PHILOSOPHY OF TEAM BUILDING

• Integrity. Commitment. Honesty. Trust. Passion. These are some values and pillars that lead to high performance; that take ordinary teams into extraordinary places

• Play: You can be serious about your work without taking yourself so seriously. Play is a mindset more than a specific activity. and unity• To expose strengths and weaknesses so you can

build the team from there • To build better relationships• To reinforce that good interaction skills can

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS

Be Prepared and Understand: •Our own intentions and philosophy of teambuilding can affect the perception of importance to others •Clear objectives will give direction – why are we doing this/what’s to gain•Outcomes should be attainable, relevant and something that can be reinforced later•Communication is multi-faceted so vary your activities to address different styles•Activities should have an intro and a debrief

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS

Things to know and consider:•Most activities are really more about the “process” than the “product” •Capitalize on group dynamics:

*Length of time together *Personalities and learning styles of the group

•Excitement on your part can set a positive stage – but wrap up or adapt an activity if the group energy fades•Lighter activities are a good place to start; go deeper over time•Acknowledge the “bomb” – it happens so move on

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS

Logistics are a key component:•Have sufficient time, space and supplies needed•Have good knowledge of the activity; practice first•If the group is large, consider several small groups•Provide guidelines and expectations

*start on time; end on time *pagers and phones off *stay engaged and respectful

•Small prizes or rewards are a great motivator•Most of all – have fun!

LEADING CHANGE THROUGH TEAM BUILDING

• Reasons for implementing team building activities:• Reorganization/Role Changes (new staff, more staff, reduction

in staff, clinical ladder implementation)• Cost containment• Process changes (the way we deliver services)

• “Lead Change” and gain “buy-in” from your staff to participate (GE’s change acceleration process):• Creating a shared need• Shaping a vision• Mobilizing Commitment• Making Change Last• Monitoring Progress
