Cabello HairdressersCabello Hairdressers are celebrating their third year in business this summer. The two storey salon has gone from strength to strength after opening in July 2006. Cabello started off initially with 6 members of staff and the enthusiastic team has now grown into 15 members.

Owner Julie credits this significant increase to the dedication of her staff, the range of services on offer and fantastic value for money. There is 10% off all treatments every Monday and Tuesday.

As well as offering all the traditional salon treatments which include; hairdressing, massage, waxing, tanning, manicures and pedicures Cabello also offers some top of the range holistic therapies. The two most

popular holistic treatments are reflexology and Hopi Ear Candles. Reflexology is a deeply relaxing treatment which stimulates or suppresses the nerves in the reflexes of the feet to encourage the elimination of toxins from the body. Hopi Ear Candles are one of the more unusual holistic treatments where a wax canvas tube is gently placed in the ear and lit at the top. The warmth creates a chimney effect which rebalances the sinuses. Both treatments are an effective way to eliminate stress and the associated symptoms.

To receive an exclusive 10% discount from any treatment just bring this copy of Feel Alive with you to the salon. (Offer not valid in conjunction with any other discounts)

Special place to Select your clothesA unique shop has just opened in Coventry Market, and will at last provide an outlet for Specials and 2-Tone fans to buy their stylish clothes. The shop was officially opened by Selecter and former Special drummer Aitch Bembridge.

This Aladdin’s cave of rude boy gear is all down to Steve and Linzi Eaton. Steve is a 2-Tone

icon himself having appeared on the cover of the first Selecter album “Too Much Pressure”. With a life devoted to music, he was the original Specials DJ, and has been involved with a number of local and headline bands.

In addition to Steve’s collection of Punk, designer, Rock and Roll and well tailored suits, Linzi has been searching the country for the last few years buying unique and eye-catching memorabilia which makes for a very eclectic mix.

Eat Your Art Out BBC Coventry & Warwickshire are working with groups across Coventry on an exciting new project called Eat Your Art Out.

This project follows BBC Coventry & Warwickshire’s previous highly successful award winning community projects Coventry Market the Musical!, Singing City Choir and Big Bard.

If Coventry was a recipe what ingredients would be used to make it? What makes it special and couldn’t be left out? The Cathedral, ribbon, Lady Godiva, cars, elephants, bikes, Phoenix, Frank Whittle, the ring road, The Specials?

There are so many things that Coventry is famous for and BBC Coventry & Warwickshire are celebrating Coventry in a unique way. They are working with Coventry people to create a special representation of the City... using food.

They will be creating a large outdoor sculpture representing Coventry’s culture, history, past and present, the difference is that the sculpture will be made from food. Made in six pieces, the food will reflect the community groups making each section. Artist Prudence Staite will be working with the participants to sculpt their Coventry.

The final event will be held in Coventry city centre on Saturday 5 September. Not only will the finished work of art be there to look at but BBC Coventry & Warwickshire will be inviting the city down to eat it!

Salim Bhayat, Astwood Design

Made in Coventry, Educated in the heart of the CityCity College Coventry is launching their ‘Made in Coventry’ campaign this summer. It focuses on the success stories of existing and ex students and staff, where the college has made a difference to their lives and has in some way helped them to achieve their goals. And it has all happened in the heart of our city!

Salim Bhayat is a former City College Coventry National Diploma Graphic Design student who is now a director of a successful design consultancy Astwood Design based in Bideford on Avon. His company is in fact responsible for the design of this campaign. Salim said:

“Over the years the College has given me and the city so much, so it’s an honour and a privilege to be involved in this campaign. The new College buildings and facilities are fantastic and the College’s central location couldn’t be better.”

Angela Lamb, started a teaching qualification for word processing eighteen years ago and over the years progressed onto further IT courses, Teaching and Management programmes, to now become one of Charterhouse Training’s Management Trainers working with high profile regional and national companies. Angela said:

“I had to balance studying, working full time and being a mum in order to achieve the goals I had set for myself. It wasn’t always easy but the college really enabled me to change my career path and succeed in a completely different field.”

The campaign celebrates the completion of the college’s move to its city centre location in Hillfields in its state of the art £50m buildings. The college can now boast fantastic, modern and technologically advanced facilities which are the envy of many an educational institution.

There is something for everyone at the college whether you have recently been made redundant and are looking to re-train, leaving school and looking for a vocational course that will take you on to university or an apprenticeship starting out in work for the first time.

