We started with a very well attended Flotilla meeting on May 1 st . Our speaker was LCDR Carmen Bazzano who is the District Command Center Supervisor. His powerpoint presentation was fascinating and instructive. District 7 deals with more SAR cases than any other district in the Coast Guard and by a long way. We saw pictures of all the different Ships, Boats, Aircraft and Helicopters, including the new squadron of armed helicopters at work, and many other pictures that kept everybody glued to their seats. Question time had to be finally curtailed because of time constraint, but we enjoyed every minute of it. The members who stayed home really missed something. Then the next day came the Air/Sea Show in which 23 of our members were actually involved with boats, Cat’s I and Radio. Many more tried to participate but due to engine failures and flooding were unable to make it. I guess that’s boats for you. They were all as disappointed at not making it as we were at not having them there, but a great effort by all concerned. Three days of 12 hours a day for Endeavor, and China Clipper was out there for four days. Then came NSBW. Ron Dillon organized four Proclamations from the cities of Highland Beach, Delray Beach, Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton and several members from the Flotilla showed up at each presentation with the VFC and myself to receive them. After that came the “Deerfield Blowout”. Tom Sutherland provided his boat “Holodeck” for the annual exercise with the Sheriff’s Department helicopter, Ocean Rescue and Fire Rescue. At the same time other members were manning the NSBW Booth on shore, and Tony Elvas’s crew of Vessel Examiners were doing their job in several different locations. While all this is going on we had other members manning Cat’s I at Station Lauderdale. Two days before the “Change of Watch” for Captain Kerski which was to be held at Station Lauderdale, I received an email asking me to be one of the two people to represent the Auxiliary in the 36 member Honor Platoon. An honor to Flotilla 36, I accepted immediately, but it has been many a long day since I drilled, so I had to spend a few minutes practicing “about face” maneuvers as these were slightly different from the “about turn” maneuvers in the RAF. However, everything went well during the inspection by the outgoing Captain Kerski and the incoming Captain Maes. From The Helm – Alick Elliott – Flotilla Commander 36 ([email protected] )

The Senior Officer present was Admiral Carmichael who congratulated Captain Mark Kerski on his past achievements, and welcomed Captain Maes into Group Miami. All this took place during the departure of several cruise ships from Port Everglades and on completion of the ceremonies a buffet was enjoyed by all. Our Piper Mark David provided music for the occasion. Sunday the 25th was another excellent picnic by our 4th Cornerstone Richard Dunne, fortunately arranged in the Morikami Pavilion, so when it rained on us not even our spirits were dampened. Thanks Richard and Assistant Chef Jerry. Today is Memorial Day and 7 of us went to the Boca Raton Memorial Day celebrations, a first time for me, but I found it very interesting and even got to say a few words (very few). After the ceremonies we retired to the American Legion for lunch. On a more serious note, we are not accomplishing our share of patrols. At the end of April according to Auxdata we have done about 64 % of estimated quota. The main reason is we only have 12 vessels that have done any patrols and four of those have done the bulk of them. I shall be calling Coxswains in the very near future and asking you personally to support me, at least one patrol a month and one every 3 weeks if you can. Those of you who have boats and are not coxswains or have not yet made your boat a Coast Guard Facility I want to help you do that. (Boats can now become facilities in any month of the year). We are putting together a team who will help you prepare your boat for inspection and then a coxswain and competent crew member who will be willing to accompany you on patrol until you feel confident to go yourself if you are already a coxswain, or help you to complete your training to become a coxswain. In this way we can increase our active boats and thus our number of patrols.

On June 14 and 15 a representative of the Director’s office (Diraux) will be at our base to take pictures for our new ID cards. There will also be members from Division 3 and 5 present to have their picture taken. I am asking for volunteers to

assist in this undertaking. We would like some people to guard the gate so that the cars of the Auxiliarists can come and go. It would be greatly appreciated if we have enough people so that one of our members will not have to guard the gate for more than 1 hour. Help will also be needed inside the building to help with the forms and answer questions etc. Remember to wear your uniform for the picture. The hours will be June 14 1000 – 1500 and June 15 1000 – 1200. Coast Guard Station Ft. Lauderdale has asked us to be ever vigilant. They requested we observe all vessels coming in and out of Boca Inlet. Anything that seems unusual should be reported to the station. Remember skippers; the inlet is now a no wake zone. Sandy and I would like to wish all the Fathers in the flotilla a happy Father’s Day. May all your wishes come true and may your kids behave themselves. Miracles do happen!

