From the Principal’s Desk A RECORD FAIR! Our recent Fair was a great example of an effective community working together to build. Not only did the Fair raise a record amount of $52,000, but it also generated a great community spirit. It was fantastic to see so many giving their time and resources both before and on the day. The funds will go towards the first stage of our grounds redevelopment to provide more outdoor seating and hard court play areas for our children. We anticipate commencing this project early in the new year, God willing. A big thank you to everyone involved but especially the P&F organising committee – sisters Em Mansfield, Leah Badams, Deb Joseph and Jo Farren – for their imagination, dedication and sheer hard work! LOOKING FORWARD As we plan for next year, it is great to note that over 40 new students (including Receptions) are enrolled to start in 2014. We look forward to welcoming a number of new families. We will also have our largest cohort of Year 12 students since we began. The Council has been working on a new 3-year Strategic Plan to guide the ongoing development of the College – and some interesting initiatives will flow from there. The staff are forwarding a number of projects to improve student learning and consolidate what we do well. The P&F are excitedly planning some great events – including the second Symphony in the Park scheduled for Saturday 29 th March. We look forward to all these things and more, if the Lord wills, as we await his Son from heaven. END OF YEAR As the year closes, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to everyone who is part of our wonderful “Heritage Community”. It has been encouraging to see how many have grasped the spirit of our theme for the year of “building one another up” – students, staff, parents, grandparents and many others beside. Thank you all for your contributions to the lives and development of God’s “little ones”. And above all, praise be to our God who superintends all our activities and makes all things possible. The final highlight of our year is still to come. Our Annual Presentation Night is an important opportunity for the acknowledgement of student achievement and effort, and for thanksgiving. Please make the effort to be there next Thursday (12 th December) at 7:30 pm in the Sports Centre. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. Please invite all your family and friends - a warm welcome awaits you all. I trust that all families might have a restful and enjoyable time over the coming holiday break. GENERAL NEWS FAREWELLS Bro Kevin Gore will be leaving us at the end of this term to commence real retirement! Bro Kevin thought he had retired until we twisted his arm (along with his brother, Roger) to teach Tech Studies part time in 2010 – and he has been on the staff ever since. We have really appreciated Bro Kevin’s commitment and help with the development of Tech Studies over this time, and wish him all the best in retirement.

We are sorry to be losing two of our valued music teachers too. Sis Deb Mansfield has been teaching piano for the last 6 years and there will be many students who will fondly remember her infectious laugh, her encouragement and inspiration.

Rosalie Westphalen came to Heritage first in 2006 teaching violin and viola, and since that time has nurtured the musical talents of many budding string players. She has a passion for strings, and has been the mentor of the string ensemble throughout her time with us. Among many other things she has transposed and simplified the music of many hymns so that our younger players can access them. Her skills and experience have been invaluable in the scholarships program and with the Year 6-7 Band which she has conducted for the last 2 years. Rosalie intends to pursue further study in music education, and we wish her all the best for the future and thank both her and Deb for their

fantastic contributions to the music program at Heritage. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! We would like to express our sincere thanks to all those who have volunteered to help forward the work of the College during this past year. Every day there are numerous volunteers on site – some working in classrooms with children, some attending excursions or camps, some helping in the Library or Home Economics, some assisting with the grounds or organising fundraising – the list goes on! It is wonderful to see parents and grandparents so committed and so willing. Thank you to you all for your valuable contribution and your example.

COIN TRAIL FOR BOUGAINVILLE SCHOOLS As part of our “Build Up” theme this term, the middle-upper Primary classes are writing letters to students in the two Christadelphian schools in Bougainville. There are between 50 and 60 students in these schools and all are learning English as most of their schooling is in English. Their villages are high in the mountains of Bougainville, where life is simple and uncluttered. Most have very little of this world’s goods – so we have decided to use the money from our Coin Trail to buy a T-shirt for each of the children. A rough estimate of the Trail at the moment indicates that we have accumulated only about $150, but we need around $400 for T-shirts and packaging. It would be fantastic if we can meet

GENERAL NEWS this goal by the end of next week! This would mean an average contribution of about $1.50 per family. This is not a big ask – especially when we consider that most of the children there have very few clothes – and that we mostly have more than enough. “God loveth a cheerful giver”. PRESENTATION EVENING Don’t forget to invite all the family and friends to our annual Presentation Evening to be held this Thursday 12 December commencing 7:30 pm in the Sports Centre (God willing). The evening is one of the more formal events in our school calendar. All students are expected to wear complete summer school uniform. Students will sit in allocated seating on the night with their teachers. Students in the junior classes (Reception – Year 2) will be involved in an item at the start of the evening, and parents are asked to have them here at school by 7:15 pm so that they can get organised. There will be a short interval after the presentation of the Primary awards to allow the youngest children to return to and sit with their parents if they wish. At this time, any parents with only young children at the school may choose to go home. Children who are leaving at the interval are able to receive an ice-cream at the outside gate, provided they are accompanied by parents. There have been some wonderful achievements this year to acknowledge and there will be some great musical items – it promises to be an exciting night! SCHOOL STARTING DATE IN 2014 School will recommence in the new year for all year levels on Tuesday 28 January, God willing. 2014 CALENDAR A calendar for 2014 with important dates relating to the College and ecclesial activities is once again being produced. The calendar also includes school activities, Suburban Young People’s activities and major ecclesial events such as Special Efforts, Combined Weekend, Sunday School Picnic. There are photos of students and activities on every page. This year, an A5 calendar will be distributed to all families on the last day of term. We are also producing the calendar in an A4 size for sale at a cost of $10.00 and we would appreciate parents encouraging grandparents and friends to purchase these. The calendars will be available

