FIVE MORE NOTES NO MEDIA PERSON SHOULD BE WITHOUT Since you’ve been gone –Alex Ovechkin has missed six games and 15 days, but returns to the ice still leading the NHL in goals (14,tied) and shots (86). Happy returns –The Capitals are 1-0-2 in games after Alex Ovechkin returns from missing time (0-0-2 last season). Ovechkin has onegoal and one assist in those three games. Washington is 5-5-0 without Ovechkin in the lineup since he joined the team in 2005. Flash forward –Tomas Fleischmann missed the first 11 games of the season recovering from a blood clot in his leg, but has sevengoals in nine games since his return. His 0.78 goals per game ranks third in the league, trailing only Ilya Kovalchuk (1.20) and AlexOvechkin (1.00), and his 33.3% shooting percentage leads the league. Fleischmann scored the first goal of the game Saturday in the200th game of his career, extending his point-scoring streak to a career-best eight games. Fleischmann’s streak is the third-longestactive streak in the NHL, trailing only Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry of Anaheim (11 games each). One that got away –Saturday marked the first game this season that the Capitals lost by more than one goal. It was also the first timethat Washington trailed by more than two goals at any time in a game. View from the top –Washington stands tied for first place in the Eastern Conference for the first time this late in a season since April 7,2000. The Capitals are also tied for the fewest regulation losses in the NHL (4). SERIES NOTES –Washington leads, 85-75-18-5, entering the 184th meeting, and trails, 36-43-9-2, on the road–New York won the first meeting, 4-3 on Oct. 8 at Verizon Center, Washington’s fourth game of the year and its first regulation loss–The Capitals won last year's season series, 3-0-1 (NYR was 1-2-1)–One of Washington's wins last season (12/23 at NYR) matched the biggest comeback and franchise history (down 4-0, the Caps won5-4 in OT)–Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green each had three regular-season goals against NYR last year–Washington beat NYR in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals in seven games last season–Current Capitals Mike Knuble and Tom Poti both played for NYR; former Capital Donald Brashear is on the NYR roster–Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee played for the Rangers MORE CAPS NOTES Powerful stuff –The Capitals have scored a power-play goal in nine of their last 10 games and are 12-for-34 (35.3%) in that time. Theyare 6-for-13 in the last five games (46.2%) with at least one PPG in each of those games. Second to one wins –Washington has trailed at some point in 11 games this year and has won nearly half of them (5-4-2). TheCapitals are 3-0-1 when their opponent scores first, the best points percentage (.750) in the NHL in that situation.  Spreading the wealth –Washington’s leaders in November scoring are Tomas Fleischmann (eight points), Brooks Laich and BrendanMorrison (seven each). Laich and Fleischmann ranked fifth and seventh, respectively, on the 2008-09 Capitals in scoring, whileMorrison was an offseason acquisition. Sinking feeling –Washington is 3-3-3 against Atlantic Division opponents and 6-0-0 against the rest of the Eastern Conference.Washington has played every Atlantic Division team at least twice except Pittsburgh, which the Capitals won’t face for the first time untilJan. 21. Goal oriented –The Capitals have scored 3.65 goals per game on the year, tied with Atlanta for the league lead. Washington ranks tiedfor first in third-period goals (26) and second in first-period goals (24). Starting something –Washington has scored first in 16 of 20 games this year. The Capitals have outscored their opponents 24-10 inthe first period and have scored at least one goal in the first period of 16 of their 20 games. Only Calgary (27) has scored more first-period goals and only Philadelphia (6) and Phoenix (8) have allowed fewer. Mathieu’s debut –Center Mathieu Perreault, the Capitals’ sixth-round choice in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, recorded two assists in hisNHL debut and scored his first NHL goal Saturday; he has five points in six games. He is scoring at a higher rate at the NHL level (0.83points per game) than he did in the AHL to start the season (0.64). Perreault is the fifth member of the Capitals’ 2006 draft class to reach the NHL (Nicklas Backstrom, Semyon Varlamov, Michal Neuvirth,Oskar Osala), the most of any NHL team.
