Dear Parents, We have had a wonderful week at Kew College and as I write the building is resounding to the boom of the Samba drums in the Hall and cheers of children in the playground practising their arch- ery skills. You will receive a full report on the School Birthday with Kew News next Wednesday, but so far the atmosphere is one of pure joy, with the sun shining down on us too. We were thrilled on Monday to receive a visit from Deirdre Ryan, an Olympic high-jump athlete from Dublin, who demonstrated her extraordinary skills to the children in the playground and also let them have a go. The children were very excited to watch this at close quarters and will no doubt follow her progress in this summer’s Games with interest. On Monday afternoon we were treated to a wonderful concert by the children in Year 2, who per- formed solo on their instruments and then sang three numbers from ‘Oliver’ with tremendous gusto and energy. Well done, everyone, and thank you to Mrs Thompson for all her work on this. On World Water Day the school was bedecked with blue again thanks to the Kew College Friends, who put up the water drops the children had prepared and also hosted Bethany Woodward, a Para- lympic athlete, who gave an inspirational talk about the challenges she faces and how she over- comes them. We are nearly at the end of term now and looking forward to the Easter bonnet parade on Wednes- day. This is not a contest (there is no prize) so simple and colourful will do just fine! I wish you all a lovely weekend and hope the weather remains fine. Anne Dobell THANK YOU I would like to thank all those of you who have written to me following my recent bereavement. I must say that your lovely children are the best antidote to sadness ever invented!

Daniel K in 4F for excellent Creative Writing Isobel B in 4F for excellent Creative Writing Thomas Y in 4L for excellent work in Science

Well done children!

Dear Parents, We have had a wonderful week at Kew College and as I write the building is resounding to the boom of the Samba drums in the Hall and cheers of children in the playground practising their arch-ery skills. On Monday afternoon we were treated to a wonderful concert by the children in Year 2, who per-

formed solo on their instruments and then sang three numbers from ‘Oliver’ with tremendous

gusto and energy. Well done, everyone, and thank you to Mrs Thompson for all her work on this.

On World Water Day the school was bedecked with blue again thanks to the Kew College Friends, who put up the water drops the children had prepared and also hosted Bethany Woodward, a Para-lympic athlete, who gave an inspirational talk about the challenges she faces and how she over-comes them. We are nearly at the end of term now and looking forward to the Easter bonnet parade on Wednes-day. This is not a contest (there is no prize) so simple and colourful will do just fine! SPORT RELIEF is coming to KEW COLLEGE

This weekend is the official Sports Relief mile. Kew College’s Sport Relief mile is on Tuesday 27th March 2012

All pupils in Kindergarten and Years 2-6 will take part during their PE lessons by running, walking, skipping or hopping to raise money for this very worthwhile charity (Year 1 did theirs on Thursday 22nd March).

There will be collection buckets outside school on Tuesday morning if you wish to donate any money to cele-

brate your daughters and sons taking part in their mile.

Year 6 in Kew Village Some of you may have seen us in Kew Village on Thursday delivering letters to the shops, restaurants

and other outlets. We wrote our own letters asking for donations of gifts for the school fair which

supports our chosen charity. We decided to hand deliver these for a more personal approach. All of

the shopkeepers were really friendly and told us how polite we were. We have some more letters to deliver,

so look out for us again next week.

Page 5: No 92 Friday 23rd March

This week we were treated to some truly inspirational visitors. Fiona Jeffery from “Just a Drop” talked about

her charity and what Kew College had achieved by their support. In addition to raising £7000 which has

helped to fund a fresh water supply to a school in Uganda, we have also raised the profile of the charity with

our “Go Blue” day on 27th January. Our article and photo in “First News” has inspired other schools across the

country to join in and support the charity. Fiona has recently been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Hon-

ours list for her work in the travel and tourism industry and we offer her our very warm congratulations. Beth-

any Woodward, who has become the second ambassador for the charity, also spoke to the children about her

life and the reasons why she has chosen to give “Just a Drop” her support. Bethany won the World Champion

IPC 400 m in New Zealand in 2011, shortly after her 18th birthday. She has qualified for the Paralympics in

September and is one of GB team’s greatest hopes for a gold medal. Bethany told the children about her

struggle to achieve her ambitions, despite suffering from cerebral palsy at birth which means that she is para-

lysed down one side of her body. It was a very moving speech and she provided great inspiration for the chil-

dren. We wish her the very best of luck and hope to see her on the middle podium in September. Seema

Pathan, a BBC Sportsround correspondent who is hosting the table tennis at the Olympics, presented prizes to

the two children who won the Art Competition for the most creative “Water Drop”. Well done to Clemmie in

Year 6 and to Amelie in Year 2. We were delighted to see Seema again and wish her well with her work in the

Olympic Stadium. Thank you to all of the children at Kew College for all that you have done for the charity and

to the Friends of Kew College for their continued sterling endeavours on behalf of the school and the charities

it supports.

