Funding for Canadian Lands Surveys on-reserve has not been available for a while now, however the need still exists and the

cost has continually increased. We are attempting to gather a list of names (status members holding Certificates of Possession) that currently own land on-reserve and have some interest in a survey

completed on their property.

We are gathering names only to try and gauge what needs there are (if any), and to research into the possibilities of a

discounted rate for these surveys. Property locations do not need to be identified at this time,

just names of those interested and own land.

If you are interested, please provide your name to either Jane Commanda or Dan Sarazin at (613) 625-2800 ext. #231.

1) It is the month of November (whitefish month) Adikameg kizis. The preschoolers and toddlers are learning about the harvest season of vegetables and hunting moose and celebrating the fall season.

2) Magoshewin—Fall feast this is done at the end of October and our elders used the (kinooje) pike to do this feast. It is the time to do memorials and feast our ancestors and the ones who passed in the spirit world.

Once again this year the Activator Program will be providing an After School Skating Program every Thursday for children between the Grades of 1 to 8 at the Eganville Arena.

The Skating Program will start Thursday October 6, 2011; from 4:00pm to 5:00pm.

In order for children to participate in the After School Skating Program, a registration form must be filled out and returned to the Front Desk at the Administration Office. All children are required to have

a pair of skates and a helmet to participate.

Parents will need to be at the Eganville Arena by 5:10pm to pick up their child. The Activator Program will not be able to provide rides home for your child due to liability concerns.

We ask that you do not send any money with you child to purchase snacks at the canteen. However, please provide an extra snack in their lunch.

It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that the school & school bus drivers and monitors have your written permission for your child to be dropped off at the arena. A list will be provided to the school bus drivers and monitors of the

children registered to participate in the After School Skating Program. If your child’s name is not on the list, the school bus drivers and the monitors have informed us that your child will not be dropped off for the After School Skating Program.

We are seeking individuals interested in being on our temporary help list for Carpentry, Light Labour,

Heavy Labour, Cleaning, Clerical, Harvest and any other skills and abilities we may be able to use.

Sometimes a short term assignment can lead to something longer and sometimes we can give

referrals to outside agencies looking for workers. The temp help list is also available for those people

in receipt of EI.

Tennisco Manor and the Day Care manage their own temp help lists so to be on these lists you

must contact them directly.

HOW TO SPEND LESS MONEY

FOR HEALTHIER FOOD

“You want me to eat healthy, but can’t afford

that stuff!” “I can’t buy all those fruits and

vegetables that you say I’m to!” This I heard in

every diabetes clinic across Canada, and reflects

the very common belief that “healthy” food is

more expensive then “regular” food. This belief

is shared not only by clients/patients but many

health care providers as well.

Luckily, it is possible to get healthier food on a

budget. The trick is to buy ingredients instead of

prepared and convenience foods. Yes, this takes

some extra time and work: you need to plan a

menu, write a shopping list and prepare and cook

the food. The end result is worth it though; you

end up with more food that is lower in salt and fat

and includes more of the foods that our bodies

need to stay healthy.

ingredients before we head to the Foodland in

Eganville. At the store, we will divide into

groups and practice choosing less expensive

foods and see which team can come up with

the “best” groceries for the smallest amount

of money.

HOW TO SPEND LESS MONEY

FOR HEALTHIER FOOD

“You want me to eat healthy, but can’t afford

that stuff!” “I can’t buy all those fruits and

vegetables that you say I’m to!” This I heard in

every diabetes clinic across Canada, and reflects

the very common belief that “healthy” food is

more expensive then “regular” food. This belief

is shared not only by clients/patients but many

health care providers as well.

Luckily, it is possible to get healthier food on a

budget. The trick is to buy ingredients instead of

prepared and convenience foods. Yes, this takes

some extra time and work: you need to plan a

menu, write a shopping list and prepare and cook

the food. The end result is worth it though; you

end up with more food that is lower in salt and fat

and includes more of the foods that our bodies

need to stay healthy.

To share ideas and learn how to get more for

less, join us on November 14, 2011 in the round

room at Minopimadiz-I Gamik (Health Centre)

at 10:00 am. Julia Reddy and Sue Crigger,

the Renfrew County Diabetes Outreach Team,

along with me, your local Diabetes Nurse

Educator, will be spending some time talking

about meal planning and using less expensive

ingredients before we head to the Foodland in

Eganville. At the store, we will divide into

groups and practice choosing less expensive

foods and see which team can come up with

the “best” groceries for the smallest amount

of money.

