E ]Welcome to the 17th annual Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival!
I’d like to share a quote that I think describes our general feeling toward photography. It is by Francis Hodgson, professor in the Culture of Photog- raphy at England’s University of Brighton. Mr. Hodgson is also photography critic for the Financial Times and former head of the photographs depart-ment at Sotheby’s.
“I still believe that photography is by far the most important medium of the latter part of the twentieth century—more important than prose and more important than cinema. No exaggeration. Photography is transna-tional; it’s transcultural. It is available to five-year-olds; it is available to professors of photography. It’s amazing how it is not a limited medium. No other medium equals it in its efficient transmission of powerful messages—certainly not prose. People are less literate than they were, but they are more literate in photographs than they used to be, and that is pretty powerful.”
Photography continues to grow and amaze us. So does ACP. Thanks to your support, we now have a staff of four (unprecedented!), a new office, and an ambitious five-year business plan that aims to realize our potential to generate cultural tourism to metro Atlanta and raise awareness of this city’s photo-loving, experience-loving culture. More than ever, it seems, you are ready to receive photography’s “transmission of powerful messages,” and we are ready to deliver!

Lynsey AddarioFEATURED PHOTOJOURNALIST CAPTURES PAINFUL REALITY OF WAR-TORN REGIONS
Lynsey Addario is undoubtedly one of the most notable photojournalists in the world. In 2009, she won a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant,” and in 2015, American Photo Maga-zine named her one of the five most influential photojournalists of the past 25 years. The Connecticut–born photographer has shot in conflict zones such as Darfur, Iraq, Afghani-stan, Libya, Lebanon, Congo, and most recently, on assignment in Syria. Her work has been featured in major national publications, including the New York Times, National Geo-graphic, and Time. She’s the author of an autobiography, It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War. And if Hollywood’s plans pan out, the film version of Addario’s life, directed

by Steven Spielberg and starring actress-of-the-moment Jennifer Lawrence, will soon make it to the silver screen. Addario is, by any mea-sure, an important photographer and journalist, but even so, as a female photojournalist working in war-torn regions, she’s a rarity among her peers. Yet, that distinction has lent her a critical perspective: She has been an unflagging chronicler of human rights issues, especially those affecting women. Addario calls her-self “a messenger of experiences,” and she has talked about a sense of mission in documenting the special horrors that befall women in war zones and in cultures where their
lives aren’t val-ued, from rape in the Congo to religious-based oppression in contemporary Afghanistan. “I feel a huge

pressure to be successful in com-municating their trauma,” Addario told Time magazine. Addario has herself fallen prey to such perse-cution when she and three other New York Times journalists cover-
ing Muammar el-Qaddafi’s waning days in Libya were kidnapped by Qaddafi’s soldiers and held prisoner for five days in 2011. See page 33 for information about an event with Lynsey Addario.

You don’t need an art adviser or a bottomless bank account to buy photography. Atlanta collectors Gregor Turk and Murphy Townsend know a passion for the art form does the trick. The pair, a visual artist and a physician respectively, collect the work of regionally and interna-tionally known artists, often displaying their finds in their Ansley Park home. Local names such as Stephanie Dowda, Todd Murphy, Angela West, and Peter Bahouth mingle with those of Diane Arbus, Vik Muniz, and Sylvia Plachy. Some of the pieces are on permanent display, but others rotate in and out of view.
Building a collection like this one isn’t easy—a truth to which both Turk and Townsend can attest. They’ve been collecting long enough to know the pitfalls beginning collectors face, and they warn against their own early mis-

takes: Don’t succumb to impulse buys or the lure of large-scale prints, which can be difficult to maintain, they say.
“I wouldn’t start collecting for investment,” Townsend says. Instead, collect because you love a work or photographer, or as Turk puts it, because “you’re compelled by a particular image or series.” Turk and Townsend recommend new collec-tors find out what they really like by seeing as much work as they can: Visit local museums and photography galleries, talk to gallerists (“Let them educate you,” Townsend says), and attend auctions and artist lectures. Magazines, books, and reviews help, too, as well as visiting other people’s collections to gain insight into their approach.
And of course, drink in as much as you can of the lectures, exhibitions, and events surrounding Atlanta Cel-ebrates Photography. The more you see, the more you will “get a sense of what fires you up,” Townsend says.

You love photography and want to explore it in greater depth, but a bachelor’s or master’s degree is not in your plans. Fortunately, the Atlanta area offers numerous classes and programs to help you broaden your photo skills without pursuing higher education. Better still, many area programs emphasize learning new techniques, skill building, and networking instead of grades, allowing aspiring photographers to focus on what they really want to do: perfect their craft.
Jan Fields, director of the Showcase School of Photog-raphy, says her program does just that. An easy, afford-able community education resource, Showcase offers day, evening, and weekend photography classes and a “non-pressure way to explore the art and craft of pho-tography and video.” No degrees. No tests. Students can opt to take more traditional classes such as composition and portraiture, or they can make more contemporary

the quality of instruction is unsurpassed,” Fields says.To gain valuable feedback on your work, join the
Atlanta Photography Group, whose members often take part in exhibitions, critiques, and discussions with visit-ing artists. Executive Director Beth Lilly says APG works with a variety of skill levels. “We have exhibitions that are accessible for beginners, some geared toward emerging artists, and others that require mature bodies of work,” she says. The group offers both juried and non-juried exhibition opportunities, and its critiques, Lilly says, are a great chance to network with fellow photographers.
The Roswell Photographic Society is a good option if you’re on a tight budget: The group meets twice a month, and its meetings are free and open to the public. Members enter monthly critiques, and a guest judge reviews their entries. Then, at the second meeting, they attend a lecture. President Gittel Price says speakers cover everything from shooting images with natural light to wedding photography. In addition, the group offers numerous exhibition opportunities and beginning-to-advanced classes for children and adults.
For the full photo shop experience, try the Photog-raphers Studio in the TULA Art Center. Director John Mason says the studio “provides affordable studio and classroom space, as well as printing, film scanning, pho-
tographic education and guidance” to learners of all ages. Photography classes include portrait photography, street photography, and studio lighting, but well-rounded artists can also learn salt, albumen, cyanotype, and platinum/palladium printing. Both evening and weekend classes are available for every skill level. “We have an extensive list of resources that help photographers build their career or portfolio,” Mason says. “In many ways, we’re an incubator for photographers.”

