The funding to purchase the machines was raised by a group of bike riders who completed a massive ride to raise the $8,500 required. The riders commenced in Merimbula on 30 December 2017 and rode to the top of Mt Kosciusko and back to Merimbula. This is a huge ride, it took 34 hours and 20 minutes, without sleep to ride the 490km in distance and 10,000+m of climbing (that is a lot of hill!) Weather conditions were far from ideal and they encountered nocturnal animals that at times defied logic. This feat qualifies the boys entry into both the Hells 500 Everesting Hall of Fame and High Rouleurs Society. The riders consisted of Matt Williams, Jonas Anderberg and Paul Shelley from Chiltern, Ernie Pekar and Terry Behan from Sydney and Scott Melgaard from Albury. The boys were well supported by Trevor Gladstone and family members. They would like to make particular mention of the fantastic sponsors and everyone who made donations to enable to purchase of the machines. Chiltern and Barnawartha now have publicly accessible defibrillators

Chiltern and Barnawartha now have 4 publicly accessible Automated External Defibrillator (“AED”) machines, which are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

A recent study into defibrillators has found that patients in cardiac arrest in a public place were 62 per cent more likely to survive if a non-medical professional or bystander was the first person to defibrillate them (Ambulance Victoria, June 2016).

The 4 LIFEPAK machines are located at: Barnawartha Post Office, Chiltern Police Station, Chiltern Senior Citizens’ Centre and Chiltern Bowling Club. These machines are mounted to the external wall of the buildings, allowing access when needed, at all times of the day and night.

These are fantastic additions to support our small communities. The funding to purchase the machines was raised by a group of bike riders who completed a massive ride to raise the $8,500 required. The riders commenced in Merimbula on 30 December 2017 and rode to the top of Mt Kosciusko and back to Merimbula. This is a huge ride, it took 34 hours and 20 minutes, without sleep to ride the 490km in distance and 10,000+m of climbing (that is a lot of hill!) Weather conditions were far from

ideal and they encountered nocturnal animals that at times defied logic. Machines located at the IGA and football club are semi automatic, meaning you press a button to administer a shock and are not accessible outside their operating hours.

- they will NOT shock someone who doesn’t need it. (I would confidently put one on my own chest). - anyone can use them. You don’t need a qualification. There are simple instructions on the device to guide you on what to do, combined with voice prompts ensures that anyone is able to use them. - An AED is what will potentially bring someone back to life in a cardiac arrest situation. Not CPR. Early defibrillation is the key to survival. Any people/clubs that would like more information, I’m happy to organise someone from the CERT team to come and have a chat to you about how easy they are to use, and how important they are to the chain of survival.” Jane can be reached via email - [email protected].

What an amazing week at St Joseph’s Chiltern. It was an eventful week at St Joseph’s with many opportunities to interact with different community members. We celebrated our Feast Day on Monday 19th March with a whole school shared lunch and liturgy; on Tuesday we had Italian day where we travelled by bus to join St Mary’s in Rutherglen. We were treated to an Italian perfor-mance and gelato. On Wednesday our Year 4 students visited the Community Early Years Child-care - Chiltern Kindergarten, the students introduced themselves and assisted with their play based learning. On Thursday Evening we had our Family Sports Night it was a great turn out, the activities were well organised and proved to be a lot of fun with red team being the overall win-ners of the night. To end our week, on Friday we had a ‘Walk to school Day’ where lots of families meet us at Chiltern Park and walked to St Joseph’s and lastly we switched off all the lights and equipment to raise awareness for ‘Earth Hour’. What a week and we also managed to learn lots about ourselves, others and the world around us.

Another Yarn from Chiltern Spinners

Medieval Unicorns and Plant Dyeing

There is a 3 week break between meetings which covers the Easter period. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 12th April. In the meantime Rowena has produced another literary gem which coincides perfectly with a recent visit to the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney by 4 north east spinners and weavers. The visit was timed so they could view the set of 6 medieval tapestries titled The Lady and the Unicorn.

During the audio-visual presentation accompanying the exhibition there was some discussion of the plant dyes used to colour the wool. The strong blue was extracted from woad plants.

In her fictional story of the making of the tapestries (“The Lady and the Unicorn”), Tracy Chevalier wrote of the advances for marriage suffered by the daughter of the weaver and how repulsed she was by the stench whenever the woad dyer was nearby. Rowena’s book explains the smell.

