Fire Safety PolicyFire Safety PolicyTampering with fire and safety equipment is

a violation of state law and university regulations.

Tampering is defined as any action that may damage or interfere with the normal functioning of the fire and life safety system.

Items Hanging From Sprinkler HeadItems Hanging From Sprinkler Head

Hanging items from sprinkler head could cause a malfunction in the sprinkler system. This could discharge up to 15 gallons of water per minute.

Note: As of August 2001, this only applies to Jester, San Jacinto, BRP, and Moore-Hill.

Items on Top of SoffitItems on Top of Soffit Items stored on top of

the soffit could damage sprinkler piping inside. This could also cause a malfunction in the sprinkler system.

Note: only applies to Jester, BRP, and Moore-Hill.

Propping Door OpenPropping Door OpenAccording to the State Fire Marshal, all doors

must close automatically in order to prevent the spread of a fire.

Tampering with smoke detectors.Tampering with fire extinguishers.Tampering with safety related signage (e.g.

evacuation diagrams and exit signs).Tampering with door closers.Tampering with fire alarm system (includes

sirens, pull stations, lights, etc.).

Household AppliancesHousehold AppliancesBy order of the State Fire Marshal, the use

of any appliance with open heating coils is prohibited. Students found in violation of policy will be directed to immediately remove the prohibited items and be subject to disciplinary action, including fines.
