CME’s 4th Annual Energy Excellence Event

For the Real (Business) World

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the Canadian Industry Program for

Energy Conservation (CIPEC) are pleased to host your luncheon speaker Helmi Ansari,

Director Sustainability and Productivity at Frito Lay a CIPEC leader company and a

recipient of a CIPEC Leadership Award.

CIPEC is a voluntary industry-government partnership established to improve Canada’s

Industrial Energy Efficiency. The CIPEC program is administered by NRCan. CIPEC is

made up of 26 sector task forces covering more than 50 trade associations. Each task

force represents companies that are engaged in similar industrial activities. Individual

companies are encouraged to join the program as a CIPEC Leader. At its bi-annual

industrial energy efficiency conferences, CIPEC presents the CIPEC Leadership

Awards to recognize Canadian companies that have demonstrated a significant and

innovative contribution to energy efficiency. The next conference is planned for

November 2011.

Part of CIPEC’s mandate is to foster strong communications and awareness, which is

partially done through its biweekly Heads Up CIPEC newsletter, with a readership of

over 8,000 subscribers. You can subscribe to this FREE newsletter at the web-site at

www.cipec.ca.

Energy efficiency training is also available through NRCan’s Dollars to $ense Energy Management Workshops. There are upcoming workshops in Halifax: Energy Management Planning - April 27th; and Energy Efficiency Financing - April 28th.

Topic: Discussing how a new international standard currently being developed, will make you more globally competitive. ISO 50001 will help improve efficiency of enterprise energy management by: Providing benchmarking, measuring, documenting and report ing guidance, facilitating communication and creating transparency regarding the management of energy sources, assisting in evaluation and prioritization of new technologies, and helping promote energy efficiency through the supply chain.

Karen Martin, Principle Consultant,Karen Martin & Associates...Profit Through Simplicity

Topic: Karen will discuss key lean principles as they apply to energy consumption, including the role that creating an "energy value stream map" plays in finding innovative ways across an enterprise to reduce, recycle, and repurpose energy sources. The result will be the ability to deliver higher quality goods & services at a faster pace with lower cost, while shrinking our environmental footprint.

Topic: Helmi will share his experience in delivering sustainability solutions for energy problems facing manufacturers, using the breakthrough vision of his firm Frito Lay Canada as an example. Frito Lay is the first manufacturer world-wide to introduce a compostable chip bag for their prime Sun Chip product and demonstrate their commitment to Performance with Purpose by introducing a100% electric vehicle fleet.

Peter Corbyn, P.Eng, President, Binary Oak Topic: His presentation will summarize his project findings and sharing methods of more than 20 automotive parts manufacturing facilities, who realized over $600,000 in energy savings since 2009.

David Baxter – VP Innovation, T4G Limited

As the VP of Innovation at T4G, David’s role is to foster a

culture of realizing customer value from T4G’s richest

resource, their talented and creative people. David enables

innovation initiatives and new ventures that contribute to

T4G's growth and long-term success from new or expanded

markets, and new emerging services.

David is the business lead on T4G’s latest initiative to provide a web based Energy

Management Information System (EMIS) to operationalize energy management in the

industrial and manufacturing sectors.

David brings 20 years of telecommunications and technology experience with industry

leaders like NBTel, MT&T, iMagicTV and Alcatel. David’s product development and

commercial launch firsts include MT&T's MPoweredPC, the 1998 launch of 7MBPS

consumer DSL service with on-demand software applications, and the development and

management of world class iMagicTV and Alcatel IPTV middleware platforms and

applications for telecom digital TV.

Michael Burke, Director, Industrial Programs, ES/OEE/IPD

Natural Resources Canada

Michael Burke is the Director of the Industrial Programs Division of

the Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada. The

Industrial Programs Division promotes and supports energy

efficiency and GHG reductions by Canadian industries across

Canada. This is achieved through a suite of programs and services

including: an industry-led network of energy efficiency champions

called the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation

(CIPEC); the Industrial Energy Innovators program which provides

industrial energy audit incentives and related information; Engineering and Technical

Services which provides benchmarking studies, technical guidelines, and acts as the

Technical Authority for Class 43.1 of the Income Tax Act ; Training and Workshops for

energy efficiency; and Communications via newsletters and reports.

Prior to his current job, Michael held several positions with Natural Resources Canada

over the past 18 years. Most recently he was a Science and Technology Director at

CANMET in Bells Corners (near Ottawa) with responsibility for industry programs and

combustion pilot plants and laboratories. Before this, he was the manager of a program

to enhance the installation and operation of boilers and cogeneration systems. He also

served as an officer in a cost-share R&D program to help companies improve their

energy efficiency.

