From the Principal’s Bike… Craig Douglas Dear Parents/Caregivers Our final edition of The Gilston Grapevine for this term and the year is just racing. Im not talking about the up and coming GC600, but rather the amount of school events we have got through and the heavy term ahead. Hard copies of the Term Planner for Parents will come home this week to help you navigate the term and assist with communication between the school and home. Trivia Night Congratulations to the organisers of the recent Trivia Night, which was a complete success and a very enjoyable night. Tables dressed up in themes and had a lot of fun on the night. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the night and congratulations to the winning Couple Troubles Team who won the night in a sudden death question format. The prize money was donated to the Student Council for our students. Did I mention that the winning side was a staff side? A controversial win but one we will take. Pre Prep Transition Day This program kicked off last Tuesday and involved a number of rotations around our school including an information session for parents. Participation was high as we continue to enrol future students to our school. 588 Worongary Road Gilston QLD 4211 Ph: (07) 5501 2333 Fx: (07) 5501 2300 Absent Line: (07) 5501 2360 Email:[email protected] www.gilstonss.eq.edu.au Gilston SS Grapevine Dates for your Diary Keeping Parents Informed 19 September 2018 Edition 15 Friday 21 September Last Day Term 3 Monday 8 October First Day Term 4 Monday 8 October Uniform Shop open 7.30am-8.30am Tuesday 9,16,23 October Gilston Gecko Program Friday 12 October Farmers Fundraiser SRC Monday 15 October P & C Meeting 1:30pm Monday 22 October Student Free Day Friday 2 November Arts Night 4-7pm Monday 12 Nov School Captain Applicant Speeches Monday 3 Dec Academic Awards Parade Monday 10 Dec School Captains 2019 Announced Tuesday 11 Dec Yr 6 Graduation Night 6pm Staff participating in a visioning workshop during recent twilight session Teachers sharing high yield strategies to teaching

From the Principal’s Desk continued… Gala Day Students from grades 5 and 6 put their skills they have been building over the term to good use by participating against other schools at our recent Gala Day. Oztag, Tball, Tennis and Cricket were on offer for our students and I’m sure all involved slept well that night. Thank you to coaches and Mr Stavar for ensuring the day was a success. The behaviour and attitude shown by our kids throughout the day made me proud to be principal of Gilston SS. Japan Tour 2018 I am currently in Japan with our student tour group and would like to acknowledge the time both Mrs Doonican and Mrs Miller put into this school tour. A lot of preparation is required for such a trip and the result is an experience our students will never forget. We aim to move to an exchange program with a sister school in the future so watch this space. Congratulations to the Brown Family Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Brown who recently had a son named Jaxton. Mother, father and son all doing well. It’s time to be a grown up for our Mr Brown! NAPLAN Individual student NAPLAN reports went home last week. Early data indicates much improvement in reading and mathematics in grade 3 and a need to refine our work around writing across the school. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is a point in time test and should not be used alone to assess a child’s academic growth. School Community Support Finally, on behalf of my staff, I would like to thank you for your support this term and look forward to a productive and enjoyable term 4. Enjoy the holiday time with your family and friends. Craig Douglas Principal

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have contributed to the school community during term three and wish all families a safe and happy holiday. Every minute counts! – Being punctual is important Did you know your child’s best learning time is the start of the school day? This is when every minute counts the most. Being late on a regular basis does add up……

Welcome Pre-Prep families Last Tuesday, we welcomed our Pre-Prep families to Gilston State School as they participated in their first Gilston Geckos session. Students were excited and engaged in activities in a classroom environment. We look forward to getting to know our new families and ensuring they feel part of the Gilston community.

Day for Daniel Gilston State School will be participating in Day for Daniel on Friday, 26 October to reinforce the importance of Keeping Kids Safe in a physical and online environment. Students are invited to wear a red t-shirt on Friday, 26 October. They will learn about the importance of

personal safety using a range of resources developed by the Foundation. The Foundation is strongly committed to the development and education of Respectful Relationships for children and teenagers in our schools and communities.

