A few years ago, she and partner Clifton, finally bit the bullet and moved on to work on some fresh new projects that had been lurking for some time. Freestone Press - a home- based printmaking studio workshop in Briagolong - was top of the list. Nestled in the bushland along Freestone Creek - in the ever-arty-er township of Briagolong - this busy little studio is building an impressive clientele - and a reputation for brilliantly inspiring workshops & master classes. Gillian studied printmaking originally at the (then) Caulfield Institute of Technology, and while much of her energy later revolved around theatre production (and running the business) she kept her printmaking skills fresh by using her talents to make handmade linocuts for Eye2Eye Theatre graphics. So, it has seemed like a natural progression to open her own purpose-built studio for artists interested in learning the fundamental techniques, and then giving them the chance to practice and develop their printmaking. These days there's around fifteen artists who regularly spend a day together, working in the studio on a whole range of printmaking techniques. The creativity is palpable - and the proof is in the prints. 'We have printmakers coming for studio access on a regular basis, we're running workshops by visiting artists, and we have a pretty good body of work happening' says Gillian proudly.

ABOUT THE ARTIST After obtaining a Degree, majoring in Printmaking, I spent several years teaching art/craft in Melbourne Secondary schools. In 1985 I moved to this beautiful region of Gippsland where I continued over the years to teach part time, run camping/fishing/ boat cruises on the Gippsland Lakes, operate a craft shop and holiday cottages in Briagolong and have 2 children. For 20 years, I lived 14 kms north of Briagolong on a beautiful bush property adjacent to the Freestone Creek and State Forest. In 2006 I moved to a smaller property on the edge of Briagolong. I am currently teaching Technology/Arts at Sale College. I returned to painting with the Briagolong School Of Fine Art in 2001. I am currently working with the “Freestone Printmakers” and Briagolong Artists. I am also on the committee of The Briagolong Art Gallery.

ABOUT THE WORK

From an early age I have been fascinated and aware of the Australian landscape- it’s images and relationship with those who inhabit and interact within it, both in the past and present. The impact on me, of the drama and moods of the Australian landscape, both from my home environment and from travels around Australia, is used to express aspects of this relationship. My works are a collection of various images about a situation or a subject, which resonates within me. I usually gain inspiration from what I see in my everyday life. The iconography of the Australian landscape is a catalyst for many of my works, most images being from the immediate surroundings of my home, which are photographed and used in a variety of ways. Natural features of the environment and man made elements of the landscape are explored. Windmills, old fences, gates, the Freestone Creek and bushland around my home are photographed and sketched. Images of decaying or forgotten structures placed by man in the landscape hold a certain fascination for me. Photocopies, manipulating darks and lights, are done of these images to further enhance the mood or drama I feel, or wish to express. I enjoy creating textured surfaces by crumpling a variety of papers such as rice, tissue, litho, newsprint and rubbing crayons of different types or charcoal across the surface. Rubbings of actual surfaces are also taken. Sometimes these are then torn into fragments which reflect some aspect of the environment or a mood or feeling I have about a particular subject. The torn edge represent or mirrors surfaces or “lines ‘ in the environment, be it on rocks, trees or water. It also reflects the often conflicting relationship man has with this often harsh environment. These fragments are arranged and glued to a surface. Painting and drawing techniques are added. The work evolves and changes as it progresses to a final conclusion. My works incorporate many mediums and techniques, which I am continually exploring. Pastel and charcoal are favourite mediums but printing techniques, dry point, etching, acrylic, watercolour, oil and crayon are all incorporated to create textured and layered surfaces which express aspects of the landscape and environmental issues which impact upon me.

traditional Japanese dress and re-fashioning them in totally individualistic ways. I also have in my

possession a treasured book of Japanese designs from the 16th and 17th centuries. Imagine my delight

when I realised that these were family crests, and that over the centuries they had been used in many

ways, including as repetitive patterns on kimono material. The artistic thread connecting the ‘tribes’ was

quite beautiful, so I have painted these crests behind the teenagers – symbolising the continuing

backdrop of culture, subculture, design and fashion, and its ongoing influence on the lives of people in

the world’s largest modern metropolis.

I have a solo career as a contemporary visual artist, whilst also joining

my partner, Colin Little, to make sculptures and furniture. A strong

design aesthetic informs all of my work.

For well over a decade my art practice centred around abstraction and I

revelled in creating large abstract works in acrylics and oils which

explored connections between the subconscious, science and

spirituality. Then, late in 2011, I joined Freestone Printmakers and

started working with etching and aquatint processes. In doing so I have

rediscovered my love of drawing.

There are two works in this exhibition from a series inspired by

Japanese fashion subcultures. I have followed Tokyo Street Fashion on

twitter for years and found myself becoming increasingly fascinated by

the casual street photographs of young Japanese fashionistas on the

streets of Harajuko. I loved the slightly self-conscious yet flamboyant

expression of self evident in these photos, as well as the almost tribal

groupings into fashion sub cultures – the Fairy Kei, Gothic Punk, Gothic Lolita Punk, Sweet Lolita ….