BEST BAR NONE AWARDSAs part of Coventry’s drive to improve our evening economy and make Coventry safe and attractive to the public, the annual ‘Best Bar None’ awards scheme is being launched and all pubs, clubs and bars within the city are being invited to participate.

This year Coventry City Council is aiming to make the scheme bigger and better than ever. The award scheme has now launched and premises are invited to apply on an ongoing basis as opposed to having to apply within a given period.

‘Best Bar None’ is an accreditation scheme which recognises licensed premises who are doing all they can to make their venues as safe as possible. Publicity and promotion from the City Council and the Police, through the local media, will point members of the public towards premises holding the accreditation - venues, which provide high levels of safety and security in our vibrant city. All venues achieving the Best Bar None standard will be invited to a presentation ceremony where they will receive an award plaque. The plaques are designed to be fixed to the outside of the premises, giving a prominent visual sign, which will be easily recognised by potential customers. Additional awards for the Best Pub, Best Club, Best Bar and Best Community Pub will be presented to those reaching the highest standard in the four categories..The four best performing venues will also receive tickets to the glittering Godiva Awards, run by CVONE in the Autumn, when the city’s best overall venue will be announced and receive a Godiva Award bronze statue.

If licensed premises need help and advice about how to achieve high levels of venue safety and best practice, they can contact The Licensing Team, Coventry City Council on 024 7683 1888 or by email at [email protected]

What we think looks good on us often doesn’t do us the justice we deserve! Well don’t despair the Feel Alive fashion team are on hand to wave that magic wand and give two of the city’s most prolific offenders a much needed make under/make over, courtesy of Enigma Hair and Beauty, Garb, Hannigans, Monsoon, Muse, Raid Shoes and Wish.

LOZZAge: 22Occupation: ElectricianStyle: Dark and scruffy, more no maintenance than low maintenance.Sentence: Make Over.Lozz seems to have lost his spark with the ladies and after confessing to not having had a haircut or a serious girlfriend in the past three years we knew there must be a direct correlation. Armed with a bottle of nail varnish remover, we set about injecting some colour into this boy’s life - starting with a spray tan.

Let’s face it; we’ve all been stuck in a ‘look’ rut at some point or another. Too much make up, short skirts; lots of flesh on display to the other extreme of can’t be bothered, just got out of bed look!

LozzThe weirdest bit was having a spray tan I thought it was a bit girly for me, but the results speak for themselves. The whole outfit is wicked; I never thought I’d look this good in a cardigan! My favourite part was definitely the haircut, now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to buy some hair straighteners!

GracyThis was an amazing transformation, I loved the whole experience and the outfit is absolutely beautiful. My favourite bits were having my make up done professionally and the individual false eyelashes, they’re awesome! I’m so excited for the ball now, whereas before I was so worried about what to wear. I’m not sure if I’m ready to hang the miniskirts up for good though....

Your UniversityRightÊ onÊ yourÊ doorstep

Coventry is home to one of the largest city centre based universities in the UK and is an evolving and innovative University with a growing reputation for excellence in education. Independent surveys show that Coventry University provides a caring and supportive environment, enriched by a unique blend of academic expertise and practical experience. With the recently compiled National Union of Students’ Student Experience Report stating that almost a third of students chose to study at their local university because it was close to home we caught up with Sharon Taylor from the University’s Recruitment and Admissions Office to find out a little more on the benefits of studying at Coventry.

What has been your favourite moment of being a student at Coventry and why? Living in Coventry for most of my life, I am already familiar with the city so I didn’t have the fear of adapting to a new city or finding my way around (although some of the building locations still confuse me!!). But I would have to say my favourite moment has been meeting some brilliant people on my course (including lecturers) and more importantly making some fantastic friends, because they have supported me throughout my course and it is important to have this kind of support when starting uni.

What course are you currently studying and what stage are you at? I am currently in my final (3rd) year of Social Welfare and Community Studies.

What do you enjoy most about your course? My course has had some incredibly interesting modules. With this kind of course, there are so many different areas to cover, some not as fun....but the majority have been useful and interesting.

How will studying your course help you in your chosen career?I think firstly I would love to do some volunteer work abroad. This course has enabled me to develop my people skills by completing 3 placements, so I can take what I have learnt from them, and carry on volunteering.

