Charm in the GII Stephen Foster H. in June, Awesome Again was sent off the 7-5

favorite against seven rivals and came through with an impressive score. Kept much

closer to the pace than is his style, the bay colt was head-and-head with Tale of the Cat

Chenery, celebrated as a pioneering woman in the game ofracing and best known as the owner of 1973 Triple Crown heroSecretariat, took her rightful place in the Hall and wasrepresented by her daughter, Kate Chenery Tweedy. AShe really learned an admiration for horses as athletes,@Tweedy said, stressing the importance of aftercare as a legacy ofChenery=s contributions to the industry. The lone contemporary inductee to the Hall of Fame wasPhipps Stable=s Heavenly Prize, and trainer Shug McGaugheywas on hand to accept the award on behalf of his long-timeclients. McGaughey fondly recalled the day Heavenly Prize brokeher maiden, which was part of a split-division race. The otherdivision was captured by commonly owned and trainedchampion Inside Information, touching off a particularly memorable time in the Phipps Family=s extensive history. AI=d like to thank the entire Phipps family for giving me theopportunity to train their wonderful horses over the past 30years or so,@ McGaughey said, adding praise for Claiborne Farmfor their role in the family=s success. Claiborne founder Arthur B.Hancock, Sr. was also inducted later in the morning. Fittingly, on the eve of the GI Whitney S., the ceremonyincluded a major Whitney family presence with the induction ofWilliam Collins Whitney, Harry Payne Whitney and CorneliusVanderbilt Whitney. Mary Lou Whitney and Lev Miller, nephewof C.V. Whitney, were on hand to accept the honor. Miller spokeof a Agenerational addiction@ to racing present in the family andexpressed pride in the entirety of the Whitneys= accomplishments. Also inducted as APillars of the Turf@ were California racingfigures Charles H. Strub and Elias J. Hall of Fame Induction cont.

The New York racing theme continued with the induction of

APillars@ John Morrissey and August Belmont I.

Hal Price Headley, meanwhile, was remembered primarily for

his instrumental role in the foundation of Keeneland Race

Course.

AHe loved his horses and was passionate about the horse,@ said

Hal Price Headley=s grandson Headley Bell. AHe was passionate

about sharing that experience with the fans. And truly, there is

no better example of that than what we see at Keeneland.@

The record-setting horse Preakness and trainer William

Lakeland added some 19th-Century flavor to the 2018 class.

The Hall of Fame also rolled out plans for a new interactive

theater which will bring visitors closer to the most iconic

achievements by members of the Hall. John Hendrickson,

husband of Mary Lou Whitney, said the project will require a

$20-million investment and will require industry-wide

participation--a goal which set off on the right foot with a

$1-million donation from Whitney and Hendrickson.

"I expect him to be much closer with Diversify coming drawn

out in the six, and [they're] giving us six pounds. It's a short run

into the first turn, and if Diversify gets hung wide, he gets hung

wide," trainer Chad Summers said. "I'm as confident as I can be.

Everything he's always shown me over his entire career is that

he can do it, and until he can't, I'm not going to think he can't."

Tapwrit (Tapit), a well-beaten fifth as the 3-1 favorite in the

Suburban, looks for his first victory since last year=s GI Belmont S.

Backyard Heaven (Tizway), a breakthrough winner of

Churchill=s GII Alysheba S. May 4, looks to rebound after a

disappointing sixth as the 4-5 chalk in the GI Stephen Foster H.

Allen & Jimmy Jerkens | Horsephotos

AFTER SURGERY, JERKENS TRYING TO SLOW

DOWN. BUT CAN HE? By Bill Finley

With Saratoga approaching, trainer Jimmy Jerkens, 59, was hit

with the very last thing he needed, chest pains that led to a trip

to the emergency room that led to heart surgery. Surgeons had

to insert stents to clear

blockages.