Digital cameras now outsell traditional film cameras, but if users are simply storing their images on their hard drives, they’re barely scratching the surface of this still new form of photography. “Short Courses” website offers a quick primer on editing digital photos. If

you find yourself wishing you could tweak an occasional picture because of poor exposure or an unsightly object, now you can. Try the website listed below.

Public Education Andrea Rutherfoord, FSO-PE

For National Safe Boating week, we provided a classroom for Boca Raton Police Department (Marine Patrol) officer Trent (Ghenz) Kosova to teach a Personal Watercraft safety class on May 21. Many of you know Ghenz, who regularly attends our BS&S graduations to talk about local laws, and this was another opportunity to collaborate with law enforcement to make the waters a safer place. Underway: The Advanced Coastal Navigation class is finishing up, with the final exam scheduled for June 3. Congratulations to the auxiliary members who are finishing this AUXOP course! Coming up: Registration for the summer Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) class will be held on June 3 (7-8 pm), and it will meet on Tuesday evenings until the end of July. If you or your family or friends are interested in attending our public educations classes, please feel free to call me.

Publications Tom Sutherland, FSO-PB ([email protected])

On May 26, I attended the Boca Raton Memorial Day service at the Boca Raton cemetery for the first time. If you have never attend this Memorial to our fallen soldiers, I urge you to attend next years ceremony. The ceremony was very emotional and made you proud to be an American. In this issue of the Log, I have dedicated a full page of pictures from the

memorable ceremony. Oh Yes, the Bagpipes were awesome!

Secretary / Records Connie Sprake, FSO-SR ([email protected])

Towards the end of this Log, are the minutes of last months general meeting. If you have any questions about the minutes please feel free to email me at the above address.

Please join the Staff in wishing Pat Feighery a speedy recovery from injuries

he sustained in a serious traffic accident on Sunday May 25th on I-95. He is out of the hospital and at home on the mend.

This is a reminder that our little store will only be open from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM on the night of our general meeting. Once the meeting starts we will be closed. If any member wants anything between meetings, just call me at home 498-4863 and I will let you know when I will be at the base to help you. We will try in every way to help you get what you

want, but remember that we are not always around when you need something. I now have samples in stock of the PFD that is web material. They will be on special orders only and must be paid for before an order is placed. They come in to sizes only: (Small/ Medium and Large/Ex-Large). Come take a look, they are really cool.

Public Affairs Ronald Dillion, FSO-PA ([email protected])

Before looking ahead to June’s agenda, I would like to recognize those who made the many events during May so successful. This was first opportunity I had to attend and participate in this year’s Air and Sea Show held May 1-4. I had