What was your biggest fear about University before you came here and how did you overcome this? My biggest fear was the transition from 6th form to Uni....even though they are both down the road from each other and I can go visit whenever I like. I had some strong bonds in 6th form and the most amazing friends; not being in the same routine was the scary thing. But once I settled into uni, made new friends and let the change sink in, it was fine.

Why did you choose Coventry University? I chose to stay because I like Cov; it’s a small city but has everything you need. I am close to my family, and still have friends here. Sometimes I had regrets about not moving away to uni, but moving into student accommodation helped with that and I’ve had the best of both worlds, living at home and away...but still in Cov.

Did you attend an Open Day? My secondary school is like 5 minutes away, so we used to visit very often to find out about uni. At the time, I did not have my mind set of uni full stop, but eventually I decided that the thought of a full-time job straight away was scarier than uni so uni it was!!!!

What has surprised you about student life? Living away from home is a great experience. You get to be independent, make your own decisions, manage your money and meet new people. But at times it can be lonely, not for me because my family is 20 minutes away, but for those who aren’t as fortunate as me. I am surprised that I have enjoyed living away from my family, because one day without them used to be too much, now I’m an independent woman and the experience has been beneficial for me.

What are the three things you like best about Coventry University? Great facilities; including the sports centre, library and near-by restaurants, supportive and helpful lecturers and my Student Ambassador job.

Ranjit Bhandal

“Coventry is the local University of choice for many students from across Coventry, Warwickshire and the West Midlands for a number of reasons. As well as having some world leading courses, the campus benefits from being in the middle of the city centre which is served by strong transport links, making it easily accessible by train, car and bus. And for local people who still want to live on campus Coventry also has a wide variety of high quality, conveniently located student accommodation, the majority of which is located on campus and close to the city centre with easy access for public transport, shops and great nightlife. Our aim is to keep on improving. We’re investing heavily in developing our student facilities with £160m earmarked for improvements over the next ten years. By seeking to enhance the strong vocational emphasis of our courses and bolstering our links with the very best industry organisations, we’re firmly focussed on preparing students for successful futures.

When potential students are faced with such impressive facilities and courses on their doorstep there is little or no need for them to venture across the country to experience university life to the full, but don’t just take our word for it. This is what two of our current students, who work as Student Ambassadors for their local University, have to say about Coventry”.

What course are you currently studying and what stage are you at?I am currently studying Social Welfare and Community Studies and I am in my Final year.

What do you enjoy most about your course? I enjoy the fact I have to find all my own placements, this allows you to network within the community and find jobs that I could potentially do in the future.

What was your biggest fear about University before you came here and how did you overcome this?My biggest fear was financial, I was worried about student debt and being unable to pay it back after I have finished University, and I got over this fear by understanding that you can pay back debt once you have a degree and earning over £15,000. The university can also provide jobs that are flexible and fit well with your course like the Student Ambassador scheme.

Why did you choose Coventry University?I chose Coventry University because I wanted to stay at home and found a course that was ideal for me.

Did you attend an Open Day?, I didn’t attend an open day but I have worked on many of them through the Student Ambassador scheme and the facilities really benefit the students.

What has surprised you about student life? What surprised me about student life is how busy it actually is, without a diary I would be lost and wouldn’t know where I was from day to day.

What are the three things you like best about Coventry University?Diversity, equality and opportunity.

What is your favourite place to socialise in Coventry and why.My favourite place to socialise is Escape, it’s right in the centre of Coventry and there are some great live bands that play there,

What questions are you asked the most as a Student Ambassador?Mostly about courses and what studying in Coventry is like. I often get asked questions about accommodation and the sports and societies available.

What plans do you have for the future? I have got a place to work in America as a camp counsellor at a summer camp. Once that is done I will find work in the voluntary sector or maybe even look into a masters degree.

What is your favourite place to socialise in Coventry and why? I prefer going for a meal, or a drink with my close friends so we can have a good gossip and a laugh. I love Nando’s, no matter what the occasion is (Birthdays, Xmas meal, lunch, celebrate handing in all assignments), it is a great restaurant, Varsity’s, Wetherspoons, Subway (located in the SU) and BB’s Coffee and Muffins. The cinema is close and I love watching movies, and of course strolling through the City Centre, shopping!!!