The surgery took place in early

July and, as expected, Jerkens=s

doctor told him he needed to

change his habits. More

exercise, a better diet, less stress

and a lighter work schedule. The

problem is, there=s no way to be

a successful trainer on the New

York circuit and, especially at

Saratoga, unless you put in

extraordinary hours and push

yourself. So, for Jerkens,

Saratoga 2018 will be about

more than winning races. He must manage his health situation.

But trainers work seven days a week, maybe 12 hours a day.

This will not be easy.

AWhen you=re in a competition like this, you don=t want to let

anything slip if you can help it,@ he said. AYou have to keep

participating and you have to keep thinking all the time. It takes

a lot. Every day you have to observe your horses and

communicate with the owners. It=s more than a full time job. It

has to be your whole life or else

I can=t imagine how you can get

very far.@

Jerkens is, of course, the son of

the late Allen Jerkens, one of the

legendary figures in New York

racing history. His father was

leading trainer at Saratoga from

1971 through 1973 and the

younger Jerkens, already

assisting his father, still

remembers what it took to win

those titles.

AI just remember relentless

work,@ he said. AIt was only a

four-week meet then and it

seemed like we were running four or five a day. It was just

incredible.@

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens reminisces on the 1973 GI Whitney S. in

which his father, legendary conditioner H. Allen Jerkens, upset

Secretariat with a horse called Onion. Click to view video.

Jerkens cont.

From his father, he learned that you could not win unless you

went at maximum speed at all times. The lessons paid off as the

younger Jerkens has become one of the top trainers on the New

York circuit. After working for his father for more than 25 years,

Jerkens went out on his own in 1997. He=s won 69 graded stakes

races and has been particularly productive at Saratoga, where

he has won two runnings of the GI Travers S., the GI Woodward

S., the GII Jim Dandy S. and the GII Bernard Baruch S.

One race he has not won is the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial

S., formerly known as the GI King=s Bishop S. Obviously, he=d be

thrilled to win a Grade I race named after his father, but he isn=t

confident it will happen any time soon.

AIt would mean a lot to win that race, for obvious reasons,@

Jerkens said. ABut I just don=t seem to get that type of horse

(3-year-old dirt sprinters) in my barn. We were third one year

with a nice horse named Desert Key (E Dubai) in 2008 (when the

race was still named the King=s Bishop). I don=t think I=ve run in it

since.@

He doesn=t have many stars in his barn this year but was

expecting a productive and healthy Saratoga. That changed the

instant his started to feel severe chest pains.

AI wasn=t really feeling well for a while, but I kind of ignored it

because it tends to happen to you a lot in this business,@ Jerkens

said. AYou get run down and tired in this business. But then one

night I had these horrible chest pains.@

He was back at the barn four days later, but says that=s not as

crazy as it might seem.

AYou can sit in the barn and observe things, instead of sitting at

home,@ he said. AI backed off on the physical part. I used to take

horses out in the afternoon myself, and they=d be tugging on me

and rearing up and stomping at me. I haven=t gotten back to

doing that yet. But I=d like to get back to taking them out myself.@

Jerkens cont.

Not that Jerkens is ignoring his doctors. He says he=s lost

15 pounds since the heart scare and is trying to learn to

delegate more responsibilities to his help. That hasn=t been easy.

AI would like it if I could delegate more things to other people,@

Jerkens said. ABut I=m the kind of guy who likes to do everything

myself, which I realize isn=t a realistic approach. I like to do

things my way and that=s the only way I know. I just don=t know

how realistic it is for me to change much more than I was before

this happened.@

He is on medications, but says they have made him less

energetic.

Jerkens wants to be healthy, but it=s clear that his desire to be

a winning horse trainer is even more important. Most of the

successful trainers are like that. Training comes first, before

family, vacations, sleep and general relaxation. The hours they

put in are excessive. Jerkens will try to change as much as he

can, but don=t expect much to be any different.

AYou are who you are,@ he said.