the pleasure of crewing aboard Alick Elliot’s “Endeavor” on Fri. and Art Makenian’s “China Clipper” Thurs. Sat. & Sun. Thank you both for a wonderful experience. On behalf of our flotilla our Commander, Alick Elliott, accepted proclamations from Boca Mayor Steve Abrams, Delray Beach Mayor Jeff Perlman, Highland Beach Mayor Tom Reid and Deerfield Beach Mayor Albert Capellini at their respective City Council meetings, each declaring May 17-23, 2003 as National Safe Boating Week ( NSBW ) in their cities. I would like to personally thank Mike and Sandy Gardner, Pat Feighery, Andrea Rutherfoord, Tony Elvas, Dick Azzarito, Hal Womersley, Mark David, Connie Trifletti, Mark and Marie Thompson, Jerry and Gail Edelman and Jerry Rispoli for their support and attendance at these City Council meetings. We were well represented at the Delray Beach Affair recently. Tom Kegan, Bob Hershey and Cass Collins promoted AUX Educational information and Vessel Exam at our Flotilla’s tented booth at this three day, mostly wet, event. Thank you. The Deerfield Beach Blow-Out, May 16,17 & 18, was a terrific event both on land and at sea. At Sea-Tom Sutherland and his fine crew participated in a simulated boat fire with live helicopter and beach ocean rescue teams coming to their aid. On Land- our booth provided AUX educational and vessel safety exam information to the public. Thank you Capt. Tom and your crew and to our land team of Tom Kegan, Pat Feighery, Tony Elvas, Connie Trifletti and Joe Dinmore. A very special thank you goes to Jerry Edelman, who participated in arranging, setting up and manning our booth all day, everyday, from 10-5! Well done to one and all. During May and in connection with NSBW, vessel examinations have been increased and extended this year beyond the May 17-23 period to the end of June. This is to allow for a greater number of vessel exams. Under the direction of our FSO-VE Tony Elvas and his team of examiners we have conducted expanded vessel exams in Knowles Park, Lake Ida and Silver Pond Park. Also under Tony’s direction, 600 letters were mailed with monthly billing statements to the boat owners at Pennell’s Marine and Marina One, advising them that on Saturday, June 14th, and Saturday, June 21st respectively, teams of examiners will be at these facilities offering free safety inspections and promoting our educational programs. Tony advised me that he is encouraged by the enthusiasm of the management of these marinas and may offer regular quarterly inspections in the future, if examiner staff is available. Great job, Tony! Special thanks to examiners Martin Jaffe, Dave De Boben, Dick Azzarito, just to name a few, for a great effort Despite a healthy dose of liquid sunshine, our Memorial Day picnic on Sunday May 25th, was also a fabulous success. Thanks to Richie Dunne, Sandy Gardner Jerry Edelman and the many helpers, bagpiper and attendees that made this event so successful. A Memorial Day tribute was held on Monday, May 26th, at Boca Cemetery, arranged by our very own George Cousins. Commander Alick Elliott made an eloquent address and, in addition to George Cousins, was supported by Tom Kegan, Tony Elvas, Jerry Edelman, Richard Celestino and Tom Sutherland. I am told it was a very moving tribute that made us all proud to be American on the occasion remembering those who gave everything for our freedom. Lest we forget the many who use Personal Water Craft (PWC) and our responsibility to help provide educational safety and Vessel exam information, a special all day event was held on May 28th providing information to the public and media. Support was provided by Mike Gardner, Tom Kegan, Andrea Rutherfoord, Connie Trifetti, Richie Dunne, Tony Elvas, Jerry Edelman at our tented booth from noon ‘til 9 pm. Thank you again, for your time and support makes our promotional activities possible. In order to perform our key roll in that of supporting the regular Coast Guard in the promotion of boating safety through education and vessel safety exams, your active participation in the flotilla’s efforts are needed for all of us to be a part of a winning and positive effort, an effort we swore to uphold when we joined the Auxiliary. Please let me know if you are able to help in our efforts to promote our safety message. My email is [email protected] or phone 561 988-8330 here in Boca. Thank you in advance for your support and comments.

TAPS

We in the United States have all heard the haunting song, "Taps." It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes. But, do you know the story behind the song? If not,

I think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginnings.

Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harris's Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the

narrow strip of land.

During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and

bring the stricken man back for medical attention.

Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment. When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly

caught his breath and went numb with shock.

In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate

Army.

The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted. The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral.

The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician.

The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of

musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform. This wish was granted.

The haunting melody, we now know as "Taps" ... used at military funerals was born. The words are ... Day is done ... Gone the sun ...From the lakes ... From the hills ... >From the sky .. All is well ...Safely rest ... God is nigh ... Fading light ... Dims the sight ... And a star ... Gems the sky...Gleaming bright ... From afar .. Drawing nigh ... Falls the night ...Thanks and praise ... For our days .. Neath the sun ....

Neath the stars ... Neath the sky ... As we go ... This we know ... God is nigh...

REMEMBER THOSE LOST AND HARMED WHILE SERVING THEIR COUNTRY. And also those presently serving in the Armed Forces.