Prior to joining the government, Michael was an on-site start-up engineer and then a

project leader for 7 years with a company, which designed, manufactured and installed

large steam generation systems. Michael is a Professional (Mechanical) Engineer and

has an MBA.

Karen Martin, Principal Consultant, Karen Martin & Associates

Karen Martin, Principal Consultant for Karen Martin & Associates,

is a recognized thought leader and practitioner in applying Lean

thinking to office, service and knowledge work. She leads and

provides lean transformation support to organizations in a broad

range of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare,

government, financial services, energy, pharmaceuticals, law

enforcement, and research and development.

In addition to her 17 years as an operations design and organizational performance

improvement consultant, Karen is a passionate Lean educator. She holds a Master’s

Degree in adult education and receives high marks for her balanced approach between

achieving aggressive, short-term results and the workforce and leadership development

that accelerates Lean transformations. She's an instructor for the University of

California, San Diego’s Lean Enterprise program and an Industry Advisor for University

of San Diego’s Industrial and Systems Engineering Program.

She’s a licensed clinical laboratory scientist, co-author of The Kaizen Event Planner:

Achieving Rapid Improvement in Office, Service, and Technical Environments and co-

developer of Metrics-Based Process Mapping. She's currently at work on a book about

the four behaviors that hold organizations back from achieving the levels of operational

excellence that they’re capable of.

Helmi Ansari, Director, Sustainability and Productivity, PepsiCo Foods Canada

Helmi is a consumer packaged goods industry professional with

expertise in operations management, sustainable corporate and

supply chain transformation, and organizational capability. He has

also experience from having worked in manufacturing supply chains

in over a dozen food and pharmaceutical manufacturing plants across

North America with leading companies.

Currently Helmi is the Director of Sustainability and Productivity with

PepsiCo Foods Frito Lay Canada where he is responsible for leading

the company’s agenda on environmental sustainability, strategic

financial planning, and organizational capability for operations.

He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arkansas, an MBA

from the University of Western Ontario, and is a PhD candidate in Business-

Sustainability with the TUM school of Business in Munich, Germany.

Helmi and his wife have 3 daughters, and they are settled in Cambridge Ontario.

Allan Crandlemire, Interim CEO, Efficiency Nova Scotia Corporation

Allan Crandlemire was appointed interim CEO of the Efficiency Nova

Scotia Corporation in May 2010. Previously he was Executive Director

for Conserve Nova Scotia after extensive experience with the Nova

Scotia Department of Energy.

Efficiency Nova Scotia, an independent Corporation, took over

managing electricity efficiency programs in the Province from Nova

Scotia Power last Fall. The Corporation is currently in discussions with

the Provincial Government about managing efficiency and conservation

programs for other fuels. The electricity efficiency plan and programs are regulated by

the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.

Stephen Crane is responsible for the Business Development aspects

for Efficiency Nova Scotia Commercial, Industrial and Institutional

programs. Stephen was previously with Nova Scotia Power as part of

the Demand Side Management division promoting Energy Efficiency

programs to clients throughout the province. Stephen was previously

the President of an Industrial Distribution business that serviced the

Industrial, Construction, Manufacturing and Commercial sectors

throughout Atlantic Canada. He is a graduate of Acadia University

with a degree in Business.

Peter Corbyn, P.Eng., President, Binary Oak

Peter began helping Canadian businesses and homeowners save energy and reduce their environmental footprint in the early 1990’s.

His past activities include launching the first Employee Energy Awareness Program in Ontario, Canada in 1992 for his employer at the time, Woodbridge Foam Corporation. He was the Environment Director for the Canadian Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association in Toronto from 1996 to 2000.

Peter is a co-founder of GreenNexxus and Binary Oak, developers of sustainability focused Internet campaigns and Software-as-a-Service, including the award winning Cisco Systems and CBC One Million Acts of Green campaign.

Peter co-developed and has applied the Lean and Green process of Environment and Energy Value Stream Mapping (EnVSM) in a number of sectors. He is currently managing an energy efficiency based program based on lean principles in partnership with Natural Resources Canada and the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association.

He is also managing the Cleaner and Green Manufacturing Program based on the recently passed Toxic Reduction Act in Ontario in partnership with Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Ontario, OCETA and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

He was awarded the Canadian National Clean Air Day Award in 2007 for Excellence in Efficiency Outreach. He is also the co-author of Cool Comforts – Bargaining for Our

Survival, which has over 15,000 copies in circulation.

Peter graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1987 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