There are a number of outstanding Thoroughbredaftercare programs in our country and we are excited to behelping out such worthy causes.@ Select Sales offered 472 horses at public auction in 2017, with358 selling for a combined total of $24 million. AIt started with a conversation between me and Jen [Roytz, executive director of RRP] and morphed into an initiative with allthe partners in Select trying to be proactive and cutting-edgewith a new bold agreement putting retiring Thoroughbreds andtheir aftercare in a much-needed spotlight,@ said Carrie Brogden,RRP board member and partner in Select Sales. AWe at SelectSales realize that the responsibility that comes with breedingand having Thoroughbreds does not stop on sale day.@ Other sales companies that have pledged their support to thisinitiative include Buckland Sales Agency, Hidden Brook Farm andAshview Farm.

PROVEN RESERVES (c, 3, Flatter--Oil Empress, by Empire

Maker) continued his march up the ranks and in distance after a

debut MSW win by 6 1/4 lengths over a mile at Aqueduct on

Apr. 20 before failing to hit the board at 1 1/16 miles at Belmont

on June 9. Freshened a bit here and adding blinkers, the 3-1

second choice hopped at the start before finding his sweet spot

in the four or five path while racing mid-pack. He swung five

wide into the stretch, unleashing a steady drive that propelled

him to the front. Covered in mud, he skipped home by 3 1/4

lengths over Uncle Sigh (Indian Charlie). Proven Reserves is the

third winner from three starters out of his dam, whose other

two runners are J. S. Choice (Congrats), GSP, $118,345; Lazarus

Project (Discreetly Mine), SP, $203,528. Oil Empress foaled a full

brother to the winner this year and also has an unraced juvenile

Street Sense colt named Celandine and a yearling filly by Carpe

Moon Colony (Uncle Mo) almost looks like a bargain on paper

as a $400,000 KEESEP yearling. Out of Grade II winner and

MGISW Promenade Girl (Carson City), he is a half to ‘TDN Rising

Cousin Pete, a member of Yes It’s True’s final crop, provided

another nice pinhooking score. A $20,000 KEENOV weanling and

$52,000 Fasig July yearling, he garnered a winning bid of

$320,000 at OBS April after showing off a big, eye-catching

stride through an eighth in :10 2/5. He hails form the extended

female family of MGISW Riskaverse (Dynaformer).

Fullness of Time (Flatter) is a half to the recently deceased

GSW/GISP sprinter Bobby Abu Dhabi (Macho Uno). The

$270,000 September yearling is coupled in the wagering with

fellow Klaravich/Chad Brown representative Ahead of Plan (Big

Drama), who will have to draw in from the also-eligible list. The

Florida-bred colt brought a gaudy price tag of $475,000

considering his pedigree after stopping the clock in :10 flat at

MAQUIS (c, 2, Pioneerof the Nile--Life Well Lived, by Tiznow),

a $350K Keeneland September graduate, was sent off at a tick

under 3-1 for his career bow at Toyko June 17 and finished a

creditable fourth (video, gate 7). Joao Moreira takes over at the

controls on the bay, whose Grade I-winning half-brother

American Patriot (War Front) stood his first year at stud at

Darley Japan in 2018. The February foal is also kin to SW Well

Humored (Distorted Humor) and to MGSP Muqtaser (Distorted

G1 Dubai World Cup hero Well Armed (Tiznow) and GSW Witty

GOFFS ORBY LED BY FULL-SISTER TO OAKS WINNER

Forever Together | Racing Post

The catalogue for the Oct. 2-3 Goffs Orby Sale, featuring 11 yearlings by champion sire Galileo (Ire), is now available online. The two-day stand sees a slimmed-down catalogue, as 418 yearlings go under the hammer versus 468 in 2017. Past