What questions are you asked the most as a Student Ambassador? People always ask me ‘why Cov Uni’, and I explain my reasons. Some are intrigued that I have been here my whole life, and they want to know why I stayed. But many are quite shocked when I explain that my first 2 years I lived at home, but for my 3rd year I moved into student accommodation. But I think my answers are useful because I have experienced both, and have loads to say about Cov in general. Who better to promote Cov than someone who’s been here 20 years?

OPEN DAYSThe University will be holding Open Days on Saturday, October 10th and October 24th between 9am and 4pm.

Despite being a relative newcomer, his conversational style and silly sense of humour have seen him win a host of awards and become a regular act and MC at clubs all over the country. Jimmy McGhieA hotly-tipped new face on the comedy scene, Jimmy performs at comedy clubs up and down the country, to great acclaim. Feel Alive Summer 2009 23

Now, more than seven decades later, the Coventry-based company is creating something far more visible and something with far longer use.

Belgrade Plaza – being developed jointly by Deeley Properties and Oakmoor Estates – is a £140 million cultural, leisure and entertainment quarter which will help to change the face of the city centre.

The first two phases of the impressive scheme are already open and are fully let and a new high-quality square outside the Belgrade theatre was recently unveiled to great acclaim.

Its car park, the first phase to open, has already won awards while Premier Inn – one of two hotels destined for the Plaza along with a four star Radisson Edwardian – has reported very healthy business since opening in May.

Pizza Express, Bella Italia, Metro Bar & Grill and Gala Casino have all taken units in the latest phase and should be opening before the turn of the year, while the residential element is totally sold out.

Already the development is seen as a flagship for the new Coventry city centre which is currently undergoing billions of pounds worth of regeneration and it is something of which Deeley is rightly proud.

“I believe Belgrade Plaza will not only totally transform this quarter of the city centre bringing much-needed vitality to the area adjacent to what is now a rejuvenated theatre producing outstanding work, but it also underlines just what is possible in this city.

“This area was more or less a wasteland before the council took the decision to seek development partners. It was isolated from the rest of the city centre and saw precious little activity.

“It was often the area visitors saw when they ventured off the ring road, and it was not a good advertisement for what the city had to offer.

“Now it is well on its way to being transformed. Everyone recognises that the leisure and evening economy has not been as strong as it could have been and it is vital that it is developed. Belgrade Plaza will go a long way to helping that happen.

“The development will allow people to safely park their cars in a pleasant environment and walk a very short distance to their leisure destination or to do their shopping. We want them to have a rewarding and memorable experience in the city.

“We have been really pleased by the reaction we have had from various national operators. They see the way the city centre is developing and they realise the potential that there is here.

“I think we have proved to those operators what Coventry has to offer – but it is clear the city has to be more confident about itself and shout a little louder about that potential.

“We believe we have attracted the perfect mix of restaurants and bars to attract a wide age range of customers. We have worked very closely with the Belgrade to ensure that the theatre and the plaza complement each other.

“The theatre’s recent redevelopment and refurbishment has restored its national reputation and it deserves a fitting environment.”

Oakmoor Deeley have been working tirelessly to bring a four star Radisson Edwardian hotel to the city. The company are committed to opening at Belgrade Plaza, but the economic downturn has meant the deal will take longer to complete.

A phase of high quality student accommodation has also won planning consent on the site, something which Deeley feels is vital.

“All vibrant cities have vitality and buzz about and that is often achieved because of the mix of people. Personally, I think younger people have a vital role to play in the health of any city and I think their presence should be really encouraged.

“We have two universities which attract students from across the UK and much further afield.

“We have to make the city appealing to them and ultimately we want them to stay in the region when they graduate. You do not achieve that by putting them together in poor accommodation.” “Radisson have been involved with Belgrade Plaza for a long time and are committed to the city, but conditions for all of us have to be right for work to start.

“Premier Inn has made a very encouraging start to its trading and recognises there is still a pressing need for a high-end hotel offer with conferencing, and Radisson Edwardian will be very good for the city.”

Fear not, here at Feel Alive Magazine, we’ll have you strutting up and down the beaches like Adonis and Aphrodite in no time with the second instalment of our brand new feature, ‘SORTED’!

FLEX IT!Try going for an early morning or evening run, when the sun isn’t too hot, and take along with you a bottle of water to keep your bodily fluids in check. Try just 5-10 minutes at first, around the block, even round your back garden, and then gently increase by 5 minutes to build up a routine.

You could even just go for a walk or go cycling to improve your basic fitness levels.

