TWO TOP MARES OUT OF KEENELAND SALEBy Ron Mitchell

Two high-profile offerings at Keeneland's January

horses of all ages sale—Yearly Report and Peace

Burg—have been withdrawn, a development that not

only will affect the sale's overall numbers but also

result in other horses possibly receiving more buyer

attention.

Consigned by Gainesway, Yearly Report, a

15-year-old daughter of General Meeting who earned

$835,900 and won three grade II stakes, is also the

dam of grade I winner Condo Commando and grade

II-placed Checklist. She was believed to be in foal to

Tapit.

Part of the Paramount Sales consignment, group

II winner Peace Burg, the only mare cataloged in foal

to War Front, was withdrawn last week after produc-

ing a filly on a Feb. 17, 2015 cover.

"Both were very attractive offerings, and buy-

ers targeting them will be disappointed," said Tom

Thornbury, associate director of Keeneland sales.

"But in looking at the January catalog overall, those

within will appeal to a far broader audience on which

the January sale has always depended." BH

Newer 16 stall state-of-the-art barn with attached 90' x 160' indoor arena, lab, lounge, and breeding area; 2 additional barns with a total of 40 stalls. Outdoor show ring with bleachers. This is a turn-key facility suitable for any discipline. REDUCED to $2,999,999. CRESTFIELD FARM—127 +/- ACRES—A rare opportunity to acquire a true horseman's farm known for producing winners. Having raised or sold over 75 stakes winners, including 5 Champions on this farm, Mr. Robert Courtney, Sr., has developed this farm with that “hard boot” wisdom anyone would be proud to own. Well-maintained turn-key farm consists of 44 stalls in 5 barns, shop, office, & 2 employee houses. Mature sycamore trees line the entrance to the charming main house with 2,2795 SF, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths built around a c.1772 log house. Excellent condition and well laid-out. $1,995,000.

THE KITCHEN FARM—A special farm that's been in the same family since 1947. Excellent, excellent soils and location! Tremendous road frontage on both Big Sink and Williams Lane. Adjoins Buck Pond and in the immediate area of Three Chimneys, WinStar, and Lane's End. Older home in a park-like setting in need of renovation but tons of character. 115 acres of fresh land which has had no horses on it since the 1990's.

BOURBON COUNTY—900 +/- ACRES—Developed into a horse farm in 2006, while offering tremendous frontage on two major roads (Hwy 627 and 57) and in the immediate area of Stone, Claiborne, Hidden Brook, and the newly-developed Sienna Farm. Comprised of 100 stalls in four barns, it also has over thirty miles of fencing, a newer 60’ x 80’ shop/equipment building, two employee houses, and two walkers. Beautiful land with several lakes and ponds. A wonderful opportunity to acquire a large tract of improved quality land in Bourbon County. Reduced to $7,775,000.

PAULS MILL—“The most special horse farm I’ve ever offered for sale; a true heaven on earth for horse and man!” - Bill Justice. Estate-quality 265 acre farm suitable for any discipline. Restored historic buildings and state-of-the-art facilities. Classic Federal style main residence consisting of 4,700 SF of gracious living area; stone grist mill (office or guest home) located on the banks of Clear Creek; a new stallion barn with attached breed-ing area and 1,850 SF lounge. 66 stalls in 8 barns, 5 additional houses plus 3 apartments. A perfect marriage of old and new. Incomparable beauty, character, and history! $8,500,000.

CLIFTON PIKE—This 150 acre farm is located just over a mile from Versailles with an elegant East Lake Victorian home constructed in the early 1900's and consisting of approximately 5,225 square feet with tall ceilings and ornate fireplaces and situated in a park-like setting. Excellent soils with over 140 acres of prime farm land—the best in the Bluegrass. A spectacu-lar blank canvas that's never been on the market!

BUOYANT FARRELL ON THE LOOKOUT AT KEENELANDBy Alastair Bull

It’s been a busy and successful week for Ma-

rette Farrell, but she’s still got work to do at

Keeneland.

The Kentucky-based bloodstock adviser was

at Australia's Magic Millions yearling sale a

week ago, working with fellow adviser John Adg-

er to buy a Aus$320,000 ($222,800) Snitzel filly

for Speedway Racing that will be trained by her

old boss, Gai Waterhouse.

Then Collected, a horse she and Adger also

bought for Speedway Racing, won the Sham

Stakes (gr. III) at Santa Anita Park Jan. 9.

Collected, who hails from the family of

Blushing Groom, was a $170,000 purchase from

Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s 2015 March Sale.

Farrell wasn’t at Santa Anita as she and her

team are looking for new horses at Keeneland’s

January sale, which starts Jan. 11.

