First off, a great big thank you goes out to the 17 people that
attended the First Aid Class. We also had 2 more from Co-
coa show up which made for a great class. Would also like
to mention how wonderful the venue was where it was held.
Thanks to John Cain (ride educator) who set everything up,
including the banquet of food and drink he brought. GOOD
SHOW JOHN!!!!!!!!!
Speaking of John, he has had his knee surgery and on his way to recovery. I
hope it feels a lot better than it did before.
Would like to mention that Mike Roben is home from the physical therapy and
is doing great. A shout out to John Sevelius, he also just had a knee replace-
ment. Hope everything is going good for you John.
And last but not least……..on May 10th , Harry fell and ended up with a com-
pression fracture in his lower spine. It hasn't been easy but he is SLOWLY GET-
TING BETTER. The Doctors say about 3 months. Boy oh boy I should call this
the American Red Cross article.
Good bye to our snow birds and hope to see them next year….The good lord will-
ing and the creek don't rise.(remember who said that??????)
See you at the meeting. Oh that reminds me…..this is double points month for us,
so be sure and let our guest sit at the main table.

The circle of life……………
Age 4…. success is…..not peeing your pants
Age 12….success is….having friends.
Age 16….success is….having a drivers license
Age 25….success is….having sex (married)
Age 35….success is …having money
Age 50….success is….having friends
Age 60….success is….having health
Age 70….success is …having sex (hopefully)
Age 75….success is …having a drivers license
Age 80….success is….not peeing in your pants
I think we all have passed thru each and every one of these phases. (Hopefully not the last
one yet.) Did you happen to notice that Friends came up twice???? There is a reason for
that. You see no matter where you go or what you do, having friends plays a great part in
your life.
At the risk of sounding morbid, I must ask you…. How many times have you read or seen
on T.V. about a murder , suicide, or act of cruelty. Well nowadays that is every day. But
what is usually the one thing used to describe the person involved??????? ANSWER:
They were a loner. Why they were loners, I haven't clue, but it does make a good case for
having friends.
I know all of you have friends, some friends are close friends, some are good acquaintan-
ces, and some are what we call causal friends. No matter the category they are in, it is nice
to know we have friends.
Let me say this to you…..Gold Wing Road Riders Association. That's right. It appears in
our motto "Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge". Every time you go to a rally or a
"meet and eat"… there they are….YOUR FRIENDS.
I have talked with many people that, while on trips have broken down or had an accident
….got out the Gold Book and made a call to a complete stranger for help and learned that
this was a friend they just hadn't met yet.
So just remember, with GW there is ALWAYS friends. Maybe even friends that don't mind
if you pee your pants.
Remember FRIEND; Watch out for the guy behind the guy in front of you.
Because that guy is you and we want to keep you as a friend.

Bike vs. Trike Stopping Distances
I got to thinking (yeah, I know how dangerous that can be) about bike stopping distances versus trike stopping
distances. This issue is part of my ongoing dilemma about how best to mix and space trikes and bikes in group
rides. Several factors affect stopping distances.
You may recall from my previous braking articles (yeah right!) that the number of brake pistons engaged di-
rectly affects stopping distances. More brake pistons = shorter stopping distances.
Looking at only the number of brake pistons engaged, it appears that the two systems are similar and if both
hand brake lever and foot brake pedal are engaged simultaneously, as they should be, then the two-wheeler
might have a slight edge of one piston (9 vs.8)
Number of Brake Pistons Engaged
On the other hand, the trike does have a braking advantage in ground contact patch size (three patches vs. two)
and weight on the rear wheels, both of which increase braking force. But the trike is heavier and for motorcycles,
increased weight usually equates to increased stopping distances.
So where are we? Anecdotally, it looks to me like a slight stopping distance edge for the 2-wheeler. Unfortu-
nately I can find no reliable, published, data on the topic. As soon as my new knee settles in, I plan to do some
controlled minimum stopping distance tests to establish a base line for my trike and compare those numbers to
published 2-wheel stopping distances.
I would greatly appreciate any reliable data on the subject that any of you may have. Unfounded opinions are
interesting but of little real value.
Let’s discuss the topic at the next gathering.