Deirdre Ryan, born 1st June 1982, is an Irish high jumper, who has qualified for the London Olympics later this year. She visited Kew College this week to demonstrate her amazing talent. She spoke to the children about what inspires her and how she became a successful athlete. Her visit was incredibly motivational, rous-ing and inspirational. Well done to the children who asked Deirdre insightful questions and to the Year 5’s and 6’s who sang the Irish National Anthem. (I think that I saw tears in Deirdre’s eyes!) We might even have some budding Olympians in the making after some children tried the ‘Fosbury Flop’ under the careful coach-ing of Deirdre. Thank you to Mrs. Dowding for making the visit possible.

KEW COLLEGE’S OLYMPIC GUEST

On 19th March, the Debating Club explored a rather contentious issue! The motion for the debate was: “This house believes that the United Kingdom should change to Communism.” This proved to be an extremely entertaining debate and was very well researched by both teams. On behalf of the motion were the following points:

Communism would eliminate the gulf between rich and poor, which in turn would reduce feelings of resentment and the sense of inequality which prompted last summer’s riots.

All people would have the same opportunities and chance of a better life. The following points were made in opposition to the motion:

Communism has not worked successfully in many Eastern Bloc countries, due to the control of the media and sense of resentment that all people have the same, irrespective of education, job skills or effort. North Korea’s secretive, dictatorial regime is living proof that Communism does not work.

Converting to Communism would lead to a massive upheaval; a social revolution that could lead to Civil War.

The motion was rejected by 9 votes to 5, with 3 abstentions. This reflected the children’s belief that although everything should be fair, ultimately Communism would mean the reverse, as everybody would benefit equally from the hard work of a few.

Well done to all this term’s debaters! I am looking forward to next term and a fresh influx of fantastic argu-ments...

A huge thank you to Alexis Coleman who helped to get all the packs ready and gave up much time last weekend to do so. For those of you, who missed it last week, please see below.

Sunflower Growing Competition

To encourage the green fingers of Kew College, KCF is hold-ing a Sunflower growing competition.

We challenge you to grow the tallest sunflower or the largest sunflower head. Sunflower packs will be available in return for a donation of £1. We will be selling on Monday as well to ensure every-one has the chance to enter. PLEASE NOTE THE CANES WILL COME LATER WHEN YOUR SUNFLOWERS HAVE GROWN A BIT! Please feel free to decorate your pot to celebrate the sum-mer holidays! Raffle Prizes You can contribute by giving a raffle prize or sponsoring a stall. We will be asking each class to contribute a

prize for the raffle. We received some wonderful contributions last year. Any unwanted concert tickets or

Olympic Games tickets would make a great prize! Hampers are always very popular and could be themed on

gardening, children’s books, toys, cookery etc. Let us know what you are planning so that we don’t get dupli-

cates! Please contact Imogen Baines ([email protected]) who is coordinating this for us and who can give

some guidance if required.

Restaurant Tree This is a new attraction this year. The Restaurant Tree will give you the opportunity to win a meal for two or some vouchers. Restaurant donations will be pinned to a tree in a sealed envelope. You might pick an empty envelope, or if you’re lucky, an envelope containing vouchers for a meal for two… Please get in touch if you know a restaurant that would be willing to make a donation.

Charity aid Foundation You can help us raise money for Kew College and Charity! Have you heard about the CAF (Charities Aid Foundation)? Matched fundraising is when a company offers to 'match' the amount that an employee helps raise for their chosen charity. Below is a list of the companies who offer this scheme. If you work for one of them would you consider raising money for Kew College and the school’s chosen Charity? Companies have different schemes. It can be a one off donation or sponsorship of a stall at the fair. Some companies even pay for their employees’ time spent at the school. Your contribution will make a huge impact on our fundraising efforts.

Trading stalls If you have a business and would like to run a stall, please contact us asap as places are limited. Poster competition This year we will be having a competition to design the poster for the fair. The children will be asked to pro-vide an illustration with an Olympic theme on a sheet of A5 paper, using felt tips, paints or collage. Mr Schmidt will judge the competition and the winning entry will be enlarged to poster size for display at the fair and for use on the cover of the fair programmes. The lucky winner will also receive £10 worth of tokens to use on the day. The remaining entries will be laminated and hung as the bunting for the fair where they can be admired by all. Detailed instructions will be provided on the last day of term and entries will be due on Monday April 30th.

Calling for a baker! We would gladly receive a cake for the ‘guess the weight of the cake’ competition. This should

ideally be delivered to school the day before the fair, so no cream please!

Dinner for six? There are many talented cooks amongst the mums and dads at Kew College. Would you volunteer your time and skills to cook a meal for six guests? This prize will be auctioned. BBQs We will need to borrow a couple of gas BBQs for the BBQ stall. Please let us know if you can lend us your BBQ. We will arrange transport.

If you’d like to get involved in the preparations for the fair, or just give a hand on the day, please let us know. We would welcome any ideas or creative and artistic input!