“I always look for a horse with pedigree. I

don’t care if it’s in the fifth generation but it has

to go back to something that showed brilliance

at some point.

“I would prefer to walk away from a sale

and not have bought anything, rather than buy

something that I’m going to regret.” BH

RACING CLUB HORSES FEATURED AT PORTLANDBy Frank Angst

Besides launching a new sweepstakes

wager Monday at Portland Meadows,

track owner The Stronach Group hopes

to promote ownership through racing

clubs that allow a large number of peo-

ple to have small percentages in Thor-

oughbreds.

The National Racing Club 6 Sweep-

stakes will run weekly for up to five

weeks. The Stronach Group's Andy

Stronach bought horses throughout

North America and will lease them to

the regional racing clubs. The Stronach

Group has not finalized how interested parties

can acquire percentages in the horses.

Postponed last week because of weather, the

first six-race event, which includes a jackpot Pick

6 wager (20-cent minimum), is scheduled Jan. 11.

The track hopes to offer the races, contested at

just two furlongs, once a week up to five weeks.

Karsten Hennze, The Stronach Group's vice

president of corporate operations, said the owner

wants to be innovative at all its tracks and Port-

land Meadows, as a smaller track, is a great place

to try new ideas. BH

SEASON AUCTIONS IN A CONTRACTING MARKETBy Eric Mitchell

Groups such as the Thoroughbred Charities

of America that raise money by auctioning

stallion seasons face increasing challenges due to

contraction in the breeding industry.

Between 2012 and 2015, the number of total

active North America stallions has fallen 22% to

1,449, according to The Jockey Club, and TCA has

felt the pinch of this contraction.

In 2013, TCA's live auction offered 22 seasons

compared with 10 during the most recent auction

Jan. 9. Through the phone and online, the TCA sold

173 seasons in 2013 and around 150 this year.

Most seasons offered during this year's auc-

tion sold at or near their published stud fees.

The breakout sire of the night was Darley's star

Medaglia d'Oro, whose season (the only one of-

fered with a 2017 breed-back provision) sold for

$235,000. His published fee is $150,000.

An increasing awareness of aftercare is help-

ing offset some of the contraction. LNJ Foxwoods

stepped up, paying $30,000 to become the auc-

tion's top sponsor, and is making a long-term com-

mitment to helping the charity's mission. BH

GROWTH FROM ECONOMIC ASHESBy Eric Mitchell

Finding ways to make Thor-

oughbred racing more lucra-

tive for owners is a regular goal

for the sport. As opportunities

to recoup their investments

increase, the more owners will

invest and new owners may be

attracted.

A number of proposals have

been explored, but the after-

math of 2008's Great Recession

is having the greatest influ-

ence in achieving this goal.

By no means are the financial

losses suffered when global

economies ground to a halt in 2008-09 offset by

the gains seen in Thoroughbred purses. Howev-

er, it is apparent the fallout from the resulting

contraction has increased earning potential.

Between 2010 and 2015 the average earn-

ings per North American starter increased

32.6%, according to statistics on purses released

annually by The Jockey Club. In 2010 the average

earnings per starter was $16,308 and the medi-

an $6,250. By 2015, the average North American

earnings per starter was $21,632 and the medi-

an $9,225.

Declines in both the number of races and in

the foal crop contributed to the increase in av-

erage earnings. The number of races in the U.S.

and Canada dropped 17% between in 2010 and

2015, while the number of named 2-year-olds

dropped 33%.

Another interesting shift has been a rise

in the number of horses earning more than

$25,000. At the same time the number of horses

earning $7,500 or more has declined. This in-

crease at the top seems to indicate a reduction

largely in cheaper races. The number of run-

ners that earned $7,500 or more dropped from

31,506 in 2010 to 29,155 in 2015. During the

same period, the number of runners earning

$25,000 or more rose from 12,415 to 13,148.

The effect on the stallion market by the

smaller foal crops has been relatively insig-

nificant from a performance standpoint due

to a resulting decline in active stallions. The

average number of starters per stallion has

remained stable: 15.3 in 2010 and 15.1 in

2015. The average number of winners per

stallion was 7 in 2010 and 7.3 in 2015. There

was a slight increase in the average number

of wins per stallion from 11.5 in 2010 to 12

in 2015. Similar to the reduction in cheap-

er races, the economic turmoil reduced the

number of stallions represented by runners

that earned no money from 128 in 2010 to 60

by 2015.

The average progeny earnings per stallion

has increased significantly, rising 31% from

$249,961 in 2010 to $327,476 in 2015.

Economic downturns as severe as the

Great Recession are tough to live through,

but for the survivors they can create a strong-

er foundation for future growth. BH
