B-thrifty featured on NBC’s the “TODAY” show!

On Monday, March 5, B-Thrifty went nation-wide and beyond! NBC’s Today Show host, Janice Leiberman, featured B-Thrifty on a segment highlighting the growing popularity of resale stores.

“The struggling economy has prompted many consumers to save money by shopping at resale stores,” Ms. Leiberman said, “and they’re finding quality deals there.”

“At B-Thrifty, outside of Washing-ton, D.C., shoppers get a free mem-bership card and save 30% on all purchases. All kinds of stuff here,” she exclaimed.”

The show continued by emphasiz-ing that 18% of Americans will shop at thrift stores, approaching the 21% who shop at department stores.

Throughout the show, images of the B-Thrifty store and shoppers

were prominent. The B-Thrifty mar-keting staff has been very busy fielding calls for BIP membership cards since the program aired. The video can now be viewed on the B-Thrifty website, www.b-thrifty.com, as well as You Tube.

Providence Church appreciates B-Thrifty(... and B-Thrifty appreciates Providence Church)

Pastor Tim Floyd of Providence Baptist Church has this to say about B-Thrifty:

In an internet era of change that is not only constant but instant, one of our pri-orities at Providence Baptist Church is flexibility. We want to be smart enough to adapt our methods, and quick enough to seize an opportunity before it is too late. So when Dale Keaton suggested a new ministry model to this pastor, he was eager to consider it. In a very short time, the results are quite promising.

In a brand new partnership with B-Thrifty, our people recycle clothing and household items they no longer need nor have room to store. Those goods accumulate in attractive and handy bins provided by B-Thrifty until they are picked up and carried away. In return, we receive B-Thrifty pre-paid gift cards which can be spent in their store to pur-chase needed merchandise from the vast inventory. Our church has incor-porated those B-Thrifty dollars into our ongoing benevolence program to des-perate and needy people in our area.

Last week, one of our staff members met with a widow and her small child who had just found a permanent place to live after two years of being on the street. As part of our Emergency As-sistance Interview, he spoke with her about her background, her basic physi-cal needs, and her spiritual needs. He was able to share the gospel with her and pray with her. Afterward, the church was able to provide her with our cus-tomary grocery gift cards plus some-thing new: gift cards for her to purchase

clothing and furniture for her new living space. Before B-Thrifty, we would have had no practical wayto help her get back on her feet again.

We consider our partnership with B-Thrifty a win-win situation. Our members have an easy way to recycle used goods through a reliable organization we can feel good about; our neighbors who are in need get clothing and household goods; B-Thrifty has a larger inventory; and our church has a new avenue for expressing the love of Christ.

From the beginning, B-Thrifty has been about “helping the helpers”. We have supported several non-profit organizations with their mission during our brief 6-months history.

One of the charitable groups that caught the atten-tion of B-Thrifty is A Wider Circle founded 10 years ago by Dr. Mark Bergel. This organization has al-ready served the needs of over 80,000 children and adults, providing beds, cribs, dressers, and more to those in urgent need.

On a couple of Saturdays in January, B-Thrifty founding member, Alonso Zamora, and several employees spent many hours working with a few volunteers of Wider Circle and NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers) organizing their warehouse to make room for additional bed-ding and furniture to have ready on short notice for those in immediate need. Appreciating the vision and dedi-cation of A Wider Circle, Mr. Zamora has said, “B-Thrifty will do whatever we can to support the mission and activity of A Wider Circle.”

A decade ago, Dr. Bergel required his students at American University to provide community service work. During this process, he discovered numerous situations where parents were rearing children with no beds or other furniture to speak of, and little or no access to resources for help. He learned from shelter managers about the desperate need for edu-cational programs on topics such as stress manage-ment, nutrition, and other life skills.

With no seed money but with a strong conviction that we could do better for those living in poverty, Mark decided to drop everything else in life and con-verted his living room into a nonprofit office. He founded A Wider Circle with a goal to create an or-ganization that would address “the whole person” with programs that would not only relate to people’s tangible needs but also to their “inner” needs.

Mark does not sleep on a bed of his own. He ends the often 17-hour work days by collapsing on his couch or floor, pledging to not sleep on a bed until every child and adult in the country has a bed to sleep in.

The Catalogue for Philanthropy calls A Wider Cir-cle “one of the finest charities Washington DC has to offer.” Today, operating out of The Center for Com-munity Service in Silver Spring, Maryland,

Prince William Senior Centers Memberships AcceptedWoobridge and Manassas

The Prince William Senior Centers at Manassas and Woodbridge are now accepting annual memberships of $25. The senior centers are designed for independent seniors, 55 years of age or older. The membership is required for participation in all activities and programs beginning March 1, 2012.

People 60 years of age and older who participate sole-ly in the nutrition lunch program at either senior center will not be required to have a membership, but activities will be restricted to just those offered as part of the nutri-tion program.

Both the Manassas and Woodbridge Senior Centers have been in operation for over 25 years. They are open Monday-Friday, from 9am to 4:30 p.m. - except for gov-ernment holidays, the last Wednesday of each month and when schools are closed for inclement weather. The Centers are closed the week between Christmas and New Year’s and the week of July 4.

Los Centros para personas mayores de Prince William en Manassas y Woodbridge están aceptando membre-sías anuales de $25. Los centros para personas may-ores están diseñados para personas independientes, de 55 años de edad o más.

One of the nice things about living in Prince William County is that we are so close to so many places and things to do. Within our county there is always music, sports, parks, activities, and civic life. Here are some of my favorites:

Arts & EntertainmentWe have a number of movie theaters.