“The dyer’s assistant in the art of dying wool” was written by James Haigh in 1778 and has been digitized as an authentic reproduction of the original text. The peasants of Abbigevois in France harvested the woad plant every 4 weeks when it had 6 leaves measuring 6” across. Once harvested the leaves were immediately ground to a fine paste using a millstone. “This is done quickly as the leaves ferment if left in a heap and soon rot with an intolerable stench.” The paste pile was left in the sun for 2 weeks to form a crust then opened and mixed well before being formed into round balls weighing a pound and a quarter.

These balls were left in the sun for 20 days until the crust turned black.

Look out for the second part of the dye preparation from the woad plant 200 years ago in the next

edition of The Grapevine.

AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS, Chiltern Branch

Our Emergency team members were put on ALERT before and during the recent bush fires in South-West Victoria and in NSW. Red Cross launched the Register.Find.Reunite service for people affected by the fires and we continue to urge people to maintain contact with their friends and family; and to use the service to either register their location or enquire about someone. Trained Red Cross teams are also providing psychological first aid for those have been affected by the fires and are working closely with local emergency services

In NSW 550 people left Tathra to take refuge in the Bega Showgrounds.

In Victoria

• 5 Relief Centres and provided psychological first aid to over 913 community members affected by the fires.

• 49 volunteers and staff have worked in the EOC, over 15 volunteers have worked in the SIC and over 39 volunteers have worked in the Regional Relief Centres

• over 360 people have been registered through RFR

• volunteers supported 7 well attended community meetings and provided support and care

Other news:

Five Australian Red Cross nurses have been honoured with the Florence Nightingale Award today for their “exceptional courage and devotion to the victims of armed conflict or natural disas-ter.” All five recipients have worked in complex and dangerous environments from South Sudan to Yemen to Sierra Leone to Afghanistan.

"Our Australian Red Cross nurses have played a critical role in responding to some of the world's biggest emergencies. They have helped children survive horrific injuries caused by weapons, cared for patients suffering with Ebola and saved lives with education on hygiene and disease prevention. They're colleagues or mentors to local health workers, often working under difficult and dangerous conditions" said Peter Walton, Director, International at Australian Red Cross. Anne Carey is a nurse who joined the Red Cross effort to contain the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone. She has also worked in Darfur, Sudan and in a refugee camp on the Sudan/Kenya border. Barbara McMaster and Catherine Salmon both worked as a surgical and head nurse providing critical care in some of the world's toughest armed conflicts in Afghanistan, Sudan and Yemen. Catherine Fry coordinated health care for children and their mothers in Darfur, Sudan. On top of providing health care across frontlines, Catherine also played a critical teaching role in her missions, including in Liberia, Uganda and Afghanistan. Ruth Jebb has coordinated a feeding clinic for thousands of malnourished children in Sudan and provided midwifery and intensive care in Cambodia and Chad, along with disaster relief after Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Ruth also helped tend to injured and ill people after the 2015 Nepal earthquakes. “For each of us, the time will come when we look back on our careers and our lives. We will reflect on what we have done. The decisions and choices we have made. We will think about our legacy, our contribution to others, to our families, our community and the world,” the Governor-General said at the awards.“For our Florence Nightingale Medal recipients, you will reflect with a pride greater than most. Because you have made a difference. These medals are testament to that.”

It is not too late to contribute to our Red Cross Appeal. There are collections in several businesses in Chiltern and Barnawartha, or donations can made by phone 1800 811 700, or at redcross.org.au These donations help us to help others

MOVIE BUFFS WANTED!

The Chiltern Lions Club are looking to form a new Chiltern Film Society/ Film Appreciation Group? to take over the running of the film nights that have been conducted very successfully over many years by the Chiltern Rutherglen Continuing Education Group who are now passing on the baton….

The films bring many people to town from far and wide, and gives an experience much greater than just going to the movies. It provides an environment to share film, food and conversation.

Chiltern’s Star Theatre provides a wonderful venue and it is envisaged to follow the same format as previously with the theme of classic Aus-sie movies, a BBQ tea in the Stables, with guest speakers and discus-sion followed by supper.