ACP PUBLIC ART: THE FENCE Through November 1 @ Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail
Back by popular demand! ACP is bringing THE FENCE project to Atlanta in partnership with United Photo Industries (of NY) and the Atlanta Belt-Line. Each year, a jury of 40+ photography professionals from around the world selects a group of 50 photographers whose work exemplifies the essence of “community” across cultural boundaries and geographical lines. This year, THE FENCE will be exhibited simultaneously in four loca-tions: Brooklyn Bridge park, Brooklyn, NY; Rose F. Kennedy Greenway, Boston, MA; The Houston Center for Photography, Houston, TX, and on the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail. Don’t miss this exhibition featuring over 700 feet of provocative photography.
ACP’s acclaimed public art program typically features temporary proj-ects in a variety of diverse locations throughout Atlanta. It is significant in its ability to reach beyond the audience of traditional arts venues and expand the way audiences consider lens-based media.

ACP SPECIAL EXHIBITION: "TEEN SPIRIT" October 2 @ Mason Fine Art
OPENING RECEPTION Fri, Oct 2, 6-9pm
Entering its 4th year, ACP’s collaborative program with inpatient teens at Scottish Rite and Egleston hospitals has impacted participants beyond everyone’s expectations. Volunteer photographers have been leading teens to explore their identity (including or in spite of their diagnosis) through writing and photographic self-portraiture.
Special thanks to Mason Fine Art, Charlotte Dixon, Corinne Adams, the Child Life Specialists, Showcase Photo & Video, and Digital Art Studio.
Admission is free. Free parking on site.

ACP LECTURE SERIES / ART PAPERS LIVE PRESENTS: ROE ETHRIDGE October 24 @ High Museum of Art, Hill Auditorium
LECTURE Sat, Oct 24, 2pm
This event is made possible through meaningful partnership with the High Museum of Art and is sponsored in part by Mailchimp.
Roe Ethridge (American, born 1969) studied photography at the Atlanta College of Art. Working within the classic genres of portrait, landscape, and still life photography, Ethridge integrates conceptual and commercial practices, at times using images already in circulation - including outtakes from his own editorial work. Ethridge’s work has been shown at institutions such as the Barbican Center (London), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston), and the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In 2011, he was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photog-raphy Prize. His first major retrospective, curated by Anne Pontégnie, was exhibited at Le Consortium in Dijon before traveling to Museum Leuven, Belgium, in 2012.
This program is free, however seating is limited and must be reserved through the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office at 404-733-5000. Limit two tickets per person. Tickets to the Museum are sold separately. Parking decks on site or take MARTA to Arts Center Station.

ACP LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS: LYNSEY ADDARIO October 26 @ Fernbank Museum of Natural History
LECTURE Mon, Oct 26, doors open at 6:30pm, lecture at 7pm
This lecture is in support of the exhibition "Women of Vision" on view at Fernbank Museum of Natural History September 26, 2015–January 3, 2016. (A selection of Lynsey’s images are included in this exhibition.) Attendees may view the "Women of Vision" exhibition immediately following the lecture.
Over the last 20 years, pre-eminent American photojournalist Lynsey Addario has documented a rapidly-changing world. Her photographs focus on humanitarian and human rights issues across the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa for The New York Times, National Geographic, and Time Magazine, and is represented exclusively by Getty Images Reportage.
In 2015, American Photo magazine named Lynsey as one of five most influential photographers of the past 25 years, saying she changed the way we saw the world's conflicts.
Lynsey has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the MacArthur 'Genius Grant' and the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, both in 2009. In 2010 Lynsey was named one of 20 women on Oprah Winfrey's Power List and one of Glamour magazine’s 20 women of the year in 2011.
She recently released a New York Times Best selling memoir, “It's What I Do,” which chronicles her personal and professional life as a photo- journalist coming of age in the post-9/11 world. It is her first book.

ACP COLLABORATION WITH PACE ACADEMY: KATHRYN KOLB October 29 @ Pace Academy
LECTUREThurs, Oct 29, doors open at 6pm to view exhibit, lecture starts at 7pm, followed by a book signing
After photographic beginnings in journalism photography, since the mid-1990s, Kathryn Kolb has focused her camera's lens on the natural forms of trees, plants and natural landscapes. With painstaking attention to composition, Kathryn finds images that resonate with the symmetries found within the fractal architecture of nature. As one viewer put it, "she is playing visual jazz with her camera."
Kathryn will discuss her own journey following nature’s designs that includes discussion of the layers of design we respond to when looking at images, and how our right and left-brain hemispheres shape the way we view photographs. In addition to her own work, Kathryn will show the work of other artists that illustrate her thoughtful observations on view-ing photographs, from the viewfinder to the final print.
For more info about the exhibition, please see Listing #102.
