The workshop was aimedat establishing a platform forthe co-operatives to networkand synergise operationswith national and provincialpolicy directives.

Addressing the summit,HCM deputy mayor, Johnnyde Wet, said the municipality

has anumberofeconomicde-velopment projects fromwhich the co-ops can benefit.

He mentioned the devel-opment of the Port ShepstoneJustice Park, a new magis-trate’s office complex.

“This project will stimu-late local economy and it ishoped that co-operatives willbenefit from it,” said De Wet.

Director of HCM Econom-ic Development Department,Siya Zama, said the purposeof their summit was to meettheco-ops to assess their situ-ation and viability.

“We felt that we needed tomeet you so that we learn

about co-operatives who arestruggling to make it in thebusiness and those who arereally sick and dying,” saidZama.

He explained that the co-operative initiative and sup-port is mainly a provincialgovernment competencysince they were introducedby the former premier DrZweli Mkhize.

Butcouncillors have calledon municipal officials to en-sure that co-operatives aresurviving and sustainableand that where there areproblems, relevant interven-tions are made.

ANC regional chairper-son, Tolomane Mnyay-iza, said that the ANC

is “humbled” by the 74.5% itobtained in the South Coastregion in last week’s generalelections.

Speaking at the Port Shep-stone Civic Centre on Mon-day, Mnyayiza said they hadset themselves an 80% target.“We fell short of that but wehave improved from the pre-vious election and shownmassive growth andstrength,” he said.

Breaking down the resultsfrom all six Ugu localmunicipalities, he said in Vu-lamehlo the party obtained78%, in Umdoni it got 65%,Umzumbe 80.5%, Ezinqoleni83%, Umuziwabantu 79%

and Hibiscus Coast 72%.“Our victory was a result

of the campaigns that wentto the basics, where all ouralliance partners rose up todefend the revolution of theANC, as we felt that it was indanger.

“Unity is the strength ofthe ANC, you cannot divorcethe ANC from the masses ofthe people,” said Mnyayiza.

He added that theirs wasan unusual campaign as itwas not just about winningthe elections but service de-livery to the people. “Now wewill celebrate ourvictorywiththe people at branch levelsand sit down to work on ourservice delivery tactics to thepeople,” said Mnyayiza.

DA regional spokespersonDouglas Rawlins said theyare ‘very happy’ with the re-sults they got in Ugu region.

“We have improved inUmdoni and did very wellin Hibiscus Coast area. In ru-ral areas, we still have un-tapped votes. We need tochannel our resources moreto rural areas,” said Rawlins.

The DA obtained 48.4%more votes in the districtthan in the previous generalelections.

“The results showa steadygrowth and they entrench usas the official opposition.

“We know what areas willneed more attention in 2016local government electionsand are looking forward tothat challenge.

“We are pleased that wehave reached our targets inthis election and in particularthe growth in support fromtheIndiancommunity inMar-burg, Albersville and Umzin-to,” said Rawlins.

THE KZN Department of CorrectionalServices celebrated 20 years of freedomand International Worker's Day with agala dinner at Ugu sports and leisure centre outside Gamalakhe on Thursday.

The event saw VIPs honouringcorrectional services employees for professional excellence, loyalty, dedicationand for selfimprovement through academic studies. MP Comfort Ngidi saidSouth Africa has developed and achievedmuch in the past 20 years.

“We have seen strides in service delivery, in areas of water, sanitation, electricity, housing, education, roads and infrastructure development. But there arestill areas where the government stillneeds to intervene to improve the livesof its people,” said Ngidi.

Former UKhosi FM station managerBhodloza Nzimande, encouraged the audience and other VIPs to save and investtheir money and to plan and work towards retirement.

“What I have learnt is that our peoplebecome poor once they have retired because they do not save their money when

they are still employed. You need to savemoney when you are working and startnow to plan for your retirement,” said Nzimande.

Wellknown musician and playwriteMbongeni Ngema congratulated the employees of the Department of Correctional Services for their good work.

“Today we have correctional centres, unlike in the past when people were detained and not corrected for integrationinto the society. Those days prisons werehell,” said Ngema. He said the positivechange has benefited all.