graduates include this year=s G1 Investec Oaks victress and

€900,000 Orby graduate Forever Together (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) whose full-sister (lot 318) will be offered by Ballylinch Stud; as well as classy juveniles Angel=s Hideaway (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who won the G3 Princess Margaret S. after being knocked down for €390,000 last September; and Thursday=s G2 Qatar Richmond S. victor Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never), purchased for €350,000 at the same sale. An Australia (GB) half-sister to Land Force is among the Oak Farm Stables draft as lot 127 and the duo are also half-siblings to MGISW Photo Call (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Other yearlings by Galileo include The Castlebridge Consignment=s lot 61, a half-brother to G1 Middle Park S. hero Astaire (Ire) (Intense Focus), a filly (lot 144) out of a full-sister to champion and MG1SW Mozart (Ire) (Danehill) and a son (lot 374) of G1 English/Irish 1000 Guineas bridesmaid Lightning Thunder (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}). Glenvale Stud offers lot 165, a full-sister to three-time Group 1 winner Alice Springs (Ire).

Among the many other top pedigrees slated for the sale is a half-sister (lot 109) to G1SW Signs of Blessing (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) by Muhaarar (GB) from the draft of Barronstown Stud. Cont. p2

BATT-ERED AND BRUISED In an exhibition of pure sprinting prowess, Sheikh Hamdan bin

Rashid al Maktoum=s Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) brought all

his power to bear on his rivals on Friday to register back-to-back

successes in Goodwood=s G2 King George Qatar S. Despite the

contrasting ground conditions to the easy turf he encountered

12 months ago and the obvious questions posed by defeat in the

June 19 G1 King=s Stand S. at Royal Ascot, the bay attracted

heavy support as the 8-11 favourite and was in front before he

had raced two furlongs. Clear soon after, the 4-year-old gave Jim

Crowley little to do and hit the line with a four-length margin

separating him and the 2014 and 2016 winner of this race Take

Cover (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), with the 2015 winner Muthmir (Ire)

(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in third, a half-length away.

AHe=s a man now and I=m so pleased with the way he is behaving,@

trainer Charlie Hills commented. AIt was pretty special, he=s some

horse. Jim always looked in control. He is an exceptional horse and

I think that could well be a career-best.@ Cont. p2

Goffs Orby Led By Full-Sister to Oaks Winner Cont. from p1

Lot 161, a son of Frankel (GB) out of two-time Grade I winner

Adoration (Honor Grades) from The Castlebridge Consignment is

also scheduled to sell as are: an Airlie Stud-consigned Dark Angel

(Ire) half-brother to G1 Darley Dewhurst S. victor Intense Focus

(Giant=s Causeway) (lot 254); a Kitten=s Joy full-sister (lot 317) to

GISW Kitten=s Dumplings and two other black-type winners; and

a colt (lot 386) by standout second-crop sire Camelot (GB) out of

Madeira Mist (Ire) (Grand Lodge), the dam of MGISW Joshua

Tree (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) from Hollyhill Stud.

AWe are thrilled with the support we have received from

vendors this year as we have been entrusted with a truly world

class selection of yearlings,@ said Goffs Group Chief Executive

Henry Beeby. ASeveral leading breeders have sent us more of

their best than ever and we cannot wait to present this amazing

group of yearlings to potential purchasers from home and

abroad. Forever Together is the epitome of what the Orby

represents and aspires to each year, and her own sister is just

one of an incredible group of yearlings that would grace any

catalogue anywhere, resulting in a selection of which we are

very proud. We specifically set out to zone in on true quality this

year and so have tightened the catalogue with the result that

our 418 colts and fillies will set a very high standard and allow

purchasers to focus on consistent class across the two days.@

In 2017, the Orby Sale grossed €40,702,500, with an average

of €109,122 and a median of €65,000. A total of 373 yearlings

found new homes, including the €1.6-million sales topper, a son

of Frankel (GB) out of Belesta (GB) (Xaar {GB}). Sessions for the

2018 sale begin at 11 a.m. on Oct. 2 and 10 a.m. local time on

Oct. 3. The Orby Sale is followed by the Oct. 4 Goffs Sportsman=s

Sale, with the latter sale=s catalogue available online on Aug. 8.