This event is open to all members of the

community, but we ask that you please arrange

for own transportation to and from the store.

Dear Parents of Opeongo Students: The school year is off to a good start especially with our new start times, and hunting season is fast approaching. Here is some information that I hope is beneficial to parents and students. Cafeteria: We currently do not have a service provider at Opeongo, therefore we have no cafeteria. It is very important that students are packing a lunch, as our brains do not function well without nourishment. I have a microwave at student’s disposal to heat food, and emergency supplies available in my office. But I cannot stress enough that students must have some nourishment in order to support their learning. Attendance: A reminder that attendance is very important. Students should have a Dr.s note, dentist or legal documentation if they are away for an appointment and present it upon arrival back to school. If you know that your child will be away please contact the school at 613-735-7587 extension 200 to notify us. This helps our secretarial staff keep up to date records. Hunting: If a student is to be away, please send a note with dates and or call me at extension 209 and let me know. Students are aware of the attendance policy. Students should be advising their teachers and collecting the work they will be missing as it is their responsibility as young adults to keep up with their studies. Parent Interviews will be held on Thursday October 20th. Our first end of term marks will be on November 9th, which is during the deer hunting season, so students need to have all assignments completed to have a positive mark at mid term. Community Service Hours: Students must have 40 hours of volunteer hours in order to get their high school diploma. I encourage parents to encourage your child to get these hours done before they get to their graduating year. Students will not be able to graduate with out these hours. It could affect their application to college or university when it comes to their future plans. Forms are available in the school office. Graduates: Students applying to College or University will be starting to apply at the end of November. Please sit down and discuss your child’s future. Any questions please do not hesitate to call me. I will be posting information hopefully each month in our newsletter about upcoming and important events.

CERTAIN GROUND BEEF PRODUCTS MAY CONTAIN PIECES OF METAL

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Sobeys Inc. are warning the public not to consume the ground beef products described below as these products may contain metal pieces. These products were sold at one Sobeys store, Nova Scotia. The following in-store packed ground beef products with a "Packaged On" date of OC 31,11 are affected by this alert.

Sobeys Customer Service at: 1-888-944-0442 CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday). Low Pathogenicity H7 avian influenza virus detected in wild birds The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed a low pathogenicity H7 avian influenza virus in wild birds in central and western Canada. The birds were sampled through Canada’s Inter-Agency Wild Bird Influenza Survey, which serves as an early warning system designed to detect avian influenza viruses circulating in the wild that could be transmitted to domestic poultry. Low pathogenicity influenza viruses commonly circulate in the wild bird population with little or no impact on the health of wild birds or people. However, H5 and H7 avian influenza viruses are known to have the ability to mutate from low pathogenicity to highly pathogenic forms once introduced into domestic poultry, potentially causing high rates of disease and mortality in birds. The following key biosecurity measures can help protect poultry health: Do not allow poultry or their food and water to have contact with wild birds -- particularly ducks and

other wild waterfowl, which are known to be reservoirs for avian influenza viruses. Control movements of people, animals, equipment and vehicles on your property. If you hunt wild birds, make sure your hands, clothing and footwear are clean before handling your domestic poultry or entering premises where poultry is kept. Observe your animals daily for signs of disease. If you suspect your birds are sick, you should immediately contact a veterinarian, the provincial ministry of agriculture, or a local CFIA office. 1-800-442-2342.

Consumer Product Recalls Toulouse-LapTrec Magnetic Sketchboards

Full Product Description: This recall involves the Toulouse-LapTrec magnetic sketchboard, which has a white plastic writing surface bordered by either a red or brown plastic frame, and has a bean bag type backing. The sketch board has four animal shapes across the top - a rabbit, dog, cat and duck - and the multicoloured magnetic pen is affixed to the front of the sketchpad. The model number BX1026 (red frame) or BX1027 (brown frame) can be found on a paper wrapper that comes with the product at the time it was purchased. This recall only involves four batches with the codes: 041210; 070110; 082010; 120610. These codes are etched on the top right hand corner at the back of the item.

Hazard Identified: The magnetic tip can separate from the pen, posing a choking hazard for young children. Battat has received 19 reports of the magnetic tip separating from the pen. No injuries have been reported. Consumers should immediately take recalled magnetic sketchboards away from children and contact Maison Joseph Battat Ltée. to request a pre-paid mailer to return the toy for free replacement product.
