Game RecapOct. 3; Philadelphia 5 at New Jersey 2     The Devils held a season opener at the Prudential Center in Newark for the second straight year.  With the loss, theteam fell to 17-6-4 in 27 season home openers and 1-2-0 at Prudential Center. It marked the first time the team lost aseason opener that was played at home (17 previous contests, 12-0-5).      With the team trailing 4-0 in the third period, Brian Rolston (PP) scored the club’s first goal of the year on assistsfrom Niclas Bergfors and Dainius Zubrus.  Bergfors' assist was the first of his NHL career. Following a Flyers' goal,Jamie Langenbrunner added a short-handed goal to pull the team within three once again. Zubrus also added an assiston Langenbrunner’s tally for a multi-point evening.     Martin Brodeur (22 saves) took the loss in goal for New Jersey. Coming into tonight     The Devils started the regular season with a 5-2 loss Saturday night at home vs. Philadelphia to open its regular-season schedule. New Jersey completed its exhibiton slate with a mark of 4-0-1=9pts, all vs. Atlantic Division opposition.      The Devils completed the 2008-09 regular-season schedule with a mark of 51-27-4=106pts (.646), including afranchise-record 51 victories. The club established the record with their 50th win of the season April 9 in a 3-2 shootoutdecision at Ottawa.  Also April 9, the team clinched its seventh Atlantic Division title in the last 12 seasons followingPhiladelphia's loss to NY Rangers earlier that evening. With 106pts overall, New Jersey surpassed its previous season's82-game mark (46-29-7=99pts).     With a 3-2 win April 4 at Buffalo, the Devils clinched home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. With a 5-4overtime win April 3 vs. Tampa Bay, the club reached the 100-point mark for the 11th time. On March 25, New Jerseyclinched a playoff berth following Florida's 5-2 loss at Buffalo.     On February 28 vs. Florida (7-2 win), the Devils reached the 40-win mark for the 12th straight season. The streak oftwelve consecutive 40-win seasons represents the longest current stretch in the league. Twelve straight also ties Boston(1968-69--1979-80) for the second longest stretch in NHL history (13, Mtl., 1970-71—1982-83). On March 1 vs.Philadelphia (3-0 win), New Jersey was assured of its 17th straight .500-or-better campaign.     The Devils' 11-game winning streak on home ice February 9-March 20 was the longest in franchise history (8, 3 times,most recently Jan. 3-Feb. 7, 2006). The team's seven-game winning streak on the road January 13-February 6 was thesecond-longest in team history (10, Feb. 27-Apr. 7, 2001) and tied for the longest in the league this season (Bos., Dec.12-Jan. 15). New Jersey's 23 victories/49 points away from Prudential Center were the second most in the EasternConference (Bos., 24-12-4=52pts).     The Devils entered the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 12th straight season, the 18th time in the last 19 seasons, and the19th time overall. The club's stretch of 12 consecutive post-season appearances is the longest in the Eastern Conferenceand the second longest in the league (Det., 18). New Jersey won Stanley Cup Championships in 2003, 2000 and 1995.     The Devils will return to action and open the road portion of their 2009-10 schedule Thursday night at Tampa Bay (7:30PM, MSG Plus, SportsRadio 66 WFAN). Thursday's game will also open a three-game road trip for New Jersey.  Coaching staff     This season, Jacques Lemaire returns behind the Devils' bench for the first time since the 1998 Stanley CupPlayoffs.  He is joined by Assistant Coaches Mario Tremblay (formerly asst. coach in Min.), Tommy Albelin, and ScottStevens;  as well as goaltending coaches Jacques Caron and Chris Terreri. Training camp     Devils’ training camp got underway Saturday, September 12 with 60 players reporting to the team’s Newark, NJtraining base. This year’s camp included six goaltenders, 19 defensemen and 35 forwards. Player moves     On Thursday, Devils’ right wing Brendan Shanahan announced his decision not to remain with the team.     On Wednesday, the club assigned defensemen Jay Leach and Rob Davison, and forward Tim Sestito to Lowell(AHL) after they cleared waivers. On Sunday, four players were assigned to Lowell: goaltender Jeff Frazee; and forwardsOlivier Magnan-Grenier, Ben Walter, and Vladimir Zharkov.     On September 25, the team signed free agent center Rob Niedermayer, while also signing left wing Andrew Peters,who was attending training camp on a tryout basis.     On September 24 seven players to Lowell, while three players were returned to their junior teams. Assigned to Lowellwere: goaltender Gerald Coleman; defensemen Matthew Corrente and Tyler Eckford; and forwards Patrick Davis,Nick Palmieri, Michael Swift, and Alexander Vasyunov. Returned to their junior teams were: defensemen Eric Gelinas(Lewiston, QMJHL) and Alexander Urbom (Brandon, WHL); and forward Patrice Cormier (Rimouski, QMJHL).

YOUTH IS SERVED:At 19 years 100 days old, Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto is the youngest defenseman and second youngest player infranchise history to play on opening night. Former Rangers forward Don Raleigh is the youngest player in Rangers history to play ina season-opening game. Raleigh was 17 years 125 days old when he debuted for New York in the 1943-44 season opener on Oct.30, 1943 at Toronto. With his goal on Saturday vs. Ottawa, Del Zotto (19 years 101 days) is the first teenager to score a goal for the Rangers sinceManny Malhotra (1998-99), and the second youngest defenseman in team history to accomplish the feat behind Red Garrett (18years 154 days).
