SULLY FLIES HOME FOR SECOND STAKES SUCCESSThe fillies’ equivalent, the Listed Prix La Camargo, has a stronger recent history of Classic performers, with the 2016 running being won by dual Classic scorer La Cressonniere and the 2008 renewal was won by the demoted Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Liliside. This year’s running was won by the Rod Collet-trained Sully (Siyouni), who is part owned, like La Cressonniere, by Gerard Augustin-Normand.

The winner was positioned in midfield as Princesschope (Panis) attempted to make all. The leader was soon joined by Herecomesthesun (Invincible Spirit), and the pace was much more honest than in the Omnium II. The winner made her move more towards the centre of the track from 400m out and came through late on to grab a comfortable length win. Second home was Princesschope, who kept finding when challenged, a short neck ahead of Ghazawaat (Siyouni), who suffered a troubled passage hard up against the rail.

Third to Francesco Bere at Deauville in August, the winning grey, bred by Laurent Kling and Alain Dambrines, landed a comfortable victory on her final start as a juvenile in the Listed Criterium de Lyon at Lyon Parilly.

A €37,000 purchase by MAB Agency at the 2015 Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale, Sully is a half-sister to the useful hurdler Shaama Grise (Montmartre), out of the Verglas mare Shaama Rose. She is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Prix Thomas Byron third Oupoukate (Midyan) and the Listed-placed Kenkaye

RACING REVIEWFRANCE

ALL THE WAY SUCCESS FOR FRANCESCO IN FONTAINEBLEAU FEATUREThe first set of recognised French Guineas trials took place at Fontainebleau yesterday and the 1600m Listed Prix Omnium II, which has a roll call of winners that includes the 2009 Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains victor Silver Frost, was landed in game style by Francesco Bere (Peer Gynt), who made all.

Sent straight into the lead by Alexandre Gavilan, the Didier Guillemin-trained colt, the sole stakes winner in the field of five having taken the Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeeen de L’Elevage in August, turned the race into a sprint. He was ridden 400m out and, having been joined and headed by Intellogent (Intello) with 200m to run, fought back to score by a half-length. Nosdargent (Kendargent) was third, two and a half lengths behind Intellogent.

Bred by Snc Regnier, Francois Regnier and Teddy Regnier, the now three-time winner is a half-brother to the Listed Prix de la Californie winner Hurricane (Hurricane Cat), out of the juvenile scorer Montatora (Hector Protector). She is a half-sister to the Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes winner and Australia-based sire Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz) and the Listed Prix Georges Trabaud winner Nice Applause (Royal Applause).

South African RACING AND BREEDING NEWS

TODAY’S HEADLINES

DAWN ASSAULT FEATHER IN GRAY’S CAP Owner, trainer and breeder St John Gray’s familiar green silks with white rings have graced the Gauteng racetracks over the years, carried with distinction by such notables as champion racemare Dancewiththedevil (Modus Vivendi), and Gr.1 winners Big Brass (National Assembly) and Jam Alley (Peintre Celebre).

Last weekend, four-year-old Dawn Assault added his name to the list of homebred stakes winners when he landed Turffontein’s Listed Drum Star Handicap over 1800m at the expense of favourite Secret Captain (Captain Al) following a hard-fought duel over the final furlong.

Dawn Assault is also the first stakes winner for his homebred sire Call To Combat, who in turn is a son of the Gray-owned and campaigned stakes winner Announce (National Assembly). A seven-time winner and successful in the Listed Wolf Power 1600, Call To Combat is lightly represented on the track, given that he has only had access to his owner’s mares. Dawn Assault, who hails from his second crop, is one of five winners out of Cayman Ridge (Al Mufti), who is also the dam of Gr.3 Peninsula Handicap third Caymen Island (Fanatic Dane).

HONG KONG NEXT FOR RISING STAR Brilliant Gr.2 Gauteng Guineas winner Monks Hood will continue his racing career in Hong Kong. In a deal brokered by Form Bloodstock’s Jehan Malherbe, the Querari gelding has been sold and will join the Tony Millard stable.

The four-time winner also landed the Gr.2 Dingaans earlier this season and finished third in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes.

Alistair Gordon, who trained the dual Gr.2 winner for Mary Slack’s Wilgerbosdrift, said: “It is a hard one to lose a horse of this calibre, but every horse has its price.”

The process for the next overseas shipment from the Kenilworth quarantine station is expected to start in June and all going well,

Monks Hood should reach Hong Kong by the end of November after an arduous journey via Mauritius and Europe.

Monks Hood is the third top South African expected to be seen on the world stage in future. Last year’s Durban July winner Marinaresco (Silvano) and Met runner-up Last Winter (Western Winter) left for Mauritius recently, where they will spend the next 90 days before making their way to Europe.

