A Note From Our Executive Director...The year 2020 will certainly go down as a memorable year, a year of change and a year of adapting. Last fall, we opened a new site in Marion, which lead usto change our name in January from Boys & Girls Clubs of Cedar Rapids to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Corridor. By the end of March, with COVID restrictions in place throughout the country, we had transformed our afterschool in person programming to weekly check-ins with our families along with sharing virtual programs on Facebook & YouTube. We also learned to adapt our fundraising events from in person to a virtual format.

Through all of these changes, we are grateful to have the support of the Marion, Cedar Rapids & Iowa City communities as we navigate some very unchartered waters. Because of your support, we have been able to continue putting children across the Corridor on the path to great futures!

Sincerely,

sTAFF SPOTLIGHTIn March, we welcomed Taryn Kurth to our team as Olivet Unit Director! Talk about a strange time to come on board! She started just after Club programming shut down due to COVID-19. Instead of planning STEM activities and field trips, Taryn was out visiting Club families each week dropping off food, arts activities or educational supplies and, most importantly, checking in on our kids and families to make sure they were doing ok.

Taryn began her career in Youth Development at the age of 16 when she herself was a Club member and Junior Staff at the original Boys & Girls Club in Cedar Rapids on Ellis Boulevard. After graduating high school she received her Associate of Arts degree in Social Work and has contin-ued to work with children ever since.

Taryn was excited when she saw a position was open at Boys & Girls Clubs of the Corridor because, as a Club Alumni, the Club was a big part of her life growing up. The thought of being able to continue her work with kids while giving back to an organization that was so impactful in her life was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

Since starting at the Club, Taryn has whitnessed some very thoughtful actions from Club kids. The most impactful moment for her took place one night after dinner as they were cleaning up. Before dinner, two of the kids had seen a homeless man outside the Club, which just didn’t

feel right to them, especially since they had food left over from dinner. They asked

Taryn if they could take him some food and started to prepare a

plate, checking the cupboards in search of other treats to

give him. Taryn and the kids walked outside and offered the plate to him, which he appreciated greatly. As Taryn walked back into the Club with the kids, she felt proud to see the kids practicing the important lessons

they learn at the Club through this random act of

kindness.

GIVING KIDS A VOICEThis summer our South Unit implemented Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Street SMART initiative as a way to combat gun violence. Street SMART (Skills Mastery And Resistance Training) is a bullying prevention initiative with an emphasis on resiliency training to give Club members the skills they need to grow up confident, caring and responsible. As part of Street SMART, 8-year Club member and now Junior staff, JaeCis, created a program called “JAECISM Not Racism,” to teach inclusion to youth and teens throughout the community. JAECISM stands for Justice, Accepting, Equality, Color, Inspirational, Successful Movement.

During Pop-Up Clubs at Redmond Park this summer, kids played, received a free lunch and participated in JAECISM activities focusing on the importance of inclusion and acceptance of our differences.

The idea came to JaeCis last spring when protesting was at a high across the nation. She saw the conflict and wanted to make a difference in her community by leading discussions with her peers about racism, responding to police, and connecting with others to be a voice in the community. Through peer discussions, JaeCis encourages teens to be upstanders by speaking up and living the JaeCism way.

67%of local Club teens report finding ways besides fighting to

solve conflicts.

IN MY CLUBElementary school was a challenge for Ryan who was often teased and called names for being short and sensitive. Club programs like Passport to Manhood and Triple Play, encouraged his self-confidence making him feel as though he was the tallest person in the world. He grew from a Club member to a leader, joining the Club’s Junior Staff and leading Triple Play and Game Room activities.

Ryan is currently working towards a degree in Physical Education and Health at Hibbing Community College in Minnesota.

Meet Ryan, the Corridor’s 2020 Youth of the Year and everybody’s favorite teammate.