However, we also have live music, plays and exhibitions at the Hylton Perform-ing Arts Center in Manassas. Some of the upcoming events includes arts exhibits, the Manassas Symphony Or-chestra, the Manassas Chorale, Shake-speare’s Romeo & Juliet, and an Irish dance troupe: Celtic Nights performing Journey of Hope.

The Jiffy Lube Live Center is in nearby Bristow. Live music of all kinds is always playing. Some of the upcom-ing artists and performers: the Dave Matthews Band, Iron Maiden and the 2012 Country Mega Ticket featuring Miranda Lambert, Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith, Sugarland, Brad Paisley, and Ja-son Aldean.

Farmers MarketsWe have at least two farmers mar-

kets. One is in Dale City by the Com-cast office on Sundays. The other is on Saturday in Old Town Manassas next to the train station. Both offer many dif-ferent kinds of fresh fruits and vegeta-bles. You can also find find some great fresh baked breads and pies.

Art, Entertainment and Funin Prince William County

Water Parks and SwimmingEach end of our county offers an

outdoor water park. Water Works is in Dale City at Andrew Leitch Park. Ma-nassas offers the Splash Down Water Park which is much larger and offers a water river to float down -- one of my favorite things to do.

We also have four public outdoor swimming pools at Veteran’s Park, Graham Park, Birchdale Pool and at Hammill Mill Pool. All are in Wood-bridge area.

If you prefer you can also swim in-doors the entire year round by going to the Chinn Aquatic Center or to the Dale City Recreation Center. If you are in the Manassas area you should visit the Freedom Aquatics and Fit-ness Center.

History and FoodIf you want good food, a nice view of

the river to eat your meal at, and then want to walk it off in some nice sur-roundings then go to the Town of Oc-coquan. You will find lots of history, nice architecture, and some great food. Occoquan even boasts a nice Belgian restaurant called the ‘Cock and Bowl’ just off the beaten path on Poplar Alley.

1) Your Credit Will BE Ruined For Ever. A Myth!

Just because your file for bankrupt-cy, it doesn’t mean that your credit will be ruined forever. Most people who file have a credit score around the 500 range and when your bankruptcy is discharged and the balances on your credit cards are zeroed out, it will actu-ally help boost your score.

2) Your Bankruptcy is Revealed to Family. A Myth!

Your bankruptcy is not revealed to family and friends. It is public record however news papers do not publish this information. Unless one checks through the Bankruptcy court venues or seeks the information through the credit and financial industry, it is not noticed by your friends and family.

3) Your Non-Filing Spouse’s Credit Will Be Ruined. A Myth!

Your non-filing spouse’s credit score will not be ruined because you filed for bankruptcy. Contrary to popular be-lief, your bankruptcy remains your own and will not show up on your spouse’s records. Many years ago Congress passed the Equal Credit Opportunity Act which allows you to have separate credit as opposed to joint.

La calificación de su cónyuge no será arruinada debido a que Usted se declaró en quiebra. Contrariamente a la creencia popular, el proceso de quiebra es individual y no se mostrará en los registros de crédito de su cón-yuge. Hace muchos años, el Con-greso aprobó la Ley de Igualdad de Oportunidad de Crédito que le permite tener un crédito por separado en lu-gar de tenerlo conjuntamente con su cónyuge.


Anyone can turn his/her financial life around if they just take that first step. Like physical exercise, the first step in financial fitness is always the hardest.

What follows are seven steps to con-sider. Each one is a simple move you can make to improve your financial health. Perhaps one or more of these will apply to you.

1. Turn off the television. One big way to save money is to watch less TV. There are many financial benefits to this: less exposure to guilt-inducing ads; more time to focus on other more important things; less electrical use, etc. It’s great to unwind in the evening, but try to think of more creative, less expensive ways of relaxing.

2. Evaluate your “collections.” Many people collect things. What do you collect? Is it something that consistently brings you joy, or is it something that you just do out of habit at this point? Does the collection itself have value? Could you just “trim the fat” from this collection by getting rid of duplicates or getting rid of the items you no longer use? Also, could you cut down spending on that hobby?

3. Call you credit card company and ask for a rate deduction. Take any of the credit cards that are carrying a bal-ance, flip them over, and call the number on the back. Tell them that you want an interest rate reduction or you will take your business elsewhere. If the first per-son you talk with says no, ask to speak to a supervisor. If you have a $5,000 balance, even a 3% reduction will save you $150 a year.

4. Clean out your closet. Go through your closets and “prune.” You can have

a yard sale and make some good pocket money. If you don’t want to go to that trou-ble, recycle these items by donating them to your favorite charity or thrift store (B-Thrifty comes to mind).

5. Drink more water. Not only does drinking plenty of water have great health benefits, water drinking has financial ben-efits, too. Drink a big glass of water before each meal...not only will you digest it better, you won’t eat as much. You will doing your body as well as you pocketbook a favor. You will find yourself feeling a bit better as you begin to get adequately hydrated.

6. Cut back on convenience foods, fast foods, microwave meals, etc. In-stead of eating fast food or just nuking some prepackaged food when you get home, try making some simple and healthy replacements that you can take with you. An hour’s worth of preparation one week-end can give you a lot of cheap and handy meals that will end up saving you cash.

7. Give up expensive habits like ciga-rettes, alcohol, and drugs. Those habits cause money to flow away from you with nothing of value in return. Summon your fortitude and work hard to kick the habits and you will find that money will stay in your pocket instead of burning up or float-ing away.