You should gain a better understanding of how fit you are based on how much your body aches after a workout session, how heavy is your breathing, how much sweat is generated, how much acid has been developed in your stomach and how hot is your skin? You can even regularly check your pulse, count beats per minute. Once you feel comfortable with the way your body reacts to exercise, why not look up one of the many classes in Coventry, at sports centres and gym classes conveniently located just a walking distance from the city centre.

EAT IT!Remember that it’s important to maintain a balanced diet, taking in all of the natural proteins, oils, minerals and vitamins that will help you build bone and muscular strength.

Fish, red meats, chicken, eggs and milk will build your protein and iron levels, whilst you balance it out with a steady and controlled portion of fatty produce and carbohydrates from food such as crisps, pizza, potatoes, chocolate, bread, rice and pasta.

As long as you don’t feast on one particular type of food for a prolonged period of time, your body will burn off calories quicker and more effectively with a balanced and nutritious diet, rather than intoxicating on one medical routine.

Coupled with a controlled diet, regular exercise and a focused and determined attitude, you really will start to feel a difference even after a week. Remember, the key to a healthy lifestyle is in structure, patience and dedication.

WEAR IT! Firstly, why not look into purchasing some affordable gym attire and equipment, such as comfy tracksuit or shorts, sweatbands and light running trainers. Jeans and shoes are not the easiest thing to exercise in! You can then try various light exercises such as sit-ups, press-ups and upper torso twists and knee hikes to really find out what balance and longevity you can muster, and monitor how it affects your key muscles and tendons. Sony Ericsson C905 Cybershot

The C905 is the latest slide design phone from Sony Ericsson, available in a choice of colours such as Night Black, Ice Silver and Copper Gold; it redefines cool with its sexy, sleek and curvaceous exterior. Not only is it the first CyberShot phone with an 8 megapixel camera, it also brings back xenon flash technology, a huge improvement from basic LED flashes, and can be found on most new digital cameras. This means that your photographs will look pixel sharp and super smooth, with red-eye reduction technology, face detection and autofocus, image stabilisers and Smart Contrast, a fantastic new feature that balances light and colour to give you the ultimate in picture quality. It even has a feature called BestPic, which will automatically take a series of 7 pictures so you can choose your favourite!

Along with being one of the best camera phones on the market, the C905 also packs in a whole load of goodies including assisted GPS tracking and satellite navigation, Google Maps, a fully functional media player with a plethora of extras for your MP3’s and AAC song formats and the option to build on the relatively small internal memory of 160MB by adding an 8GB Micro Stick. This could hold over 2000 MP3 tracks for the music lover on the go.

The C905 also has built-in WiFi support, with standard Bluetooth and USB connectivity options so you can effortlessly transfer images, songs and data.

If there is one downside to this phone, it’s that the keypad can be a little tricky to use for texting, and the battery life could last longer, but with all of the added features and a superb camera that rivals many market digital cameras this is a trivial downturn to an otherwise excellent generation of high quality Sony models. FEATURES | CITY OF INVENTION

We continue our feature (Coventry, city of Invention) which focuses on Coventry’s illustrious reputation as a city of invention and innovation. Covering a whole spectrum of advancement from social, civic, educational and industrial with their origins and development all firmly rooted in the city of Coventry.

In this edition, Mick Mclaughlin talks to Tony McNally, Managing Director of Climate Change Solutions Ltd, an innovative company tackling global climate change solutions.

Company: Climate Change Solutions Ltdwww.climate-change-solutions.co.ukManaging Director – Tony McNally

Tell us about your business?

Climate Change Solutions was established in 2003 with the objective to engage the public and private sector in addressing climate change. Our aim is to develop and promote sustainable local and global climate change solutions, generating and supporting initiatives for achieving a low carbon economy and clean technology future. This requires a broad based public, private and community partnership with a view to maximising engagement and participation of the mainstream. We help this through organising conferences, seminars, workshops and exhibitions that address these issues and bring stakeholders together to adopt these policies into their businesses or public sector projects.

What inspired you to develop it?

Climate change caused mainly by humans society burning coal, gas and oil represents the greatest challenges of the 21st Century, necessitating the engagement of all sections of society, local and global to both reduce this and find alternatives from renewable sources.

How long did this take from initial idea to getting it up and running?

About a year or so.

What skills, experience and qualities do you have that can make this business a success?

You definitely need commitment to the agenda of climate change and the capacity to engage in partnership with scientists ,engineers, investors as well as the other major stakeholders, companies, local authorities, government and EU agencies to seek to address the issue.