Deputy Chat... Fiona Keswell Farmer Fundraiser – Dress as a Farmer on Friday 12 October Our Student Council has received numerous requests by students, parents and staff to have a fundraiser for Australian Farmers affected by the current drought. This will take place on Friday 12 October (Friday of the first week back after the holidays). Students are invited to dress up as a farmer on this day. Our Student Council will

go around to all classrooms on the morning to collect donations from students. For families who would like to make a more significant financial donation, we will also be accepting money at the front of our school from 8:15am-8:45am and 2:30pm-3:00pm on the day. All funds raised will be donated to Aussie Helpers, a charity who

assists farmers during these tough times. Thanks for your support.

Year 4 Camp Last week our Year 4 students enjoyed 3 days of fun activities at Midginbil Hill Camp. Before the students left I asked them to have lots of fun, to challenge themselves and try things they wouldn’t normally do and to look after each other. The feedback we’ve had from camp staff is that our students did all of those things and more! Thank

you to our teachers for their own time to provide this amazing opportunity for our kids and thank you to our students for the outstanding way they represented our school in the community.

Chess A huge congratulations to Max in Year 3 who represented our school in the recent Gold Coast Primary Interschool Chess Tournament. More than 900 students participated from schools across the Gold Coast. Max did an amazing job and he placed with a ribbon. Well done Max, we are very proud of you!

It’s been a busy term in the classrooms with preparation well under way for the Gilston Arts Night next term. Mrs Wilkes’ class 2N were busy building their 3D paper cities. Working in groups they were all responsible in bringing their city to life from the ground up. I think there may be some young architects in the making. Some very creative pieces were taking on a new design of their own. Ms McKenna’s class 4E continued on with their schaffa creations. This has been a work in progress, starting with a wooden door knob. Students have individually created their characters with a range of art and collage items. Be sure to come along and check out the wonderful creations from our Gilston students.

Convener - Nicole Meesen [email protected]

Gilston Gourmet... Nicole Meesen

I would like to start off by thanking all our volunteers for you time and effort throughout Term 3, however there are a couple of volunteers who deserve a special mention as they come in every week, sometimes twice a week, if I need more help and they are Hazel S, Cassie W and Amber B - Thankyou. Your time is appreciated. Thankyou to all those families who order tuckshop each day, each week and each month - thank you for your support. In Term 4, our ward wining tuckshop, will be doing another term of themed lunches. The theme will be "Healthy Fast Food Take Offs". For examples ham & cheese pockets, chicken flat bread sliders, beef and chicken nachos and burrito's, roast chicken and gravy rolls, deconstructed sushi and healthy salad subs just to name a few. These lunches will be on a Tuesday or Wednesday depending on which day I have more volunteers. I will advertise each week on our Gilston Gourmet Facebook page and in our school newsletter. Keep an eye out for these specials, it will be a nice way to finish the year off. If you child is having a birthday and you would like a class set of cupcakes or a class set of ice blocks, these are available through the tuckshop. We require 1 weeks notice and payment up front with cash or EFTPOS. To make a booking for cupcakes or ice blocks please see the tuckshop or call 0755012333. The cupcakes are $32 for a class set of ice cupcakes, and ice blocks prices start at $16 for a class set.

One last note, a reminder to all parents. If you order your child tuckshop and your child has any issues such as items missing a drink or didn't get a cookie, could you please tell them to come and see Miss Nicole. These problems can be fixed straight away. Each child is allowed to come up to the tuckshop, they just have to let their teacher or the teacher on duty know. Uniforms Reminder that we have selected sizes in our gabardine shorts that are only $8.00 each, and we have a couple of old style jackets in sizes 4 and 6 available at the tuckshop for $20 each, usually $40. What a full term we have had! Firstly a huge thank you to all volunteers from the Father’s Day stall, Trivia Night committee and all the volunteers and staff within the tuckshop. Without your contributions we would not be able to do what we do for our children and school community. We had a very successful Father’s Day stall and Trivia night this term. Thank you to everyone who donated to our Trivia Night and to all those who helped support the night. Lots of laughs had all round. Term 4 will also bring us our Colour Run, calendar and diary fundraiser. Happy and safe holidays to you all, P&C Exec committee.
