A breakdown by age includes: 0 to 19 31; 20 to 29 10; 30 to 39 13; 40 to 49 12; 50 to 59 13; 60 to 69 9; 70 to 79 8; 80 and over 4. The total number of cases is 4,325. SWNPHD also received confirma- tion of one additional death due to COVID-19. Vaccination rates across the health district have reached 47%. This number includes fully vacci- nated as well as partially vaccinated individuals. Health Director Myra Stoney commented, “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed frequently over the past year and a half. Our goal at SWNPHD has always been to help people make informed decisions about their health. Sometimes we get caught in political crosshairs, but we focus on providing information that is evidence-based. SWNPHD remains committed to recommending guidelines that are supported by quality data for the duration of the pan- demic.” Stoney continues, “As much as we would like to be done with COVID-19, it is still a threat to people in our communities. It is time to think of others around you and take steps to protect your community.” NEBRASKA’S STATE EPIDEMIOLOGIST BEING SUED Nebraska's acting state epidemiologist is being sued by a Utah attorney after he denied her request for an unredacted validation report regarding COVID-19 tests administered by Test Nebraska. At issue is whether the blacked-out information qualifies as trade secrets or should be released under public-records laws. In the lawsuit filed in Lancaster County District Court, Suzette Rasmussen's attorney, Andre Barry, said: "The public has an interest in knowing whether the COVID-19 tests provided by Nomi Health are (or were) reliable or accurate as claimed, and whether the state's con- tract with Nomi Health was worth the cost." In April 2020, near the start of the pandemic, Nebraska announced a $26.9 million, no-bid contract with Nomi Health, a Utah company, to establish mobile testing centers and pro- vide up to 540,000 tests over six months, with an option to pay more for additional testing after that. By the time Test Nebraska stopped testing July 18, 2021, the program had cost the state about $45 million and re- sulted in the completion of roughly 800,000 COVID-19 tests, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. MPCC IMPERIAL CAMPUS OFFERS NEW CLASS The Mid-Plains Community College Imperial Campus will offer a class on “Fireground Mistakes and How to Avoid Them” next week. The class is scheduled for 6:30-9:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the campus, 1324 Broadway St., in Imperial. It will be led by Tim Zehnder, fire science coordinator for MPCC. Firefighter deaths hover around 100 every year and many more are injured, according to Zehnder. He’s hoping to change that with classes such as the one in Imperial. The interactive course will incorporate videos and images from actual events that have occurred around the country. Topics will include use of seatbelts, driving, ignoring size-up, building con- struction, changing fire conditions, incident command systems, standard operating procedures, accountability, safety equipment, use of resources, communication issues, ventilation, absence of a safety officer or rapid in- tervention team, lack of training and physical fitness among many other things. The fee for the class is $20. Those interested in registering can do so online at mpcc.edu/bce, by calling (308) 882-5972 or by emailing [email protected].
