SIMBANG GABI in Monmouth County Parishes
Saint Michael’s Church will be host-
ing one of the nine Simbang Gabi
(Advent Night Masses) on Thursday,
December 21 at 7:30 PM, with a rec-
itation of the Rosary at 7:00 PM, and
light refreshments in the Lower
Church after the Mass. Simbang Ga-
bi, or “Mass of the Rooster,” is a tra-
dition held by the Filipinos to prepare for the birth of
Jesus. This tradition began in the mid-1600s in the
Philippines where church bells would start ringing as
early as 3:00 AM, awakening people for 4:00 AM
Mass, in order to allow farmers to attend Mass be-
fore going off to work in the fields in the early
morning hours. The Monmouth County Simbang
Gabi Community invites all to the 9-Day Simbang
Gabi in the following churches:
Dec. 15 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Joseph, Keyport
Dec. 16 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Deal
Dec. 17 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Clement Church, Matawan
Dec. 18 - 7:30 p.m. - St. James Church, Red Bank
Dec. 19 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Catherine of Siena, Farmingdale
Dec. 20 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Benedict Church, Holmdel
Dec. 21 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Michael’s Church, Long Branch
Dec. 22 - 7:30 p.m. - Holy Innocents Church, Neptune
Dec. 23 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Dorothea Church, Eatontown
On the final night of Simbang Gabi, there will be a
grand Christmas celebration in the Reception Hall of
St. Dorothea for refreshments. Please join us 30
minutes before every Mass for the Holy Rosary.

Christmas 2017 Worship Notes Christmas (a holy day of obligation) falls on a Sunday this year, so please take note of the following in chronological or-
der. It is necessary to attend TWO Masses in order to satisfy both the Sunday/Sabbath obligation and the Christmas holy day
obligation.
●Vigil Masses on Saturday, December 23 (4:00, 5:00, and 7:30) satisfy the Sunday/Sabbath obligation and do not satisfy
the Christmas obligation.
●Sunday Masses on December 24 at 7:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, and 12:00 noon satisfy the Sunday/Sabbath obligation and
do not satisfy the Christmas obligation.
●Christmas Vigil Masses on Sunday, December 24 at 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, 7:30, 9:00 and 11:00 satisfy the Christmas
obligation and do not satisfy the Sunday/Sabbath obligation.
●For example, if one goes to the Saturday, December 23 Mass at 4:00 and the Sunday, December 24 Mass at 4:00, then
that person has satisfied the Sunday/Sabbath obligation and the Christmas holy day obligation.
●For example, if one goes to the Sunday, December 24 Mass at 4:00 and to no other Mass on Sunday morning the 24th
nor to a Vigil Mass on Saturday the 23rd, then that person has satisfied the Christmas obligation but not the Sunday /Sabbath
obligation and that person should go to Confession as soon as possible thereafter.
●The Christmas obligation and the Sunday/Sabbath obligation are two separate obligations.
●Since the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on Monday January 1, 2018 is not a holy day of obligation this coming
year, our Sunday evening Masses on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 4:00 and 7:30 will be Sunday Masses satisfying the
Sunday obligation and not holy day Vigil Masses. We will however have two Masses on Monday, January 1, 2018: at 8:00
A.M. as usual and also at 12:00 Noon. There will be no 7:00 P.M. Mass on Monday, January 1, 2018.
●There will be no scheduled Confessions prior to the Christmas Eve Vigil Masses, Christmas Day Masses, and January 1
Masses. If a special need for Confession occurs on those dates, arrangements can be made by contacting Fr. Butler, Fr. Nillo,
or any one of our visiting priests. Please consult the bulletin for special extra times for Confession during the Advent Season.

Family Vigil Mass under the direction of
Music Director Paul Bergin and Choir Di-
rector Alicia Brozovich. Come join us.
St. Vincent de Paul Society
This weekend your St. Vincent de Paul Society packed
groceries for over 110 families. The bags were bulging
with fresh produce, canned items, detergent for all and a
turkey. We also collected $4,208.36 in monetary dona-
tions. A lot of people came out to volunteer this month,
including a brownie scout troop. They were a great help,
especially in bagging all the vegetables.
A special thank you to our youth group! They filled three
huge box-loads of donations that were shipped to the vic-
tims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. They made pre-filled
bags of soap, toothpaste, washcloths, razors, shampoo for
both adults and children. Included were individual notes
to the recipients wishing them hope. The items were sent
to St. Vincent de Paul in Austin, Texas for distribution to
the shelters that people were staying in.
Our cupboards are bare and we will take any non-
perishable food, especially cereal, fruit and canned
vegetables. Detergent and paper items will be greatly
appreciated. We are collecting gift cards to the local
grocery stores as well as gift cards to stores such as K-
Mart, J C Penny, Target, etc. Please place the cards in
the collection basket in an envelope marked SVDP.
The earlier these donations come in, the sooner we
will know what we have to distribute. Thank-you for
your generosity,