How will this make a contribution to the business world?

Every business must address the challenge of the low carbon revolution starting with energy and resource efficiencies ie with water, waste and transport that can save money making them more innovative and competitive as well as low carbon. The successful businesses of the 21st century will need these features or die. This will be more so as the USA and China increasingly take the lead from Europe that has been up to now in this position.

How do you market it?

Through sector trade press and in particular energy and buildings magazines which are read by people in the business. For example, the building and construction industry now have to consider the government and EU low carbon threshold on buildings so it makes sense for us to promote what we do to this sector.

CITY OF INVENTION | FEATURES

What or whom inspires you?

President Barack Obama. He has had a tough call since his election as there was previously the opposite commitment to the climate change agenda. However, he has promised that the US will lead the world on climate change and make cleaner energy a priority including $650billion in the emergency budget. He is the first American president to put cleaner energy at the heart of his domestic agenda and to envision environmentalism as a creator of jobs on a large scale and as a boom to the nation’s future.

If you had one piece of advice to anyone thinking of starting up their own business what would it be? You’ve definitely got to know your market. 50% of new businesses don’t last beyond the first year so it’s imperative that you know your market and where you’re going with it.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve been given?

Don’t spend what you haven’t got! I think in the current climate we can see that this is even more imperative as it goes against the culture of the last twenty years whereby corporate banks have now finished up where assets are liabilities. You should only borrow the money against the assets that you have.

How has the city of Coventry helped you with your quest in making this business happen?

I’ve lived in Coventry for 36 years so I definitely have a strong commitment to the city.

The experience within the city on climate change on balance has been helpful but also frustrating as the urgency and scale of the challenge necessitates a radical transformation. We have been impressed by the facilities of Coventry TechnologyPark where we are based so much that I believe we are its longest serving tenants!

Tell us your story of how you contribute to Coventry’s reputation as a city of Invention and Innovation

OUT & ABOUT | WALK OF FAME

J Coventry City 1987 FA Cup Winners

On May 16, 1987, the Coventry City team, under their charismatic managers John Sillett and George Curtis, made history by winning one of the most exciting FA Cup finals of the modern era, beating much-fancied Tottenham Hotspur 3-2. The game produced one of the great goals in FA Cup history, a diving header from striker Keith Houchen, and more than 200,000 people turned out to welcome the team home to Coventry. It remains the single most important sporting achievement in the city’s history.

J Marlon Devonish – Athlete and Olympic Gold Medalist One of the great British sprinters of the past ten years, he was born in Coventry in 1976 and as a boy joined the city’s athletics club, Godiva Harriers. He won English Schools and European Junior titles at both the 100 and 200 metres and competed successfully at both distances on the national, European and Commonwealth Games stage. But it’s as a member of the Great Britain 4 X 100 metres team that his greatest success was to come, culminating in an extraordinary race in the 2004 Athens Olympics, when Devonish, along with Jason Gardener, Darren Campbell and Mark Lewis-Francis beat the hot favourites, USA, by just one hundredth of a second.

J Sir Nigel Hawthorne – Actor The son of a doctor, he was born in Coventry in 1929 and moved to Cape Town, South Africa at the age of four. Returning to Britain in 1951, he embarked on a stage career, plying his trade as a jobbing actor. Life changed for him in 1980 with his superb characterisation of the manipulative Sir Humphrey Appleby in TV’s hugely popular ‘Yes Minister’. He won four BAFTA awards for the role and went on to secure an

Oscar nomination for his stunning portrayal of George III in ‘The Madness of King George’. He died, aged 72, in 2001.

J Sir Alfred Herbert – Industrialist

Born in Leicestershire in 1866, Alfred Herbert came to Coventry in the late 1880s as the cycle manufacturing boom reached its peak. His Alfred Herbert Machine Tool Company, founded during that time by the young entrepreneur, went on to become the biggest machine tool firm in the world. The company seemed to lose impetus when Sir Alfred died in 1957 and it was finally wound up in 1983. But the founder’s legacy lives on in the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, for which he gave the founding donation, and in Lady Herbert’s Garden, a former slum area laid out by the industrialist in memory of his first wife, who died in 1930.

