First Sunday in Lent February 21, 2021

De Nuestro Párroco Mi Querida Familia Parroquial,
El sábado 20 de febrero a las 2 p.m., San Lorenzo tuvo el honor
de dar
la bienvenida al Obispo Joel Konzen para celebrar el Rito de
Elección
de algunos de los candidatos y catecúmenos de la Arquidiócesis
de
Atlanta que se están preparando para entrar en plena comunión
con
la Iglesia Católica a través de la Rito de Iniciación Cristiana
para
Adultos (RICA). En la Pascua, estos candidatos y catecúmenos
celebrarán con nosotros los sacramentos del Bautismo, la
Sagrada
Eucaristía y la Confirmación. El Rito de Elección es un paso
crítico en el
proceso de conversión en curso. A través de este proceso,
los
candidatos y catecúmenos afirman su decisión de convertirse
en
católicos y la iglesia reconoce con gratitud que son guiados por
la
gracia del Espíritu Santo en este camino. Ellos inscriben sus
nombres en
el Libro de los Electos y esto marca el inicio del período
de
preparación final más intensa para los sacramentos de
iniciación, durante el cual los elegidos
serán animados a seguir a Cristo con mayor generosidad y
fidelidad.
Nuestra parroquia está profundamente encantada y honrada de
tener 24 candidatos y
catecúmenos preparándose para celebrar los sacramentos con
nosotros esta Pascua. Les insto
a que los mantengan a ellos y a sus familias en sus oraciones.
Ese es el mejor regalo que
podemos darles. También debemos orar por sus padrinos y
catequistas que han caminado con
ellos en los últimos meses de su preparación. Agradezco al
equipo de RICA dirigido por Diane
Maguire por el excelente trabajo que están haciendo para
preparar a nuestros candidatos y
catecúmenos para los sacramentos. Pedimos que la gracia del
Espíritu Santo que primero puso
en sus corazones el deseo de embarcarse en este viaje de fe
continúe sosteniéndolos a medida
que se acercan a su finalización.

Pastor’s Corner
My dear parish family,
On Saturday, February 20 at 2pm, St. Lawrence was honored to
welcome Bishop Joel Konzen to celebrate the Rite of Election for
some of the candidates and catechumens across the
Archdiocese of Atlanta who are preparing to enter into full
communion with the Catholic
Church through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
(RCIA). At Easter, these candidates and
catechumens will celebrate with us the sacraments of Baptism,
Holy Eucharist and
Confirmation. The Rite of Election is a critical step in the
process of ongoing conversion.
Through this process, the candidates and catechumens affirm
their decision to become
catholic and the church gratefully recognizes that they are
guided by the grace of the Holy
Spirit on this journey. They enroll their names in the Book of
the Elect and this marks the
beginning of the period of the final, more intense preparation
for the sacraments of initiation,
during which the elect will be encouraged to follow Christ with
greater generosity and fidelity.
Our parish is deeply delighted and humbled that we have 24
candidates and catechumens
preparing to celebrate the sacraments with us this Easter. I
urge you to keep them and their
families in your prayers. That is the greatest gift we can give
them. We must also pray for their
sponsors and catechists who have journeyed with them in the last
few months of their
preparation. I thank the RCIA team led by Diane Maguire for the
outstanding work they are
doing to prepare our candidates and catechumens for the
sacraments. We ask that the
grace of the Holy Spirit that first set in their hearts the
desire to embark on this journey of faith
will continue to sustain them as they move closer to its
completion.
On a different note, this is a gentle reminder to all the
families that have not yet made their
pledges towards the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal 2021; I take this
opportunity to invite you to
make an effort to participate. It is never too late to make your
pledge. We have envelopes in
the narthex and also at the information window in the narthex.
You can just fill them out at any
time at your earliest convenience. You can return them to the
parish office or simply place
them in the offertory baskets after Mass. You can also do it
online by visiting our parish website
(www.saintlaw.org) and follow the link to the Archbishop’s
Annual Appeal. You can also make
your pledge by going directly to the Archdiocesan website,
www.archatl.com. Please, make sure you specify your parish
name and city (St. Lawrence, Lawrenceville). Thank you
immensely for your selfless generosity.
During the season of Lent, the parish will be busier than
normal
due to the many events and activities through which we
commemorate the Lenten season ranging from Stations of the
Cross, adoration, Fish Fry and other Lenten activities.
Therefore,
I ask you to go to the parish website (www.saintlaw.org) and
sign up to receive periodic reminders of the events and
activities taking place in the parish. Exercise your right to
stay
informed.

Living the Gospel-Mark 1:12-15 Temptation
Lent is a time of retreat. We journey inwardly to the desert
places of solitude to rediscover
God’s unique and abiding love for us. Which strengthens us for
our mission and the world.
Before the beginning of his public ministry, Jesus us driven
into the wilderness by the Spirit to fast
and pray. His sojourn in the desert is a time of serious,
focused prayer. We too, are impelled by
the Spirit to get back to the basics during Lent. This is a time
to put aside whatever is not
essential in our lives and take the risk of entrusting ourselves
completely to God in prayer. Unlike
Matthew and Luke, Mark says nothing about the content of the
temptations that Jesus faced
in the desert. Not does Mark say that the temptations ended bout
only that Satan left Jesus to
await another opportunity. Throughout Mark’s Gospel, Satan
continues to test Jesus, all the
way to the cross. Yet Jesus persevered. His time in the
wilderness strengthens him for all that lies
ahead. This gives us hope, for we too must wrestle with demons
repeatedly during our life’s
journey.
What nonessentials can I put aside in order to make a specific
commitment to prayer this Lent?
Vivir el Evangelio Marcos 1:40-45
Tentación La Cuaresma es un tiempo de retiro. Viajamos hacia
adentro a
los lugares de la soledad del desierto para redescubrir el
amor
único y perdurable de Dios por nosotros. Lo que nos
fortalece
para nuestra misión y el mundo. Antes del comienzo de su
ministerio público, Jesús nos llevó al desierto por el Espíritu
para
ayunar y orar. Su estancia en el desierto es un tiempo de
oración
seria y centrada. Nosotros también, somos impulsados por el
Espíritu a volver a lo básico durante la Cuaresma. Este es
un
momento para dejar a un lado lo que no es esencial en
nuestra
vida y correr el riesgo de confiarnos completamente a Dios en
la
oración. A diferencia de Mateo y Lucas, Marcos no dice nada
sobre el contenido de las tentaciones que Jesús enfrentó en
el
desierto. Marcos no dice que las tentaciones terminaron sólo
que Satanás dejó a Jesús para esperar otra oportunidad. A lo
largo del Evangelio de Marcos, Satanás continúa poniendo a
prueba a Jesús, hasta la cruz. Sin embargo, Jesús perseveró.
Su
tiempo en el desierto lo fortaleció por todo lo que se
avecinaba.
Esto nos da esperanza, porque nosotros también debemos
luchar repetidamente con demonios durante el viaje de
nuestras
vidas.