Lakeridge Winery Harvest Festival Kick Tire, Saturday, June 10th, 830AM
By Ron Adkins
Anyone interested in taking a ride, touring a winery, eating good food, browsing arts &
crafts, and having fun? Did I mention there’s wine?
In 2016, Charlie and JoAnne Davies, Susan, and I rode our Goldwings to Clermont, Flor-
ida, to visit the Lakeridge Winery Harvest Festival (https://www.lakeridgewinery.com/
Events/event.php?id=13152380049539) . We had a great time!
Lakeridge Winery’s flagship festival has the ever popular stomping of the grapes, all ages
welcome to participate! While there last year, JoAnne Davies participated in the timed
grape stomping contest against two others
to see who could stomp the most grape
juice into the plastic gallon jugs placed
below the barrel. Charlie, Susan, and I
cheered JoAnne loudly, but sadly JoAnne
came up short (c’mon, JoAnne, grow
some more! ) Above is a stock photo
(©Lakeridge Winery) of the grape stomp-
ing contest from the Lakeridge Winery
web page. We would have used JoAnne’s
photo from last year’s grape stomping but
she advised us if we ever did publish that
photo, it would be upon pain of death
.
After the grape stomping contest, the four of us browsed the arts & crafts display, talking to
the different artists and craftsmen (and craftswomen) about their handiwork. A quick guess-
timate is that there were about 50-60 booths last year.
It was then time to eat. There’s different types of food, from
Mexican to BBQ. We all got our lunches and then sat down on
the grass under a tree to eat. We shared the shade tree with the
Cocoa Goldwing Chapter. Fancy meeting them, there! There
was a live band going the entire time we were at the Winery
(about 2 – 2 ½ hours). The music was good. Many people bring
chairs or blankets to sit on to listen to the music, so keep that in
mind when you’re packing your Goldwing for the ride.
Then, it was off to the winery tour. There are two parts and you can do either or both. One
is sort of a history tour of the Winery. You get to hear about the Winery’s history from a
11
tour guide and watch a short video. Interesting information, especially if you’re surprised
that there are vineyards and wineries within Florida (take that, you Napa Valley wine
snobs!)
The second part of the tour is the Winery itself. You pick up
a wine list and description at the start of the tour and there
are several wine stations along the way. They give you little
plastic shot glasses. At each wine station, you can choose to
sample the wine at that station (or not) and they give you
about 1 - 1 ½ ounces of wine. There are about 5 or 6 wine
tasting stations as you wind your way among fermenting
tanks to each of the stations. Along the wine tasting tour you can mark down on your wine
list which wines you are interested in purchasing (bring your own pen). Susan and I are
lightweights and usually have a mild buzz by the time we finish the wine tasting. There are
spit buckets at each wine station; but, seriously?!?
At the end of the tasting tour, you pop out of the Winery into
their wine/gift shop. Each of the wines you tasted on your tour
are sold there, along with other wine essentials, like cork-
screws and glassware.
The wine shop has these nifty cardboard box carriers for your
wine bottles; each carrier can hold up to four bottles. If you
ride a GL1800, you’ll find you can fit one bottle carrier into
each saddlebag for a total of 8 bottles. You can, of course, fit more into your trunk, but
that’s where we move our ride gear to make room in the saddlebags. If you ride a GL1500,
your mileage may vary as to how many bottles will fit.
Admission is $3 per person and the admission proceeds go to local charities in Clermont
(nice touch!). The wine prices run from around $8 to $25 per bottle (or thereabouts), most
being in the $12-$15 range. Neither Susan or I are true wine enthusiasts or sommeliers, so
the wine tastes just fine to us. And, it’s nice to support a local (relatively speaking) busi-
ness.
We’ll be attending the Harvest Festival on Saturday, June 10th, leaving the Race Trac gas
station at the intersection of US192 and I-95 at 830AM sharp; the gate opens at 10AM. It
is slightly over a two hour ride each way (Google Maps says 2 hrs, 5 mins). We’ll travel
US192 west to Kissimmee, to US17 west through Champion’s Gate, to US27 north to
Clermont. Lakeridge Winery’s address is Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards, 19239 U.S. 27
North, Clermont, Florida 34715.