G2 King George S. Cont. from p1

Battaash was a raw sophomore when he came to this rain-

drenched meeting in 2017, but he had already served notice

that he was from a privileged place in Sandown=s Listed Scurry S.

and G3 Sprint S. and he duly confirmed his otherworldliness

here. What he did have to weigh against his talent was an

aversion to the stalls and a tendency to waste vital energy

during the preliminaries which was most evident when he

worked himself up before his first Group 1 test in York=s G1

Nunthorpe S. in August. Disappointing when fourth on that

occasion, he bounced back in style with all his potency restored

by the efforts of Charlie Hills=s team in the interim when besting

Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) by four lengths in the G1 Prix de

l=Abbaye de Longchamp at Chantilly in October. Cont. p3

Battaash returns a winner at Goodwood | Racingfotos.com

G2 King George Qatar S. Cont.

If there was a glimpse that mental frailties remained on his

comeback success in the G2 Temple S. at Haydock May 26,

where he made a drama out of a straightforward task, they

were mostly dispelled by his display at the Royal Meeting but his

ego was dented there by Blue Point (Ire) (Shamardal) and he

simply had to win this.

Drawn on his own out wide and separated from the rest by a

partition, Battaash exited the gates reassuringly alertly but had

only Take Cover for company initially before Jim Crowley opted

to leave that race specialist isolated up the centre. After a

furlong, a line of four of the

fastest horses in the country

were already applying the

pressure with Take Cover,

Battaash, who had crossed over

to join last year=s G3 Molecomb

S. winner Havana Grey (GB)

(Havana Gold {Ire}) at the front of

the main group, and Kachy (GB)

(Kyllachy {GB}) on the stand=s rail

matching strides. Soon after,

Shadwell=s beau ideal was in

control and from halfway the

King George had become two

races in one with the dual focus

on the lone charger and on the

main race which involved the fight for the silver medal between

the hard-knocking Goodwood lovers.

Charlie Hills was relieved as well as delighted afterwards. AIt

was fantastic and apart from the fact that they split a bit at the

start and he had no company it all went to plan,@ he said. AJim

had no option but to let him go forward. He=s been training a lot

better at home since Ascot and Gary Witheford has done a great

job with him at the stalls. He=s growing up and I think that=s the

best he=s behaved in the whole of his career. There is a great

programme ahead with three weeks between each of three

races, starting with the [Aug. 24] G1 Nunthorpe. It will be York,

then Ireland [for the Sept. 16 G1 Flying Five at The Curragh] and

France [for the Oct. 7 G1 Prix de l=Abbaye de Longchamp]. I

don=t think the Everest is on the agenda, as it would rule a lot of

races out over here, but the Breeders= Cup might be something

we think about.@

Crowley added, AThere isn=t a horse in Europe fast enough to

lead him. This year I=ve noticed he=s a bigger, stronger horse. I

don=t think he was in the same form at Ascot as today. Last year

I got to the start early at York and it blew his brains. I can=t wait.

I=ve been lucky with some good sprinters, such as Ertijaal in

Dubai, but he tops the lot and is as good a horse as I=ve probably

ever ridden.@

Shadwell also enjoyed third place with Muthmir and his trainer

William Haggas said, AHe=s in a rich vein of form and this ground

is right up his street. I=m sure

there=s another big one in him,

but he won=t be taking on

Battaash again.@

Pedigree Notes... Battaash is the first foal out of

the maiden Anna Law (Ire)

(Lawman {Fr}), who is a

half-sister to four black-type

performers headed by Shadwell=s

smart Etlaala (GB) (Selkirk) who

captured the G2 Champagne S.

and Bird Key (GB) (Cadeaux

Genereux {GB}). The latter

produced last year=s G2 Duke of York S. scorer and G1 QIPCO

British Champions Sprint S. and G1 Diamond Jubilee S. runner-

up Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and another to take high rank

in this category for the operation. The third dam Noirmant (Ire)

