His parents who were both doctors raised him and his sisters, who would later become doctors themselves, in Des Moines, Iowa. He explained that because his family’s engagement in the medical field, he assumed that he would become a doctor and never had any second thoughts about it. He pursued his medical career until he was a Junior in high school. Silbermann decided that he wanted to pursue a field in business, so he became a consultant, in which Silbermann says, he did not know what he was signing up for because his entire workday consisted of making spreadsheets. Silbermann attended Yale University and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor’s in political science. In 2006, he worked with Google where he fulfilled the duties as a product specialist, designing, testing, and launching new products for advertising. Silbermann felt that his job at Google gave him the ability to think big, and he was amazed with the people who worked at Google and the products that they created. While Silbermann gained the obsession for creating products, he felt restrained because he knew was not an engineer. As a result, in 2008, Silbermann decided to resign from Google for he wanted to broaden his horizions in creating products. Later on, he met with his longtime college friend, Paul Sciarra, and together they started a compay that revolved around building iphone apps called Cold Brew Labs. Their first application was a catalog app called Tote. However, Silbermann and Sciarra were unsuccessful with Tote, and decided to abandon it.