IT wasn’t only nurses that were honoured on International Nurses Day atSouth Coast Hospice, but “community

champions” too. Hospice nurses submitted names of their palliative care helpersin the community who were given badges, which in turn were given to patientsin various areas.

Kath Defilippi, the founder of SouthCoast Hospice, led the programme, whichbegan with the Hospice prayer. She alsoexplained what a nursing profession entailed. “A nurse is the only professionalthat can go to work every day knowingthat she might touch a person’s life andthat her life will also be touched in someway,” said Defilippi.

After the nurses’ pledge was read, nurses received their badges which werespecially sent by the Hospice PalliativeCare Association.

COMMUNITY members who battle withdepression and anxiety now have an opportunity to attend a local support group, sanctioned by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag).

The group was started by SouthCoaster Bev Temlett in the beginning ofthis year.

Temlett said she trained as a supportgroup leader after working with the localDepartment of Health office, where shelearned to support depression sufferers.

Sadag member Shellique Carby saidthe group has the additional support oftwo local psychologists who people cancall on for advice.

“The support group meets every thirdSaturday of the month at the Uvongo Library, in the activities room, at 9.30am.The group has helped people deal withtheir sadness and despair,” said Carby.

A group member, offering her testimonial but wanting to remain anonymous, said: “After losing my husband two yearsago, I went through the normal process ofgrief, anger and a sense of disbelief thatthis could happen. Then came the depression and utter despair of how to carry onwith my life and did I even want to.

“A few months ago, I picked up a flyerin my pharmacy informing me of Sadag. Ihesitated many times before admitting Ineeded help. After phoning Bev, I pluckedup the courage to attend the next session. What a lifealtering experience. Justto be able to talk about how I wasfeeling, and listen to what other peoplewere enduring in their lives put everythinginto perspective. I not only get up in themorning with a smile on my face, but I amready to embrace a new life, albeit without my soulmate.

“I know I will still have black days, but

with the knowledge of the support that isalways there for me in the form of Bev, Ican move on with my life.

“I will continue to attend the sessionsbecause counselling will keep me strongand my story might even help somebodyelse. Everybody has problems of some sortand the medical route isn’t always the answer. The human touch cannot be denied.”

For more information about thegroup, contact Bev on 082 400 8979 [email protected], or Sadag on080 012 1314.

light deals with forbidden lovebetween a sparkly, centuries’ oldmale vampire and a 17-year-oldhuman female and all of the emo-tional quandaries that would en-tail.

The Hunger Games deals witha teen that has to fight her waythrough a dystopian post-apoca-lyptic world and all of the emo-tional quandaries that would en-tail.

It was tough, but I think thatabout captures all of the subtlenuances and complexitiesofeach.

Both series have ‘taken theworld by storm’ and have seensuch success that they have beenmade into hit movies by thatother beacon of hope when itcomes toqualityproduction–Hol-lywood.

For reasons known onlytoper-petual crack users, Twilight hasbeen compared to the novels ofJane Austen. Perpetual tic usershave rated the series as ‘one ofthe best reads ever’.

The Hunger Games has re-ceived even more favourable re-views, even though someone likehorror-writer Stephen King hasgiven the series a ‘B’ becauseit’s predictable and adultswouldbe able to pick up on thewritingflaws. Ahem...pot, kettle, black?

What Fyodor Dostoevskywould have thought of this is openfor debate, although I am guess-ing poison intravenously admin-istered over a decade or so would

be his wish. As for comparingthe writing in Twilight to Austen:Epic fail, because Austen’s char-acters actually had...well,charac-ter. Let us now compare this toTwilight.

Consider this inspired quotefrom heroine Bella Swan, talkingabout the uber-pale, uber-in-tense, uber-limp-lettuce-leaf-per-sonality of vampire Edward: “Iwasn’t interesting. And he was.Interesting… and brilliant… andmysterious… and perfect… andbeautiful… and possibly able tolift full-sizedvanswith one hand.”

As for the Hunger Games, soviolent is it that parents have lob-bied because they deem it age in-appropriate for the young teenmarket. It has been compared toa graphic novel made for Holly-wood, andnodoubt the publisherhad this in mind when agonisingover how much carnage wouldincrease sales.