J Vince Hill – Singer A pub and club singer from his teenage years, it was Coventry-born Vince Hill’s velvety voice and warm and laid-back stage persona that established him as a household name in the 1960s. His professional career began in the late 1950s with the vocal group The Raindrops, although it was as a solo artist nearly ten years later that the breakthrough came as he recorded a string of hits, notably the Sound of Music song ‘Edelweiss’ and ballads like ‘Roses of Picardy’ and ‘Love Letters in the Sand’.

J Philip Larkin – Poet Born in Coventry in 1922, the son of the City Treasurer, he was a pupil at King Henry VIII School, before going up to Oxford in 1940. He published his first volume of poetry, The North Ship, in 1945, but made his career as a librarian, spending the last 30

years of his life at the University of Hull. His reputation as one of the greatest English poets of the 20th century rests on just four slim volumes of poetry and he was also a well-regarded novelist and jazz critic. Awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in1965, he later turned down the post of Poet Laureate. He died in 1985.

J Hazel O’Connor – Singer and Actress

Born into an Irish family in Coventry in May 1955, she left Foxford Grange School in 1971 and embarked on a tour of the world, taking in a variety of jobs along the way. She signed a record contract in 1978 and landed a part in the film Breaking Glass the following year, a role that won her a Variety Club of Great Britain Award for Best Film Actor. A music career followed and her songs ‘Eighth Day’, ‘D-Days’ and ‘Will You’ helped to cement Coventry’s musical reputation in the 1980s. She continued to record and develop her acting career on film and TV and still tours widely with a repertoire of her best songs.

J Clive Owen – Actor Coventry-born Clive Owen got his first taste for the stage at the Belgrade Youth Theatre, graduated from RADA in 1987 and cut his teeth on Shakespeare at the Young Vic. It was his starring role in television’s ‘Chancer’ that first brought him to mass attention and he gained international recognition through a string of successful films, from ‘Croupier’, ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘Gosford Park’, to ‘Children of Men’ and more recently ‘The International’. Over the years he’s been linked with the role of James Bond and has become arguably the most high profile British star in Hollywood. He lives in London.

J The Selecter – 2-Tone Band Formed by Neol Davis is 1979, the band were the originators of 2-Tone records, along with their label partners The Specials. The line-up was Neol Davis, Pauline Black, Charlie Anderson, Charley ‘Aitch’ Bembridge, Desmond Brown, Compton Amanor and Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson and their insightful lyrics and infectious ska sound saw them chart many times with the singles On My Radio, Three Minute Hero and Missing Words. They had actually left 2-Tone Records by 1980, when they released their classic album Celebrate the Bullet.

J Billie Whitelaw – ActressOne of Britain’s most respected actresses, she was born in Coventry in 1932 and made her name in a series of collaborations with the Irish playwright Samuel Becket, who described her as a ‘perfect actress’. She made her television debut in ‘Dixon of Dock Green’ in 1955 and had made her first venture into cinema the year before, going on to win BAFTAs for her work in ‘Charlie Bubbles’ and ‘Twisted Nerve’. More recent films included ‘The Omen’ and ‘The Krays’ and she came out of retirement to turn in a cameo performance in the recent British hit ‘Hot Fuzz’.

So Gary, first of all, congratulations on your recent singles, Wonderful and Open Arms. You’ve had some great reviews from critics, you must be really pleased? Oh yeah, I’m over the moon, it’s really nice to get good reviews, especially when it’s something that you’ve put your heart into.

Don’t you have a new album out soon? Yep, I’m trying not to count the days! It’s out on May 25th.

What can we expect from the Album? Just some more heartfelt, organic, honest songs.

When did you get your ‘big break’ so to speak? Probably when my debut E.P was picked up by a music producer in New Jersey.

After being personally handpicked by the boys who fell in love with his “Amazing voice and inspirational songs” this up and coming singer songwriter certainly has the world at his feet.

Where do you draw your inspiration from when you’re writing songs? Life really, I tend to draw from my own experiences, I’ve travelled around and lived alone and things like that when you’re out of your comfort zone, it helps when you’re trying to come up with new material.

Have you always wanted to be a singer songwriter?Definitely, it was a toss up between this or being an astronaut, on my video for Open Arms I was actually in a space suit so I can tick them both off my list now! Have you ever been to Coventry before?Yeah I have actually when I was younger, I went to meet an old school friend there and I’m really looking forward to coming back and playing at the Ricoh with Take That.