I loved the way that many young people were taking elements of

For the past few years printmaking has become my chosen medium and as with my paintings most subjects for my etching have evolved from life experience. I feel privileged to have travelled Australia for many years to discover its uniqueness and my connection with it. In some ways my work aims to capture and interpret these experiences which have resulted in a personal collection of my life on the land.

Glenda Johnson

Jenny Noone

Glenda Johnson Artist - Freestone Printmaker

Glenda Johnson has lived and worked in rural Victoria for most of her life. This rural backdrop offers Glenda a richness of diversity in its landscape, people and events. Glenda’s art takes the common place image and interprets it with meaning, mystery and significance to herself and the people around her. Glenda is currently working on a series of coloured reduction lino prints depicting the layers of everyday life in a small rural town. This linocut ‘Loyalty’ is a 5 colour reduction print. Price $260 unframed $350 framed Glenda Johnson is a member of the Freestone Printmakers and has studio access regularly at Freestone Press, Briagolong Victoria.

Jenny Noone is part of the Freestone Printmakers. With a background in painting she has found a new home in printmaking. “Lino printing what fun”

Musings and daydreams become doodles. Doodles are given substance through the carving and inking process. The wheel is turned the paper is peeled back the characters are born – the Cowgirl, the Madonna, the Mermaid, the strange cat lady, the porn star. They take on a life of their own, one print begets another, new characters are born, I just try and keep up.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT JUDY DORBER 2012

After approximately 25 years of art practise which was predominantly painting and in the year 2005, I shifted my focus to printmaking and subsequently attended linocut workshops with David Frazer and Heather Shimmen.

Printmaking then became the predominant medium of expression within my artistic practise. These workshops were held at the “Summer School” through, what was then, “The Briagolong School of Fine Art” under the artistic direction of local artist Pat Waters who, in partnership with her husband Mick, owned and managed the school. Over time a number of well established artists brought their skills and ideas from Melbourne and the surrounding areas to these Summer School workshops broadening the experience base and diversity of input to the dynamics of the work groups. The experience gained by my participation in these workshops helped me to gain a clearer picture of the direction I needed to take in my own artistic journey. My work in all media has been inspired by the landscape and it’s inseparable relationship with the environment. It continues to be so in my work in the printmaking medium. My most recent works are mixed media prints which evolved through a combination of multiple lino plates, I then use hand made stencils to take my images and ideas further , providing me with a broader scope for creative imaging and expression. My aim is to depict the landscape in it’s broad view while, at the same time, providing a peak at it’s often hidden side with some focus on the micro life so important to the overall eco system which sustains it. The end objective in these works is to depict a landscape which is pleasing to the eye but at the same time teaming with the life and activity which is the key to natures resilience in times of fire, drought and flood. This aspect of nature’s resilience and rejuvenation after natural disaster are the factors underpinning the current direction of my image making process.

Lorraine Watt

LORRAINE WATT - ARTIST STATEMENT Regardless of the subject matter, it is often the form, patterns, contrast and lines which are of interest to me. Furthermore, I find the abstract nature of the details of the subject quite exciting. In general I have preferred the use of dry media to explore and develop expression of my interests. However, recently I have focused on printmaking including linocutting and etching.

Pat Waters

Pat Waters

Pat Waters graduated from RMIT in 1969. She gained an Associate Diploma of Fine Art majoring in painting and printmaking studying under George Baldessin, Jan Senbergs, Tait Adams and Peter Clarke. She has been exhibiting successfully in Melbourne and Gippsland for over 40 years and has works in regional galleries and private collections across the country. A teaching career also spans many decades including 15 years as Diploma of Visual Arts coordinator at East Gippsland Institute of TAFE and as Director of the Briagolong School of Fine ART for nine years. Her art expertise led to overseas study tours to Indonesia, England, France, Italy and Spain over 24 years. Colour symbolism and abstraction using modulated colour on large canvases was her chosen direction whilst studying and in the early years of her practice but a great interest in the psychology of Carl Jung inspired figurative works using ancient mythology and personal dream imagery as subject matter. Drawing, printmaking and a broader exploration of mediums were applied to this body of work. Moving to Gippsland in the late 1970s and settling in Briagolong a small town in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, began a love affair with the Australian bush. The colours and the mystery of this primeval environment set up challenges the artist is still responding to today. Early landscapes were representational with a dialogue taking place between Pat as a contemporary artist and the magnificent red gums on her property, between her and the birds who visited and between her and the mystery of the shadows and light that constantly changed. Previous mythological themes crept back into the work as the artist discussed the interaction between human beings and their environment, their practical and spiritual dependence on it and their responsibility to preserve it for future generations.