Why Twilight and The HungerGames have ‘swept the world’ isnot muchofamystery, given theirmarketability and sales potential.

If, however, young bibliophilesare open to being challenged byliterature that has more depththan a petri-dish, we should en-courage them to read the classics.

It may surprise many to findthat lust, intrigue, passion, obses-sive love, murder, warandtragedycan be written with conviction, beauty and that elusive quality intoday’s efforts - profound insight.

EDITORIAL COMMENT:

Electionpromises:Very easyto makeSOUTH Africans have hadtheir say and are now waiting for the fulfilment ofmany promises.

Elections 2014 saw manyyoung first time voters excited to be part of developinga better South Africa.

While some voting stations boasted long lines andan even longer wait, otherssaid the procedure wassimple and quick.

One young voter said:“People need to realise thatthere are other ways of expressing our feelings andthat is through politics. When we cast our vote, ourvoices are being heard.”

South Africans will nowget a break from the intensecampaigns and hat eating...we hope.

About five months ago,we mourned the death offormer president and leaderof the ANC,, Nelson Mandela.

Many parties, not justthe ANC, quoted the leaderand highlighted his love forthis country during campaigning. Mandela encouraged South Africans toshare this love and work towards building a better nation.

This is the Mandela legacy every party was talkingabout.

Does the ruling partyhave what it takes to fulfilpromises and build a nation? Watch this space incoming weeks for details, and send us your comments.

I AM not an academic, but evenwith this benefit I have readenough to know that the future ofliterature is bleak. In fact, whenpondering the prospects of thewritten word, I immediately wantto gnaw through my ankle in aneffort to bleed-out slowly.

Should this ever happen, I canonly pray that some Samaritan-type will not throw one of theHunger Games or Twilight novelsmy way as a source of comfortin my dying hours. I will use thepaperback to beat myself into acoma after assaulting the Samar-itan.

The Hunger Games and Twi-light sagas are just two of manyrecent bestselling series that areregarded as literary manna whenit comes to milking teen and 20-something angst and skyrocket-ing sales for publishing houses.

Let me see if I am able to sum-marise the intricate, unique plotsfor readers of this column: Twi-

THABO Duma’s letter lastweek refers.

Duma asks why we neverhear anyone moaning aboutthe noise Bike Week brings, yet the community is up inarms every time there areloud music bashes that go onuntil the morning.

Firstly, one just cannotcompare the two. Bike Weekcontributes hundreds ofthousands of rands in reve-nue for the area, with touristscoming from all over SouthAfrica.

The roar of the enginesDuma complains about hap-

pens only that one weekend ayear. My relatives in Belgiumtold me the event was evenmentioned in a news bulletinthere last week, which I hopewill bring more internationaltourists.

The jazz and disco musicevents that take place everyother month, which manypeople complain about, seemto have no value, although Irealise the good intention be-hind them.

What the community wit-nesses and complains abouthas been reported in thisnewspaper before and it in-

cludes people having sex inpublic, extremely loudmusic, fighting, underage drinking, litter and used condoms lefteverywhere.

Tell me how this contrib-utes to the economy of ourtown?

As for Duma voting for theAfrican National Congressbecause of the doublestandards, as he puts it, goodfor him.

Vote for the ANC again in2019 if the filth I have justmentioned is what it pro-motes.

I RECENTLY read with a sadheart the story about howthere are more pregnantschoolgirls in this region thanin the near past.

As a mother, my heartgoes out to these girls, but asa mother I also have to askwhere themoms of these girlsare.

Some parents in this coun-try seem to have a distinct

lack of interest in the welfareof their children, particularlytheir girls. I can think uponthe reasons for this and stillget no closer to answeringwhy this is so.

Often when I am out walk-ing I see girls as young asnine and 10 roaming thestreets alone. Are their par-ents not aware that their chil-dren are vulnerable at this

age and need their care andshelter? Although I may nothave all of the answers tothese questions, I am gettingmore jaded the older I getand believe that this is simplya question of selfishness.

There are too many par-ents who are self-absorbedand put their own needs first.