So you’re looking forward to supporting Take That, how do they compare to the other acts you’ve supported (The Script, The Feeling, and Amy Macdonald)? All the Acts I’ve supported have been great, obviously Take That draw a huge crowd so this will be on a much bigger scale to what I’ve done previously.

Are you getting nervous?Yep, the nerves are starting to get me, not long now!

You’ve collaborated with an eclectic mix of artists on other projects including Joseph Arthur, Juliette Lewis, Carina Round, and James Morrison – who else would you like to work with?David Bowie, he’s like my all time hero although I haven’t heard much from him recently... Peter Gabriel would be cool and Lady GaGa, I’ve just done a cover of her single ‘Just Dance’ which is available to download on iTunes now!

Can we expect a Gary Go tour anytime soon?I really hope so, guess it just depends on how the Take That tour goes this summer but if I do it would be hard living up to those boys performances what with all the fireworks and such! What are you plans for the future? To carry on doing what I’m doing, supporting Take That this summer and making music. I really hope my album gets a good reception and that people enjoy listening to it, essentially I want people to get out of it what I put in.

Who was your first celebrity crush?Haha, good question! Do I have to answer honestly?! It was Natalie Imbruglia from neighbours. Ok If you were stuck on a desert Island what three things (apart from Natalie Imbruglia) would you take with you?Definitely my iPhone, erm... Kylie Minogue so her and Natalie could have a cat fight and a raft, can I have a raft?

Yes we’ll let you have a raft...

Cool then I can sail away with one of the girls!

Tell us a fascinating fact about yourself? When I was in New Jersey I lived in the house that Frank Sinatra grew up in.

Can you tell us a secret about Take That?Haha not yet, ask me after the tour!

The Godiva festival hosts the Godiva Unsigned competition for local acts to play the main stage do you have any advice or tips for aspiring artists?Whatever you do, do it because you enjoy it, do it for yourself and no one else.

And finally Mr Go, where did you get the name Gary Go from?Well first of all it came about from a family friend who called me it at a party and it kinda stuck from then on, although it takes on new meanings and new lives as life goes on.

Gardening is no longer the hobby of choice for those who have retired, many more people of all ages are getting involved with all things horticultural. Families are reaping the benefits from growing their own fruit and veg, not only is it a fun and sometimes messy pastime to enjoy with the kids, it also teaches them valuable lessons on healthy eating and can keep the costs of the weekly shop down too. Young homeowners are also becoming increasingly aware of the value that can be added to their properties by investing in their gardens. With this in mind, here are some handy tips to help you budding gardeners harness your own piece of garden tranquillity this summer...

Word has it, the film was originally considered too scary for kids, hence its delayed release allowing Jonze to redesign some of his films beasties and creatures. Defending The Caveman with Mark LittleWest End smash hit, Defending The Caveman, is the longest running solo play in Broadway history. Probably because it asks the age-old question: Why do men and women misunderstand each other? This hilariously funny and cringingly truthful show suggests the answers lie with our cave dwelling ancestors.

Nando’sI’ve said it before but I really enjoy going out for dinner – a) because I don’t have to cook and b) because there’s so many places to choose from in Coventry. I swung by Nando’s recently to have some of the legendary Portugese Peri Peri chicken! They cook the meat to order and the range of flavours is truly mouth watering. Some of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life have been in Nando’s!

The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun by J.R.R TolkienWhere did Tolkien find the time to write all these epics? That’s what I want to know. This previously unpublished material centres around Norse hero, Sigurd, the dragon-slayer, the revenge of his wife, Gudrun, and the Fall of the Nibelungs. I’ve bought my copy and expect to finish it round about Christmas!

WIN THE LATEST VIVIENNE WESTWOOD SHOES WITH WISH…and a night on the town at Bar Number THREE to show them offThe most beautiful, striking and sexy shoes in the world have arrived at WISH – and we have one pair to give away in gorgeous fire engine red.

And if that is not enough, we’re throwing in a VIP night on the town for two at Bar No. Three – Coventry’s new celebrity hotspot in Priory Place to celebrate.

For more than three decades Vivienne Westwood has forged her way into the hearts, minds and purses of fashionistas across the globe.

Now she has found a place in Wish’s new collection of the ‘ultragirl’ slipper.

Westwood’s trademark practicality is a faultless match for melissa’s injected thermoplastic. “This technique guarantees perfect shapes without interweaves as we see in fabrics ...” says Westwood.

The design is unquestionably British, undeniably feminine and fearlessly non-conformist.
