CAMPUS SPOTLIGHTSMESSIAH

SING-ALONG

It has been 100 years since Taylor

University celebrated Christmas in

Fort Wayne. So when the FortWaynePhilharmonic approached the Uni-

versity with the opportunity to per-

form Handel's Messiah, there wastruly a reason to celebrate. Taylor

University Chorale and several

TUFW singers joined in performing

with the orchestra. It was a doublysignificant presentation in that itwasthe 250th anniversary of the writing

of Handel's Messiah and it was the

first time a Sing Along Messiah hadbeen performed in Fort Wayne.

Neighbors ofTUFW were invited

to attend the concert with a special

Christmas incentive of complimen-tary tickets. Taylor plans to con-

tinue the sing along format annu-ally, so plan to celebrate Christmasin this way with us next year!

Dr. Jay Kesler , Char Binkleyand Dr. Charles

Jaggers enjoy one of many "light" moments

during WBCL's 89.5 fm Kick-Off held in

Archbold, OH on November 8.

As a result offour years of diligent work, the

installation of two towers and the construc-

tion of a transmitter that operates at 20,000

watts, on November 30, WBCL extended its

signal about 40 miles in most directions of

Archbold, OH, simulcasting WBCL 's broad-

casting.

CELEBRATING A NEW TRADITION

As a result of the merger of

Summit Christian College

and TaylorUniversity onJulyl,1992,Taylor University returned, after 250

years, to the city of her founding ~

Fort Wayne.

To mark the special occasion, a

series of festivities entitled "Celebrat-

ing a New Tradition, " was set into

motion once students returned to

campus for the fall semester. Thecelebration included open houses

hosted by the Office of Admissions,

special chapel services, luncheons, a

ribbon cutting ceremony, a balloon

launch, a concert, alumni soccer

games and a family BBQ.

The festivities started onWednes-day, September 16, with a chapel

service featuring Taylor University

president. Dr. Jay Kesler. Immedi-ately following chapel a ribbon cut-

ting ceremony took place on the front

lawn of Witmer Hall by the newlyerected Taylor University, Fort

Wayne Campus sign. After the

reading of the Litany of Celebra-

tion, the event ended with a spec-

tacular balloon launch.

Thursday's activities included a

concert by "The Talleys" and Friday

the Fort Wayne campus was privi-

leged to have Dr. William Pannell,

Fort Wayne Bible College alumnusand current Taylor trustee, as guest

chapel speaker.

The "Celebrating aNew Tradition"

activities came to a close Saturday,

September 19, with alumni soccer

games and a Fort Wayne campusfamily BBQ. Over 700 people cametogether for fantastic food and fel-

lowship.

"Celebrating a New Tradition" of-

fered a great opportunity to celebrate

the merger of the two institutions

and the return of Taylor University

to Fort Wayne. Throughout the fes-

tivities the last words of the Litany of

Celebration were a constant reminder

of the true reason for celebration

"We celebrate the molding of two

great traditions into a single newtradition , energized by the testing

ofmore than a century, and proven

in the crucible of God's provi-

dence. We pledge ourselves to the

ongoing challenge of providing a

quality educational experience in

harmony with the precepts ofGod,

in whatever capacity our relation-

ship to the University should dic-

tate. We invoke the blessing of

God upon this neiv tradition welaunch today — Taylor University

Jay Kesler

President,

Taylor University

Itis a special privilege to thank you for your sacrificial and generous gifts

to Summit Christian College during the 1991-92 school year. Thenumerous expressions of support during this year of merger were truly

outstanding. As a result of your gifts, students were helped, a dedicated faculty

was supported and the administration was able to meet critical needs to help in

God's work at Fort Wayne.

As one who is well acquainted with gift support for colleges and ministries, I realize

that the record of giving for this institution has been outstanding. Historically, SummitChristian College alumni have given at a level and with a frequency and quantity far

above what is considered average for an institution of its size.

Beyond your financial support, thank you for your encouragement at an even deeperlevel. Throughout the merger and transition of this past year many of you have written

encouraging letters and continually prayed for the leaders.

We believe God has intervened to sustain the workHebegan on this campus nearly onehundred years ago. Through God's grace, the merger, and your faithful giving, this workcontinues. Wes Gerig, Alice Joy Weddle, Dave Biberstein and Arlan Birkey are familiar

faces you would recognize if you visited campus today. Eddie Reynolds, Don Hamm,Richard Baxter and Carolyn Arthur are also part of the familiar, dedicated staff whocontinue at Taylor University Fort Wayne. Char Binkley and her committed staff are

continuing the great radio ministry of WBCL.

The college that you have known and loved has now become a part of my leadership

responsibilities. We are going to great lengths to preserve the programs and heritage that

have made this college a beacon of Christian higher eduation for nearly a century.

Thank you for standing with us in this great step of faith. Please remember us in yourprayers as we look to the future. We are and will continue to be greatly dependent on the

Lord as well as your prayers and financial support. By God's grace we will be goodstewards of your gifts and the sacred responsibility now entrusted to us.

Paul Steiner

Former Chairman of

Summit Christian College

Board of Governors

Current member of Taylor

University Board of Trustees

ver the past year, a lot has happened on the Fort Wayne campus. We have a newname, a new administration, and a new board. Yet, much remains the same - a

commitment to training Christian leaders, familiar faculty, and many returning

students. The campus is simply now part of a larger vision and new opportunities for

greater impact are evident.

