SIMBANG GABI in Monmouth County Parishes

Saint Michael’s Church will be hosting one of the

nine Simbang Gabi (Advent Night Masses) on

Thursday, December 21 at 7:30 PM, with a recita-

tion of the Rosary at 7:00 PM, and light refresh-

ments in the Lower Church after the Mass. Simbang

Gabi, or “Mass of the Rooster,” is a tradition held by

the Filipinos to prepare for the birth of Jesus. This

tradition began in the mid-1600s in

the Philippines where church bells

would start ringing as early as 3:00

AM, awakening people for 4:00 AM

Mass, in order to allow farmers to

attend Mass before going off to

work in the fields in the early morn-

ing hours. The Monmouth County

Simbang Gabi Community invites all to the 9-Day

Simbang Gabi in the following churches:

Dec. 15 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Joseph, Keyport

Dec. 16 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Deal

Dec. 17 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Clement Church, Matawan

Dec. 18 - 7:30 p.m. - St. James Church, Red Bank

Dec. 19 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Catherine of Siena, Farmingdale

Dec. 20 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Benedict Church, Holmdel

Dec. 21 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Michael’s Church, Long Branch

Dec. 22 - 7:30 p.m. - Holy Innocents Church, Neptune

Dec. 23 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Dorothea Church, Eatontown

Please join us 30 minutes before every Mass for the

Holy Rosary.

This week the Altar Flowers were do-

nated by Mary Philip & family in lov-

ing memory of Philip Kuriakose.

The Blessed Mother’s Sanctuary Candle

will be lit this week in loving memory of

Philip Kuriakose requested by Mary Phil-

ip & family.

Christmas 2017

Worship Notes

Christmas (a holy day of obligation) falls on a

Monday this year, so please take note of the following

in chronological order. It is necessary to attend TWO

Masses in order to satisfy both the Sunday/Sabbath

obligation and the Christmas holy day obligation.

●Vigil Masses on Saturday, December 23 (4:00,

5:00, and 7:30) satisfy the Sunday/Sabbath obligation

and do not satisfy the Christmas obligation.

●Sunday Masses on December 24 at 7:00, 9:00,

10:00, 11:00, and 12:00 noon satisfy the Sunday/

Sabbath obligation and do not satisfy the Christmas

obligation.

●Christmas Vigil Masses on Sunday, December 24

at 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, 7:30, 9:00 P.M. and 11:00

P.M. satisfy the Christmas obligation and do not satis-

fy the Sunday/Sabbath obligation.

●For example, if one goes to the Saturday, Decem-

ber 23 Mass at 4:00 and the Sunday, December 24

Mass at 4:00, then that person has satisfied the Sun-

day/Sabbath obligation and the Christmas holy day

obligation.

●For example, if one goes to the Sunday, Decem-

ber 24 Mass at 4:00 and to no other Mass on Sunday

morning the 24th nor to a Vigil Mass on Saturday the

23rd, then that person has satisfied the Christmas obli-

gation but not the Sunday /Sabbath obligation and that

person should go to Confession as soon as possible

thereafter.

●The Christmas obligation and the Sunday/

Sabbath obligation are two separate obligations.

●Since the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on

Monday January 1, 2018 is not a holy day of obliga-

tion this coming year, our Sunday evening Masses on

Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 4:00 and 7:30 will be

Sunday Masses satisfying the Sunday obligation and

not holy day Vigil Masses. We will however have two

Masses on Monday, January 1, 2018: at 8:00 A.M. as

usual and also at 12:00 Noon. There will be no 7:00

P.M. Mass on Monday, January 1, 2018.

●There will be no scheduled Confessions prior to

the Christmas Eve Vigil Masses, Christmas Day Mass-

es, and January 1 Masses. If a special need for Confes-

sion occurs on those dates, arrangements can be made

by contacting Fr. Butler, Fr. Nillo, or any one of our

visiting priests. Please consult the bulletin for special

extra times for Confession during the Advent Season.

PATHWAY TO HEAL Divorced, Widowed, and Separated

Group

"May you know the beauty of the season, Merry

Christmas. Have a peaceful and a wonderful New

Year"

During this wonderful season there is always the

opportunity for the blues to arrive. Try and find

the middle ground. Change it up. Make new tradi-

tions. Do something different, something new. Go

to Mass. Go to Confession if you haven’t received

the graces and blessings of the Sacrament of Rec-

onciliation in a while.

St. Michael's has a group for those that need sup-

port with life's new paths and journeys. The

PATHWAY TO HEAL Group is a ministry for

widowed, separated, and divorced persons.

Our group is here to help those who may be new to

the emotional stresses of separation and loss in

your world. If you need a place to come and feel

safe please plan on attending our group.

Thursday, January 11th & 25th, 2018

7:00PM - St. Michael's Living Room

6 West End Court. Long Branch, NJ

Please Join Us, All Are Welcomed.

At this month's group meeting the Youth

Group did a toy drive for Eagles

Up. The Christmas campaign is called

"Project Little Soldier" with the large

number of soldiers being deployed, the

Eagles Up campaign strive to make their

"Little Soldiers" who are left behind, smile for the holi-

days. It is hard enough for them to understand that their

parents are away, let alone the thought of spending the

holidays without them. Each soldier provides a wish list

of two gifts per child and they try to make every effort to

make the child's wish come true. So the Youth group

collected toys and gift cards for the organization. We

also make Christmas cards for the kids and their fami-

lies.

Eagles Up!

The following is a letter received from Afghanistan

Greeting Toni from Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan,

Just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for the

very generous care package. Even though I am Air

Force—I’m attached to an Army unit—ad we all share.

Everything you sent was much needed and very ap-

preciated. I can’t express into words how wonderful it is

to be so supported by people “back home”. God Bless

MARCH FOR LIFE – 2018 Mass at St. Jerome’s Church at 6:00 a.m.

Depart St. Jerome’s parking lot at 6:30 a.m. Return to St. Jerome’s parking lot at appx. 9:30 p.m.

The March for Life began as a small demonstration in 1973 and rapidly grew to be the largest pro-

life event in the world. The peaceful demonstration that has followed on this somber anniversary

every year since 1973 is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our

time: abortion. Join us and half a million pro-lifers as we head once again to Washington, D.C.

on Friday, January 19, 2018 for the 45th annual March For Life as we walk from the Washington

Monument up Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court. Always peaceful and uplifting, The March For Life offers

you the opportunity to stop in at your federal legislators' offices and let them know how you feel (and vote!). Defund-

ing the abortion industry, de-funding embryonic stem cell research, voting down "right to die" and "death with dignity"

euthanasia legislation are all current hot-button topics you can weigh in on.

We hope that you can join us! Round-trip transportation is still only a $10 donation which may be paid with a check payable to St.

Jerome’s Church. Bus passengers under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. To sign-up or for fur-

ther information: call Kathryn 732-581-9735.

Thank you and may Our Lord grant healing to all those who