for collection at Presentation Evening or from the College on the last day of school. An A4 calendar is a nice gift for family and friends as well as raising funds for the College. Please email your order to: [email protected] or phone sis Gwennyth on 8266 5122 by Wednesday, 11th December. VOICE TEACHER FOR 2014 We are keen to hear from adults or students interested in lessons from a Voice Teacher in 2014. Please email [email protected] with your expression of interest. We will inform you of the outcome of our enquiries in the new year. PIANO TEACHER Sis Amy Williams has a few tuition places available for piano lessons next year God willing. Interested parents are invited to make enquiries via sis Amy’s mobile 0404 668 868 or email: [email protected]. UNIFORM SHOP—HOLIDAY OPENING The uniform shop will be open for parents wishing to purchase or order uniform items in the last week of the school holidays on Thursday 23rd January 2014, God willing, between 9:00-11:00 am. SCHOOL & SPORT SHOES As many parents take advantage of the end of year sales to purchase new school footwear we take this opportunity to remind you all that the uniform requirements state that sports shoes need to be predominantly white, and not black-soled. Conventional black, lace-up, leather school shoes are to be worn with normal school uniform. Skate shoes, sneakers, ballet or canvas shoes are not permitted. Students in Years 1-3 may choose to wear plain dark blue sandals (without socks) in Terms 1 and 4. SCHOOL FEES FOR 2014 A letter will be sent home this week to all parents detailing school fees for next year. If you have any queries in relation to this please contact sis Priscilla. PILLOWS FOR SALE The College has some pillows for sale, used once only and in good condition, at $4 each. Please see staff at the Front Desk to purchase these.

LIBRARY STOCKTAKE CLOSURE

As of this week the library is now closed for borrowing so that a stocktake can be conducted. There is no borrowing of books over the end-of-year holiday period. Students who have library books on loan will need to return them by the last day of school – Thursday 12th December. TEXTBOOK FORMS

A reminder that all textbooks for sale need to be handed in along with the order form for textbooks for 2014 before the last day of school so that our orders can be sent in by the end of the year. Please hand them in to Aunty Judy in the Library.

We are pleased to share the following excerpt from a letter sent to Heritage by our Premier, Mr Jay Wetherill:

“You have supported another successful year with 688 schools in South Australia and well over 126,000 students completing the Challenge.

The Premier’s Reading challenge is now in its tenth year and more than 1020 students are eligible for the very first reader for life silver awards. These students started the Challenge in 2004 and have completed the Challenge every year since it bean – ten years ago.

Reading regularly is an important step in developing good literacy skills. It is the key to success at school and into the future.“

PRIMARY NEWS BUILDING THE TEMPLE TOGETHER This year students in the Primary classes have worked hard to earn Build-Up tokens that they have been able to exchange for Lego blocks to build a model of the Temple of the age to come. Hundreds of Lego blocks were earned by students for positive build-up behaviours, including thoughtfulness, caring acts of kindness, politeness, respectfulness, etc. It was so encouraging to see our students displaying such Christ-like qualities and at the same time learn about God’s kingdom and our future hope. CANOES LEFT AT SCHOOL We have a number of canoes left at school from the recent Year 7 camp and also in storage from previous years. We appeal to parents to please contact the school before the end of the school year to make arrangements for collecting their property. Any remaining canoes which have no arrangements in place for collection will be considered school property. RECEPTION—HP CLASS For the first 5 weeks of Term 4 our class enjoyed being part of the invigorating Tri-Skills sessions provided for R-4 students, using equipment for mats, single and double bars and mini-trampoline activities. Children learnt somersaults, making shapes on bars, cartwheels, landing on their ‘motorbikes’ and much more!

YEAR 4— BILLY CARTS, BROOM & CLOCK MAKING PROJECTS

Once again the Year 4 class travelled to the Eakin’s farm to test the billy carts they have been making since the first term. There were not too many mishaps, only a few spills along with some parents who found their second childhood on the way down the hill.

A well prepared BBQ was enjoyed by students, parents, uncles, aunts, grandmothers and grandfathers under the shade of a magnificent old gum tree. Including the students, there were 58 in attendance and our hosts, brother Malcolm and sister Anne, opened their farm and their hearts, as they have done for many enjoyable years, to the students of Heritage College.

