WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY Yesterday, on World Suicide Prevention Day, Governor Pete Ricketts encour-aged Nebraskans to monitor their mental well-being and to be on the lookout
for signs of mental distress in loved ones. “The last couple of years have cre-ated a significant amount of disruption to our lives here in Nebraska. Re-cently, the pandemic has placed more distance between us than usual,” said Gov. Ricketts. “Dealing with the stress of the pandemic can be difficult. We need to combat the mental impact of the virus just as rigorously as its physical threat.” “Like any other health emergency such as a heart attack or stroke, it’s important to address a mental health crisis quickly and effectively,” said Sheri Dawson, director of the Division of Behavioral Health. “Suicidal thoughts are a symptom of a mental health crisis. By simply talking about suicide and mental health, we can achieve a cultural shift where we actively encourage Nebraskans to share thoughts of suicide and reach out for help.” The Ne-braska State Suicide Prevention Coalition (NSSPC) is another helpful resource for Nebraskans interested in suicide prevention. NSSPC is a volunteer-led group comprised of suicide survivors, public and private agencies, and other Nebraskans dedicated to preventing suicides. NSSPC has a website with information about suicide prevention, along with contact information for local
suicide prevention coalitions.
ON PATRIOT DAY, WE REMEMBER Governor Pete Ricketts issued the following statement in observance of Patriot Day, which is celebrated on September 11, 2020: “On Patriot Day, we re-member the Americans who perished in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Flight 93. We also commemorate the heroism of the first responders and other citizens who courageously risked their lives to save their fellow Americans.” “No one old enough to remember 9/11 will ever forget that day. In celebrating Patriot Day, we make sure our children know the story of September 11th and gain an appreciation for the men and women who bravely responded to the attack. As we recall their selfless sacri-fice, let’s commit to putting others first and seeking to foster greater peace so our communities and families can grow and flourish.” Flags are at half-staff across the state this week to honor the passing of Lincoln Police Department Investigator Mario Herrera, and they will remain at half-staff on Friday in observance of Patriot Day.

As the regular season approaches this weekend in the ACC and Big
12, a pair of Big Ten football coaches spoke out Thursday and criti-
cized conference leaders for what the coaches say is a lack of critical
information and leadership in the month since the league announced
the postponement of its fall football season. Ohio State coach Ryan
Day and Penn State coach James Franklin each issued stinging re-
bukes of Commissioner Kevin Warren and the Big Ten Council of
Presidents and Chancellors on Thursday and were pointed in taking
issue not with the decision to postpone in the first place, but the lack
of communication and leadership since."While I understand the Big
Ten Conference's decision to postpone the football season because
of health and safety considerations, the communication of informa-
tion from the Big Ten following the decision has been disappointing
and often unclear," Day wrote. "However, we still have an opportu-
nity to give our young men what they have worked so hard for: a
chance to safely compete for a national championship this fall."