(Dominion {GB}) is a half to Sadler=s Wells=s G1 Prix Royal-Oak

winner Braashee and the four-time Group 3 winner Adam Smith

(GB), and to the G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner Ghariba (Ire) (Final

Straw {GB}). The latter is in turn the dam of the listed-winning

Promptly (Ire) (Lead On Time), who herself produced the G3

Autumn S. scorer and G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Fantastic

View (Distant View). Anna Law also has a yearling filly by

Gutaifan (Ire) and a foal full-sister to Battaash. Click for the free

GLORIOUS DANCER Mirage Dancer (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who hit the board in last

term=s G3 Hampton Court S. and G2 Great Voltigeur S., opened

this semester with a second in Ascot=s Listed Buckhounds S. and

registered a first stakes triumph in the May 26 Listed Tapster S.

over this course and distance. The homebred bay then slipped

to fifth in Royal Ascot=s June 19 Listed Wolferton S., before

posting a runner-up finish in Newmarket=s July 12 G2 Princess of

Wales=s S., and he justified a sustained gamble in Friday=s G3

Bombay Sapphire Glorious S. at Goodwood to secure a personal

best in taking fashion, lifting Sir Michael Stoute to within one of

Luca Cumani=s record seven renewals. At the line, the 6-5 chalk

had 3 1/2 lengths to spare over Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid)

with Second Step (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) running on to finish

another length adrift in third.

Mirage Dancer was settled off the tempo in third for most of

the contest. Bounding to the front approaching the quarter-mile

marker, he stayed on strongly under urging thereafter to

provide Ryan Moore, and Stoute, with a third straight win

following Kings Fete (GB) (King=s Best) in 2016 and subsequent

dual Group 1 hero Poet=s Word (Ire) (Poet=s Voice {GB}) last

year.

Mirage Dancer (pink cap) | Racing Post

AIt was a very pleasant race to watch and the good thing is

Mirage Dancer settled really well,@ commented racing manager

Lord Grimthorpe. AWe had a good idea that he=d be at home

here, as he won at Goodwood earlier this year, but the race

today went very smoothly. I think Ryan [Moore] wanted to kick

on earlier than he would have liked to as they were going a tad

too slow for him, but the way he did it was nice and he went on

and ran well to the line. I think he is at last coming to the horse

that we have hoped that he would make into. The horse does fit

a typical Sir Michael Stoute profile and I think we can raise our

sights a little bit and it will be looking to see where the best

opportunities are. Races such as the [GI] Canadian International

and [GI] Northern Dancer come into the spectrum. The horse

was quite happy on the [good-to-firm] ground, and wouldn=t

mind a bit of cut either. The main point is that he is furnishing

and improving both mentally and physically. He has got a big

enough frame to take him forward. We are very pleased and it is

another group winner for Frankel, which always helps.@

FROM A MIRAGE TO REALITY Having struck with Mirage Dancer (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the

previous race on the card, Sir Michael Stoute extended his

record haul to six when sending out Regal Reality (GB) (Intello

{Ger}) to success in Friday=s G3 Bonhams Thoroughbred S. at

Goodwood. Typical of one benefitting from the master trainer=s

patient approach, Cheveley Park Stud=s homebred bay went into

hibernation after picking off a Sept. 20 seven-furlong maiden at

the renowned Great Yarmouth schooling ground in his sole

juvenile outing and shook away the rust when opening this

campaign with a sixth to subsequent G1 St James=s Palace S. hero

Without Parole (GB) (Frankel {GB}) upped to this trip tackling

Sandown=s May 24 Listed Heron S. in his only other appearance

last time. Regal Reality was anchored several clicks off the pace

racing fifth of the six contenders through halfway here.