PHOTO: SUPPLIEDI saw this car (NPS 74973) recently parked very recklessly right over a pedestrian crossing onConnor Street opposite the Hibiscus council chambers. There was no driver inside as can beseen in the photo. Such arrogance and recklessness is not good. I assume the driver hadpopped into the municipality building but what is clear is that he is connected enough toknow that no one would ever dare question this. There were vacant parking spaces just fivemetres from the pedestrian crossing.

NOT many DIY homeowners know how often theyshould clean their power tools as they fear damagingthem in the process. Power tools are an investmentthat you want to last for a long time, and it makessense to clean and lubricate them regularly to ensurethey remain in good condition.

Cleaning your tools also extends their life and ensure they remain free from rust if they have metalparts and apply lubricant. A can of WD40 is essentialfor any workshop or toolbox for this job. It is also essential for applying to moving parts and can also beused to extend the life of cutting bits.

Instead of throwing away instruction manuals foryour power tools, keep them handy so you can refertothemtoknowwhichpartsrequireoilingonaregularbasis. On larger power tools where ratchets and gearsare mainly responsible for certain functions, theseareasneedtobekeptascleanaspossible.Useapaintbrush for this then spray with WD40, wiping awayany excess with a lintfree or cotton cloth.

Also use a paintbrush to remove dust and particles

on slotted tracks and then apply lubricant to movingparts. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and particles on slotted tracks, such as those on a mitre saw.

Once clean and dustfree, apply lubricant to moving parts, wiping away any excess to as not to attractdust. With smaller power tools such as a jigsaw, circular saw, angle grinder and other power tools withmoving parts, always keep them clean and free fromdust. Dust all moving parts with a small paintbrushand spray on a light coat of WD40. This is particularlyimportant with the jigsaw blade locking mechanism,as this part can become stiff if not kept clean. Powertools that have a filter system or dust vents, as in thecase of a sander, need to be cleaned after use. Overtime these vents become clogged up and may causethe motor to overheat.

An integral filter system only works to filter dustif cleaned out regularly. Today's sanders are designedto be easy to use, and this means that many use avelcrotype sanding pad. It is essential to keep thebase of the sander clean and free from dust to preventdamaging the fastening pad. It is essential to keepthe base of the sander clean and free from dust toprevent damaging the fastening pad. You can trykeeping a clean sanding pad on the base of the sanderbefore packing it away. After a single use your sanderbecomes clogged with dust. After finishing your project, take 5 minutes to brush the sander clean beforeputting away. When cleaning accessories such asblades, protect yourself by wearing suede gloves.Spray the blade with WD40 and then use an oldtoothbrush to brush away debris that has built up onthe blade and then use a lintfree or cotton cloth towipe away any excess. Protect your accessories andattachments by storing them in airtight containers,or adding a pack of desiccant to prevent moisturefrom causing these to rust.

How to choose PAINTDREAMINGoftheperfectcolour

foryour interiorpaintingproj-ect is fun, but it’s just one step

in understanding how to choosepaint.

Walking into the paint store is likeopening a robust menu of options:satin latex low-volatile organic com-pound (VOC), high-gloss alkyd withprimer, matte latex bright white, etc. Before the in-store paint expert runsthroughyouroptions, it’sbest tohavedone some homework to be sure youchoose thebestoption foryourhome.Latex vs oil-based paints

Despite ahost of dedicated follow-ers, oil-based paints (or alkyds) havebeen overshadowed by the ease andversatility of latex paints.

Cleaningupequipmentafterusingoil-based paints requires paint thin-ner or turpentine. Oil-based paintsstill have theiruses, but formost inte-rior projects, latex is the way to go—they’re simply the easiest to apply.

More accurately called water-based paints, the paints labeled“latex” are often either artificial latexor acrylic. As of 2001, latex paintsheld nearly 80% of themarket for in-terior projects.

Latex won’t yellow or chalk (be-come powdery) — both of which areriskswithoil-basedpaint—and it of-fers a series of environmentallyfriendly options.Finishing touches

The finish of your paint is how re-flective it is. Ingeneral, theshinier thefinish, theeasier thesurfacewill be toclean, althoughthereareanumberofinnovative flat-matte and low-sheenpaints formulated for easy cleaning.Which paint for where?

