailers must only sell to people over 18 and must store fireworks in an appro-priately safe manner.“Consumers are advised to handle and use the fire-works they buy with care, by keeping them out of the reach of children and by following all the safety instructions supplied with them. “Our officers will be visiting traders in the run up to November, inspecting storage arrangements and products on sale ensuring compliance with the law and offering advice to retailers.“We also monitor online sales of goods, including fireworks to identify people who may be illegally storing and selling fireworks via social media.”
Traders must also adhere to their legal obligation regard-ing the sales of fireworks to under-18s. Traders found to be breaking the law and selling to underage customers face investigation and prosecu-tion. Changes in the law in recent months have meant that all fireworks sold since 5 July have to bear the CE mark denoting conformity with safety standards.Retailers and other distribu-tors must ensure that any residual stock and any new incoming stocks are CE marked, as it is an offence to sell non-compliant products.If traders find themselves with no compliant stocks, they must contact their sup-pliers to arrange the safe return of the products.If they are unable to do so, traders can then contact Durham Trading Standards for further advice.Strict controls also exist as to the correct storage of fireworks.Generally, retailers are able to store up to 250kg on their premises in appropriate con-tainers. Amounts above these limits up to 2,000kg are subject to additional requirements in approved places.Anyone with concerns or information as to illegal storage of fireworks or under age sales being made should report the matter to the Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06.

Christmas shoebox appeal
The time of the year is rapidly approaching when our children are eagerly anticipating opening their Christmas presents, but not all children everywhere will be so fortunate this Christ-mas. It is for this reason that the charity Samaritans Purse run their ‘Operation Christmas Child’ which is more widely known as the ‘Christmas Shoebox Appeal’.Once again, a local group in conjunction with the
Methodist Church will be organising a Ferryhill and surrounding area appeal, and filled shoeboxes can be taken along to the church from Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th November, from 5pm to 6.30pm. Goods to go in the boxes or donations towards trans-port costs would also be gratefully received. For more information, or advice on what can and can’t be included, contact Mrs Wilson on 01388 720571.
A Dedication Service will also be held on the evening of Sunday 19th November at 6pm, when the boxes will be blessed and sent on their way to needy and unfortunate children in eastern European coun-tries.A spokesperson for the shoebox team commented, “Once again, we are hoping for a very successful year for this very worthy cause. We give you a very warm welcome.”

Ferryhill Town Band and the Northern Voices Choir will be taking part in a night of Christmas themed music on Friday 8th December, starting at 7.30pm.The bar will be open and there will also be a raffle.A spokesperson for the church said, “This is an opportunity for everyone
to come along and get into the Christmas spirit, as there will be many oppor-tunities for a sing-along!”Tickets for the event are £5 and will be available from Vicar Gary Norman (01740 655232), Andrew Potts (07794 928 252) or Lynne Arnold (07752 618 587) from 1st November.

Ferryhill Town Band have won a fantastic collection of trophies and awards in 2017.
Trophy haul for FTB
Ferryhill Town Band have had a busy and successful year, starting last October when they won the Stanley entertainment contest. In November the band then played in a contest at Holmfirth and were placed second.In February they won the Durham County Brass Band Association contest at
Peterlee, also winning the best soloist, best middle of the band and best conduc-tor, while in March they were placed third at the Northern Regional contest held at Durham’s Gala Theatre.In June they triumphed at the Beamish March and Hymn Tune contest, wining best march and best hymn.Also in June, the band entered a contest at Eas-ingwold where they were second in their section and came fifth overall, beating bands from higher sections.In July they won the Picnic in the Park contest, held at Houghall, also winning best march and best solo.The following month they competed at Hardraw Scar
contest and were placed second, winning the best march and best hymn tune prizes.Because of their success, they have now been promoted to the second section.A spokesperson comment-ed, “We are pleased that we have appointed Gareth Sykes as our new musical director to take us in the higher section. Gareth has a wealth of experi-ence playing in top section bands and the band is excited by his enthusiasm.Our next concerts take place on 11th November, 7pm, at Bishop Auckland Methodist Church and 12th November, 9.30am, at Fer-ryhill Armistice parade.

St. Aidan’s Church in Chilton is holding an Annual Memorial Service on All Souls Day, Wednesday 1st November, at 7pm.“Please come and join us at Service and light a candle in remembrance of a loved

Dear Editor,
The children and volunteers at Chilton Junior Club, which runs on a Tuesday evening in Chilton Community College, would very much like to thank the staff and users of the Wheatsheaf Public House in Chilton for their donation of £100.
The £100 was collected from entrants in a recent pool competition who in turn, working with the Wheatsheaf staff, decided to donate this to the junior club.
The Juniors has just started up again and has over 45 regular users aged 8 to 12 years. The money will be used to buy in extra materials and coaching for the kids. Thank you!

We would like to thank each and every one of the people who were involved individually, but there were so many people it would be just impossible. I am sure the money will be spend very wisely by Macmillan and help toward supporting someone suffering from that dreadful BIG 'C'.

On Wednesday 4th October, members of Ferryhill Village Women’s Institute held their Harvest Celebra-tion, when they were given a very interesting talk on ‘plants in our garden’, by Howard Leslie.The group were also treated to a lovely bowl of home made soup, which was made and donated by Committee Member Ellen Smith. Next, the ladies held an auction to sell the veg-etables and other produce which was donated by all the members.A spokesperson said, “Thank you to all who donated and then pur-
chased the goods. We are very lucky we have a really lovely and friendly group of members. “Our next evening will be our 90th Birthday Party and will be held on Wednesday evening, 1st November in Dean Bank Community Centre at 6.30pm, when our members, County Chairman and special guests from our other local groups will be entertained by Nice and Easy. A buffet will follow, after which there will be a talk by one of our local ladies. “I am looking forward to seeing everyone at this very special 90th Birthday Party Night.”

Vote for Hardwick as UK’s best parkResidents are being asked to vote for a popular County Durham park to help it clinch a prestigious award. Hardwick Park, near Sedgefield, is one of 14 parks in the North East nominated in the best park category for this year’s national Fields in Trust awards.The awards celebrate the contributions and achieve-ments of the Fields in Trust partners over the past 12 months, with categories for individuals, groups and initiatives.The UK’s best park category was introduced
three years ago, with nominees invited to put forward their local park, whether the space is great for a Sunday afternoon stroll or the playground is a hive of activity for children.Durham County Council, which manages Hardwick Park, is calling on members of the public to take part in the vote and secure the award.Cllr Brian Stephens, Durham County Coun-cil’s Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: “We are very proud of Hardwick Park and the pleasure it brings not only to resi-dents of County Durham but those who travel from