Nudged along to close in the straight, the 10-1 chance was

three lengths in arrears entering the final eighth, but found top

gear under a Franke Dettori swagger and swooped late to usurp

the duelling Ostilio (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and Chief

Ironside (GB) (Lawman {Fr}) by 1 3/4 lengths and a short head,

respectively, for a career high.

This horse was very impressive at Yarmouth on his first start, but

got loose on the gallops after and tweaked his neck. That=s why

other day and he is a very exciting prospect. Today was the day

that we=d find out what he is. We will talk with Sir Michael

[Stoute], but it looks like he=d get a bit further. Cheveley Park is

having a little bit of a purple patch, we=ve won four group races

in 12 days, so it puts Cheveley Park back on the map. [His dam]

BABY YOU=RE A STAR In a race of mixed fortunes, Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al

Maktoum=s Pretty Baby (Ire) (Orpen) had the right blend of a

charmed run and being streetwise enough to land Friday=s G3

L=Ormarins Queens Plate Oak Tree S. at Goodwood. Earning a tilt

at black-type with wins at Chelmsford in October and Redcar

May 3 by a cumulative margin of 8 1/2 lengths, the bay proved

more than comfortable in that territory when annexing

Nottingham=s Listed Kilvington S. over six furlongs May 12 and

was just a short-head shy of adding the G3 Summer S. to her

tally at York July 13. Always in the right spot tracking the pace

from her low draw, the 3-1 favourite ground her way to the

front inside the last 75 yards to deny the luckless Dancing Star

(GB) (Aqlaam {GB}) by a neck.

ADane [O=Neill]=s saddle slipped and she was lugging a bit, but

this was her first time at seven and she liked it,@ trainer William

Haggas said. AWe always thought she would. She would have

won the Summer S. in another couple of strides and is getting

better. She=s always been feisty and I think she can go up in

grade now. She is in the [G2] Hungerford [at Newbury Aug. 18]

FLIGHT DELAYED Everywhere he has turned this year Sheikh Hamdan bin

Mohammed Al Maktoum=s Dee Ex Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}) has

met at least one immoveable force, and connections will be

hoping that another is not lurking among his trio of opponents in

Saturday=s G3 Qatar Gordon S. at Goodwood. While a second

placing in the June 2 G1 Epsom Derby could never be described

as disappointing, particularly when he started at 20-1, he has

twice since failed to capitalise on seemingly less-demanding

contests. Behind eight other rivals in both the G1 Irish Derby at

The Curragh June 30 and in the July 14 G1 Grand Prix de Paris,

he again encounters the fast ground that was probably to blame

for those reversals but connections could not resist this

opportunity.

APlan A was to bring Mildenberger (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) here for

it, but sadly he has just missed a bit too much time since Ascot

and we are not happy bringing him here at this stage,@ trainer

Mark Johnston=s son and assistant Charlie explained. AWe made

the entry for Dee Ex Bee on Monday morning, as there were

only six in it at that stage, and it was one of those we felt too

good to pass by really. We don=t want to go to the well too often

on fast ground this summer as we want to still have the horse in

good form for his main target, the St Leger [but] he is eight

pounds clear on official ratings. We know he handles the track,

as he won here last year. We will walk the track on Saturday

morning and as long as we are happy, he will take his chance.@

Dee Ex Bee=s biggest problem could be the inclusion of

Juddmonte=s filly Sun Maiden (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a 12-length

novice stakes winner over 10 furlongs at Salisbury May 17 who

ran third behind Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Thursday=s

G1 Nassau S. winner Wild Illusion (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2

Ribblesdale S. over this mile-and-a-half trip at Royal Ascot June

21.

As a half-sister to the brilliant Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}),

who captured three renewals of the Nassau here, the >TDN

Rising Star= has the pedigree to excel and Sir Michael Stoute=s

string are in a good place at the moment.

