Pow Wow Etiquette
A Pow Wow is a sacred cultural activity and many newcomers to a Pow Wow don't always understand the meaning and importance of the event. Below is a list of 'Do's and Don'ts' to be aware of during the ceremony. These are fairly general rules and will apply to any Pow Wow event regardless of the Nation. Please endeavour to follow these rules whenever possible.
Photographers: Please note that there are times during the Pow Wow celebration that photographs are NOT permitted. Neither are audio recordings or the use of motion picture cameras. Please pay attention to the MC, he will let you know when you are not permitted to use these types of equipment. Please honour this request. Many ceremonies during a Pow Wow are sacred and must not be recorded. Also take note that some people may not want to be photographed. Please respect this. ABSOLUTELY NO ALCOHOL, DRUGS & PETS Anyone who appears under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be asked to leave the Pow Wow site. Pets are not permitted on the Pow Wow grounds. The Pikwàkanagàn Pow Wow Committee is NOT responsible for any accidents, personal loss, injury or damage. Pow Wow Etiquette: 1. Allow Elders and disable people to sit in areas designed for them, with a family member or companion. 2. Allow dancers to be on the benches/chairs immediately surrounding the dance area. 3. Honour songs should be respected standing and removing hats without Eagle feathers is appreciated. 4. Please obtain permission from individuals for photo approval. 5. Please do not stand in front of others, this shows respect for others. 6. Please take direction from the MC and Pow Wow Elder. 7. Requests or direction is taken to the MC or Pow Wow Committee. 8. The Grand Entry is considered sacred; the influence of drugs or alcohol is not acceptable for any participant. 9. Appropriate clothing is mandatory in the dance area and throughout the Pow Wow grounds. 10. Pets are not permitted on the grounds. Unless they are seeing eye dogs. 11. A woman who is on her time, is not allowed in the dance area. 12. Photographs are not permitted during Grand Entry, Honour Songs and Retiring of the Flags unless stated. 13. The drum arbor or drum pit is designated for drummers and singers only. 14. Please, keep the Pow Wow ground clean. 15. Caring for Mother Earth is a very important teaching for everyone.
Please respect our Grandfather Rock, do not sit on him.

Annual Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn
Traditional Pow Wow
Each year Pikwàkanagàn welcomes hundreds of
dancers, numerous drum groups and thousands of
spectators to celebrate Algonquin culture at our
traditional Pow Wow. It is held on the third weekend in
August.
Visitors are attracted to our dance, songs, drumming
and experiencing an Algonquin cultural tradition. There
is also opportunity to view and purchase unique items
at our many vendors selling: jewelry, crafts, art,
clothing, beadwork, leather purses, regalia, drums,
CD’s, dreamcatchers, moccasins and many other items.
Another attraction is the variety of food vendors offering Indian Tacos, native foods and other treats.
Please remember that this is a ceremony. The songs
that are sung and the dances that are danced are prayers
to the Creator. The Grand Entry is a ceremony, so is the
lighting of the Sacred Fire. Many people will approach
the Spiritual Leader for prayers for their health or that of their family.
Days prior to the celebration a Sacred Fire is lit and
remains ablaze by volunteers for four straight days. An
Evening Social is held on Friday and festivities include
the initiation of new dancers and new regalia.
The Grand Entry begins at 12:00 noon on both
Saturday and Sunday.
Please remember that this is a ceremony. The songs
that are sung and the dances that are danced are prayers
to the Creator. The Grand Entry is a ceremony, so is the
lighting of the Sacred Fire. Many people will approach
the Spiritual Leader for prayers for their health or that
of their family.
There are rules that govern a Pow Wow as well. All
dancing revolves clockwise from the entrance, situated
in the east, around the central arbour. Carrying flags
and staffs in the Grand Entry is an honour. Songs are
sung for fallen Veterans and for those returning from
battle. The flags and staffs are retired each day at sunset.

CHANGES TO IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, children and adolescents will require proof of immunization against meningococcal disease, pertussis (whooping cough), and varicella (chicken pox) to attend school. (Note: Varicella immunization is only a requirement for children born in 2010 or later.) This is in addition to the existing requirements for proof of immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, and rubella.
The number of required doses of tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, and mumps vaccines has been updated to align with current clinical guidelines.
All changes to the immunization requirements for school attendance align with Ontario’s existing publicly funded immunization schedule. Children and adolescents who have received all recommended vaccines per the immunization schedule will not require any further immunizations.
These changes are being made to improve the health and safety of Ontario’s schoolchildren. The changes will help protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks in schools.
GIANT HOG WEED
The highly toxic Giant Hogweed is becoming more abundant in Southern and Central Ontario. It can be identified by its white umbrella-shaped flowers, sharp edged leaves, firm green stem, which is striped with dark red and its white coarse hair that grow to the base of the stem. This weed is a part of the carrot family and a perennial meaning that it blooms in late spring to mid-summer. Like any invasive weed it spreads and grows quickly on roadsides, in ditches, and by streams usually in old fields and/or open woodlands.
Although this weed is not toxic to livestock it can cause serious injuries to humans if handled improperly. If one is exposed to Giant Hogweed the follows steps should be followed. First, if exposed to the clear watery sap, wrap up the affected area to block out sunlight as sunlight triggers the toxins. Next, wash off the sap with soapy hot water as soon as possible. The affected area cannot be exposed to sunlight for at least 48 hours and must be kept covered. If the area is exposed to sunlight and a rash or painful blisters appear seek immediate medical attention. If improperly treated, the toxins that are present in the sap can cause severe burns to the skin. Some say that this weed can cause permanent blindness when in contact with eyes, but there is no research to prove this theory.
If you come in contact with Giant Hogweed please do not hesitate to call the Health Center at 613-625-2259 and speak to Joanne Whiteduck, Community Health Representative.
School and Bus Transportation Registration Education Services will require current contact information, addresses, emergency contact information and allergies.
If you have moved recently into the community, you must be granted residency status through
Membership, before your child is able to access transportation. School starts September 2, 2014.
Bus transportation schedules will be mailed two weeks prior to school starting date.
