What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is the most frequently

diagnosed cancer in women.

Breast cancer is a tumor that starts in the breast and that can grow into surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body. Both men and women can have breast cancer, but women have it most

often.

Although breast cancer is the leading cancer among white and African American

women, African American women are more likely to die from it.

What is a Self-Breast Exam?

A self-breast exam is a way that you can check your breasts for changes (such as lumps or thickenings). It includes looking at and feeling your breast. Any unusual

changes should be reported to your doctor.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast.

Mammograms are the best way to find

breast cancer early when it is easier to

treat and before it is big enough to feel or

cause symptoms.

When do I get a mammogram?

Women age 40 and older should have

mammograms every 1 to 2 years. Women

who are at a higher risk of breast cancer

should talk with their health care providers

about getting a mammogram earlier.

What can I expect from a mammogram?

Mammograms are quick and easy. You

stand in front of an X-ray machine, your

breast is placed breast between two

plastic plates and the plates slowly press

your breast to make it flat. An x-ray is

taken of each breast.

Does a mammogram hurt?

There is a little discomfort due to the

pressure that is put on the breast, but the

discomfort immediately goes away when

the pressure is relieved.

What happens when I avoid getting a

mammogram?

If a tumor is found late and at a more

advanced stage, you may need longer,

more intense and more expensive

treatment.

Also, your chances of surviving the

disease are greatly reduced.

What is the cost of a mammogram?

Most health insurance plans cover all or in

part the cost of a mammogram. Without

insurance, it can cost from $200-$300.

All women aged 40 and older with

Medicare can get a screening

mammogram each year.

How much does it cost to treat breast

cancer?

With insurance, it costs $300-$1200 per

month to pay for hospital visits,

prescription and nonprescription drugs,

and physician fees.

It also costs about $100-$200 per month

to pay for transportation to hospital and

doctor visits, special diets, and childcare.

Some costs cannot be measured. For

example, you may lose your job,

experience family and relationship strain,

or become depressed.
