Vik Muniz Artist of Inspiration:

Who is Vik Muniz? •Vik Muniz was born in 1961 in Sao

Paulo, Brazil and is now a visual

artist in New York City.

•Muniz specializes in remaking

famous artworks with materials

other than paint, and then

photographing them.

• In 2010, the

documentary film

Waste Land, featured

Muniz's work on one of

the world's largest

garbage dumps,

Jardim Gramacho, on

the outskirts of Rio de

Janeiro. The film was

nominated for an

Academy Award for

Best Documentary.

• 1.5 Analyze the material used by a given

artist and describe how its use influences

the meaning of the work.

focusing on dominance and subordination.

• 2.6 Create a two or three-dimensional

work of art that addresses a social issue.

• Entire surface is covered with found

materials.

• A variety of objects, colors, and textures

are used to create visual interest.

• Has a distinct theme and/or method of

organization used to unify the piece (not

just a bunch of junk randomly hot-glue

together).

• How much junk do I need? Enough to fill an

entire brown paper grocery bag.

• Where can I find junk? Try your recycle bin

at home, kitchen junk drawer, under your

bed, the bottom of your backpack, the

garage, and look around on campus. It is

everywhere!

pages filled with several ideas): Friday

seniors!) *We will be glazing our pockets heads in the middle of

this project (Thursday 5/23 and Friday 5/24) so they will

be fired in time for seniors.