Here’saquick listofrecommenda-tions for specific situations — mostcompanies make a paint specificallysuitedforceilings.Usually it’sabright

white, flat ormatte latex that goes oneasilywithout spatteringordripping, and it covers irregularities withoutmultiple coats.

Best choice — latex, flat-matte,bright white. Kitchens are usuallyhigh-traffic, high-abuse areas full ofwater, grease and other potentialpaint pitfalls.

If your kitchen has any old greasestainsthat justwon’tcomeclean,spottreatwithanoil-based(alkyd)oralco-holprimer.Bestchoices—latexsemi-gloss (walls), latexsemi-glossorgloss(trim).

The high heat and humidity of abathroom creates the perfectenvironment for mould and mildew.

You’ll want a painted surface that re-sists water and won’t let those nastyspores get a foothold.

Instead of choosing ceiling paint, use a semi-gloss latex for bathroomceilings. Best choices — latex semi-gloss (walls and ceiling), latex semi-glossorgloss (trim).Forachild’sbed-room, most parents want something

durable and easy to clean.More peo-plearechoosingloworno-VOCpaintsin order to reduce chemical off-gas-sing.This isanespeciallygoodchoicefor children’s rooms because of thehealth concerns associated withVOCs. Best choices — latex satin(walls), latex semi-gloss (trim). —www.motherearthnews.com

18How to make the best roast potatoes

IWAS taught how to roast potatoes perfectly whenI worked in a pub kitchen in London many moonsago. We used to make crispy golden roast potatoes to

serve with drinks at the bar. The head cook, who Iworked under, knew what she was talking about, andI have been making potatoes like this ever since.

Types of potatoOn the potato front, we in South Africa don’t get

many varieties like one can in the United States ofthe United Kingdom.

I like to use the Woolworths Mediterranean potatoes because they have a fabulous taste, butuse the best that you can find that are suitable forroasting. Woolworths now also stocks duck fat, so itis easy to come by. To keep these vegetarian use Sunflower or Canola oil.

So armed with all this knowledge over the years, this is my version of the very best roast potatoes.RecipeIngredients – adjust according to how many you need, and my suggestion is to make way more than you

think.1kg potatoes (the best you can find that are suitablefor roasting)Two tablespoons table saltJuice of half a lemon (optional)80100ml duck fat (about 3 dessert spoons)A few sprigs of rosemarySea salt flakes (I love Maldon)Heat your oven to a temperature of 200°C.Peel potatoes and cut into chunks. If they are large cut them into three with as many angles as you can. It is the number of angles that createthe crispness. If they are smaller, cut them in halfslightly diagonally.Put the spuds in a pot with and barely cover with water. Add salt and lemon juice. Bring to the boil.Once it has reached a rapid boil, turn the temperaturedown to a simmer and cook your potatoes for fiveminutes.Drain in a colander and then return to the pot thatthey were cooked in and with the lid on, holding ovengloves or a tea towel shake the potatoes about so asto rufflefluff the edges. I used a fork to further rough

them up.Stir through the duck fat which will immediatelymelt over the potatoes, tip into a large baking tray, making sure you don’t crowd the tray — there needsto be some space between them. If you add toomany the steam will interfere with the browningof them. Scatter over a few sprigs of rosemaryleaves, salt and pepper.Roast for 1 1/4 hours or until they are at the desiredcrispy golden colour. I shook the pan around a fewtimes and turned the spuds twice during the cooking time.

Scatter over more sea salt flakes and a fewsprigs of rosemary as garnish and serve with yourfavourite roast.

Dear Doctor Nash,My husband is impulsive. He just does not

foreseetheconsequencesofhisactions.Heactslike a three-year-old child. For him everythingis a joke, and then he acts in a silly way.

He often tells me that he does not trust me.He says that this is because he has been letdown bywomen so often in the past. But whathas that got to do with me?He then says he loves me. Where does that

leave me?Can I expect to live a happy life with a man

who judges me on the record of his past girl-friends. When I started this relationship I hadmany friends, males and females.

