Finding your compass: Leading through uncertainty

Innovative leadership is the ability to both think and influence others to create “new and better” ideas to move towards positive results. Innovative leaders inspire their teams to be creative in finding and navigating effective solutions to today’s complex challenges in healthcare, which seem to be increasing by the minute. These challenges can include, but are not limited to, the rising complexity of technology and healthcare’s struggle to keep up, dwindling resources and staffing shortages, new human resources complexities arising from a four-generation workforce, the urgency of ensuring environmental sustainability, and of course, the ongoing fiscal constraints.

In today’s healthcare industry, leaders must navigate through challenging and complex situations on a daily basis. Finding out how to get from “point A” to “point B” is rarely, if ever, a straight line. Often, leaders are required to be flexible with their solution trajectory and must adapt to many unplanned changes as they come. Leaders must respond to these changes and revise previous plans to incorporate new innovations in order to overcome challenges while still achieving their goals.

Educator and creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson said, “The role of a creative leader is not to have all the ideas. It’s to create a culture in which everybody will have ideas.”

Innovative leaders create, cultivate, and sustain environments where everyone feels psychologically safe and trust that they can take risks and make mistakes. Creating an environment where everyone’s voice can be heard, and everyone’s perspective can contribute to the outcome is a great way to reach effective solutions.

Attend the 2020 BC Health Leaders Conference to learn how to better navigate the health system challenges that are being faced across the country. Discover how leadership through innovation, creativity, and flexibility can help you find and trust your leadership compass. Explore practices to help guide yourself and

others through the issues and opportunities of today’s healthcare industry such as:

• Establishing guiding principles (national framework, teams, etc.);• Being flexible in your leadership practices;• Leveraging and inspiring your team; • Making decisions in times of fiscal constraints;• Being effective environmental stewards;• Navigating challenging ethical situations; and• Promoting diversity in the workforce.

The BC Health Leaders Conference is a pivotal opportunity for health leaders to come together to learn, share knowledge, and improve leadership skills to work toward better healthcare for all.

2020 BC Health Leaders Conference

General InformationThe Canadian College of Health Leaders invites you to submit abstracts to be considered for presentation at a concurrent session as part of the 2020 BC Health Leaders Conference. There are three concurrent session blocks over the two days and space for five concurrent sessions in each block (total of 15 possible concurrent sessions). Concurrent sessions are 60 minutes in length.

The Conference Planning Committee encourages proposals which express innovative, practical and creative ways for presenting information to delegates. Proposals should be interactive and not simply presentations.

GUIDELINES FOR CORPORATE SUBMISSIONSWe welcome submissions from private sector partners, provided that they address (a) cooperative venture(s) with a

non-profit sector partner and include the latter as a co-presenter.

The abstract should present an unbiased description of a certain method or service, discussing both pros and cons.

Subtle and/or blatant advertisement of any products or services is in direct conflict with the spirit of the conference.

Examples of the former include repeated references to products or trade names and excessive use of corporate

logos and trademarks in graphic illustrations. Photographs of commercial equipment are not permitted unless

they add educational value. The Planning Committee insists that all presenters understand without exception, that

commercialism is inappropriate and will not be tolerated. Presenters are asked to abide by these constraints when

preparing their abstracts, and presentations.
