Primary Sources Books Hanhimaki, Jussi M., and Odd Arne Westad, eds. The Cold War A History in Documents and Eyewitness Accounts. New York: Oxford University Press, 2003. Print. This book contained dozens of primary sources. This collection was an excellent springboard into deeper research into primary sources. Kennan, George F., and John Lukacs. Through the History of the Cold War: The Correspondence of George F. Kennan and John Lukacs. N.p.: U of Pennsylvania P, 2010. Print. Through the large amount of primary source correspondence letters between the historian John Lukacs and the then Soviet ambassador to the United States George F. Kennan, we were able to get an inside look at the events, ideologies, struggles, and philosophical discussions of the Cold War period. Documents, Letters, and Speeches "AntiBallistic Missile Treaty (1972)." World History: The Modern Era. ABCCLIO, 2014. Web. 23 Dec. 2014. This article provided the contents of the ABM treaty, laying out each article and the issues they sought to address. This treaty was a hugely important result of the political summits held by Reagan and Gorbachev, and is a testament to their unique ability to get along reasonably as leaders of countries with such different ideologies. We used this primary source on the "Summits" page of our website. Bilak, Vasil, et al. Letter. Aug. 1968. Wilson Center Digital Archive. Wilson Center, Washington, D.C. Wilson Center Digital Archive. Web. 21 Apr. 2015. <http://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/114636>. This letter, sent from several Czechoslovak Communist Party members to Leonid Brezhnev, characterizes the hardline dynamism in Prague even during the Prague Spring. There was a significant consensus of Czechoslovaks who greeted the Soviet invading force as a peacekeeping mission rather than an imperialist mission. In this letter, the writers espouse support for the Soviet government. We used a quotation from this letter on our timeline on "Historical Context." Brezhnev, Leonid. "Speech by First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev." Kremlin, Moscow. 13 Nov. 1968. Speech. This speech illustrating the Brezhnev Doctrine is especially important because it was used to justify the intervention in Czechoslovakia. It granted the Soviet Union widereaching power to govern by proxy the Eastern satellite states. Central Committees of the Bulgarian, East German, Hungarian, Polish, and Soviet Communist Parties. "Letter from the Central Committees of the Bulgarian, East German, Hungarian, Polish, and Soviet Communist Parties regarding the Warsaw Pact Intervention in Czechoslovakia." Letter to Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party. 21 Aug. 1968. Wilson Center Digital Archive. Wilson Center, Washington, D.C. Wilson Center Digital Archive. Web. 20 Feb. 2015. <http://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/110458>. Councils of the aforementioned nations within the USSR worked together to create a letter to send to the heads of the Soviet Union. This letter essentially demanded an intervention in the protests in Czechoslovakia against the Soviet Union. This letter is important and significant to our research and the history of our project because it invokes the Brezhnev Doctrine, a remnant of the Soviet system before Gorbachev's leadership. Churchill, Winston. "Sinews of Peace." Westminster College. 5 Mar. 1946. Speech. This speech by Winston Churchill, also known as the "Iron Curtain" speech, foreshadowed the early Cold War, the political boundaries of the satellite states and Western Europe, and Western jargon on the Soviet Union. We used an excerpt of this speech on the timeline on the "Historical Context" page. D.C. U.S. Department of State. "Lessons of Reykjavik," U.S. Department of State, c. 12 October 1986, 1 p. Doc. 97600060066. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Department of State, 1986. The National Security Archive. Web. 7 Dec. 2014. <http://www2.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB203/>. This State Department document exposes the true feelings of the American delegation at Reykjavik. They admit they cannot predict the actions of the Soviet Government. They also acknowledge the resounding success of Reykjavik and the attributes which led to the success (i.e. small size, informal delegation, remote location). This document helps us to understand what makes NonProliferation Treaties successful and the intricate relationship of the two world powers. "Gorbachev, Mikhail." Cold War Reference Library. Ed.
