Goals:The Committee wants to widespread and promote the figure and theartistic works of Maestro Pietro Mascagni. It looks forward to realize thefollowing goals:

• celebration of anniversaries of his life and his works

• Organization and realization of promotional events in Italy and in theworld

• Organization of initiatives and collaborations with private and publicorganizations and companies, for co-branding products and merchan-dising

• Creation and digitalization of the archives of manuscripts, reproductionof his works and all his documents and all good coming from his lifeand artistic activity

• Production of paper, digital documents and multime-dial products (CD-DVD)

Pietro Mascagni, the artist and the man(Livorno 1863 - Rome 1945)

He was a successful musician. From 1890 onwards and with thetriumphant of his opera, Cavalleria Rusticana, he managed forover half a century to keep interest high in the major Italian, Euro-pean and American Theatres. He was a versatile Orchestra Direc-tor, a Music Composer for the cinema and a grand well knownpersonality. He was truly a phenomenon of his times. He was evenfamous for his proverbial full head of hair. According to popularlegends, Mascagni was identified with the mythical image of thehappy man who blends together in himself youth and fame. He isthe irresistible prototype of the Latin race,extrovert, dressed andgroomed very well. He has been an ingenious and eclectic com-poser, open minded to every change and stimulus coming fromthe great writers of his times (Verga - D’Annunzio). He composed14 operas, among them L’Amico Fritz, Guglielmo Ratcliff, Iris , Lemaschere, Piccolo Marat, Parisina, Nerone, and all through hislife, he tried new ideas on music, even for the cinema: he was thefirst Italian musician to realize in 1915,the entire sound track ofthe movie Rapsodia Satanica.

The figure and works of Pietro Mascagni are an important culturalheritage not only for Italy, but even for the entire world. He deve-loped an incredible artistic experience between the 19° and 20°centuries, as a protagonist and a witness of the big changes ofthis period in arts, customs, economics and politics.In this period, he was a star, beloved and cheered by the crowdon both sides of the Ocean. As a real pop star of today he createdand anticipated trends of fashion, on clothing and hair style.The clashes and the big friendship with Puccini, the beginningsmade of precarious economic conditions and the success for bothof them, divided by the competition oftheir editors Sonzogno and Ricordi. The artistic meeting with the MaestroVerdi and with Gabriele D’Annunzioand the birth of the opera Parisina.And more, his love for painting andhis friendship with the famous pain-ters Nomellini, Fattori, Previati .

Pietro Mascagni, Restless SpiritHe travelled in Europe, in Russia, he arrived in the Usa in 1903and stayed for 6 months (New York, Boston, Baltimora, San Fran-cisco etc.). In 1911 he represented the Premiere of Isabeau in Bue-nos Aires and remained in South America for a long whileHe was the first Italian conductor for Ciajkovskij (Symphony nr. 6)and Dvorak (Symphony nr. 9) and he is still known and appreciatedin USA, Germany and Asia.

MASCAGNI AND THE CINEMASeveral Directors used his music for very important and succes-sful movies:• Francis Ford Coppola (“The Godfather, part III”)• Martin Scorsese (“Raging Bull” with Robert de Niro)• Paolo Virzì (sound track of “La Prima cosa bella”)

Many of them commented his music• Ennio Morricone: He appreciates him as the first composer of

sound track for the cinema and shares with him commentsabout the problems met with the moviola.

• Nicola Piovani: His passage from the pop music to the classicmusic arrived through the sound of L’Amico Fritz
