SEPTEMBER 2019

Did You Know?Did you know that over 2 million Americans are affected by glaucoma and nearly half of them don’t even know it? Glaucoma targets the optic nerve which, once damaged, can result in irreversible vision loss and blindness. While high intraocular pressure is definitely symptomatic of glaucoma, many more low pressure diagnoses are made. Routine comprehensive dilated eye exams are necessary for early detection.

Newsom Eye can quickly diagnose the various types of glaucoma and get you on the road to recovery, whether that path leads to medication or surgery. Let’s stop vision loss in its tracks!

What are the risk factors?

• Age - Anyone over the age of 60 should have routine comprehensive eye exams.

• Race - African Americans and non-white Hispanics are at a higher risk.

• Family history - Glaucoma can be hereditary.

• Eye-related factors - Frequent eye inflammation, thinner corneas, nerve sensitivity and severe nearsightedness are some of the risk factors.

• Eye injuries - Severe trauma to the eye can increase the pressure, increasing the potential for glaucoma to develop.

• Medical history - High blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease may increase the risk.

For more facts about glaucoma, visit NewsomEye.com or call 813-908-2020!