Charlie Appleby relies on the July 14 Woodford Reserve H.

winner Cross Counter (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) and he said of the

Ascot scorer, AHe is stepping up in class, but we feel that he is

capable of taking on better horses now and this should hopefully

give us a pointer for the rest of the season.@

Connections of Lightning Spear (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) are eyeing a

start in the GI Breeders= Cup Mile after the 7-year-old scooped

the G1 Sussex S. a AWin And You=re In@ qualifying race for that

Churchill Downs feature in November. After several near-misses,

the popular David Simcock-trained Qatar Racing colourbearer

struck at Group 1 level at the 16th attempt in the mile

showpiece at Goodwood on Wednesday, beating Expert Eye

(GB) (Acclamation {GB}) in the hands of Oisin Murphy.

"He really did deserve that victory,@ said Newmarket-based

Simcock. AWe can enjoy him like we always do, but we can enjoy

him a little bit more now. I don't really know where we will go at

the moment and we will sit down and talk about it. I know

Sheikh Fahad would like to end up at the Breeders' Cup, so that

is where he will probably end up. He loves travelling and he

loves racing his horses, so that is where we will probably end up.

Where we go between now and then, I don't know."

ENABLE GALLOPS AT HQ MG1SW Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire})'s progress towards a

comeback took another step forward this week with a gallop at

Newmarket on Wednesday. John Gosden's champion suffered a

setback earlier in the season and has been sidelined since. The

Juddmonte representative=s main aim is the defence of her G1

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe crown, but a return in the G1

Juddmonte International at York on Aug.22 has been mooted,

although she will not be rushed.

Owner Khalid Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe

said, "Enable worked on the Al Bahathri on Wednesday. It was

nothing very serious, but she showed a good action, and

attitude as well, and she's taking little steps towards a comeback

run. York would be a nice option, but we will certainly not push

her to get there just for that race and we have the option of the

September S. at Kempton [on Sept. 8] if not."

GOFFS UK SILVER SALE CATALOGUE ONLINE The catalogue for the Goffs UK Silver Yearling Sale, scheduled

for Doncaster on Aug. 30, is now online. A total of 174 yearlings

are slated to go under the hammer, up from 149 in 2017. Group

2 winner Pleaseletmewin (Ire) (Power {GB}) and listed winner

Fashion Queen (GB) (Aqlaam {GB}) are both past Silver Sale

alumni successful this season, as are Weatherbys Supersprint

one-two Ginger Nut (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) and Moojim (Ire)

(Moohaajim {Ire}).

Lot 518, a son of Zebedee (GB), is a lot of note. The Killulla

Stud-consigned yearling is out of a half-sister to G1SW Distant

Way (Distant View), Group 3 winner Cima de Pluie (GB)

(Singspiel {Ire}) and listed winner Way to Paris (GB) (Champs

Elysees {GB}).

Another well-bred yearling is lot 546, a daughter of Cable Bay

(Ire), who will be offered by Harry Dutfield. Her dam is a half-

sister to G1 Nassau S. heroine Sultanina (GB) (New Approach

{Ire}), as well as the listed-placed Coconut Creme (GB) (Cape

Cross {Ire}).

Veteran sire Raven=s Pass is represented by lot 566, a filly out

of Saxon Princess (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who is a half-sister to

European champion 3-year-old colt and three-time Group 1

winner Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and a full to G3 Solario S.

hero Fantastic Moon (GB). She will be offered by Battlefield

Stud.

ALike the Premier Yearling Sale, the Silver Sale has taken a step

up this year in terms of quality,@ said Goffs UK Managing

Director Tony Williams. AThe sale=s focus remains, first and

foremost, on the individual and there are some cracking horses

in the sale following unprecedented demand for places in

Premier. Last year we saw further support from the domestic

market with more buyers targeting this sale and we attracted a

large number of purchasers from throughout Europe as well

which drove the clearance rate to 87%. That success, followed

by the results of graduates such as Ginger Nut, Moojim and

Pleaseletmewin on the track, have meant the sale has enjoyed a

successful year which has translated into further support from

consignors, some of which are new to the sale in 2018.@