They were understanding and supportive, but my husband’s jealousy and temper hasdrivenmostof themaway.HowdoIhandle thisDoctor Nash? I am scared of him. — Ms P.M

Dear Ms P.M.Iampuzzledtoknowwhyonearthyoumar-

ried this man in the first place. What was it that you loved about him, and

how did he treat you in the beginning of yourrelationship?

From your letter there is nothing for you tobuild on.

Before you take any drastic action I suggestthat you decide on your boundaries, the wayyou expect to be treated, and decide what sortof marriage will make you and your partnerhappy.

Set those boundaries and tell him. If heagrees and co-operates thenhopefully youwillboth be happy.

Duma is a senior sensei at Gamalakhe and athird Dan black belt (sandan). He has been doingkarate since 1989 and on top of teaching his self-defence, karate has taught him self-discipline andhow to think independently.

CONGRATULATIONS to Man City for winning the English Premiership, with Liverpool and Chelsea in secondand third positions.

They will play in the European Championship nextseason, whilst Arsenal, Everton and Spurs will contestin the Europa League.

Next year the exNetherlands coach, Louis vanGaal, will take over at Man United, but I think he hasa tough uphill battle. I will be surprised if they win thePremiershipin the next10years,asManCity,Liverpool,Chelsea and Arsenal will dominate.

Norwich, Fulham and Cardiff were all relegated, whilst Leicester and Burnley will automatically be promoted. The last place is to be contested between Derby County and QPR. The World Cup starts on 12 Junewith hosts Brazil taking on Croatia.

On the local scene, Sundowns deservedly won theSAPSL, followed by Chiefs and Wits.

In Super 15 Rugby, Sharks are still on top as theypicked up a bonus point despite losing to theBrumbies.

Chiefs have moved up to second and Brumbies arein third position. Crusaders are picking up steam andlook the likely winners of the competition.

On Friday at 9:35am, Hurricanes entertain Highlanders.At9:35amonSaturday,theinformCrusaderswill show the Sharks up and win by 10 or more points.

At 11.40am, the Australian sides Reds and Rebelswill lay in a dead rubber, as neither side will make itto the playoffs. Reds will possibly win at home.Stormers will have a battle on their hands againstWestern Force and may well lose by two or threepoints.

Cheetahs will lose at home to Brumbies by sixpoints, and on Sunday morning Waratahs will beatLions by five points.

South African bred Variety Club won the Grade 1Champions Mile at ShaTin racecourse in Hong Kongby four lengths, making history as no overseas horsehas ever beaten a local Hong Kong trained horse inthis race before.

He is now trained by Mike de Kock, who has takenover from Joey Ramsden. Anton Marcus rode a brilliantrace from a wide draw, and in the process earned owner Markus Jooste the lion's share of the R16 millionprize money. What a boost for South African racing.

He will probably compete in France next and thengo on to the U.S. to contest the Breeders Cup. We wishall the connections well in their endeavours.

Happy punting.

WarriorshammerRichards BayVUSI [email protected]

THESouthCoastWarriors’ first teamcameout victors in their game against theRichards Bay Rhinos in a homematch at

Douglas Mitchell sports grounds last weekend.

The Richards Bay side is considered one of thestrongest sides in the leagueandwere the2013runner-ups, which might explain the 9-5 finalscore.

Warriors coach Christo Henderson said hethinks the cool weather on Saturday, coupledwith increasing support and attendance at

Warrior games by locals helped the home sidemaintain a clean record of being undefeated athome. With only 20 minutes remaining on theclock, Warriors were trailing 5-3 and thingswere not looking good for the hosts until theyscored two penalties, which earned themvictory. One area Henderson feels his teamneeds to concentrate more on is their kicking.

“We did not have a good kicking day onSaturday.Wewill beworking hard this week toget our rhythm back and ensure we get back

above 80% accuracy by the weekend,” he said. The Warriors second team played against theRhinos’ second team and won 50-29.

The B team’s trieswere scored by Piet Hlat-shwayo (3), Boxer Slabbert (2), Sifiso Damane(2), Alberto van Eck, Jackson Mqadi, JadeNyman, Piet Hlatshwayo, converted byAlbertovan Eck (2).