The Year 4 students have now completed their

HERITAGE CRICKET TEAM

The Year 6/7 Heritage 20/20 cricket team has been very successful this year. The team has played 6 schools over 9 matches with 1 match still to come (this Saturday at Gepps Cross Reserve at 8.15am). The team has not lost a game - the average winning margin being 83 runs with the highest margin, a massive 154 runs. The squad that have contributed to this success over the 2013 season are: Harrison Bailye, Jack Johns, Cameron Wigzell, Darcy Joseph, Caleb Edgecombe, Stephen Cadieux, Lachlan Beacham, Jared Munaro (Year 7’s), Nathan Gibson, Asher Roper, Eden Kitto, Nathan Nicholls and Brock Pearson (Year 6’s). Many thanks for the support of the parents of these boys and also to Uncle Dan Nicholls who not only scored in every game, but kept the team going while Uncle Brett Arnold was away.

yard brooms and have promised to keep the pathways, driveways and patio areas at home as clean as a whistle! Each student hand painted their own design on their broom with the aboriginal dreamtime as the theme. Each broom has a sturdy set of bristles engineered for hard surfaces. The broom stands upright in a convenient corner when not in use. Well done! Our Year 4 students are presently finishing making a clock for their rooms at home. Each clock face features an individually chosen design ranging from pictures of pets, to big game fishermen and the one that did not get away. There are round clocks, square clocks, oval shaped clocks and a lot more! There is no better way of learning how to tell the time than making your own clock … and there will no excuses for being late for school next year!

PRIMARY NEWS NORTHERN DAYTIME FRATERNAL CONCERT

Last week the last Northern Daytime Fraternal for our senior brethren and sisters was held at Heritage College. The P&F committee provided a lovely morning tea to start the day after which their normal Bible program commenced.

In the afternoon our visitors were treated to a short concert from some of the Primary classes, which was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. It is always a pleasure to have the older members of our community share in our College activities and we do appreciate their support and example. Thank you to all who were involved in helping to make the event such a success!

On behalf of the Fair Co-ordinating Team, I'd like to thank everyone involved in the Annual Heritage Fair for 2013. The day was a great success in both monetary terms and in fellowship. We've learnt a great many things along the way, and forged many new friendships too! The weather was conducive to much eating, but not for water activities. There were lots of wares to be bought, but the sideshows didn’t go quite as planned. There are always things to be improved for next time, God willing! All in all, so many people gave so much, and we'd like to thank you all for your great contribution. It was a great day! Much love in our shared hope Sis Em Mansfield

Two weeks ago we held the annual Year 12 Dinner to formally farewell our Year 12 students. It was a wonderful evening where students were able to share in the joys and successes with their parents and teachers and enjoy a beautiful “enchanted forest” themed dinner. Our thanks goes especially to those parents and staff involved in organising the event.

A speech presented on the evening is reproduced below, entitled “What it was like to be a student at Heritage College”:

Eight years ago when I first started at Heritage College, Year 12 felt like an eternity away. It is hard to believe that our high school days are finally over, and that we are all about to make new and exciting decisions to hopefully get us to where we want to go in life.

Through all the classes, extra-curricular activities, school events and milestones, the most special part of Heritage would be the people around me,

who I have shared this time with, especially my school class, who have become my special friends who have shared this same journey. I will always remember the fun times we shared filled with countless laughs and happiness together. The year 12 class of 2013 are the most vibrant, expressive, loving, caring and fun group of

PAGE 10

YEAR 12 DINNER people I have known and I feel extremely privileged to have spent this year and the previous years working with. Each and every one of you has had an impact on who we are

as a group and also as individuals. It’s been these friendships that have been the cement that has held us together through this tough year. It has definitely been the best year of my life!

I want to thank the teachers for all their help and assistance they have given us over this year. I really value the time spent together and the strong relationships that have been formed between our class and teachers. So thank you for everything you have done for us!And I will also always remember Heritage for being a school that has provided us with an exceptional education by many dedicated teachers. We are extremely privileged to have been able to work together in a spiritually encouraging environment while being educated.

To my fellow year 12s, good luck with your future endeavours and ambitions in life. We are not just simply students at high school completing our final year, but a group of friends that will always be connected, God willing, in the future. I can now say to everyone here, we made it, and we have all made it together, so farewell!

FAREWELL TO SENIOR STUDENTS

Of course, all our Year 12 students will be leaving us at end of this year, with some embarking on further study while others commence work, apprenticeships or traineeships. This year, two of our Year 11 students, Amy Eakins and Jake Edgecombe, will also be leaving to either commence apprenticeships or further their training. Some of these students have spent their entire school life with us, and we wish all of them the best as they commence a new phase in their lives and we thank them for their contribution to the College over the past years.

SENIOR CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA REHEARSALS

It is important that both Senior Choir and Orchestra have an opportunity to have final rehearsals in preparation for Presentation Evening performances. There are two rehearsal times scheduled, and all students involved are asked to make sure they are at the College at the following times (God willing):

On both occasions, tea will be provided at a subsidised cost of $4. Students or parents should organise their own transport arrangements to and from these rehearsals.

Please note that on Presentation Evening, all those in Choir or Orchestra should wear complete summer uniform (including correct length socks!). For consistency, the boys should wear long trousers (not shorts) and short-sleeved shirts.