Anyone interested in being on a small committee to help organise the film nights under the Lions Club banner should contact Charlie Summerfield Ph 0357 261395

50th Wedding Anniversary Kevin and Faye Lappin

Long time Chiltern residents Kevin and Faye Lappin of

High Street Chiltern will celebrate their fiftieth

wedding anniversary on March 30th 2018.

Their wedding took place at Saint Andrew’s Uniting

Church on Saturday 30th March 1968 and was

attended by a large number of relatives and friends.

Faye wore a lace trimmed A-line gown complimented

by a short veil. She carried a fresh bouquet featuring

carnations. Her attendants, sister Heather, sister in

law Faye and cousin Marcelle wore empire line gowns

and carried flowers accented by burgundy ribbon.

Kevin’s best man was his brother Jack and groomsman

was Robert Anderson. Their reception was held at the Memorial Hall and catered for by the

famous Swimming Club committee. Music for the evening was provided by Nobby Cooper’s band.

Kevin and Faye spent their honeymoon touring southern New South Wales before returning to

live in Chiltern. Kevin was for many years the town baker and Faye taught at both Chiltern

Primary School and St Joseph’s School.

They have two sons Jason and Darren and four grandchildren who all live in Chiltern. Their fifty

years of marriage is certainly something to celebrate.

Walking Track Bird Hide

A few years ago the Lion’s Club of Chiltern went to a great deal of effort

and expense to create a Walking Track bordering the southern side of

Lake Anderson and around the football field exiting at Conness Street.

In keeping with the trend of visitors to the area many of whom are avid

birdwatchers and visited Chiltern for the explicit purpose of Bird

watching. This pastime encouraged many visitors to the town because of

the National and International reputation of being high on the list for rare birds.

The Lions in an attempt to foster this activity, which promoted Chiltern, constructed a “Bird

Hide” a low tower from which to observe or photograph our birds unseen. The “Bird Hide

unfortunately was a target for vandals and many repairs were carried out over time by the Lions.

It reached the stage recently where the integrity of the “Bird Hide” was in question. A recent

inspection of the construction revealed that it had been destroyed to the point it was no longer

safe or repairable. The Lions with the aid of a few locals have removed the construction and

cleaned the site in keeping with the environment.

It is a sad indictment that a few individuals with no respect for the town and no regard for the

community have caused this to happen.

Monday 10th April 2018

Dear Editor, Last week, a disappointing meeting was held at the Chiltern Hospital between INH CEO, Shane Kirk and 30 concerned citizens. The audience had been promised the results of the Health survey and a glimpse of the elusive Amalgamation Agreement of 2008. An INH board member apolo-gised for the lack of results of the survey which was bad enough but then to top it off, nobody got a chance to study the copy of the Agreement because it was held ever so tightly in Mr Kirk’s hand. Councillor Barbara Murdoch who was on the boards of Chiltern and INH at the time of amalgam-ation was uncharacteristically unable to clarify the audience’s confusion. It is clear to me that INH has no intention of ever again providing those excellent medical rooms for a doctor. I was saddened to see my former workplace stripped of furniture and fittings, most of which were stuffed into the former treatment room. It now seems that INH's actions will render Chiltern the only major town in the Indigo Shire to be without a doctor. This is very sad. I walked past the gutted kitchen too. At least they left the floorboards. Official vandalism seems an apt description. In the audience there were three elderly members of the original Bush Nurs-ing Hospital board who had travelled long distances to Chiltern for the meeting. I cannot imagine the depth of their disappointment on listening to the jargon from the Rutherglen boffins now in charge of the destiny of Chiltern Hospital which was built for the community by the sacrifices of these great people. Chiltern citizens, our politicians and our Indigo Shire councillors must now stand up and prevent this tragedy from ever happening. Graeme Banks Chiltern

Dear Editor Because false representation of ones self can become epidemic if not addressed, I have chosen to use the media of Chiltern Grapevine to publicly right a false representation of myself that was in my opinion unintentional, never the less happened. I wish to make it clear to those in attendance at Tuesday mornings talk with the CEO of Indigo North Health, the statement that was made in relation to me resigning from the then Chiltern Bush Nursing Hospital Board was not true. I did not resign because of the financial issues, I resigned due to a conflict of interest between myself and another board member. I was not on the Board at the time of Amalgamation. Trust this sets a wrong to a right. Suzanne Grant