Incidentally, the trio are amongst four South African-breds featuring in the first 2018 listing of the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. Last Winter was in joint 7th position, while Marinaresco, Monks Hood and Cape Flying Championship winner Sergeant Hardy (Captain Al) are all on joint 12th in the illustrious top league, which is headed by retired Gun Runner and Aussie superstar Winx.

WINNING DEBUT FOR GHAALLAJuvenile filly Ghaalla stepped out at Turffontein in the blue and white of Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and displayed that much-

JACKSON OFF THE MARKFreshman stallion Jackson broke his duck as a sire when the Joey Ramsden-trained Bountiful Strength won the 1250m opener at Durbanville last weekend. Sent off at cramped odds following a promising debut effort, the juvenile colt lost his maiden tag by a cosy half-length.

A R700,000 Joburg Select Yearling Sale graduate, he was bred by Highlands Farms Stud and is the second winner from as many runners out of American import Generous Gabriella (Forest Wildcat), who has a yearling full-brother to Bountiful Strength.

Jackson stands alongside his sire, former Horse of the Year Dynasty, at Highlands, where he was bred. The bay retired to stud in 2014 following an illustrious career, the highlights of which were his Gr.1 victories in the Cape Derby, Daily News 2000 and the Champions Cup.

Out of the winning American-bred mare Moonlit Prairie (Cozzene) and a full-brother to Gr.3 winner Heartland, Jackson’s extended female line is that of famed Canadian matriarch No Class, ancestress of champions Regal Classic, Sky Classic, Dance Smartly and of course, former champion American stallion Smart Strike.

prized quality in a racehorse – guts and determination – to open her career on a winning note.

Sent off the 5/4 favourite, Mike de Kock’s charge was in the lead approaching the final furlong and, although she came under pressure from fellow first-timer Celtic Sea (Captain Al), held on doggedly to score by a head. The pair finished five lengths clear of the rest.

The daughter of blue chip stallion Var made history in the sales ring when commanding a record R5m at last year’s BSA National Yearling Sale, a price which surpassed the previous high of R4.75m paid for the Fort Wood filly Savannah Cat in 2015.

Ghaalla is a third generation Varsfontein-bred and is the first foal of the Captain Al mare Fidelity, a winning daughter of champion Promisefrommyheart (Elliodor), also the dam of exciting young stallion Master Of My Fate (Jet Master) and grandam of dual Gr.3 winner Captain Splendid (Captain Al) and the smart three-year-old filly Hashtagyolo (Dynasty). Third dam Secret Pact (Bush Telegraph), is a stakes-winning full-sister to legendary Horse of the Year London News.

DUBAI WORLD CUP UPDATESilvano duo Janoobi and Al Sahem will be in action at the Dubai World Cup meeting on Saturday, 31st March.

Sheikh Hamdan’s Janoobi, who outduelled his paternal half-brother in a bruising finish to last season’s Gr.2 Gauteng Guineas, will be in the line-up of the Gr.1 Dubai Turf over 1800m. The Maine Chance-bred boasts a number of eye-catching performances in Dubai this season, notably a length victory in the Gr.2 Zabeel Mile, a second in the Gr.2 Al Fahidi Fort and most recently, a third in the Gr.1 Jebel Hatta.

“On his Jebel Hatta showing, Janoobi will have a chance of sharing in the prize money in the Dubai Turf,” remarked trainer Mike de Kock.

Al Sahem will be aimed at the Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup, where he will be reunited with champion jockey Anthony Delpech, who rode the then Sean Tarry-trained colt to victory in the Gr.1 SA Derby.

Most recently, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum’s homebred was doing his best work late when fifth behind Hawkbill in the Gr.2 Dubai City Of Gold, which prompted De Kock to remark on his website: “That was a very good run by Al Sahem, he is coming to his best. He ran on from the back against proper international Gr.1 horses and I have little doubt he will see out two miles in the Gold Cup.”

De Kock has come close to landing the two-mile event in recent years, saddling third-placed Zanzamar (Fort Wood) in 2013, while Star Empire (Second Empire) was runner-up in 2015.

SLING NOMINATED FOR QEII CUP DAYSingapore Sling (Philanthropist), winner of the Hong Kong Classic Cup and a gallant runner-up in last weekend’s Hong Kong Derby, is amongst the 116 horses from five continents nominated to contest one of three Gr.1 features at Sha Tin Racecourse on Sunday, 29th April.

The world-class triple-header, worth a combined HK58 million, comprises the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Champions Mile and Chairman’s Sprint Prize, all of which rank in the World’s Top 100 Gr.1 races.

Singapore Sling has been nominated for both the QEII Cup and the Mile, as have Derby hero Ping Hai Star and Aidan O’Brien’s Gr.1 talents Deauville and Lancaster Bomber.

Brett Crawford’s Gr.1 Met hero Whisky Baron (Manhattan Rain) and last year’s winner, Japan’s Neorealism also feature amongst the 12 Gr.1 winners nominated for the 2000m Cup, which will carry a purse of HK$24 million.
