As a result, after Sept. 30, 2010, Sailors, their spouses, reservists, delayed person- nel, and retirees will not have the option of using the NCLC program to prepare for taking or retaking tests such as ASVAB, SAT, ACT, GED. They will not be able to prepare for other person- al and professional goals. Still the NCLC staff remains committed to providing the same high level of service and educa- tion throughout the current contract year. The focus remains on the success of students. It is important to maxi- mize the scheduling of the program so that as many students as possible are given the opportunity to benefit from the NCLC ser- vices while the opportunity is still available. Please note that due to the NCLC program ending on Sept. 30, openings for taking student enrollments are only good through that date. Do not hesitate to enroll soon! Actually most chil- dren don’t like change at all and they show it in their in behavior. Kids who used to be calm may become rebellious and kids who were active may become withdrawn. They may regress to young- er behavior such as bed- wetting or thumb sucking. There are things that you can do to help them with the transition of a parent going to sea: Before leaving the service member can: Give the child some- thing personal to keep; Give the child a picture of the parent with the child; Leave a video tape read- ing a story to the child or leaving a special message; Write letters in advance of leaving for spouse to give to the child periodically; Put candy kisses in a jar to count down the number of days gone. Children can: Decorate a pillow case for his parent to take with him Give father a picture to take Make return gifts and banner to welcome home Eat one candy kiss a night for dessert from the jar and think about parent Go to FRG meeting with remaining parent Talk to a trusted adult about feelings View the “Big Submarine” or the “Big Aircraft Carrier” video Attend a deployment group at school The spouse at home can: Listen to child’s feeling and fears Be honest about changes at home: rules, chores etc. Keep child busy with activity Have child participate in sending items in a mail drop for parent Have a regular time to talk about the other parent. It is important that the service member not tell the oldest son that he is the “man of the houseî while he is gone. This puts too much pressure on the child. The events will be at the NORWESTER Activity Center for NAS Whidbey on Monday, June 14, the Navy Commons complex for NS Everett on Tuesday, June 15, the Concourse (by the gym) at NBK, Bremerton on Wednesday, June 16, and in front of the gym at NBK- Bangor on Thursday, June 17. All events will occur from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at each location. Please come and explore all the voluntary education options that Navy College has to offer. Participants include members of the Navy College Distance Learning Partnership and the Servicemen’s Opportunity College (SOC) networks of schools. Everybody knows that deployment is hard on chil-dren. Actually most chil-dren don’t like change at all and they show it in their in behavior.