Responses to the merger ofSummit Christian College and Taylor University have beenoverwhelmingly positive. In talking with faculty, students, alumni and even neighbor-

hood residents, I find enthusiasm for their association with Taylor.

A year before the merger. President Don Gerig and I met a number of times to discuss

the future of the college and joined in prayer to learn what the best course would be. Withthe approval of the board, we approached Taylor officials. Jay Kesler and Daryl Yost,

about the possibility of exploring a merger of the two institutions. With so much in

common, it seemed a natural thing to pursue.

Not long after, a study was set in motion by Taylor. The rest is history: the joining of

two of the finest Christian colleges in the nation. One, outstanding among Bible colleges,

the other at the top in academics and character building among small Christian liberal arts

colleges and universities.

Now Taylor University, Fort Wayne, as much as ever, needs the financial and prayer

support of all its alumni and friends. There are great opportunities for the ministry of this

university, and they will not be met without everyone's continued help.

It has been my privilege to serve on the board of Summit Christian College for manyyears. I have been a strong supporter of this wonderful institution. Don Gerig wasoutstanding in his leadership as president for the past six years. We owe him a great debt

of gratitude for his tireless service and insights. I join a great host of friends in wishinghim the very best from the Lord in his new pastoral ministry.

Now as a member of Taylor's board of trustees, I will continue my support of the Fort

Wayne campus, and I ask you to do the same. There are good things ahead. The future

is bright for Taylor University in Fort Wayne.

Sixteen years since its beginning, the ministry of WBCL continues to fill the air waves with quality Christian program-ming 24 hours a day. And it wouldn't be possible without generous listeners! God has used your prayers and gifts to

touch the lives of thousands as they daily tune to WBCL for the hope and love found in the message of Jesus Christ.

ALUMNI PROFILES

Evelyne Schmidt

When Andrew Schmidt andEmihe KHewer left Kansasin 1 905 to attend FortWayne

Bible Institute, I doubt if they thought

they had started a family tradition.

The two later got married and hadseven children, five of whom at-

tended FWBC. Of the five, none wasmore dedicated to her school thantheir daughter Evelyne.

Evelyne enrolled in 1940 as a stu-

dent at Fort Wayne Bible College.

Staying only 2 1/2 years, she re-

turned to Kansas. Over the next 15

years, she worked in MissionaryChurches and in various manage-ment positions.

While a student at FWBC, Evelynehad become acquainted with the

Dean and professor. Dr. Witmer. Hehad kept in contact with her over the

years through various MissionaryConferences. Now as president andknowing of her previous experience

in bookkeeping, he asked Evelyne to

return to her Alma Mater to work in

the business office. She left her homein 1957 to make her permanent homein Fort Wayne to fill the position of

and faithfully serve as Head Book-keeper for the next 30 years. Herdedication to the school did not endwith her retirement, however.

She continues her service to the

campus as a volunteer for the an-

nual Phonathon, as a member of the

Alumni Board and as receptionist,

where she spends her afternoons.

Evelyne says of the school andstudents, "They're a part of my life. I

enjoy the students' vivaciousness. .

.

I believe being receptionist is morethan a job, it is a way to be part of

their lives as they prepare for Chris-

tian service."

Pliil & Jan Logan

Phil Logan's desire to be a

missionary began in child-

hood, when missionaries

visited his church. Similarly, mis-

sionaries visited Jan (Schumacher)Logan's church and stayed at her

home; however, she did not share

her future husband's desire to be a

missionary, even though she felt the

Lord's call into the field. It wasn't

until a Spiritual Emphasis speakerspoke in Chapel thatJan experienced

the desire to be a missionary. Thespeaker suggested that the students

pray that God would make themwilling to do His will; she prayed,

and He made her willing.

Not long after this Phil and Janbegan to date. On their first date

they discussed their interests andmajors in missions, and aspiration

to go to Sierra Leone. . .the place they

would later spend 15 years together

as missionaries.

They married in 1 967 and went to

Africa in 1 971 , to build churches andevangelize. During their first years

of evangelism in Sierra Leone, they

gained practical knowledge of the

language which they used in their

missionary work as translators. Phil

and Jan were working on translating

the Old Testament in 1992 (they had87% of the project completed) whenfighting broke out in Sierra Leoneand they were sent back to the U.S.

With so much of their lives invested

there, the Logans were disappointedto leave; they eagerly anticipate their

scheduled return in the summer of

1993.

Phil and Jan Logan credit their

knowledge, preparation and desire

to evangelize and translate to their

professors at FWBC. Jan added that

her stability in her Christian life camefrom her years as a student at FWBCand from the lifestyle examples of

her dedicated professors.

PHONATHONOur special thanks to faithful

alumniwho continue to see the value

of scholarship assistance for today's

students. This year we were able to

award $1 ,000 scholarships to 25 wor-thy students, all of the $25,000 com-ing from interest earned on the

Alumni Scholarship EndowmentFund (now over $295,000).

PHONATHON '92 was held this

fall from October 13 to November11. Over 200 alumni sent in their

gifts or pledges by mail before the

PHONATHON began. Alumni call-

ers talked to over 800 alumni on the

six nights of calling. Pledges in the

mail and over the phone amountedto $30,360. Although we did not

reach our goal of $45,000 we werevery pleased with the responses andattitudes of alumni during this first

year of merger with Taylor Univer-

sity. The Alumni Scholarship En-dowment Fund will continue to as-

sist men and women studying onthis campus with special consider-

ation being given to children of

alumni and men and women pre-

paring for Christian ministry. Thankyou for being involved in this very

worthy project.
